Nikon NEF red's show to orange as Camera Standard color profile in LR/ACR

I am using a D4s and the red colors in my NEFs in LR 5.5 show more orange.  They are not accurate and I am using Camera Standard or Portrait.  My screens are calibrated. I see a difference (more true) comparing with Nikon's native program.  Even in Capture One the reds are more true.  Am I the only one to see this in LR?  If I leave the file in Adobe Standard its too saturated and also wrong.  Why is it that I notice this more in Nikon files than Canon files in LR/Camera Raw (using 8.5 now)?

  • Nikon NEF raw files show up in Bridge as "Untagged RGB"

I have a D700 and shoot in the AdobeRGB color space. However when I click on a picture in Bridge, the Metadata window shows "Untagged RGB". Why is Bridge showing inaccurate file information, and, I assume, not interpreting and displaying the picture with correct colors?

    Charles,
Raw files don't have colorspaces so the "Untagged" is essentially correct in that case. You select the colorspace when the raw file is developed, such as in Adobe Camera Raw.
Now, both Nikon and Canon allow colorspace to be selected in-camera and they will use this colorspace if Jpegs are being created.
In the case of raw files from the camera, I believe that the PC/Mac software provided by both manufacturers (Capture NX2 for Nikon?) will pick up a special flag from the file to set the default colorspace for the developed raw file to what was selected in camera. I am not sure about this though. Adobe Camera Raw, however, ignores those flags if they exist. In ACR, it will default to the colorspace last used for raw developing.

  • Nikon NEF/LR5 ACR Conversion Help

Hi.  I'm running into an issue when I import in RAW/NEF files into LR5 for processing that I could use some help with.
I understand the basics of RAW files, that LR5 & ACR can generally only read the basic info from the camera's sensor/EXIF file (ISO, shutter speed, exposure, wb) and pretty much dismisses customized settings the user sets in the camera when shooting. Given that I tend to do the majority of my frame set-up in-camera however, having LR5 dismiss those customized settings is creating a tremendous amount of rework with varied levels of success for me in simply getting the shot back to the same level as what I'm pulling out of the camera.
Is there a work-around or way to import Nikon's sensor data or to set up a custom color profile in LR5 that I can build to mirror Nikon's sensor data, or am I pretty much out of luck with finding an efficient solution to this issue that doesn't involve using some other third-party software to do RAW/NEF file conversion?  If it makes a difference, I'm shooting with the Nikon D4.  I suspect there are others shooting with the Nikon D800 and some of the newer mid-to-high end Nikon cameras that are running into this issue as well that would benefit from finding a work-around for this issue as well.
Thanks in advance for all help and suggestions.

I think the above link will provide a very good appreciation of what you are experienceing. The only software that will provide the same rendition as your camera when you are making multiply adjustments to camera settings in the software provided by your camera manufacturer.
The tools are there in Lightroom for you to create presets which you can apply at import. Also there are special profiles for your camera which can be applied in the camera calibration panel which mimic some of the camera special settings.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The D5100 was first supported in Camera Raw version 6.4.
In Photoshop, click Help > Updates to update Camera Raw.

If you are seeing a Red LED, you may have a faulty MagSafe Adapter.
I remember reading that the orange light is produced by a combination of a Red and Green LED. If that's the case, It seems that the adapter isn't lighting the green LED properly at that time.
I would suggest you seek service with your nearest Genius Bar (Apple Retail Store) or Apple Authorised Service Provider as they have access to diagnostics which may assist in isolating any hardware issues you may be experiencing.

  • No thumbnails for Nikon NEF files in finder

After upgrading to Tiger 10.4.2, Nikon NEF files imported through Image Capture no longer show a thumbnail image in the finder. The icon is a generic Preview document with RAW written on it.
I also have an issue when I go to change the default application used to open these files. In the info window I change the "open with" application and then select change all . . . at this point I get the confirmation window, click continue, the confirmation box closes and the file reverts back to the original Preview icon. Perhaps these two issues are related?
Anyone have an idea how to remedy these?

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

  • Cannot see Raw Nikon NEF images in finder windows

I had a problem with my Macbook pro so I had to re-install the operating system, which is Leopard.
Now I can't see the my Nikon NEF images in the finder windows, they only show the jpeg pictures.
I remember this was a problem over a year ago and somehow I resolved it, but I can 't remember how. I'm doing the usual thing such as click VIEW - OPTIONS - ALWAYS OPEN IN ICON VIEW - but this does not seem to work.
Can anyone remind me what to do?

The issue should only occur if you shoot raw. Currently OS X can only display/read certain RAW camera formats. These are OS level, meaning iPhoto, Preview, Mail, Aperture and others are effected. However adobe products are different because they use Adobe Camera RAW.
I would expect JPEGs TIFFs and PSDs, both thumbnails and files, to view fine. RAW files will not view from the D300, but the D200 is supported.
There is no way of knowing when support for the (not-so-)new files will be available. Rumor has it it will be 10.5.2, but only Apple knows that. You can head on over to the Aperture forum and read to see if some have work-arounds.

  • V10 & Nikon NEF files no thumbnails

I'm attempting to load some pictures off of a 32gb sdhc card in organizer, the file show up in the window with no pictures in the thumbnails. I just did a 8gb card and they showed up fine.
Any ideas why they don't show up with the 32gb card? or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve

May not be quite the same thing but I've been having trouble getting elements 10 or organiser to allow me to preview Nikon NEF files transferred from my D7000 to my PC that i want to import from my pc and cards. ( and yes I am running the latest Adobe codec which supports the D7000 and actually allows the import... you just cant see what the file is before hand)
I have been running windows 7 64 bit version.
Just discovered that even though many say there is no such thing that a codec download exits on the Nikon website for the D7000 that allows windows or at least the live view gallery to see the pictures. - and it works with windows 7 32 bit and 64bit
Not only can i now see what i'm importing before i hit the import button in Organiser and elements 10 but I can now see them in my windows explorer as well.
NB the codec from july 2011 thats on the Microsoft site doesnt seem to cover the nikon D7000 but the Nikon codec direct seems to sort it.

  • Nikon NEF thumbnails and Lightroom

I am trying out Adobe Lightroom and the Nikon NEF files from my D70s are imported directly into Lightroom just as I had hoped they would be. However, I am flying blind when it comes to seeing the thumbnail previews of those same files "before" I do the actual importing.
Only the "NEF icon" shows up in the directory where the files are located, so I really don't have the ability to choose which file I wish to import into Lightroom unless I look at them in Adobe bridge first. This is a little inconvenient to have to do that.
Also If I do have a file in "CS2 raw", I don't have an option to send it directly to Lightroom... only to CS2 itself.
If anyone can help with some advice here, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Ron

  • Camera RAW support 2.2 update and Nikon .NEF unsupported image format

    Hi,
I Use a Nikon D2x and only take raw images (.NEF file)
After I update from RAW support 2.1.1 update to RAW support 2.2 update, all my raw image file (.NEF file) taken before 13th September 2006 ! would not display - In the Aperture program, if i navigate to a project / folder and clicked on a thumb nail in the browser, I get a magenta / cyan screen showing in the main viewer panel with unsupported image format. ?
This is my worst-case scenario ! - I have entrusted Aperture with all my digital images (all raw .NEF) images taken before 13th September 2006 are un accessible with camera RAW support 2.2 update installed !
I have deleted (the 2.2 update) “from” System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle and reinstall the RAW support 2.1.1 update.
    * NOW I can now see all my raw Nikon .NEF images and they are now all fully functional again *.
Their is a problem with the Apple digital camera RAW support 2.2 update, it rendered the Aperture program useless to me for my older .NEF image/files (as above).
    This requires a fix ASAP
    Martin

Thankfully, I wasn't affected by the issue given I'm currently with Canon. There have been Canon woes in the past though.
On a side note, I never update anything until it has been out for a few weeks just to be sure. Because Aperture is such an integral component of my studio and business, I make sure everything always works before making any updates or changes - including upgrading cameras.
I'm sure the next update will fix the magenta issues.
    Best,
    CD

  • TS2518 My RAW (nikon .NEF) files changing to a dull, darker version of themselves after selecting them for the first time after import.

My RAW (nikon .NEF) files are literally changing to a dull, darker version of themselves after selecting them for the first time after import. I.e. The correct photo (light/color/etc) seems to be there and then a second later the photo changes. It's almost like it's showing a quick enhanced version then back to basic raw image. Started within last two updates.
Is there a fix or is this the straw that forces a switch to Lightroom?

Just recall that Aperture (or any other 3rd party raw converter) has NO information about the JPEG preview and how it was made.  That information is camera-vendor proprietary.
Also note that there are like 6 "picture styles" in camera and this change you're seeing is entirely dependent on how you have them set.  If you have your camera set to "vivid" or something you'll see more of a change than if your on-camera is set to "faithful."
That said, people here ALSO complain that Aperture's initial renders are TOO vivid, the exact opposite of your complaint, so you can't please everybody (in some cases, it seems you can't please ANYBODY ;-)
Aperture provides a starting point.  Again, if you don't like it, you can tell Aperture to go with a "punchier" interpretation at its first render.  In the import dialog, try setting Aperture to use the "auto enhance" preset which is built in.  Aperture will add a little vibrancy adjustment, and it will add a curve, which will greatly add punch to the image.  If you want adjustments in a different direction, you can create a preset and set it at import.
The only thing Aperture CANNOT do is what you're asking, which is "take the JPEG that my camera vendor generates through some voodoo and try and render the raw file just like that."  It's, unfortunately, impossible to do.

  • Nikon D700 RAW import shows only dotted boxes, not thumbnails

I am unable to see thumbnails of the RAW images on the memory card of my Nikon D700 when I import images into Aperture.
What I see during an import is a series of frames with a dashed or dotted border that represent the correct number of images on the card. I can select these boxes, but the selection is not indicated with any kind of highlighting, just with a number displayed on the import button. I can, however, import my selection, and once the images are imported, I can see thumbnails in the library.
If I shoot JPG images this is not a problem, only with the Nikon NEF files. I am using the Lossless Compressed format plus a normal quality jpg.
My look at other threads shows some people with D200s have been able to solve this, and they have mentioned fiddling with a USB setting on their camera. However, the D700 has no such setting.
Since Apple now supports the D700 in RAW mode, how can I get the thumbnails of the images in the camera's card to show up on screen during an import? It is a hassle not to be able to see which images I'm importing while I'm importing them.
    Thanks!

    Ibartram,
I am having the EXACT same problem as you. I have the new Olympus E520— which like the D700, was not suported by Aperutre until the recent upgrade. Like you I was happy to finally have my new camera supported by Aperture and like you, I cannot see thumbnails of my RAW images on my memory card when using the import function in Aperture.
As you have said: Everything is fine AFTER I import, but prior to import, when reading off my card, only empty dotted boxes.
Also, I cannot see the images in the finder either. Are you having this problem as well?
Do you connect your camera directly to Aperture or do you use a card reader? I use a card reader.
Please let me know if you find a solution to this problem. Or if there is any other information I can give you. It's not just a Nikon problem or a D700 problem. After reading your post my guess is that it's a problem with newer, previously unsupported cameras.
It's no good not being able to see which images I'm importing until after they're imported.
