Nikon nef raw files

hi guys first vsit to the forum but hopefully not last!
i use nikon d90 usually with nikons own capture nx2 software which is great for just tickling photos a bit before printing but sadly lacking on the creative side, so bought elements 7 , now the images straight from camera won`t open in elements but strangely i had scanned images in and altered in nx2 which open in raw in elements? after reading up some answers i tried changing 8bi plugins ( ie moving old one and putting new one in its place but still they won`t open !!!! which is a tad annoying . it might sound stupid but i still don`t know exactly which bits are in conflict anyone tried this with this camera combination cheers

yes i think this was my problem , i just got myself confused! when i went back and deleted everything then reinstalled it it was fine , but many thanks for bothering to help i`m sure i`ll be back on with more problems cheers john

Subject: nikon nef raw files
As John explained, one of the key mistakes people make is not properly deleting the old plugin that is in the File Formats folder.
Please make sure/confirm that you deleted the old plug-in or moved it entirely out of the File FOrmats folder. Renaming them, or moving them to a subfolder of File Formats won't work.
This has nothing to do with installing camera profiles.

  • Photoshop CS4 will not open Nikon (NEF) raw files.

I recently tried CS6 Suite.  Trial was over and I went back to Photoshop CS4.  However, it would not open Nikon (NEF) raw files. I uninstalled and re-installed the PS CS4.  This did not fix the problem.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks,

NEF files from which Nikon camera?

  • How to import Nikon Nef (raw Files) ?

    Hello
I'm having problems importing Nikon Nef Raw files, PSE9 is displaying the message The file is damaged or file format
cannot be included. Any suggestions please.

You are going to need Adobe Camera Raw 6.3, but the only version that has been released is the Version 6.3 Release Candidate, which I don't think can be installed with PSE. You will have to wait until the final version of Adobe Camera Raw 6.3 is released.
The only workaround is to use the Version 6.3RC DNG Converter to convert your RAW files to DNG files, which can then be accessed by PSE.

  • Can Photoshop Touch for iPad opens Nikon NEF RAW files?  How?

Can Photoshop Touch for iPad opens Nikon NEF RAW files?  How?

Hi. With the current PS Touch version RAW files are not supported for the PS Touch import.
You can vote for this idea which goes in to the same direction.

  • OS X Lion does not sort Nikon NEF (RAW) files...

After my upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, I've noticed that Lion can't sort my Nikon NEF (RAW) files as it did in the past.  It treats them like JPG images, no matter how I try to ARRANGE BY.   Has anyone experienced this?  Or perhaps know of a solution to fix it, as I shoot in both JPG and RAW with my Nikon D80 camera.
    Thank you.

PathFinder is an alternative/complement to Finder.
It offers several choices including directories always on top followed by the files. Also split windows.
I use it  and Finder - both have there places on my machines.
As a further note I found that on my MBA running Lion is is even crazier, Arrange by Kind scrambles the files in no obvious order.
Also looking at 10.6.8 I find that Arrange by KInd from the Action Button put the files in reverse alphabetical order by file type (NEFs before JPGs) while Arrange by Type from View in the Menu bar puts them in alphabetical order by file type.
I've had follow-up form Apple on my reporting of this....so we'll see what happens.

  • Using a Nikon Nef Raw file with PSE 9

I am just starting to look at the RAW capability of my Nikon D3100, it comes with software called View NX 2 which your supposed to use to deal with the RAW files etc, but I am wondering how good is PSE 9 when working with (Nikon's) Nef RAW files? Should I be using View NX 2 for this?
    Thanks.

Both are good softwares but PSE gives you some extended capabilities of editing and organizing.

  • Importing Nikon NEF Raw files into iPhoto

Recently I purchased a Nikon D810 camera and have been trying out various settings to determine the quality of picture I can get. As a way to run through the test, I took pictures with different RAW (NEF) settings. I also took pictures in JPG format for comparison.
What I have found is that iPhoto (version 9.6) will import all of the JPG files but only the RAW files taken in the Large 14 bit or Large 12 bit format. It will not accept the RAW Small photos.
Has anyone run into this problem? And, if so, any ideas about how o address this?
I am using a Mac Pro for this work.
    Thanks.

That is what Apple's RAW support page says, so you can do nothing about it:
OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support
    See the footnote at
    Nikon D4S†
    Nikon D810†
    Notes
    †Nikon RAW L format only.

  • I can't import Nikon NEF (RAW) files.  It says it doesn't recognize the file.  Help.

I just installed Nikon Transfer and then View NX2 with Nikon Transfer 2 and successfully transferred over 300 RAW (Nikon NEF) files from my camera (Nikon D600) but Lightroom (v5.6) won't import them.  It says it doesn't recognize the files.  How can I resolve this?

Obsolete versions of Nikon software corrupt Nikon raw files slightly making them unrecognized in Adobe products.
You can reverse this corruption by using the utility from the following webpage:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
Basically you need to use Nikon software that is at least as new as your newest camera or don’t use Nikon software at all.

  • Nikon NEF raw files show up in Bridge as "Untagged RGB"

I have a D700 and shoot in the AdobeRGB color space. However when I click on a picture in Bridge, the Metadata window shows "Untagged RGB". Why is Bridge showing inaccurate file information, and, I assume, not interpreting and displaying the picture with correct colors?

    Charles,
Raw files don't have colorspaces so the "Untagged" is essentially correct in that case. You select the colorspace when the raw file is developed, such as in Adobe Camera Raw.
Now, both Nikon and Canon allow colorspace to be selected in-camera and they will use this colorspace if Jpegs are being created.
In the case of raw files from the camera, I believe that the PC/Mac software provided by both manufacturers (Capture NX2 for Nikon?) will pick up a special flag from the file to set the default colorspace for the developed raw file to what was selected in camera. I am not sure about this though. Adobe Camera Raw, however, ignores those flags if they exist. In ACR, it will default to the colorspace last used for raw developing.

  • Legacy Nikon NEF RAW files.

I have been using Nikon Capture as my raw processor for almost 10 years now.
As you can imagine, I have quite a legacy of edited NEF files.
I am now planning to acquire a new Mac Pro computer and, in the process, move from Capture to Lightroom (I had tried LR 2, but wanted the better curve treatment now offered by LR 3).
    So my question is :
When opening NEF files, does LR recognize / take in account "new" / edited values or does it ignore all changes and return to "out of camera" / original settings ?
In other words, will I need to install Nikon Capture on my new computer ?
thank you for your valuable input.
    Philippe Carly

As suggested else-thread, Lr will not be able to see the proprietary changes made directly to NEFs.  Other folks have exported TIFFs or other renditions and then imported these into Lr using a parallel directory structure alongside the NEFs. This way you have a reference you can go back to, and the original NEFs you can treat like negatives.
This can be a really good opportunity to revisit some of your past work, and perhaps discover some hidden gems.

  • How can I open Nikon NEF raw files in CS4?

I've tried all the tips I've seen in the Forums so far to no avail.  I've downloaded the latest software, I've found the Carmera Raw.8bi file - it's in the Adobe/Plug Ins/CS/File Format.  I have Cs4 selected as the default to open NEF files.  What else can I do?  I have the D90.

The latest version of camera raw is 5.7 for cs4.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4683
If you go to the About Plug-in under the help menu and choose camera
raw, you can see which version you have.
The location should be C:/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS4/File Formats.
If you have a 64 bit windows, there will be one in the Program files/common files
and one in the Program files (x86)/common files.

  • NEF RAW Files from Nikon D7000

I have just bought a nice shiny new Nikon D7000 and set it up to use Nikon NEF RAW files.
I've been processing RAW files on Elements for about 7 years now but when I downloaded from my new camera I was informed that the filese were corrupt or not acceptable to PSE 8. My D200 had no such problems.
How do I get over this?
    Andy

Open the editor and click help à Updates
You should be able to update to Adobe Camera Raw 6.2 with PSE8 which will cover the D7000
In case of difficulty Andy, go directly to the ACR site for manual update.

  • How do I set up Premiere Elements 12 to open Nikon D810 NEF, RAW files?

I'm running a Windows 8.1 computer with Premiere Elements 12.  New Nikon D810 RAW files will not open in program.  Is there a plug-in or other fix for this?

    gsorozan
You cannot import Nikon D810 nef files into Premiere Elements 12. For that you need to have Camera Raw at least 8.6 which is supported by Premiere Elements 13. So, if you want to import Nikon D810 nef files into Premiere Elements, you need Premiere Elements 13.
However, if you convert your Nikon D810 nef files into dng files with the DNG 8.6 converter, you can import those dng files into your Premiere Elements 12.

  • I can't open Nikon D800.nef (raw) files in my Photoshop CS6 (64 bit), however, I can open .jpg files

I just purchased and installed Photoshop CS6 (64 bit) to use with my Nikon D800.  However, I can't open the .nef (raw) files but the .jpg files from the same camera will open.  What do I need to do to open .nef files from the D800?

Hello! By default, Photoshop CS6 cannot open the NEF from a D800, you need to have at least Camera Raw 7.1, as explained in this document: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Go to the Help menu, and select "updates" and you'll launch the Adobe Updater that should suggest to install Camera Raw 7.2 that supports the D800, and many other cameras.

I have a new Nikon D810 camera. My new iMac cannot open the NEF/RAW files from it...Anyone have any knowledge of this?

If you will take the time to send Apple feedback, they will add RAW support - when I got my Canon, it wasn't supported either. I filed feedback and, two months, later, there was an update which included my camera model.
