Nikon Digital Mess?

I have a custom-made PC with a 146 gig hard drive and 3.25 gigs of ram, and am using PS 11.01 as part of CS4 Extended. And I think I've made a mess--maybe not.
I recently acquired a Nikon D90, and with it I shot some 450 frames of an outdoor show in Raw + fine. Instead of using the Nikon software, I imported them all into PS, reduced their physical size, and saved the reductions as TIFS for further editing. Eventually, I thought to convert them to JPEGS at 72 dpi for the customer's on-line slideshow. (This is how I've always done things with scanned film and slides.)
My 450 TIFS all have a slight magenta cast. I called Nikon tech support, and they told me that as long as I didn't do any color correction to them, my final products would be without a magenta cast on my client's computer. However, when I copied a few of the files to my laptop, they turned out to have a heavy magenta cast.
Is there anything that I can do to save the 450 TIFS, or should I just start all over again and import with the Nikon software?
Karla

Karla,
I concur with your final assessment that your monitors are out of calibration...I seem to recall that those folks who have posted here of issues with color shifts toward magenta, have often found that the monitor calibration was the issue. Why a magenta or reddish bias is common, I'm not sure, but at least it seems you're on the right track, and I hope you have a colorimeter for performing a hardware-based calibration of your monitors. If not, then you'd be well-rewarded over time if you purchased one. In lieu of a colorimeter, a software-only calibration can also be performed and is better than nothing at all. I don't know what to recommend in this latter category, but a search on Google might steer you in a good direction. I'm guessing however that even a budget-oriented colorimeter such as the Pantone Huey will still provide a better calibration than a software-only solution.
With regard to your comment of "you should give me more credit for sense and experience", I'd just like to offer a few thoughts: Firstly, while your post is well-written and reflects an intelligent mind, there isn't really much here to go on to gauge your actual experience level. Consequently, people are often left to reply in context with what they read rather than make any assumptions one way or another. Better (my opinion) to understimate your experience and say too much than to overestimate and say too little, thus begging a continued Q&A series of posts. Second, if you feel the information provided is at a level that someone of your "sense and experience" should already be aware of, please keep in mind that these forums serve as an educational tool for all who might search for similar topics in their own troubleshooting efforts. As such, if other forum users respond to some questions with more information or detail than seems warranted to you, it may well be for the benefit of those less knowledgeable than you who discover this (or any other) thread.
Also, regarding a laptop's color versus that of a monitor, something I am guessing you do know is that laptop LCDs often provide very little control over their color response, short of using whatever color management/adjustment controls are provided in the graphics chipset driver. My own experience has been that such software is very touchy, and thus rather difficult to use. Combine that with what are often no visibly indexed brightness or contrast adjustments and that just makes matters worse. I think laptops...with reasonably good LCD screens...are where hardware calibration is especially useful, as they can be used in a mode of calibrating the screen from an "as is" state, building a profile that will in turn yield a more correct color rendering by color-managed applications such as Photoshop.
cheers,
Daryl

  • ITunes won't show "video" portion of movies shot with my Nikon digital

Since I got my iPod nano (3rd Gen), I've not been able to see the video portion of my digital camera movies on iTunes. I can hear the audio, but the Quicktime video screen is blank and colored "green". These files will play with Windows Media Center but not with Quicktime, the "default" viewer in iTunes. Also, these videos don't transfer to my iPod nano either. A short cartoon movie from iTunes.com and Quicktime previews behave the same way - video part doesn't show. But the short cartoon movie DOES transfer to my iPod and it plays fine on the iPod. Please give me your suggestions to rectify this Quicktime problem. I've already uninstalled Quicktime and re-installed it; but it still doesn't work. I'm using ver. 7.4

  • Nikon D300 Raw files for 64bit windows vista machine not appearing in Photoshop CS3 raw

I purchased a new 64bit computer running Vista. I have installed Photoshop CS3 including the latest updates and the 4.6 (Camera Raw.8bi) raw update file. I included the raw file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats. I have purged cache in Bridge and I still cannot view the raw files in Bridge. I only see a gray square with a Blue NEF. I can open the files in Photoshop however. What can I do to see the files in Bridge?

    Nikon encrypts RAW file data
ByMichael R. Tomkins, The Imaging Resource
    (Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 02:16 EDT)
A news item posted on Sunday by PhotoshopNews.com reports on comments from Thomas Knoll, one of the original authors of Adobe Photoshop, relating to the RAW file format used in Nikon's D2X and D2Hs digital SLRs.
    <IFRAME src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/banners.fpl?region=112&keyword=NULL" height="250" width="300" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" vspace="0" hspace="0" frameborder="0" align="middle" scrolling="no"> <A href="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/blink.fpl?region=112&slot=1" target="_blank"> <IMG src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/bimg.fpl?region=112&slot=1&keyword=NULL" border="0" width="300" height="250" alt="Click Here!"> </A> </IFRAME>
Thomas Knoll is currently the chief engineer for Adobe Camera Raw, the company's RAW file conversion software. The PhotoshopNews item references a forum thread started by Mr. Knoll in Adobe's official user forums, where he reveals that .NEF RAW files from the latest Nikon digital SLRs encrypt data relating to the white balance setting the photo was shot with.
RAW file formats vary significantly between digital camera manufacturers (and often, between different models in a manufacturer's lineup), and the manufacturers generally won't publicly disclose the specification for the RAW file format(s) they use. Some will offer plugins or software development kits (SDKs) that enable their RAW files to be opened in third-party applications, but these generally have some limitations attached to their use.
In addition, the companies generally offer RAW file conversion software of their own, either as part of their camera bundles or as an added-cost option. Nikon offer their pro SLRs with PictureProject software that includes limited control over the RAW file conversion process, and then offer the more feature-rich Nikon Capture conversion software for an added cost. In a recent publication on the company's Nikon Pro website, it suggested that it feels Nikon Capture is better-suited to photographers, while Adobe's Photoshop is more suited to graphic artists. Still, different photographers have different workflow preferences, and for this reason third parties such as Adobe often reverse engineer the RAW file formats, allowing them to be opened in their own software - sometimes with even better image quality than the original manufacturer's software.
In a way, it is understandable that companies would want to encrypt RAW file data from their products - it allows them to pick and choose which competitors are able to open RAW files shot with their products, and allows them to generate new revenue streams from the sale of their own RAW file conversion software (or, if they choose, the sale of licenses allowing competitor programs to access their RAW file data). Nikon is not the first company we're aware of to encrypt data in RAW files; Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-F828 RAW files contain encrypted data. In that instance, however, Sony granted permission for Adobe to decrypt the data in their software. At the current time, Mr. Knoll states that while Adobe has signed a non-disclosure agreement that grants them access to use Nikon's SDK, they have not received any response to requests from Adobe that the company be allowed to decrypt the white balance data, which would allow closer integration with their software than is possible with the SDK.
The fact that Nikon has chosen to encrypt a portion of the RAW file data would not be particularly problematic for third parties to overcome, were it not for certain laws enacted around the world in recent years. One such law is the United States' "Digital Millennium Copyright Act", often referred to as the DMCA, which makes it illegal to produce technology that can circumvent measures designed to protect copyright. One could argue that Nikon's encryption of the white balance data is just such a measure - which would make it an offense for a third party without permission to make software that could decrypt the original white balance setting used by the camera when the photo was shot. One could equally argue, however, that the copyright over the RAW file belongs to the photographer who captured the image - and hence the choice over what is done with that copyrighted work is entirely up to the photographer.
Unfortunately, there's no clear-cut answer, and short of a company or programmer finding themselves in court for having cracked the encryption, there isn't likely to be such an answer any time soon. This presents a problem for third parties attempting to make their own RAW file conversion routines for the D2X and D2Hs, as if they don't want to risk opening themselves up to legal action, they aren't able to determine the original white balance setting. Hence, they must either request the white balance setting from the user as the RAW file is converted, or attempt to determine an appropriate white balance setting automatically (which would not necessarily be the same as that determined by the camera itself).
Nikon hasn't communicated their reasons for encrypting the white balance information in their latest NEF formats, but we have to say it doesn't sound like a very good idea. While Nikon Capture does indeed offer excellent capabilities for people to manipulate images saved in NEF formats, many photographers and organizations have already established workflows based on Adobe's RAW plugin for Photoshop and other image-processing tools. The biggest consequence of this move on Nikon's part seems likely to be to push more photographers onto other camera platforms. It's hard to imagine that increased sales of Nikon Capture will make up the revenue lost from camera and lens sales going forward.

  • Nikon to IPhoto to Snapfish

I got a new Nikon digital camera (D40) and a macbook pro pretty much at the same time and tried to upload my pictures to snapfish (via iphoto) but for some reasons even thought the quality of the pictures was really good in the camera, by the time it gets to snapfish the resolution is scarily low and my pictures are more than disappointing.
Has anybody experienced the same thing?
Any idea where it is coming from?
    Thanks.

    sabyer:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How are you uploading the photos to Snapfish? If you're taking the photos from the Data folder in the library package then that's the reason. Those are the thumbnail files. See TD's treatis on file access for ways to access your full sized image files for use outside of iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is it possible to use Photo Booth with a USB digital camera?

I'm an illustrator, and I have enough need for photos of myself and various objects that I have a Nikon digital camera permanently mounted on a tripod in my studio. Is it possible to use Photo Booth as a viewfinder, so that I can see the camera's-eye-view of whatever I'm shooting? I know that literally, it can be done, because I currently use Photo Booth to shoot micro photos from a Celestron USB digital microscope. So why not input from a Nikon? Can it be done? If so, how?

That would be great if it was only possible. It just can not be done yet.

  • Nikon photo transfer

I had iPhoto set so that when I connected and turned on my Nikon digital camera iPhoto (2.0.1) opened automatically. Now I have installed Nikon Transfer and said I don't want it to open auto. when I connect/turn on the Nikon, neither iPhoto or Nikon Transfer opens! How do I get one of them to do so? Quite happy to have iPhoto open but I'd at least like one of them to! Thanks.

Launch Image Capture (found in the Applications folder). Go to the Image Capture menu and choose "Preferences...". In the dialog, make the desired selection.

  • Print to video - getting digital distortion on tape

Everything went fine when I printed my time line to video. No drop frames, everything worked smoothly. Then when I watched the material caught on tape (using my sony Z1U as recording device & firewire connection) it was completely covered with pixel mosaic and digital mess.
Does somebody know where the problem could lie?
I printed on a brand new tape, and even recorded bars, so that there would be a signal underneath, which even shouldnt´t be necessary.

I got it to work AFTER I exported my whole timeline as an Quick Time Movie. And the dropped the QT movie in a new sequence and then printed the QT movie on tape. But will I lose quality when I export my timeline to an QT movie??? < </div>
No, it's a clone, more or less. You might try exporting as a reference movie. Should work.
Strange that to get FCP to work, first I had to make a Mixdown of my audiotracks and then export everything as an QT movie. Otherwise I got drop frames during playback and distortion in the picture when printed on tape. < </div>
It's not strange at all now that you've provided some more information. Your experience with your Z1 will help others who have the same machine. Keep posting your war stories.

  • Digital Cameras that have Native QT Mode for Movies

Hello everyone, some advice please. I'm looking for a point and shoot digital camera that has:
    1. An optical viewfinder, ie. Canon or Kodak as far as I can tell
    2. Good quality lens, i.e. Canon & Sony for instance
    3. Image stabilizer system Canon for instance
    4. Native mode QT videos i.e. Samsung & Nikon as far as I can tell
    5. low noise at high ISO settngs i.e. Canon but not Panasonic.
Can't seem to find all 5 in the same camera. Does anybody have experience with the same issues? Partial comaptability with QT as in with the most popular AVI file formats, seems to bother a lot of people.
Willing to comprmise on QT compatability if I have too, but obviously since I'm posting on a QT forum, QT is important to me. Would love to hear from anyone who has seen the same issues before (pun intended).
    Thanks
    iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thank you--very helpful. It might be helpful to someone else who doesn't yet have a digital camera: After playing around with Iphoto using emailed to me pictures, I thought I'd try seeing how someone else's digital camera worked with my imac. I asked a friend to bring her two Nikon digital cameras and her usb cable when she came to visit. When we plugged both ends of the cable in, we couldn't get the pictures uploaded. Her Nikon manual said to push the OK button on her camera to do this. Nothing happened. Then I saw her manual said she needed to use something called Picture Project on her Windows computer, which she then said came on a cd when she bought the camera. Figuring that maybe Nikon might have this "driver" on a web site, in mac format (like hp print drivers), I found this code and downloaded it. Again by pressing the ok button on her camera, nothing happened. So I checked around the Nikon web site, and with some computers, one must click the Transfer button from the computer to pull in the pictures (rather than push then in via the camera's ok button). Still nothing happened. When I went to Picture Project's Preferences and deselected Auto Start (from the camera, I believe), and then selected Transfer, wala, all of her pictures, transferred. Hopefully, this helps someone.
Now my mac is set up for friends visiting, with their Nikon cameras, and I am learning more about what I want in a camera.

  • Dvcprohd p2 digital artifacts

    Hi,
just shot 14 hours yesterday to come back and find that all my p2 footage has small digital artifacts in the footage. it comes and goes - like it sprinkles in for a moment and goes away and comes back a few seconds later. All the clips! Anybody else stuck with this? Any solutions! Can't reshoot. All footage is off p2 cards and deleted and on external drive.
    thanks, vscomm

Yes, it's on one frame, so I delete the bad frame and repeat the one next to it. It looks like any pixelization occurs on one frame every 5 to
15 seconds or so. It's shot on 720 24pn. Has a stutter anyway. This may work.
No, that won't really work at all. The "stutter" you see is the film cadence...take the odd frame out and it will look truly odd. Worse. I have seen digital mess on a couple shots, and am not sure what the cause was. So it isn't new. Like hits on tape or something. But not very common. Is this ALL over your footage, or on a couple shots?
Is there a way to attach a file on this forum? I made a still frame.
You need to post it to a server, then link to it with code like this : Emmy (except the "b" would be replaced by an "a"...I did this so that you could see the code)
    it happens during the transfer.
are you sure about this? Do you have the camera and cards to check? copy the COntents folder back to the card and play it in the camera. Or even use the P2CMS reader and see if you can see it on the raw P2 files.

  • Aperture Dust Off

Image Dust Off - uses a reference image taken with Nikon digital SLR cameras to map out dust on the sensor and then automatically remove its effect from NEF images shot using Nikon CPU lenses.
Is there such a thing in Aperture and how do I set it up?

This does work well for me especially with a series of dust over blue skies in say a stack. Use the Spot for the first image to kill the obvious dust at zoomed level. Then lift & stamp those adjustments over the remaining images. Just keep an eye when applying spots on areas of textures or with high contrast or edging. Sometimes spots can mess these up.

  • IMovie 6 FCE - odd error, plan B?

    Hello!
Bear with me - i'm an old time pro at iMovie (1, 4, 5, and 6), and have just upgraded to FCE HD. As in, loaded it up 6 hours ago!
So, why did I upgrade? I'm pushing the outer limits of iMovie - particuarly with titles, transitions, small video effects, and other motion - exactly what FCE is better at! I see this is going to be a huge learning curve - and i'll work my way up eventually.
In any case, I have been working on an iMovie - er, rather - half a dozen iMovies, which will eventually be combined and iDVD'd. Basically, I've been taking pictures with my Nikon digital still camera, photoshopping together some silly scenes, and placing them in the video track, complete with narration, SFX/VFX, music, and so on. It's kind of like a video comic book, actually. Each is around 5 minutes. Most are done, but there are a couple of fixes i'd like to make in FCE - particuarly with sheer lack of title options in iMovie (and plethora of them in FCE/Livetype)
Well, my biggest worry is about the problem many seem to be having with iMovie transitions not importing, or screwing up the sync between audio and video. It seems many of the posts (that I saw) were posted in 2005 - before iMovie 6 and FCE 3.5. Has that changed?
Said error is as follows: After trying to import an iMovie project via the import command in FCE, It gave a warning - "File Error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
    Ooookay...
So, plan B - better safe than sorry. Like I mentioned, most of these "movies", more of chapters really, are finished. It's just one or two I'd like to re-work a bit.
Since this is mainly just a hobby, i'm not TOO worried about pristine quailty, just as long as the timing is correct. So, I should probably just export what I have, and re-tool the resulting movies on FCE. Question is, what format should I use? It's a DV project, so I can just export "full quality", however I don't know enough about FCE to know what it's "native formats" are.
Oh - I have also tried to simply open the "Timeline Movie" from the Cache folder in the iMovie project (control-click the package, "Show package contents"), but it siezes up FCE.
In any case, the one critical condition about the movie is the timing - because I don't have a video camera, and the movies are made with stills, the timing between audio and video is pretty critical.
Well, I hope that made sense - I think I need some sleep!
Just in case: I'll repeat the questions:
    1. What does that error mean?
    2. Are the iMovie > FCE oddities fixed?
    3. If not, what's the best format to export my iMovie, to import into FCE without too much quality loss?
    4. Is there any special thing I need to do to ensure that the audio and video of the exported movie sync up?
    Thanks for helping this newbie!
    -Dan
PS: I'm hoping to get a MiniDV camcorder for my birthday in 2 months. (well, i'm asking at least! ) Are there any particular things I should check for in a model to ensure maximum FC compatibility?
    15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 (non-HiRes), iMac DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Daniel.
The problem with converting iMovie into FCE is that it is like changing apples into bananas - a tricky task!
As for an export choice I am not absolutely sure without doing a test but I think "Full Quality DV" will be the best. (I have only got iMovie 4 so don't know whether iMovie 6 has different options).
Just test it and see - it will probably take less time than writing a letter!
    Ian.
