Nikon Raw Images

Good morning...I never had a problem with iPhoto reading Nikon RAW images until now. I just upgraded to the D300s from the D70 and iPhoto cannot import these files. They are still NEF. Not sure what's wrong. Thanks.

The Raw from the D300s is not currently supported.
They are still NEF.
Unfortunately that doesn't matter. The NEFs from a 300s are different from the NEF or a 300 or 70 or 40. Support for each model of camera has to be added individually. Let them know you want it:

  • New install of CS3 won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images

New install of CS3 on my new PC laptop won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images. Same PC product opens them on my older desktop, and CS5 for MAC opens them on my iMAC.
What am I missing? CS3 has been registered and activated. Thank you

    Hi, Again, John,
I followed the instructions to the letter, and nothing worked. I still got the wrong kind of file message. After I tried to use the plug-in, I could no longre open pages in IE or Firefox. I have to wipe my new computer and reinstall everything. This time, I made CS3 the first thing I installed, and followed the instruction again as follows:
    "Windows
    ®
    1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
    5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to anot
her location (for example, a new folder on your
desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, fr
om the download into the same folder as Step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge."
Still unable to open RAW images in PS. I did notice that the two files I copied to the desktop folder were the same, although one was slightly larger than the other. I chose to keep both.
Why is CS3 working on my desktop from the same disk with no plu-in, but not on my new laptop? Is it Windows 8.1 instead of XP? That doesn't make much sense. PLEASE help. This is insane.

  • How will Aperture treat Nikon raw images which have been enhanced using Capture NX2 software?  Some are cropped and "developed" and some have been enhanced using the control point technology.  I have NIK sw as a plug-in in aperture.

How will Aperture treat Nikon raw images which have been enhanced using Capture NX2 software?  Some are cropped and "developed" and some have been enhanced using the control point technology.  I have NIK sw as a plug-in in aperture.

Actually, there is a Nik/Nikon connection — but I am pretty sure it is irrelevant to the OP's question. The connection is that Capture NX2 was written as a joint venture between Nikon and Nik. (The name similarity is a coincidence.)
Capture NX2 is a cool program that incorporates the features of Nik's Viveza and Nikon's Raw processing engine, along with some other powerful image adjustment features. It provides, like Aperture, a losses workflow. Unlike Aperture, the adjustments (Edit Steps in C-NX terminology) are saved in the original NEF file along with the un-altered raw data. Multiple versions can be saved in a single NEF.

  • Nikon RAW image thumbnails can't be see.

When trying to open a file in PS6 (13.0.1 32 & 64) I can't see NEF thumbnails (Nikon D800). Files will open but I need to see thumbnails to be able to selct the image easily. ACR v 7.3.0.71 is installed and I have checked that this is the latest version. I am able to see NEF thumbnail images in Lightroom 4.
Help / advice please as I am new to PS6. Thanks
    Simon

PS is using an operating-system-level function while you’re in File / Open.  You either need to be using an Adobe product such as Bridge that does use ACR to render thumbnails, or you need to update your operating-system with a codec that understands Nikon RAW formats.
You can try the Microsoft Codec Pack:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
Or you can pay for the Fast Image Viewer Codec Pack that understands how to get at the thumbnails of many different image formats, including Adobe PSDs:

  • Development of imported nikon raw images - too strong?

    Hi everybody,
I have what is probably a basic question for Aperture 3, but couldnt help me otherwise.
I am shooting with two Nikon-cameras in RAW-format.
I kept noticing, that when I import my images into aperture, when I select the image for the very first time to view it, the machine keeps "loading" it for approx 1-2 seconds, and then the colours are quite different and also some lines.
So what seems to happen is some kind of interpretation of the RAW-image, probably i am seeing a JPG-preview image from the cam before that?
However, it seems to me that the colours get a little bit too intense, eg faces tend to get a little red quickly
Also, I just noticed that a pillar of a building, which has been quite straigt in preview, seemed to be a little more curvy after this process, so its probably some lense correction or aspheric correction working.
I do want to keep on shooting in RAW, but I have no clue, if there is any way to influence what Aperture does (automatically) with all those pictures, can you help me out?
    thanks!

Check the "Raw Fine Tuning" settings in the adjustment brick.
If "Raw Fine Tuning" is not showing, add it to your default adjustments after selecting one of your raws. Then click the cogwheel and add the adjustment to your default set.
I'd try to adjust the "Boost" and "Hue Boost" sliders.
Once you are happy with the result, click the cogwheel and save the new setting as a camera default preset.
Perhaps the preset that Aperture is using for your camera is using is faulty.

  • My ACR will not recognize Nikon RAW images

I had a friend take our family photos today and she used her Nikon d600 (rather than my Canon 5D MkII--she didn't want to use a camera than she didn't know how to use, understandably!). She gave me her SD card so that I could transfer the images to my computer and then do my own editing, etc. However, her Nikon (NEF) files are not being recognized by my ACR. What do I need to do? Is there a download? An update? A plugin? I'm totally unfamiliar with this problem.  PLEASE HELP!! (I have ACR version 5.7.0.213 and CS4.)

You need at least Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 and only Photoshop CS6 has it.
If upgrading to CS6 or the CC is out of the question, then you will be converting the D600 raws to dng format to open in ACR 5.7

  • Can't locate RAW images in Originals folder

    I shoot in RAW+JPEG.
Well, I uploaded two batches of photos (two separate "Events" in iPhoto) a couple of months ago and am now looking to edit them in Lightroom. In iPhoto, these "Events" show both the JPEG and the Nikon RAW image. Each photo is labeled accordingly in the Information box.
However, when I look in the iPhoto Library packages, these two events do not show up in the "Originals" folder. They only show up in the "Modified" folder, and only as JPEGs! Where have my originals gone??
All of my other RAW images are present in the "Originals" folder. It seems as though only my last two uploads are missing.
    Help!

What you're viewing in iPhoto are jpgs that iPhoto created for viewing the image. You're not looking at the the raw file itself.
To determine if you have any raw files in your library search in spotlight for the extension of your raw files. Like ".cr2" or whatever it is. If you don't get any hits that will indicate that the raw files have been removed from the hard drive.
Are you using a managed or referenced library?
If you're running a reference library is there any chance it could have been a managed library when the raw files were imported. That would explain having the jpg file for viewing and no raw files.
I would also download and use Find Any File to search for the file extension. FAF can search inside packages and areas of the hard drive that spotlight can't.

  • Problem with opening raw image in CS3 extended

I just installed my CS3 Extened on my new Windows 8 Desktop and when I tried to open a Nikon raw image I get an error telling me it's the wrong type.  How do I fix this ?  It was working on my Windows 7 computer.

This just started when I installed the CS 3 Extended on my new Windows 8 computer.  It only affects my ability to open Nikon D90 Raw files. Everything else (standard JPG) works fine. I also have NX Capture 2 from Nikon and it opens the RAW files fine.  I also have Adobe elements 9 and it opens the same RAW files without any problems.
The same problem developed when I installed the CS 3 on my HP laptop last year.  It still will not open raw files.
    Thanks

  • Viewing Cannon Raw images in Bridge

I normally shoot with my Nikon D3, But I recently borrowed a Canon. When viewing my Nikon Raw images in Bridge, I am able to see the Images. But when I try to view the Canon Raw Images, all I see are Icons. Is there a setting that allows me to see the Cannon Raw Images?
    I am using Windows 2000.

You did not include enough info to comment.
What version of Bridge, and what model of Cannon camera?

  • NEF (Raw) images

All of a sudden my PSE 9 will not recognize NEF (Nikon Raw) images for work.  Anyone have a clue why this is happening?
    Always worked before.
    Thanks.

Thanks for this - and an excellent question as it turns out.
Spent time with Nikon and finally found someone in Adove after bouncing all over and on hold a lot.
My issue was complicated as I did not have an issue with the computers at home but we now have the laptop up and going in the RV.  Last time I used the laptop with this camera doing RAW was in January.  But I went from a Nikon 5000 to 5100 in the meantime.  And the laptop was sleeping soundly in it's case this whole time.
So, not updated computer and new camera that was not in it.
Downloaded two updates and doing just fine.
But your point was right on the money and I thank yoiu much for responding.

  • Mavericks pinks nikon raw?

Since upgrading to Mavericks my Nikon RAW images show up in both finder preview and in the preview app as being pink. Does anyone know if I ought to install a plugin or how to get them shown properly in Mavericks? Thanks!

Do you have a trial of a pre-mavericks version of ilife or aperture? If so, Apple gives you the new version for free through the app store.
If not, do you have the original install CD's from your mac? I bet there is a trial of iphoto or aperture on those DVD's, and gain, Apple gives you the new version for free.
That's how I got the camera update and finally Nikon working.
Granted, the KB about Mavericks support for camera's tells the Nikon camera's are supposed to work, but not so in our experience:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5955
You could always turn to Adobe with their
Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw
It is free, and maybe it helps you open your NEF without having to install Apple's apps to get the camera upgrade.
Or to the free Nikon View NX.
    Hope this helps!
All of these solutions are of course not supporting our camera's natively and out of the box as the KB from Apple would suggest, and involve installing additional software. I'm afraid I don't know of a method to get Mavericks support our camera's natively without one of these added softwares.

  • Can't open RAW Nikon files (NEF) using PS3 10.0 running 10.6.8 , think there is a conflict with camera Raw plug-in. Can't open raw images in bridge or photoshop.

I think I may have a Camera Raw plug-in conflict or plug in may be in the wrong place. In both PS3 and Bridge Nikon raw files (NEF) will not open. I've noticed that in photoshop in the pull down menu-about plug-in, I have 2 Camera Raw (s) listed, getting info one is 4.0, the other 4.6.0.30. It appears that my files and .xmp are 4.0 just by searching for 'Camera Raw' either 4. or 4.6 in spotlight. nothing is listed in spotlight under camera raw 4.6, but all my images are listed in the spotlight if I search for camera raw 4.0! I can not open either in Bridge or Photoshop CS3 I just receive the error message 'could not complete this request because photoshop does not reconize this type of file'. any help would this is greatfully appreciated. Thanks

Well if you have a fairly new Nikon camera PS CS3 will not have the proper version of ACR to support that camera.
You could use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the NEF files to DNGs or you can update PS to a newer version that does have support for newer cameras or you could buy Adobe Lightroom V4 which also has support for the newer Nikon cameras.

  • Can't compare Nikon D750 Raw images in version 9.6.1 of iPhoto.

This is in response to Terence Devlin’s last reply for which their was no provision for a direct reply.
I just made an interesting discovery. Here’s the story. I have iPhoto Library Manager and have created many libraries using that program. On a hunch I tried comparing photos in several of the libraries. Selecting two or more photos and then clicking Edit did not work in any case. However, with the single exception noted below, the method I have been using for several years did work. This method is to select two or more photos, then right click on one of the photos and click on Edit in iPhoto in the menu that appears.
So far I am experiencing a problem in comparing only the Raw images I have downloaded from the new Nikon D750 camera that I acquired just last Friday. Per my recent inquiry you advised upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite and from iPhoto v9.5.1 to v9.6.1 in order to be able to download Raw images from my new D750 to iPhoto. Those upgrades went well. However, it appears that there is a bug in version 9.6.1 of iPhoto in regard to its ability to compare Raw images from the Nikon D750. How do I notify Apple of this problem so that they can fix it? In the meantime do you know of a workaround?

How do I notify Apple of this problem so that they can fix it?
Since iPhoto has been dropped by Apple in leu of Photos  there's little hope that they will do any fixing on 9.6.1. However, you can report the bug to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html and hope they'll look into it.

  • How to view the Nikon D4 RAW images in Bridge CS3

I am in the process of buying the lattest Nikon camera the D4. However, I am still using CS3. I am wondering if I am still going to be able to view and process the RAW images in Bridge? Will I need a plug in? If so, where can I download?

I am wondering if I am still going to be able to view and process the RAW images in Bridge?
    No, according to this overview:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
the earliest support for Nikon D4 is ACR 6.7, the latest and last update of the Camera raw plug in that came with PSCS5
Will I need a plug in? If so, where can I download?
You can use the DNG route, meaning downloading the free DNG converter from Adobe and those DNG files will be viewable in CS3 and you can work with them.
    Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?platform=Macintosh&product=106
While it is none of my business I just wonder why you buy a 5K $ state of the art top dSLR from 2012 and still use an 'old' piece of software released in 2007 to try and get the most out of it.
And sadly enough CS3 Bridge is known to be the worst version ever, you sure will benefit from at least CS5 but CS6 offers the new 2012 Process in ACR.
