Nikon D90 M-Jpeg

Help! A colleague has the Nikon D90, with HD-movie mode. Now, when I transport the files to my Mac and play them in Quicktime I get a very "blur/low compression" version. Quicktime says it uses the dmb1-codec (?). Acceding to the specs it should be Mjpeg. But I cannot play the file in that codec (I can't even find it in the codeclist/plugins of quicktime). And, Yes, I've turned on the "Show legacy Codec". But still no sharp HD movie visible.
Does somebody has a answer/idea?
Fred

All I could find about the camera says that the SD video files use Motion JPEG (in an AVI container) but the HD videos (24fps) are not supported on the Mac OS.

Why does photoshop 12 editor open my Nikon D90 Camera RAW files only as jpegs???

    Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
What makes you think that the raw files are being opened as JPGs?
Do you shoot RAW+JPG and opening the JPG files bt mistake?
If you are opening a RAW (NEF) file and it doesn't show the Camera Raw screen but goes straight into the editor then it may be that your screen resolution is too low.
    What is your screen resolution?

  • Raw Update 2.3 + Nikon D90 = Wrong White Balance Temperature

Hi folks. Wonder if someone has had a similar issue and/or has any insights.
    Here's the background:
    - Aperture 2.1.2 on OS 10.4.11
    - Downloaded/installed Raw Update 2.3
    - Imported ~800 NEFs from a D90
    - On ~15-20 NEFs, pictures show up blue (white balance at ~2500)
    - The affected NEFs are semi-randomly distributed among the ~800
    Here's why it's weird:
    - NEF displays correctly in Nikon View (the thumbnail and full picture)
    - NEF displays correctly in the Finder (the thumbnail)
    - NEF displays correctly in the preview and thumbnail *in Aperture* but only until the preview and thumbnail processing completes at which point they turn blue (this is why it's especially weird)
    - Peeking into the Aperture package, the NEF thumbnail shows up correctly but the preview and thumbnail files show up blue.
If I delete the NEFs from Aperture, close down, and repeat I get the exact same problem on the exact same NEFs. This leads me to believe that there's something specific to the NEFs but it must also be linked to Aperture and more specifically, it's thumbnail/preview process since they show up fine in Nikon View, the finder and Aperture before the thumbnail/preview processing takes place.
Obviously I can't downgrade to Raw Converter 2.1 or 2.2 since my files are from a D90, and I shoot in raw (not raw + jpeg) only so have been limping along with Nikon's software.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I simply can't see the NEFs.
    OS X 10.5.5
    Aperture 2.1.2
    Nikon D90
Import runs fine, and the thumbs are there, but when opening a NEF a big thumb (7x4.5cm on the 24" screen) is displayed in the middle for a second, and then it turns into a dark red message "Unsupported Image Format".
It's general - no NEFs work for me.
I import directly into Aperture - do you import via the Nikon Software?
Previously I had an Olympus E400 - the RAWs worked fine in Aperture (directly imported).
    My strange observations are:
With the Olympus E400 (10MB) the size of the JPG files were 6-7MB and the RAW files (called .ORF) were 21MB.
With the Nikon D90 (12.3MB) the size of the JPGs are around 6.5MB (4288x2848 pixels), but the size of the NEFs are just around 11MB (I did expect over 21MB) and the pixels are 256x170 (although the picture says 4288x2848 on the camera itself).
I'm new to this support site - do Apple supporters take time to read our questions and join these discussions?

  • Nikon D90 footage: Can you edit natively in Final Cut?

Just wondering if anyone has been using the new Nikon D90 to shoot video, and then importing the footage natively into FCP6. The camera's video-recording format, from what I have read, is 720p24, an .avi file, and a Motion JPEG codec.
I see that in the settings for a Final Cut sequence, you can choose 1280X720 frame size, a true 24 frames per second rate, and either a Motion JPEG A or Motion JPEG B compressor. It seems like with these settings, you could put your footage into the timeline and not have to render it before editing . . . unless the .avi file format goofs it up. Can you edit .avi in Final Cut natively, or do you have to use a Quicktime file?
    Any workflow advice much appreciated,
    Jim

No, sorry to say, I do not own the camera. And in looking around the web for an original, as-shot-by-the-D90 clip to experiment with, the only ones I found were at this site:
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08090101nikond90samplegallery.asp
They were billed as: D90 sample movie 1 • original .AVI format • 21 seconds, 35.7 MB
    and: D90 sample movie 3 • original .AVI format • 9 seconds, 24.5 MB
So I downloaded them, imported them into Final Cut, and they showed up with settings in the browser of: 1280X720 and 24 fps (so far so good) but then a compressor setting of "Apple OpenDML JPEG" rather than what I was expecting, Motion JPEG, which is what the D90 spec is. If the clip was truly "original .AVI format," I would have expected the compressor setting to be Motion JPEG.
Then, when I tried to change the sequence settings to Apple OpenDML JPEG, I found that there is no such setting. My thought was if the size, 1280X720, the frame rate, 24, and the compressor settings all matched, you could edit natively. And when I dragged the clip into the timeline, it did not give me a dialogue box asking if I would like the sequence settings to match the clip, the way it does with some footage.
Yes, you can render the clip and then edit it, but it would be great to avoid that step. Anyway, I got the red bar in the timeline with every combination of sequence compressor settings I tried, maybe 10 of them.
So maybe the answer is some time is needed for Final Cut to support the D90's Motion JPEG files natively, though I believe that is an older codec. Too bad the D90 does not record in something like DVCPRO HD. For a $1000 camera, the image quality looks pretty good, and the shallow depth of field really turned my head. I was thinking it might be a cheap Red Rock or Letus killer.
    Thanks for the input,
    Jim

  • Can't see NEF thumbnails in preview in import window - Nikon D90

    Hi,
I am trying to import photos from my Nikon D90 using File/Import photos from device. When I check the preview option, I see jpegs, but not the NEFs/RAWs.
Any ideas why this would be?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Importing directly from a camera has some extra quirks. What happens when you use a card reader?
Does your OS show previews in Finder/Explorer?

  • Imoprting RAW images from my Nikon D90 into iphotos

I'm sorry I know this must be pretty basic but I am having problems importing my RAW images into iphotos. I have a Nikon D90 and I shoot in both jpeg and RAW - when I import the images from the camera into iphoto it imports two images but they are both jpegs and of course when I upload the either of them into Photoshop - Photoshop does not open up with the RAW convertor because the image has come across as a jpeg.
    1) Have I lost my RAW images - if not how do I get them back, and
    2) What should I be doing in the future to avoid this?
Sorry to trouble you with such basic info - but you know what it is like - it can be so frustrating until you get it right,
    Thanks
    Ray

when I import the images from the camera into iphoto it imports two images but they are both jpegs
    They're not.
    Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately. (Which kind of makes shooting Raw and Jpeg perhaps a little pointless?)
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots. Add that to your jpeg from the Raw and Jpeg shooting and now you'll have three versions of the shot...

  • When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

This is typical of the default NEF RAW conversion of Aperture and the best thing you can do is set up a few presets to apply to all of your RAW images to get a tone curve and colors that is pleasing to you as a default. The in camera JPEGs / embedded JPEGs (that you first see during import) are treated to the Nikon "Picture Control" settings that are set on the camera - the RAW's as interpreted by Aperture are not.
I have written extensively and even have a few downloadable presets on my site - look for NEF...

  • Initial Nikon D90 observations

As stated in a previous post I recently purchased a Nikon D90 and have played with it this weekend. Tonight I loaded the photos into Aperture and made several observations:
    1. for some reason the photos did not appear on the import screen while they were still in the camera. However, the photos did import into Aperture
    2. The D90 photos appear to be very soft compared to the Canon G9 photos. This requires more sharping than the G9. I have not been able to find a way to sharpen the photos in D90
    3. The sharpening tool in RAW fine tuning doesn't do much. In fact turning all the way up and zooming in I can't tell any changes as I move the sliders back and forth. This requires the use of the Edge Sharpen tool. As stated above, the photos are soft and need some sharpening.
    4. The auto exposure is to aggressive making the photos over exposed. I need to turn the effect down after completing the auto exposure.
    5. All photos are saved as both RAW and JPG Fine. However, only the RAW files are imported into Aperture. As a result, I am not able to determine the JPG quality and compare to the RAW files. Not sure why only RAW and not JPG's are imported into Aperture.
What observations do others have for the Nikon D90? Do you experience the same issues? What did you do to resolve the issues?
    Thanks

Images captured in RAW have not been sharpened so will appear relatively soft. Add sharpening in Aperture as desired.
JPEG images from either camera have sharpening applied as set in the camera menus.

  • Nikon D90 Video Format

I am looking at getting the Nikon D90 for a second camera body and that it also takes videos. It uses this format; MOTION JPEG AVI FILES. I am a complete novice re. video. Can anyone tell me if this format will work in Premiere Elements 7 or earlier? I would appreciate any help.

Interesting question Barry. I am also considering the Nikon D90. Unfortunately, I don't have a definite answer to your question.
    Here are my observations:
I have used Motion JPEG 640 x 480 30 fps video files from our Canon Powershot point and shoot cameras in Premiere Elements 3. On my XP PC, I can use the MJPEG files directly in to Premiere Elements. However, when I first convert to DV-AVI using the XP Windows Movie Maker my results from Premiere Elements are slightly better.
However the D90 video is different both in frame size and frames per second: its formats are
    HD 1280 x 720/24 fps VGA 640 x 424/24 fps QVGA 320 x 216/24 fps
So I suspect that using the past (like Canon Powershot) to predict the future (D90) may not work in this case.
FYI - Have you seen this Preview of the D90? http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond90/
When dpreview does their complete review (as opposed to the current preview) they have in the past included samples of the video taken by the camera being reviewed. That sample video can then hopefully be run through Premiere Elements to observe the results.

  • Codec for Nikon D90 footage

I'm playing around with Nikon D90 footage for the first time. It imports as an Apple Open DML Jpeg 1280x720, 24 FPS file.
Any recommendation as to which Codec or sequence setting I should use to keep as much quality of the raw?
    Thanks,

I'm on a MacPro with FCP 6. I do not have an SDI connection or RAID Array drives, so uncompressed is out of the question. I wonder how much of a difference there is between uncompressed and Apple Prores, aside from a huge file size disparity. I think I will play with Apple Prores HQ.

  • How do I install camera raw 4.6 (for Nikon D90) in Elements 6 for a Mac?

I need to install camera raw 4.6 (for Nikon D90) plug-in on Elements 6 for at Mac?  I'ved downloaded the plug-in but it does not seem to work.  I've got Elements 10 on my desktop Mac but I am using Elements 6 on an older iBook G4.  Any help will be appreciated.  thanks.

For PSE 6, get the .plugin out of the download, then go to your hard drive>library>Application Support>Adobe>plug-ins>file formats and remove the old plug-in, then put just the new .plugin file in there instead. Older versions of PSE can't update ACR from the help menu the way PSE 10 can.

  • Can I use my Nikon D90 AVI files in Premiere Pro CC on my iMac?

Hi and thanks in advance to anyone who can lend me a hand. I am new to both Premiere Pro CC and Macs. I have used my Nikon D90 AVI files before with Premiere Elements on my PC with no problem, but the same films aren't working on my new setup with Premiere Pro CC and an iMac.
I can see and preview the films in the Source window but when I try to drag them onto the sequence window I get a little hand with a "no" sign.
I am using a version 7.1.0 (141) of PP CC and am on OS X 10.9
Do I need to transcode the files? If so, to what? And what is the best way to do that?
Many many thanks for any help!

Just remember, you will not always get the answer you want right away. Some people will point you to tutorials, some, like me, will attempt to help and still point you to tutorials, and some will just answer the question as best they can.
Some might insult you, and some merely insult your intelligence. Don't be offended. Do, however, search the forums as best you can in an attempt to find the answer before you post.
I realize that people don't always have the right words to describe the problem, and therefore have trouble searching. If searching fails you, just ask. It generally works out in the long run. And as you have discovered, sometimes a combination of posts may do the trick.

You do not need to convert to DNG.
The NEFs from your camera model have been supported since ACR 4.6 and 5.1.
What you need to do is update your ACR plug-in to version 5.7, the latest and last version for CS4.  Right now, you are probably on ACR 5.0, the version supplied with the original release of Photoshop CS4.
Be aware that the Adobe updater is extremely unreliable when it comes to CS5, so that you must do the update manually.  There are detailed instructions on the ACR 5.7 plug-in download page.  You MUST follow those instructions to the letter.
