Nikon NEF not importing to LR2. Help?

I have the D7000 and when I tried to import my session to my LR2 library it didn't find any files. The files are on my desktop. CS4 didn't recognize them either. I updated Camera Raw today and still nothing. LR and PS worked fine with my Pentax and my Cannon but the Nikon is throwing me for a loop. Help?

To use D7000 RAW files in LR 2.7, you can use the DNG converter and convert the files to DNG without the need to upgrade to LR 3. However at present the latest DNG converter uses ACR 6.2, see link which won't convert your files, you will need ACR 6.3.  ACR 6.3 is presently a RC, when it is released as a full release you can use it with your files. Otherwise you will have to upgrade to LR 3 and use the LR 3.3 RC which supports the format.
Had my attention drawn to a RC of the DNG converter, download this and you will be able to use your files without upgrading.

  • TIFF Files Not Importing!! Help!!

I have a whole batch of Photoshop illustrations (NOT photos) that are in TIFF format. each one is about 20MB each, and for some reason i cannot load them into iPhoto, nor can I open them in Preview.
any thoughts as to why this is? I want to put the drawings together and order a book using iPhoto 5, but obviously I can't get them in.
I CAN convert them to JPEG and they load in fine and look correct, but i'm afraid i'm going to lose crucial color data by compressing them.
Help! any thoughts, solutions, or shoulders to pout on?

I checked the permissions and they are Read & Write - thank you for that advice.
I went back to trace some steps and here's what i'm doing. maybe this might shed light? i don't know for sure:
    1. create the illustrations in Photoshop (RGB)
    2. Flatten the layers, convert to CMYK
    3. Save image on hard drive as TIF with a name like: XXXXX01.tif
    * now here's where a problem begins
    4. i noticed that when i save in Photoshop, a message like, "Some files being saved contain non latin characters, they will be incompatible with some browsers"
    5. the file is saved and can be opened again, without problem, in Photoshop.
I am guessing that perhaps this might have some relation to why the files may not import into iPhoto the way they should.
in retracing my steps, i tried saving these files with different names, as RGB, as .RAW, as .EPS and in as many profile configurations i could think of - all with the same final result: could not import into iPhoto.
I really appreciate the consideration in trying to help me with this. any further thoughts or feedback would be very much appreciated.

  • Nikon .NEF Files - can not import these files - help please

    Hi Folks.
I just made the plunge into the dslr world, purchasing a nikon d40x. I want to shoot raw files and work with the keepers in PS. I saw LR and watched several on-line tutorials by michael tate, and decided to DL the trial version. I'm running windows XP, and attempted to import 51 .nef files and 8 .jpg files. I got the .jpgs - no problem, but received an error message for the .nefs as an "unrecanized format." I am importing directly from the camera, not a card reader.
I have searched this forum quite a bit, and I am well aware of the perils of ver 1.0 anything, so I'm not totally surprised there are so many usability issues on this forum. I am surprised to learn that RAW files are not standardized, which seems counter productive to me. Cn you imagine various audio CDs that were proprietary? In reading this form, it appears I will need to focus on the .DNG format, as archival across multiple hardware is (or will be) important to me.
On another note, how does a company release even a 1.0 version that does not reliably import nikon and cannon raw files? aren't these the perhaps two most popular camera manufacturers world-wide. In searching this forum, I noticed issues with nikon and canon raw files. Presumably oly, fuji, sigma, minolta, panasonic, kodak, and others work perfectly fine.
I am prepared to wait while adobe gets this program ship shape, as LR looks like it is going to be a great program. Perhaps I need to get version 1.01, but I certainly do understand this: ver 1.0 is really a beta version, and were all beta testers!
Again, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. If I have to wait on LR for a while, is there anyone out there who would recommend another program?
    Thanks.
    SP ~

  • NEF edits from Nikon Capture not imported to Lightroom?

I shoot with Nikon D200. I have lots of NEF images that I have previously edited in Nikon Capture Editor 4.4.0 and kept as NEFs. Now I purchased Photoshop Lightroom 3. I have imported NEF images into the Lightroom catalog, without moving the files into a new folder.
Problem: the edits previously done in Nikon Capture are not there. I can not figure out what I am doing wrong, but I do expect that the edits previously done to raw files will be recognized in Lightroom. There must be a simple solution.

There is none. Edits done in Nikon capture are stored as proprietary metadata in the NEF file. No program from a non-Nikon manufacturer can read these. If you want your edits in Lightroom, you will have to save tiffs from the Nikon program, which will render a new file with all the edits in the actual picture data, and import those into Lightroom.

  • My .MOV files will not import!! HELP!

I have a Nikon D3100, and have taken a few videos. I am trying to import them into iMovie '11, but it won't work. They are .MOV Quicktime movies, and I cannot figure out why it isn't importing. I thought these types of videos worked. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Have you tried putting your SDHC card in a card reader?
Then in iMovie, click FILE/IMPORT MOVIES/ and navigate to your card reader.
If it offers to Optimize Media, say yes and choose Full.

  • Version 3.4 will not import earlier Libraries-HELP!

I've just upgraded Aperture to 3.4.1 and now I cannot open the 3.3.2 Library, I get this message:
There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/PHOTO BU/Aperture Folder/** US iMac Aperture Library 2?.aplibrary”.
The library could not be opened because the file system of the library’s volume is unsupported.
So my whole Library is not accessible now.
Can anyone tell me how I can work around this, or does anyone know where I can get a copy of 3.3.2 and re-open the Library, export the images then re-import them into 3.4?
    Thanks!

    Peter,
check the file system on your external disk.
Aperture has always required the Aperture library to be on a disk formatted MacOS X extended, but previous Aperture versions did not check this, see Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library.
If the drive still has the default formatting, maybe MS-DOS (FAT), then you need to move the Aperture library temporary to another volume and to reformat the drive with Disk Utility before you can use it with Aperture.

  • No thumbnails for Nikon NEF files in finder

After upgrading to Tiger 10.4.2, Nikon NEF files imported through Image Capture no longer show a thumbnail image in the finder. The icon is a generic Preview document with RAW written on it.
I also have an issue when I go to change the default application used to open these files. In the info window I change the "open with" application and then select change all . . . at this point I get the confirmation window, click continue, the confirmation box closes and the file reverts back to the original Preview icon. Perhaps these two issues are related?
Anyone have an idea how to remedy these?

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

  • Lightroom 4.4 will not import NEF RAW files from Nikon D610

I shoot a Nikon D800 and have never had any issues importing my NEF RAW files into Lightroom. I borrowed a friend's Nikon D610 and shot a bunch of NEF RAW files. I downloaded them to my computer the same way I always do. For some reason, Lightroom will not import them. The error message is: "The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (455)"
My Lightroom 4.4 is current and up-to-date.
Bottom line: I have a bunch of RAW photo files I can't import into Lightroom for editing. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    >Just curious -- is there some difference between the NEF files created on my Nikon D800 (which are easily imported into Lightroom) and the NEF files created on the Nikon D610 (which are not easily imported into Lightroom)
Lightroom 5 supports the D610. There is a big difference between nef from the D610 and older cameras. They were shot with a camera that Adobe hadn't profiled yet when LR 4.4 was out. Otherwise, if you hack the nef files to read that they were shot on a D600, LR 4.4 will read them, but I would caution against doing that as the sensor is slightly different on the D610 than on the D600, resulting in differences in color rendering. Simplest is as dj says to convert the nets to dng (which embeds the newer profiles in the file) or to upgrade to LR 5.

  • Nikon D90 RAW (NEF) files imported via iPhoto are not recognized

Would appreciate your help.  Just got an iMac.  OS X 10.6.7.   Installed Aperture 3.1.2.  I shoot RAW+JPEGs.  Imported both files fine to iPhoto '11 from my old PC.  When Aperture then imported an Event from iPhoto, I  still see two versions of each shot, but Aperture calls them both JPEG.  On one version the metadata is complete, on the second some is missing (e.g., Exposure Mode, Lens).  Both are shown as 12.2 MP, no matter what.  Can't do any editing this way!  Any thoughts on what might be going on?  Many thanks!    --Bob

I just pickup a D300 and unfortunately Aperture nor iPhoto will not import the picture in the RAW format. Do you know if the RAW format will be updated in the new OS release that is to be announced?
I also contacted Nikon about the Capture NX program that came with the camera and Nikon told me that they are working with Apple to resolve the issues with there program as well.
It would be nice if the Camera venders would work with Apple before introduction to make sure the software is available to support the hardware they introduce..

  • HELP - How can I import Nikon .nef files into Lightroom?

I installed Lightroom 5 on a Mac and tried importing (copy as DNG) .net files from an SD card I used with my Nikon D750 (LR 5 is supposed to support the D750).  LR couldn't display a preview or import that file type so I used the latest Adobe DNG converter (version 9) to convert the .nef pics on the SD card.  LR then recognized the images but STILL WOULD NOT IMPORT them.  I get an error message saying the images could not be "read."  I've tried 2 different SD cards.  !Any suggestions?  Thanks.
I even tried uninstalling Lightroom 5 and installing a trial of Lightroom CC.  I tried importing .dng files that were converted from Nikon .net files with the Adobe DNG converter.  I received the error message in the screen shot below.

This error message means you have to set the Destination directory to have WRITE permission.
So, determine what directory is specified in the Import dialog box on the right in the Destination section. Then go to your operating system, find this exact directory, and then change the directory to have WRITE permission.

  • I can't import Nikon NEF (RAW) files.  It says it doesn't recognize the file.  Help.

I just installed Nikon Transfer and then View NX2 with Nikon Transfer 2 and successfully transferred over 300 RAW (Nikon NEF) files from my camera (Nikon D600) but Lightroom (v5.6) won't import them.  It says it doesn't recognize the files.  How can I resolve this?

Obsolete versions of Nikon software corrupt Nikon raw files slightly making them unrecognized in Adobe products.
You can reverse this corruption by using the utility from the following webpage:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
Basically you need to use Nikon software that is at least as new as your newest camera or don’t use Nikon software at all.

  • NEF format imports into iPhoto but not Photoshop??

    Hello!
I'm currently using a Nikon D70S, shooting in RAW format. The .NEF files import just fine into iPhoto, but for some reason, if I try to edit them in Photoshop CS, it gives me this error message:
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."
...Okay! I'm not sure why this is happening. I'm on the latest update of the OS and iPhoto. The only workaround I've found so far is that I can open each file up in Preview and then save it as a tiff. But for hundreds of photos... It's pretty cumbersome.
Any ideas on what might be going wrong? My .NEF files have opened in Photoshop CS a couple times, but I'm not sure why that was, and I wasn't paying too much attention to this issue until now when I need to edit a huge amount of photos at once. Help!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.33GHz/1GB

If you are trying to open the RAW files, you will need to drag them from the iPhoto view pane into PSCS. Opening in external editor will send the OSX created JPEG to PS and that may not be what you want. Opening the RAW will also only work if you never edit the JPEG either within iPhoto or with an external editor. After that, the JPEG will always be used. When opening the RAW, you will need to save the file outside of iPhoto, convert it to JPEG, TIFF, or PSD format, and then re-import that version into iPhoto to keep it part of the library. Also, make sure your version Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) supports the D70S. Most updates are free and the D70S isn't that old and it's a different RAW format than the D70.
    Hope this helped!
