Nikon Nikkor 18-55 (non-VR), 55-200 VR

I shot images for and made two profiles, available here (and also submitted to Adobe).
NIKON 18.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6
NIKON 55.0-200.0 mm f/4.0-5.6
Both were shot under similar conditions:
indirect evening sunlight (even and relatively bright, but possibly changing in intensity)
8.5"x11" print on plain paper (crisp and high contrast, but subject to a little warping)
from a tripod (only pivoting the camera during each iteration, not panning)
one focal distance per focal length, all at f11 and ISO 100
nine images per shooting iteration (except one of the 18-55's iterations, for which I forgot one image)
three iterations for the 18-55 (18, 35, 55); five for the 55-200 (55, 70, 102, 135, 200)
RAW images (NEF, converted to DNG for the profile creator)
default settings except for entering dimensions for the profile creator
using a Nikon D40x
I posted a few example images are included as well, in case they are of interest. (If anyone is interested in the RAW images, I'd be glad to share those as well.)

I have moved the profiles (retiring the server which I had them on before): http://www.markfickett.com/lensprofiles/.

  • Lens Profile for Nikon Nikkor AF-S 18-35mm 1:3.5-4.5 G ED

    Hi,
    I'am missing the Lens Profile for the above Lens from Nikon. The Lens is build since January 2013 and I hoped that the new Lightroom 5 includes a Profile für this lens.
    Does anybody know when Adobe will update Lightroom with this Profile? Or does anybody has build his own Lens Profile?
    Best regards

    Nikon Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Telephoto Lens for Nikon DX and FX SLR Cameras
    Model: 2164 | SKU: 9336284
    Capture sharp digital photos from a distance with this telephoto lens that compensates for chromatic aberrations and reduces ghosting and flair for clear, detailed images.

    Sale: $2269.99
    Hello, I have been looking into purchasing a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and was considering the purchase (order online or from the store) from Best Buy.  However, the price at Best Buy is $2270 and $1700-$1900 everywhere else and without tax if you purchase from the big NY camera shops.
    I understand that BB needs to have some overhead built in because of their corporate structure.  A good example is the pricing difference between BB and those same NY online stores for the Nikon 70-200 VR2.  Best Buy has it for $2400 and they have it for $2160.  Thats about a 10% over price.  The 24-70 is about a 25% over price.
    Is it possible that the 24-70 Nikon price is a miss print?  I'd like to take advantage of the 18 month financing at BB but not at a $470+ penalty.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    UnChained,
    After
    reading your initial post I also thought it was a bit strange that we were
    selling this lens above MSRP. Because of this I have sent an email to the
    appropriate business team here at our corporate headquarters asking them if the
    price we have this lens listed at is correct. As soon as I hear back from them
    I will post back to this thread.
    Thanks for

  • Image dimensions not consistent (Nikon vs. Apple / Aperture)

    I just realized something strange about RAW (NEF) images taken with my new Nikon D700 and copied to my Mac: according to Nikon's specifications (http://tinyurl.com/54cdn9) full FX size RAW images are supposed to be 4,256 x 2,832 pixels.
    My Mac however thinks these images are 4,256 x 2,828 pixels - no matter whether I look at the Finder info (Get Info), open the RAW file in Preview or import it into Aperture.
    But when I open the very same RAW file with Photoshop, do some basic RAW processing and look at the image dimensions once the file has been opened, it has the 4,256 x 2,832 pixels that it actually should have. Same thing when imported into Adobe Lightroom, by the way.
    I remember also having realized this differnce in dimensions with my D300. My Mac thought it had different dimensions than the ones as specified by Nikon and recognized by non-Apple applications.
    Now, I am quite a bit concerned about losing 4 pixels in height - not of course because the images get dramatically smaller, but because they are (incorrectly) resized and lose quality.
    My questions would be:
    Am I the only one with that inconsistency? What dimensions do your D700 or D300 images have? Are these consistent to Nikon's specifications?
    Do you agree that those 4 pixels affect image quality?
    Or is there a good reason why Apple is tampering with image dimensions and I just don't get it? What am I missing?
    Comments welcome!

    Garp wrote:
    So what you're saying is that while the number of pixels is different in height, there is no sort of scaling etc. applied to the images when rendering them in different height as specified by the camera manufacturer?
    Or at least very, very little. It is not even sure that Nikon's calculations give a more correct value than Apple's.
    What if it were not 4 pixels that were different, but 200 or 400? Wouldn't some distortion be visible in the images or would these 400 px just get cropped away?
    I'm sure it would be visible at 400 pixels difference.
    I apologize if I may sound ignorant, but I just don't see any reason why an app would not adhere to a camera manufacturer's specs and apply differing image dimensions for no apparent reason, even if it's just 4 pixels?
    I do not know the exact reason either, but I'm sure there is one. What I know is that interpreting a RAW file is not trivial. The same discrepancy is there with both my D300 and my D40X.
    By the way, I tried as you suggested, fired up my Windows XP on VMWare and installed IrfanView and Picasa - while IrfanView follows Nikons specifications with RAW dimensions of 4256 x 2832, Picasa does not: 4284 x 2844.
    Very strange thing... and I thought I was experienced in digital imaging and photography... hmmm.
    I'm sure you are. But we cannot all know everything. You can search the forum for other discussions on the subject. I'm sure you can google for an indepth explanation as well, even though I do not know which key words to use.

  • The sims 3 non parte più !!

    Ciao ragazzi, ho un I mac da 21, 5 pollici da circa un anno e mezzo e da poco ho acquistato un Iphone 4S
    Il mio problema nasce con i The sims.
    Inizialmente comprai i the sims (base + 2 espansioni) e li installai sul computer. Giravano perfettamente
    Possibile che tutti riescano a giocare a The sims tranne io?? Andava tutto bene, perchè non mi apre più i dischetti del gioco?? (sia i vecchi, che i nuovi )

  • Lens correction settings in LR3

    Hi guys! I have downloaded LR3 yesterday and played with trial version for a few hours now. Looks like a very welcome upgrade over the 2.x version. However I cannot fully appreciate the way lens corrections module is supposed to work.
    I am a nikon user with 28-75 Tamron lens. After setting "custom" lens correction profile and choosing Tamron as lens manufacturer, LR3 accurately suggests my lens model and assigns an existing adobe profile. So far so good. But there is one thing that keeps me from feeling all happy and excited about this new feature: Lightroom would not allow to save different default settings for various focal lengths. For instance, the named above 28-75/2.8 tamron lens has somewhat considerate barrel type distortion at 28mm, and at the same time at its maximum of 75mm geometry distortions are almost non-existent. So while I am happy with how LR3 handles the wide angle distortions, it makes things a lot worse with telephoto range when I apply default lens corrections.
    Hence the question: can I somehow make settings in lens corretions module specific to the focal length used? Of course, I would like LR to do that for me, but since it cannot, is there any walkaround? Tweaking settings for each shot is time consuming, and I see no reason not to make this process a little bit more automated.

    Adani2, I have encounter similar problems with the same lens on my Canon 1D Mark III (a 1.3x crop camera).
    The quick answer to your question is no.  There is no setting in Lightroom that allows for correction at a specific focal length, apparently the software is suppose to automatically determine that.  I use to have a D80 with the Tamron 28-75 before I switched to Canon.  So I decided to process a few shots with LR3 to see if your problem was the same as what I encountered on my 1D3.
    I used LR3's lens correction on three pictures, each a different focal length (28, 40, and 75).  At the extreme ends, I found 28 and 75 to not vary much from the same image corrected with PTLens (the current progam I use to correct lens distortions).  However, at 40 I ran into the same cropping and over correction problem I did with my Canon 1D (albiet it is much worse on the 1D than the D80).  It is discussed more in depth here: (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/656057?tstart=30).  Below is a picture taken at 40mm (f2.8) with the Tamron 28-75 on my old Nikon D80 with the "corrected" image overlayed on top (opacity 50%):
    Before auto aligning of layers in Photoshop:
    After auto aligning of layers in Photoshop:
    Interestingly, the difference between PTlens and the original image for the above shot is virtually zero which is consistant with reviews about this lens (http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/291-tamron-af-28-75mm-f28-sp-xr-di- ld-aspherical-if-nikon-lab-test-report--review?start=1).  Why LR3 believes there is distortion when there isn't any is rather perplexing.
    My suggestion, for this lens on a crop body, would be to not bother making any lens corrections except for critical pictures (e.g. architecture) taken around 28mm.  The distortions for this lens are, for all practical purposes, negligible on cropped camera bodies.

  • Which of these cameras should I go with?

    Hi all,
        I am buying my wife a new digital camera for Christmas.  My budget is $200-$300.  I have it narrowed down to these:
    Olympus Factory Refurbished SP-800 UZ- $229
    Nikon Coolpix P100- $319
    Kodak Easyshare Z981-$ 200
    Nikon Coolpix L110 $195
    Nikon Finepix S2700 $$199.99
    She likes the look and feel of a SLR, which all of these have.
    So which one is the best and why?

    BetterWay wrote:
    For a non-SLR choice, I would recommend a Canon G12.  It has many SLR features(exposure compensation, diopter) and produces excellent images.
    FWIW, the Canon point-N-shoots continue to win most of the reviews in that category.
    For small SLRs, check out the Nikon D7000 or Canon 60D.
    As of now, Nikon is winning the high ISO battle over Canon, but either brand will produce excellent images.  Nikon's do render skin tones better, if that matters.
    If you go the SLR route, just make sure to ditch (keep) the kit lens and get either brand's highly rated (expensive) zoom or fixed lenses to reap the benefits of the current crop of sensors.  Without good glass, you will never realize the full potential of your expensive SLR.  An inexpensive body with an expensive lens wins every time.
    If it were me, I would not consider any brands other than these.
    One last piece of advice, if you go the SLR route, never purchase a third-party kens.  They just don't make the cut.  I know from experience.
    Thanks,
    BetterWay
    I disagree here.  Older third-party lenses were often junk, but modern ones can be quite good.
    At this point, nearly all of my glass is third-party (Sigma and Tamron), mostly Sigma.
    If you want an ultrazoom, Sigma and Tamron are really the only way to go - The Tamron 18-250 was the first UZ lens to be regarded as "good" (not excellent, but considering most of its predecessors were "crud", a major step up).  The 18-270 was an improvement, and Sigma's 18-250 DC OS HSM is a great lens - While I have better (faster or longer) glass, the 18-250 is my vacation lens.
    However, if not going for a fullblown SLR, I agree - the G12 is the way to go.  It doesn't have that "SLR feel", but as I stated above - the "SLR feel" is a disadvantage unless you actually are using an SLR.
    *disclaimer* I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of Best Buy, Geek Squad, nor of any of their affiliate, parent, or subsidiary companies.

  • D7000 H.264 to ProRes - Ridiculously long conversion times

    When converting the D7000 footage from h.264 to ProRes for editing in Final Cut, it's taking absolutely ridiculously long to do so, even with short clips. I primarily use the Canon 7D. When converting 7D footage with those same output settings, it's acceptable the time it takes. But, with the D7000's footage, it's then astronomically longer of a process.
    Does anyone know why? I'm assuming it has to do with the higher compression of the Nikon footage, but I wanted to see if there is anymore light to be shed on this.
    Thanks in advance for taking time to read through this.
    Evan

    Shooting on the D7000, I used Image Capture to import a 2 minute 1080p24 clip that was 325 megs,
    Compressor processed it to ProRes422LT using 7 of my 8 cores in about 7 minutes to a file that is now 1.2 gigs.
    So, roughly, I'm looking at 6-8 times real time to process H,264 to ProResLT into a file that is roughly 4x the size of the  original.
    The image is lovely but shooting through my Nikkor primes has several negative aspects, most notably, today's autofocus lenses have focus barrels that go through the entire range in 120 to 200 degrees. My ancient manual Nikkors had focus rings that used 200 to more than 360 degrees of rotation to go from minimum focual distance to infinity. This, in combination with a split image rangefinder or microprism, meant precision focus was easy to achieve on the older lenses. Today's lenses have tolerances that are too tight for manual focus, merely letting go of the focusing barrel pushes the lens past the exact focus point. Of course, a precision focusing aid is not an option on any of Nikon's "professional" cameras these days.
    Auto focus tracking while shooting is unreliable and unprofessionally lame. Manually tracking focus while shooting requires a very good monitor hood/magnifier. This requirement alone makes the whole DSLR video thing totally stupid and completely amateurish. Even though I scored a new camera, I'm stuck with this lame process because some pinhead at my company has suddenly decided bokeh is cool.
    Why doesn't Nikon just adapt their CMOS, lens mount and basic controls to a dedicated, fully professional digital cinema camera?

  • Graphics driver has stopped and recovered

    While playing Max Payne 3, Bf3, Far Cry 3 and War Thunder I encounter crashes (After around 40-60 min) with the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" message. I have been monitoring the temps of my motherboard, gpu and cpu and none are exceeding excessive temperatures. My GPU temps maxes out at 75 c under full load 60 min ingame.
    It only seems to crash when playing DX10/1X games. Been palying Arma 2 for hours and hours online and never had any problems. Same with source games.
    Now the strange strange part. When I play the games in Windowed mode I never encounter these problems.
    Anyone had this fixed?

  • Depreciation Area posts APC twice

    Dear Experts
    We want to adjust APC & Dep in Non leading ledgers as per Local GAAP
    I've kept the following settings for my depreciation areas in OADB
    01 - Leading Ledger - Ledger 0L - Posting Ind 1
    11 - Non Leading Ledger DE - Posting Indicator 2 or 4
    Now when I do an asset acquisition, system posts the depreciation in Ledger 0L & DE correctly. But another entry is generated in  DE ledger just because we have keeping it 2 or 4.
    System doesnt identify that a posting has already gone to DE and still tries to create another entry and I feel its a bug / technical issue.
    So it must to keep posting indicator 3 for Dep 11 and to have another Dep area say 20 (11-01) with posting indicator either 5 or 6. to avoid this duplicate posting?
    Please suggest.
    Regards
    Kapil

    Hello Kapil,
    You need to use derive depreciation Area
    Area                                GL indicator        Ledger
    01        Leading Ledger   1                          0L
    11        Non Leading         3                         DE
    90        Difference             6                        DE
    90 must be set up as (Area 11 - 1)
    When you post Acquisition let say 100, Both ledger will be posted
    Document no: 1  (in the accounting document Ledger group is Blank: meaning all ledgers are posted)
    0L    100
    DE   100
    When you post depreciation 20. (2 documents will be posted, 1 for 0L and 1 for DE)
    Document 1D:
    0L 20
    Document 1E:
    DE 20
    In case there is a difference between APC and Dep of Area 01 and 11
    Leading APC: 100 Non Leading APC: 200
    Document 1 APC:
    0L 100 (Area 01)
    DE 100 (Area 01)
    Document 2 APC:
    DE 100 (area 90 Area 11 -1 )
    That gives you 100 to 0L and 200 to DE
    Thanks!
    Jhero

    Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You shouldn't need to install any software to download your pictures. iPhoto can work with hundreds of cameras all by itself. I would suggest you search or post in the iPhoto 6 forum to see if anyone else has had the same trouble with your model camera. If you do post there, be certain to let them know exactly which camera you have, that will be very important and which version of iPhoto you're using. (You can see that by choosing "About iPhoto" from the iPhoto menu.)
    -Doug
    P.S. If you need to, you can change which application will open when you connect your camera or choose to not open an application at all from the preferences in the Image Capture application.

  • Problem with protecting images from copying.

    Woah, hold on... I just got back from a  shoot and checked out my site only to realize (I don't know why I just realized it) that none of my 200 + images in my galleries are protected against downloading! I was so used to the script I had im my old site I took it for granted. So my question is can I use the below script in the head to prevent right clicking or is there a simpler way to protect my images (albeit light protection)?

    I don't think flash is the way to go now as it's on the way out. I would look into html5, JS... If you do a web search you will find quite a few free and usable "bits". I agree that Muse should have more functional and relavant widgets.
    If you still want to use flash for an image gallery then check out the free ones here http://www.paulvanroekel.nl/picasa/visuallightbox/index.asp . All you need is Picasa. Once your gallery is created locate the folder and upload it to your server. Then embed it into Muse. I use it for "Page Flip" galleries. Works like a charm

  • How to recover photos from a reformatted CF card.

    I accidentally reformatted my 1gb Lexar CF card while still in my camera with some photos I want to recover. I used Lexars Image Rescue program. It said it recovered 200 photos but I can't locate them. The image folder that it says they're in, is empty. I used both a high level search and then a low level search.
    I created a smart folder and selected >computer >kind>image>created>within the last week. It found the photos form my iPhoto Library that I expected, but none of the 200 "recovered" photos. Any advice?

    4th times the charm. I choose a new destination folder and this time they're showing up.

  • When I try to export from LR I get an internal error message :  An internal error has occurred ?:0 attempt to index a nil value

    All of a sudden when I try to export images from LR to my HD...I get the following error
    Unable to Export:
    An internal error has occurred ?:0 atempt to index a nil value.  What does this mean?  How do I fix?

    Hi,
    Same problem here. I am trying to export files from RAW format to JPEG. I am setting the output size to 2000k. I get the error message:
    Attempt to index a nil value
    The behavior is a bit random. If I export a large number of photos, some will work some won't. If I retry a picture that failed, it sometimes works or keeps failing. The input images are fairly similar in sizes.
    In some cases, there is no error message but the new reduced-size image is not created.

    This export operation was working previously (i.e., previous version of LR). I installed the 5.5 version on June 28 2014. The bug is probably in the new version of LR.

              <JMSBridgeDestination
              AdapterJNDIName="eis.jms.WLSConnectionFactoryJNDIXA"
              ConnectionFactoryJNDIName="weblogic.jms.testConnectionFactory"
              ConnectionURL="t3://localhost:7001"
              DestinationJNDIName="examples.queue2" Name="LocalBridge"
              UserName="kyang" UserPassword="{3DES}2LeceOSYOaRuCvrFshnBZg=="/>
              ConnectionFactoryJNDIName="weblogic.jms.ClientConnectionFactory"
              ConnectionURL="t3://localhost:7001"
              DestinationJNDIName="examples.queue1"
              Name="MQWeblogicDestination" UserName="kyang"/>
              <JMSConnectionFactory DefaultDeliveryMode="Persistent"
              DefaultTimeToDeliver="200" DefaultTimeToLive="1000"
              JNDIName="weblogic.jms.ClientConnectionFactory"
              LoadBalancingEnabled="false" MessagesMaximum="100"
              Name="ClientConnectionFactory" OverrunPolicy="KeepNew"
              ServerAffinityEnabled="false" Targets="examplesServer"/>
              <JMSConnectionFactory DefaultDeliveryMode="Non-Persistent"
              DefaultTimeToDeliver="200" DefaultTimeToLive="1000"
              FlowControlEnabled="false"
              JNDIName="weblogic.jms.testConnectionFactory"
              Name="testConnectionFactory" OverrunPolicy="KeepNew" Targets="examplesServer"/>
              <MessagingBridge Name="MyMessaging Bridge" Selector="*"
              SourceDestination="LocalBridge"
              TargetDestination="MQWeblogicDestination" Targets="examplesServer"/>
              I used a test client get InitialContext with url:"t3://localhost:7001" and send
              the message to "examples.queue2" which is "MyJMSQueue".
              From the monitor screen I found the message was put on "MyJMSQueue" but the message
              was nerver delieveried to the "examples.queue1".
              From the log, I got following message:
              <Jun 20, 2002 10:05:53 AM CDT> <Info> <MessagingBridge> <200012> <Bridge "MyMess
              aging Bridge" suceesfully found the two adapters configured for it.>
              Do you have any suggestions?
              Thanks a lot!

    Don't worry about the log messages about
              "comp/env/wls-connector-resref".
              It is not a problem for the Messaging Bridge feature.
              The real problem is that you have an invalid selector for the
              MessagingBridge. A bridge selector has the same syntax as a JMS message
              selector. As you can see from the JMS specification, a message selector
              syntax is based on a subset of the SQL92 conditional expression syntax.
              I would suggest you try the bridge feature without any selection first
              and add the selector later.
