NIKON NEF and previw

i have a Mac Pro and a Mac air, and a Nikon D3 and a nikon D700.
When i copy the NEF files generated by the 2 cameras on the Mac Pro i can see the icon preview ONLY for the D3 files but i can see both preview files with Mac Air.
How is it possible?
Also not possible to see the icon preview on the G5 but it works on a G4.
Strange, very strange.
Any help will be appreciated.
thanks
PS
of course the folder where the NEF files are has been set up (options) in order to show the icon previews.

I was in the process of setting up the Library Buddy (LB)for the first time, attempting to add my current iPhoto library to the LB. Once I did that I tried to open the original library and found I could no longer access it. A dialog box popped up telling me that I do not have permission to access these files and or they are now locked. I've always had access to the library. Anybody out there know how I can get to these files?

  • Nikon NEF and working in IPhoto to Photoshop CS

I have a Nikon D70 (non "s") I can download my RAW (NEF) photos to IPhoto and see them in Iphoto as well as in the Nikon software but when I try to open them in Photoshop I get a notice that they are the "wrong type of file". Has anyone experienced this and how do I correct it? Thanks

On both computers Photoshop CS6 installed, so this will do the trick?

Yes Certainly. PS has been reading Nikon NEF files for YEARS. The only problem you may run into is with the Newest Nikon cameras. That is if you have the newest Nikon. That is until Adobe updates Adobe Camera RAW to support the newer Nikon cameras.

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

The D5100 was first supported in Camera Raw version 6.4.

  • Photoshop CS4 and Nikon .NEF files

I just downloaded Photoshop CS4 for a trial basis. I use 2 nikon cameras and 1 Canon and shot is RAW format. The RAW file extensions are .NEF and .CS2. I had the understanding Photoshop had no problem reading these file formats (through ACR). However, I am not able to access photos under the .nef format. How do I access files under .nef?
    Thanks

It reads it fine and I believe CS 3 does as well.
Perhpas there is a trial of Light room which users the same engine as ACR but has more organizing features. And the spotting tool works better.
But I assure you that ACR reads nef what camera do you have? Is it a recent release?

  • Lighroom and Nikon NEF files

I have some questions about Lightroom's handling of Nikon NEF files, specifically the parts of the NEF files that Nikon has decided it is a brilliant idea to encrypt. I am using a Nikon D200.
How does Lightroom handle white balance in a NEF file? Has Adobe licensed the "mini-SDK" from Nikon, is the white balance estimated from the image data, or how is this done?
And what about the sharpening (and other data?) - how does Lightroom handle that? Is it always the same (by camera)? Can the default settings be customized?
I am also interested in knowing whether using NEF+JPEG enables Lightroom to use more of the image metadata, as white balance/etc is not encrypted in the JPEG file. Will using NEF+JPEG give me the in-camera settings for the data that is encrypted in the NEF file? I'd be happy to shoot RAW+JPEG with a small JPEG if it helps Lightroom with the in-camera settings.

To answer your question, yes, Adobe has licensed the mini-SDK from Nikon in order to get at the encrypted white balance info. Nearly everything else is encrypted and inaccessible and can only be accessed by Nikon software.
Ironically, all this has done is push me almost 100% in favour of DNG.
Shooting NEF+JPEG will not get you anything more, in terms of more available data. Technically a NEF image will have an associated in-camera preview that Lightroom replaces with its own previews (no one wants to see the actual raw data, which hardly looks like an image). Apparently there is a limitation with Lightroom such that identically named image files differing only in extension will not be imported properly, anyway. Check the archives of this forum.
The in-camera settings in the file are not useful for you unless you use Nikon imaging software.
I've pretty much decided the following:
    - Shoot only raw, and let your camera and Lightroom generate the previews you need at the time.
    - Create a camera profile for importing those raw files. Every camera responds a little differently.
    - Either keep the raw files or convert to DNG for archival purposes. The arguments for and against this are easy to find elsewhere on these forums and on the web.
If you need to be able to tweak your NEF images on the computer as if you were tweaking the camera controls /before/ taking the shot, you have to use Nikon software. I personally see little value in this, but your kilometreage will vary.

  • Nikon 5700 NEF and DNG

Does iPhoto '08 import DNG photos?
I've tried converting some Nikon 5700 NEFs converted to dng by either Lightroom or Adobe Converter, but get the unsupported format dialog. Odd that it attempts to import and then warns you, rather than telling you right away that it won't accept the files.

    kenneth,
i think the problem is not all with aperture but in Mac OS X. try opening the nikon 5700 nef file with Preview and you'll see. my brother has a nikon 5700 and he had no problems opening nikon 5700 nef file on mac os x prior to 10.4.(?) running on a third-party upgraded powerbook (the wall street). he finally bought a new mac and this is when all his nikon 5700 nef files became incompatible. so something happened during the series of Mac OS X upates that broke the support for the nikon 5700 nef file.
i suggest that you also submit a feedback requesting support for the nikon 5700 nef file.
ps: they do listen, just be patient.

  • I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files

I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files.
I just downloaded the plug in for CS5.5 and it does not work. I put the Camera Raw.8bi file in the correct location as specifiec in the "read me" file.
Can someone guide me on how to do this, adn make it work?
    Thank you.

    so far no luck.
I ran DNG program for Windows (I have Win 8) and ran the menu to convert
the files on the same memory card from the camera.   Of 135 files, the
status column for the first 68 files said "converted," but the for all the
rest, it says "There was an error writing the file."
Of the files that "converted," they do not open, and I get the same error
message as before: "Could not complete your request because it is not the
    right kind of document."
    So, what a mess.
I get conflicting indications of the version of Photoshop I have. When i
click "About Photoshop in the Help menu, it says CS5 Extended.    The Error
message for the dng files says CS5.1 Extended.  Does it make a difference?
I've been at this three hours now.  It's a pain.   For many years I had no
problem with NEF files, as I had installed the plug-in as required. This
time it is not working. So I am not new to this.

  • PSE 13 and Nikon NEF files

Considering upgrading to PSE 13 and was wondering if PSE 13 supports Nikon NEF files for a Nikon D5300 without an additional plugin. The D5300 is shown as supported for version 8.6 converter and I currently have PSE 10 and have to use the DNG converter on all NEF files which is not only a pain but time consuming.

    Hi,
The D5300 is supported by camera raw 8.3 and later.
PSE 13 includes camera raw 8.6 so should be able to read your files.

  • Nikon NEF thumbnails and Lightroom

I am trying out Adobe Lightroom and the Nikon NEF files from my D70s are imported directly into Lightroom just as I had hoped they would be. However, I am flying blind when it comes to seeing the thumbnail previews of those same files "before" I do the actual importing.
Only the "NEF icon" shows up in the directory where the files are located, so I really don't have the ability to choose which file I wish to import into Lightroom unless I look at them in Adobe bridge first. This is a little inconvenient to have to do that.
Also If I do have a file in "CS2 raw", I don't have an option to send it directly to Lightroom... only to CS2 itself.
If anyone can help with some advice here, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Ron

  • Error with Nikon D600 and PSE 11 in RAW 9 (.nef) files.

When I used PSE 8, I could easily open any .nef files and edit them.
Now with PSE 11, I get an error message that says my camera is now not compatible. I have had a Nikon D600 and use a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor VR 24-85mm 1:35-45G, Nikon ED EF-S Nikkor VR 70-300mm 1:45-56G lens and a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm1:35-56G lens too.
The error message says "...file appears from a camera model which is not supported by installed version of Camera Raw ...". Why it PSE 11 not backward compatible?
I bought PSE 11 2 weeks ago. I bought the Nikon from a local camera shop in November 2012.
Per the Adobe website, I have installed DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1. None have resolved the problem after fully installing the download (through Finish) and rebooting the PC several times.
I tried to download DNG 7.3, it fails
Where can I obtain the CS6 file the Adobe website says should resolve the problem too?
I have an HP PC running Windows Vista 32 BIT Processor.

I just caught the part about your  having "uploaded DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1".
Those are not "patches" at all but stand-alone applications on their own right.  You don't just install the DNG Converter, you actually have to run the converter in a separate step and convert the raw Nikon NEF files to raw DNG files.  The DNG Converter does not do anything magically or automatically.  Point the DNG Converter to the folder containing your raw files; it works on folders, not on individual files.  But you shouldn't even remotely need the Adobe DNG Converter in the first place.
However, most importantly, what you need to update is your ACR plug-in.
No matter when you buy an Adobe application, it will ALWAYS need to be updated right away, and so do all plug-ins.  What you buy is always the original release, and by the time it's out there it will inevitably be obsolete.
If you go to the Help menu in Elements, I'm assuming it will have a menu item for Updates (or Check for Updates), that should offer to apply any applicable updates to Elements and to ACR plug-in.

  • Using PS Elements 10 and MUST access Nikon .NEF Raw images from Nikon D60 and D7100 cameras.

Previously installed update for D7100, but it's no longer recognizing the Nikon .NEF files.  What's the solution other than buying a new version? There are important images that need to be converted to JPEG for upload to a newsletter that will be published this week.  Thanks.

I am using Windows 7.  I think that the best path might be a third party conversion program.  Do you have a recommendation?
