Nikon D800 & Sony A7r processing

I have aperture 3.5 and am using a 15" macbook pro from early 2011: 2.2 GHZ Intel core7, 8GB 1333DDR3 Ram, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512MB Graphics and the internal hard drive. I'm about the purchase either the 24MB Sony A7 or the 36MB A7r. I'm concerned that the 36MP Raw files will grind my computer to a halt in aperture. Since the Nikon d800 is also 36mp, I was wondering if anyone has insight into whether a camera like the d800 or sony a7r with 36MP will be too much processing mor my humble macbook pro to handle. Should I get the A7 or A7r?
thanks!

I'm using a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with 8 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Core i5 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB with my D800E.
In general it's working very okay for me. But I'm not a full time pro. If I had to edit images all day long, I'd probably already have replaced it with a newer model or a more powerful desktop Mac.
But I'd consider a SSD drive a must. I have replaced my optical drive with a 256 GB SSD.

Hello- I am a Canon photographer.  I use Bridge (CS5) to process my raw files to jpegs.  I am taking on a second photographer who shoots Nikon (D800) and i am not currently able to see or process his images.  Can you please help?  thank you!

    According to Adobe:
    D800
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
    D800E
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
The fact that they have 2 versions of ACR means that initial support for the D800 was added in 6.7  but that complete support was finalized in 7.1 (the 4.1 in the chart is for Lightroom)
I'm not sure that this means there are missing features, but rather refinements and optimized settings were added in 7.1
    However, ACR 7.1 requires CS6.
As Dag mentioned, you can also use the latest version of DNG Converter to convert the D800 files to DNGs which will be able to be opened in older versions of ACR.
The DNG converter only works on folders of files, not individual files. So just select the folder and convert. All the files in the folder will be converted.

Would like to purchase PSE 12 to process Camera Raw files for the following cameras: Nikon D800, Nikon DF, Canon G9 and Pentax K-3 does the Raw Converter that comes with  PSE 12 when purchased recognize  the cameras listed in the question or do I need to download  the camera Raw Version 8.3 ?

While the G9 RAW files can be read by Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom, these file are unsupported at this time. Here is a link to Adobe's latest list of cameras that are supported and this list came out yesterday http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
I have not done a comparison between Lightroom and Canon's software but others have and say that Canon's software is clearly better. I am sure when Adobe updates their software again to include the G9 it will be a very good RAW converter as it is will most other cameras.

  • Which MacBook for processing Nikon D800 files

I'm considering a few MacBook options and would appreciate advice on performance:
    MBA 11" i7 8GB
    MBA 13" i7 8GB
    rMBP 13" i5 8GB
I'm shooting a Nikon D800 which generates RAW/NEF files around 37-42MB, and when created into a TIF can get up to 200MB.  I need a latop for travelling which means I can work on Lightroom and Photoshop. I definitely need 8GB of RAM, but I'm not sure about the processor.  I would prefer a higher resolution screen, but not at the expense of performance.
I've been told that the i5 on the MBA is lacking and that I would definitely need the i7.  The rMBP 13" has a faster i5, but I'm not sure whether it will handle the file size.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone using any of these sets ups with the D800.
    Thanks

I always advise going for the 2.0 machine...if it's not going to be too much of a financial hardship. Why? Well, so that if you need it, you've got it. You may think you'll only use it for word processing--but then maybe you'll get into photography or videos in the next year and be glad of the extra power. (That happens with Mac users by the way. The programs that come with the machine are so appealing that they start using them, and doing more on the computers than they'd ever done before.) Or maybe new programs will come out that you want, and you'll be grateful for the extra to help running them.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Macs tend to last. So where people might replace a laptop within a year or two, with a Mac they replace it in three-four years. Maybe even longer. So getting a more powerful machine is worth the money because it's likely that you'll be holding onto it longer and it'll need to keep up with your growing and changing needs.
That, at least, is my advice.

  • How do you process a RAW file ARW (from a Sony a7R camera) in Elements 11?

How do you process a RAW file (ARW) from Sony a7R camera in Elements 11? Elements 11 does not seem to accept a ARW file.

    Doug2014
For editing of the Sony a7R raw image in Photoshop Elements Camera Raw need the following ingredients
    a. The Camera Raw version must support the camera that you are using, that is, the Sony a7R. Support for that camera did not come until Camera Raw version 8.3.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    b. The version of Camera Raw must be supported by the version of Photoshop Elements. Camera Raw 8.3 is not supported until Photoshop Elements 12.
The choices would appear to be:
    a. Switch to Photoshop Elements 12
    or
    b. Use the DNG Converter to convert the Raw image to .dng
If all you have is Premiere Elements 11 which I do not think is the case, the Camera Raw plug-in allows you only to import the raw or dng image into the project for inclusion there - no Camera Raw dialog editing. But the same Camera Raw version - Camera Support - Premiere Elements version support still exists.
    Please review.
    Thanks.

  • Unable to open Raw files from Nikon D800 in Photoshop CC [was:raw updates with creative cloud?]

i have a d800, bridge or photoshop do not seem to support the raw files, i am using CC and bridge will not bring up the thumbnails and photoshop will not open the files at all, can anyone help?

[Moved from Cloud forum to Camera Raw forum]
    ACR = Adobe Camera Raw.
ACR is the plugin used by Photoshop to read and process Raw files from cameras. It must be updated every time a new camera comes on to the market.
The Nikon D800 has been fully supported since ACR7.1
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
ACR7.1 is compatible with Photoshop CS6 and later
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
So, if you are in fact using Photoshop CC, there should be no reason that Raw files cannot be opened.
    In Photoshop, click:
Windows: Help > About Plug-In > Camera Raw
Mac: Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw
    Which version number is shown?
Are you using Nikon transfer software to get the Raw files from your camera to your computer?

I select the images I want uploaded, NEF files, click the "IMPORT" button, process bar comes up and shows work in progress, but no progress. after about 2 minutes, dialogue box appears with message: "unable to import because the following files are unreadable: NEFxxxx, etc."

  • I cannot open Nikon D800 RAW image files in lightoom 2

I cannot open Nikon D800 RAW image files in lightoom 2.  My raw files will not import into lightroom (it imports jpegs, but not the RAW files) I am using Lightroom 2, version 2.7, camera Raw 5.7. Can you help?

I would highly recommend upgrading to Lightroom 4 as the processing engine is a quantum leap ahead from Lr 2 just as your camera is a leap ahead!!
p.s.  you can upgrade directly fro 2 to 4.

  • Will Photoshop Elements 11 and Lightroom 4 support conversation of RAW files from a Nikon D800?

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 9 and must convert RAW files from my Nikon D800 to .dng files before processing using a added converted.  I'm considering upgrading to either Elements 11 or Lightroom 4 but want to know if either of these programs will support the nikon D800 RAW files without having to go through this extra cumbersome step.   Additionally, if I do go with Lightroom 4, will the transition be easy or difficult and what problems might I encounter?

Yes the D800 is fully supported in both applications.
You would certainly benefit in processing your 36mp raw files using Lightroom if you have a 64bit PC or Mac with additional memory (RAM). The Lightroom develop module is where you do all the editing and you get the benefit of the full CS6 raw engine in an intuitive interface.
If you regularly use the Elements Organizer you should understand Lightroom quite easily.
Why not download the free trial of LR4 and test for 30 days.

  • My camera Nikon D800 don't work tethered with my new Mac Book Pro retina. I use Capture One Pro and it doesn't recognize the camera! HELP!!!!

I just bought a new retina display and It doesnt recognise my Nikon D800. I dont know what to do cause I shoot dayly tetherd!
I've changed cables,  upgaraded softwares and nothing!
    Help!!!!

It has been over a year since I last went through that process, but I thought it asked first whether you wanted to use an existing iCloud account or set up a new one.
Generally speaking, you cannot delete an iCloud account or any Apple ID, only disconnect from it and abandon using it.

  • Raw support for Sony A7r

Does photoshop elements 12 incorporate raw plugin 8.3 so that I can open raw files from my Sony A7r camera?

PSE12 ships with 8.1, and can be updated to ACR 8.3.
On Win7/8 this update is accomplished using Help / Updates in the Editor.
On XP and Vista, there is no updater but there is a manual process that can be followed.
I'm less sure about what happens on a Mac but I’d assume PSE12 on the latest OS will be ok receiving updates.

Yes, absolutely, no contest. The D800 already has an almost unprecedented dynamic range, and Process Version 2012 (ACR 7.1 and up), with its new highlight recovery algorithm, really makes it shine. Using PV 2010 (up to ACR 6.7) on that camera feels almost like a waste.
