Nikon EXIF data incomplete

If I look at the EXIF data for a file in iView Media Pro I can see what metering was used for a shot (i.e. matrix, program, spot, etc.). The same field in Aperture shows up with numerical values (0, 3, etc.). Is this a Nikon thing or a problem with Aperture?
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yeah, the same thing happens to me with my Nikon D50 and the latest Aperture version. I guess Aperture doesn't recognise some special Nikon EXIFs.
If you abosolutely depend on this feature you may "translate" the EXIF information using EXIFutils (U$D30) from http://www.hugsan.com/EXIFutils .
You can, for example change all numerica data to actual metering mode text: "Matrix, Spot, etc..." But please be aware that EXIFutils are command-line utilities that need some typing / scripting.
Otherwise we'll have to wait for Apple to fix this.
These are the standard values and corresponding metering modes.

  • EXIF data incomplete

Some of the EXIF metadata is not imported. ISO Speed Rating for Canon S1 IS is missing. No camera I have tested has th Focal Length (35mm) filled in and some lens information is missing. I know the data exist because I can see it in IView and Graphic Converter. Is there any way to know Aperture's import settings for EXIF for different camera models?

The S1 IS is only JPG but the EXIF data is available as I can see it in other apps. (iview and Graphic Converter). I have also imported raw images from many other cameras and the EXIF data is not consistent. Sometimes the Focal Length (35mm) is filled in and sometimes it's not. (yes for Nikon D2x, no for Canon 20D) sometimes the serial number is filled in (yes for Nikon D2H, no for Nikon D2X). It makes me very uncertain of the accuracy of all the information.

  • EXIF Canon data incomplete

    Hi,
Using a Canon 5DIII and there are missing EXIF fields. One of particular interest at the moment is the autofocus Microadjustment value. There may be others missing but this one stands out. Does anyone know of any way to get a more complete display of EXIF data?
    Thanks.

Exif data and Aperture have always had a bumpy relationship. Pretty much apart from the obvious universal fields the rest are hit or miss (mostly miss )
With my Canon 40d one of the Canon specific stuff has ever shown up. I'm happy that they finally got the lens right (a Tamron that has ben reported as any number of different lenses over the years).
If you are interested and really need specific fields not shown  you will have to get to them outside of Aperture, either before importing or after if the originals are stored as referenced.
The best tool for this is ExifTool by Phil Harvey It is a command line tool (there are some GUI frontends for it if you really need to go that way) that will do just about anything you could want to do to a digital image file.
You could get the fields you want using Exiftool and add the data into the image in a number of ways, as a comment, tag or as a custom field.

  • Export of RAW files loses EXIF data

I am having a problem when I export files out of the PSE Organizer from RAW format to JPG that I am losing EXIF data on the resulting JPG file.
I am using PSE 6 on Windows Vista and primarily manage my images in RAW format (Nikon D300 NEF) within the Organizer. I am using the latest Adobe Camera RAW plugin ver 5.1 but I have tried this with the last three Camera RAW plugin versions without any difference.
I typically need to get the RAW NEF images into JPG format to post them to my blog so I normally select several NEF files at once within the Organizer then CTRL-E (or File, Export, As New Files), select JPEG, then Export.
The resulting JPG file has no EXIF data for the camera (e.g. Camera make, model, f-stop, exposure, etc) that was on the original NEF file. I am determining this by right-click, Properties, Details on the file within Windows explorer.
Other tests I have done to diagnose this are:
    1. Opening an NEF file in Full Edit mode from the Organizer then doing a File, Save As (JPEG), the missing EXIF data *does* get saved properly. The problem with this approach is that it is not suitable to export hundreds of NEF files.
    2. I downloaded a trial version of PSE 7 and it behaves identically to PSE6 in this test.
    3. I downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 2 and the export feature works properly in this test.
    Any help would be appreciated.

My observations of what is happening is exactly what you are seeing with one exception about the XMP update. <br /><br />My reply that I posted about seeing the XMP file being updated was based on the observation that when I did a File > Write Keyword Tag the time and date changed on the XMP file as seen with Windows Explorer. • Nikon Shooting Data & Caption Field in Lightroom

I have a Nikon D100 Camera and am still using Nikon View 6.0.0.  I have thousands of pictures shot with this camera.  I have always filled out certain fields in Nikon View's IPTC.  I did misinterpret a Nikon Transfer Option long ago.  ("Nikon Transfer" is for transferring the digital photos from camera to computer.  The term "Shooting Data is their term for EXIF data, I guess.  Like Shutterspeed, Focal Length etc...)  I mistakenly checked the box that said, 'Copy Shooting Data to the IPTC Caption field.  At the time I didn't quite understand this and thought it meant if you checked this box you would have all the Shooting Data Available to be read by other programs in the future.  (The only way it would be available.) I don't think this is the case now because I transferred a new photo to my computer without this box being checked and I still got all the Shooting Data in Nikon View's window, I just didn't get it in the IPTC box.  The Shooting EXIF Data is still inside the photo's file (or in a sidecar). without it turning up in the IPTC box. Yes?
I've downloaded a tiny free program, for now, that that reads and displays digital photo metadata.  Everything works fine.  My keywords come through in the program's keyword field and my file names.   The only thing is that when I call up the Caption field in this little program it first brings up the text that I originally entered in Nikon Views IPTC, like it should.  But then directly after that I get[#Beginning of Shooting Data Section]ONikon D100OFocal Length:.......ect. ect...listing all of the shooting data, then[#End of Shooting Data Section].  All of this is listed after my caption text!  I just wanted what I entered in the IPTC as a caption!  Not the shooting data!
All of the Shooting Data is fused with the Caption that I originally entered in the IPTC!   Because
I originally checked that Transfer Options Box.  I've asked another person if you could somehow separate the Caption from the Shooting Data by computer language?  He didn't know as yet.  He said, "Try and separate it in Nikon View."  I did.
My questions are:  I have some thousands of photos now with all the Shooting Data as part of the Caption.  When I import these photos into Lightroom and Lightroom's  Metadata Panel automatically fills in with the photos metadata information, will the Caption field be the Caption and Shooting Data together?  Will my EXIF Shooting Data turn up under the right EXIF field in Lightroom's Metadata Panel?  Should I not use the Lightroom IPTC Metadata Panel and use another?  If the Shooting Data is still part of the Caption in Lightroom, because there is so much of it, will it just run out of space and run out the end of the box?  Is there a way to separate my  Caption from the Shooting Data so Lightroom will not include the Shooting Data in Lightroom's Metadata Panel under Caption?  I have been studying from a Lightroom 2 book.  I am not acquainted with Lightroom 4.  But I will be buying Lightroom 4.
Thank You so much for any information on this,
    Thank You
    Sandy

    Sandy,
I suspect that you'll have the same problems in Lightroom. It sounds like Nikon View has put that shooting data where you don't want it.
In any case, you can download a 30-day free trial of LR 4.1 and import a few of the problematic images and see how their metadata looks in Lightroom. It won't cost you anything, not even time if you decide to buy. And if you do buy the program, you can just enter the serial number in the trial version, and it will no longer expire.

  • Wrong EXIF data for JPEGs in Bridge and PS

    Hello,
My Nikon D300 files are not being properly read by Bridge and Photoshop. RAW files are fine. When I get file info for JPEGs, though, much of the EXIF data is corrupted. For instance, ISO Speed is shown as "51200" instead of 500, and Focal Length is shown as "2.0 mm" instead of 140mm, etc. This incorrect data shows up in Bridge (in the metadata panel and file info) as well as the file info dialog box in Photoshop.
When I get the EXIF info in Preview.app, all the info is correct.
Anyone know what might be going on?

Update - this problem is not limited to my D300 files. I just realized that the JPGs from my Canon SD800IS point & shoot are also not being "seen" properly by the Adobe apps. The ISO value doesn't even show up in CS3 apps, but I can see that data in Preview.app.

  • Script to update EXIF data in iPhoto '08

I shoot some photos with a digital Nikon D50, and some with a Leica M3 (35mm film). The pictures from the digital Nikon are encoded with plenty of detail in the EXIF tags, but the digitized images from the Leica and the 35mm film have only a few tags from the scanner.
I wanted a script that would update the desired EXIF tags direct in iPhoto. I looked around on the Internet at other scripts, and wrote a simple script to update a few EXIF tags on selected images in iPhoto.
I hope this script is of use to others.

  • Exif data info

I am unsure about the proper place to post this question,so i picked this forum ? Does anyone know if file exif data contains info that can prove a specific camera or lens was used to produce an image?  for instance could i prove one nikon d300 shot an image verses another d300. thanks for any help rendered.

…Now i am just hoping there is not some sneaky way to change exif within a source file…
    Alas, there is, Donald.
There are a number of utilities that can mess around with the Exif data.
Also, a simple method used by thieves bent on stealing an image is to open one of the images (file A) shot by their camera, open it in Photoshop, then open the image they want to steal (file B).  On file A, they double click on the background to unlock it, drag the layer(s) from file B on top of file A, and delete the original now-unlocked background.  Now they have the stolen image with the EXIF data of their own shot.  The last steps are to go to the Layer menu in Photoshop > New > Background From Layer and Save the file.
Such is the world we live in.
A raw image is more difficult to forge.

  • Subject Distance in EXIF Data

Now that LR 2.6 reads EXIF Subject Distance into the catalogue, does anyone know how this information can be added for images that have been imported using previous versions of LR?
    Tony

    Thanks Ian,
Read Metadata from File isn't the answer since doing this obliterates everything that has been added to the metadata since the original import, but does add the Subject Distance.  I'm using RAW (NEF) files without xmp sidecars.  If I save to xmp and then Read Metadata from File, it works.  I just hoped there might be a simpler way to get the Subject Distance into the catalogue.  I also have many jpg images in my catalogue (before I started shooting raw) and the xmp solution can't be applied to those, although I could save the metadata to the jpg files (I don't really want to do that either).  I originally started with a Nikon D50 and those images have Subject Distance in their Exif data, so the information is there for all my images, I just need an easy way to get it into the catalogue.

  • CS6 Bridge "Not Displaying Subject Distance Information in Exif Data"

In Bridge CS5 the "Subject Distance" information is displayed for Zoom lenses which report distance information, under the Camera Data (Exif) panel.
In Bridge CS6 either 64 or 32 bit, no "Subject Distance" information is displayed for the same files, which report this information under CS5 bridge.
I have checked that the "Subject Distance" is checked and turned on under the preferences section. Not sure if the data is either not being read or just not being displayed.

    Thanks Ian,

  • LR 6.0.1 EXIF-Data are buggy after export

We export a Nikon D810-photo with Lightroom.
Here you can see it: http://bilder.uchrin.de/test/DSC_1917.jpg
    With a simple batch in php - like this (array exif_read_data ( string $filename [, string $sections [, bool $arrays [, bool $thumbnail ]]] )) -
we read out the EXIF data. here see the result: http://bilder.uchrin.de/test/simple.php
Now you can see COMPUTED.Copyright, COMPUTED.Copyright.Photographer and COMPUTED.Copyright.Editor are corrupt.
COMPUTED.Copyright: efan Uchrin, (C) by St
    COMPUTED.Copyright.Photographer: efan Uchrin
    COMPUTED.Copyright.Editor: (C) by St
In LR 5.7.1 are the EXIF-data OK.
    Is there any help?

    Stefan,
I examined the test file closely with Exiftool, and it shows all the metadata correctly.  I think the issue is another one: Lightroom CC: JPEG format tripping up other programs. Notice that many of the string-valued fields are corrupted, e.g. IFD0.ImageDescription, IFD0.Model, and IFD0.Make.  LR 6 writes JPEG metadata in a way that strictly conforms to the standards but is atypical of the common layout of metadata, tripping up other programs that aren't strictly conforming.
Which version of PHP are you using?
The end of the thread I linked to contains a workaround, using the Run Any Command plugin and Exiftool.

  • Exif data from sb-800 flash (d70 camera)

    Hi
Ive seen that aperture provides more exif data than iphoto or Photoshop elements. I did a test where I tried my various flash settings, ttl-balanced light, ttl (regular) but I don't see any differentiation in the exif data. This is important when reviewing images to see which I took using each setting, and learning which would be most useful in various sitations.
Anyone who has a similar setup or has used exif for these type of flashes? If so, please post and perhaps let me know what I'm missing here.
    Thank you
    Greg

    Hi
Thanks for the reply, and yes Capture NX does have this information there, I find this very useful for analysis of flash photos and what works best in different settings.
    May I ask:
    1. I have a VR Nikon 70-300 lens but the vr data is blank even in Capture NX (although I downloaded 1.3.1. Do you have a vr lens and was this data available?
    2. At a first glance, it appears aperture has more exif data than Capture but perhaps the specific data that Capture NX has is more useful?
    3. If you've used both Capture NX and Aperture (and/or other apps) for those with Nikon cameras which did you find most useful?
    Thanks

  • LR3.2 export - no more EXIF data on JPEG

    Hello everybody,
    trying to get some help...
My setup: iMac 24 running OSX 10.5.8 and Mac Book Pro 15" same OSX.
In both I'm using LR 2 for years, and couple of weeks ago I purchased the LR3.2
My photographs are in my galleries in Smugmug.
The images I want from my Nikon D 700 (NEF files) or other cameras I uploading for years in the Smugmug account
by sending initially the images in a reduced size and JPEG format to my desktop, and upload from there .
In the Smugmug clicking on the Info button anybody can see the EXIF data.
Now after the upgrade to the LR3.2 I got a problem: from the MBP everything is fine like before.
From the iMac - that is my main computer - the JPEG files will not carry the EXIF data. Nothing.
I did check the settings on the iMac and MBP, and are absolutely identical. However something might be different.
I wrote to Adobe, and after two weeks, 5 mails, and a few hours on the phone  twice (shared the screen, so they can see it in life demo , what is going on - otherwise is hard to believe it...) nobody knows the solution.
I called Apple , and because is not their software, they couldn't help.
Tried the Delete and Download again and reinstall stuff, but is still doing the same thing.
Anybody has the something like this?
    Any hints?
    Thanks in advance
    Joe

Well the files are reduced to 1200 pixels in longer side in LR. But would be a very strange thing to be a problem because the image is reduced to any specific size.
And as I said: the settings are identical in LR2 and LR3 and in both computers (iMac and MBP) .
The two LR2 is exporting with EXIF and the LR3 on MBP does. The LR3 in iMac is the only stripping the info.

  • Camera Raw 5.6 - ISO speed is incorrect in EXIF data.

Shooting with a Nikon D3S at ISO's above 25,600, the EXIF data reports 36,000 no matter what the actual ISO was when the shot was taken. Do not know if this is Nikon writing the wrong data to the EXIF or ACR 5.6 interpreting it.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

I don't have ACR 5.6, but the DNG converter converts ISO 102400 to 36864; ISO 51200 should be correct. The reason is, that 102400 is the first full stop ISO over 65535, the limit for an USHORT field value. Time to change the declaration to ULONG.
However, there is a big problem: while the ISO specification in the NEF file is in Nikon proprietory format and it can grow for a long while, the ISO in the Exif format is unsigned 16bit value, it can not be expanded; a new field needs to be defined (expanding the existing field may cause havoc under older programs).

  • LR 1.3 Export of NEFs to JPEG Loses EXIF Data

When I use Lightroom 1.3 to export Nikon RAW (NEF) image files to a new directory as JPEGs, all of the camera EXIF data is missing in the exported JPEGs created by Lightroom.
In my Lightroom Catalog Settings, every option is checked on the Metadata panel (Include Develop Settings inside Metadata in JPEG...., Automatically write changes into XMP, and all Metadata browser categories).
On the Lightroom Export dialog, File Settings Format is set to JPEG, and Minimize Embedded Metadata is not checked.
My images files are from a Nikon D200.
I run on Windows XP SP2.
Any suggestions, or is this a bug?

What are you using to look at the metadata? If you do not check minimize metadata I always get everything written. Some programs cannot see the metadata though.
    >In my Lightroom Catalog Settings, every option is checked on the Metadata panel (Include Develop Settings inside Metadata in JPEG...., Automatically write changes into XMP, and all Metadata browser categories).
This is irrelevant. For the exported jpeg, the only thing that matters is the export dialog. Also you should generally NOT enable automatically writing XMP data as it will slow down lightroom considerably (see the FAQ and the sticky threads).
