Nikon RAW issues

So ever since i upgraded to v1.2 lightroom has been doing ugly things to my RAW files. After importing the RAW file, before i even do anything, i can see lightroom desaturate and totally change the color from what my camera took the picture at. For example, when i click on a newly imported RAW file i can see what the original color was while its "loading" the picture, but by the time it fully loads the color is all off and its practically impossible to return it to what it was, and its not just the temperature thats being messed with. any suggestions on how i can tell lightroom to stop pre processing my pictures????

There are dozens of threads on this.
The image you see initially is the embedded preview in the RAW file. It's basically an out-of-camera JPEG. It's shown until LR builds its own preview from its own settings.
If you don't like the LR defaults, you can change them in two ways - you can change the defaults themselves, by camera and by ISO if you like, or you can create a develop preset to apply to the images on import.

  • LIghtRoom color problem vs PhotoShop CS2 on Nikon RAW

I recently bought Adobe Lightroom and I was surprised to notice some huge color differences compared to PhotoShop CS2.
Im using Nikon D80 and shooting RAW. I have calibrated semi-pro monitor.
The same RAW file opens in LightRoom pretty well until you get the rendering preview. Once the preview is done, the picture becomes desaturated in red and blue and has a green cast especially in the shadows with much lower contrast. If I use Edit in PhotoShop option, the picture becomes even worse (even more desaturated and greenish) when opens in PhotoShop. If I open the same RAW in PhotoShop directly (using the NEF plug-in, not CameraRaw!) everything is just fine. The picture looks as opened in Nikon Picture Project or as I saw it when I took the picture.
After doing some research, I think that my problem relates to the way that Adobe Camera RAW, Bridge and LightRoom open a Nikon sRGB 4.0.0.3001 (D80) raw file. However, all the things being equal, PhotoShop CS2 (using the NEF plug-in) renders the same colors as Picture Project does (and what I saw on my camera and in reality). I also noticed that choosing sRGB in Camera Raw bring the things closer to the Picture Project colors but far from identical. Anyways, there is no way to change anything in LightRoom, outer than manually twicking all colors until I think it looks good. Which, I think Is very subjective and is different for every picture.
Right now, my Creative Suite Color Settings is North America General Purpose 2 (synchronized for all CS applications) and no application asks me anything about changing the color profile when opening the file. I shoot (with D80) in raw, Normal camera mode (no saturation / contrast, color profile change). I opened the same file in all mentionned applications (LightRoom, CameraRaw from Bridge, PhotoShop and Picture Project) and save them as .jpeg (same size, dpi, etc.) without changing anything (no camera calibration in ACR or LR; no printer profile in PhotoShop). I sent the .jpegs to my local Costco and printed them on glossy paper. All of them printed the same way that they look on the screen. LR, ACR - desaturated on red&blue, color cast on green and low contrast, while great vivid colors and contrast from PhotoShop and Picture Project. For me it looks pretty much as Adobe applications convert Nikon sRGB into a very unappealing Adobe sRGB (and way different from what I saw in reality). I know this is very subjective; some people may argue that Nikon profile is too reddish and oversaturated. But I find the whole story rather unusual. They all work in the sRGB space and there shouldn't be any differences. I've done lot of testing with color profiles and replacing the Camera Raw plugin file format (common files) with Nicon plugins and vice-versa. But still the same result.
I create a User Profile in LightRoom and I get pretty decent colors now, but when I want to edit the file in PhotoShop (from LightRoom) I get the same green and desaturated version.
    What do you think?

    >Regarding LR, what I'm looking here is a "factory made" solution; something that can give consistent results in the initial conversion (like Nikon plugin for PhotoShop, for e.g.)
The problem with that conversion is that you cannot change it. In lightroom you change the actual conversion parameters, which gives you far more leeway and allows for far better conversions in the end. Currently (this will change with Lightroom 2.0 apparently) the only recourse you have if you prefer Nikon's colors is to shoot jpeg, or run your NEFs through capture and create 16-bit tiffs. This is just the way it is. A hammer gives a different result than a screwdriver.
    >It's hard for me to believe that Adobe has invested so much energy and resources in color profiling but it's unable to get nearly close to the Nikon raw colors.
Nikon's colors are far from colorimetrically correct which you can see in many tests. Here is an example for the D300: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D300/D300IMATEST.HTM It is off in the deep reds, the saturated blues, and the Olive-like colors. Profiling the camera does not help you get close to Nikon's colors, but it will get you closer to the ideal colors. I doubt it has been Adobe's goal to get close to the in-camera rendering with Lightroom upto 1.4. They profile all the cameras and make some value judgments on what is more important. Skin tones vs saturated colors etc just like Nikon does.
Regarding getting close to camera colors, there is a trick that you can do to get close to the camera jpeg that involves the ACR calibration scripts. You do need PS CS3 though.
    >I find rather strange that apparently there is no way to get professional conversion. This is defying the main purpose of Color Profiling, I think.
Why is Nikon's conversion professional and Adobe's not? They are both just interpretations of the sensor data. Adobe's is actually colorimetrically more correct in many cases. Colorimetrically correct often means boring unfortunately. This has to do with the fact that our eyes are not color measurement devices but that we have brains interpreting the data. To get pleasing results, Color Profiling does not help as much as you'd like. My issue with the in-camera or Nikon software approach is that it locks you down creatively to the
creative choices the Nikon folks made. Now, be aware that in the Lightroom 2.0 forum the Adobe folks have hinted at major changes to the rendering engine that will bring colors closer to the vendor rendering. How they will do this is unknown right now.

  • My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module.

My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure, highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X 10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

    Happy New Year!
The Develop panel Tone settings in your Dec 31 screenshot show both the Highlights and Shadows controls set to negative values (-48 and -19). For most images (such as this model shot) they should be set to opposite values (-Highlights and +Shadows). To try and duplicate your issue I used negative values for both of these controls with a similar high contrast image. I noticed that the Shadows control becomes non-linear when both the Highlights and Shadows controls are set to negative values. As I moved the Shadows control from a positive value the Shadows clipping indicator comes ON as expected. Moving the Shadows control to a value caused the clipping indicator to turn OFF and moving it further negative caused it to turn back ON again.
The following screenshots demonstrate the issue with only Highlights & Shadows controls applied as shown.
The Highlights & Shadows controls set just to the threshold of extinguishing the clipping indicators.
Moving the Shadows control toward negative causes the Shadow clipping indicator to come ON (as expected), but at-13 it goes OFF again!
Moving the Shadows control further negative causes the Shadows clipping indicator to come back ON at -33.
This is probably normal behavior for the PV2012 Image Adaptive Tone controls as they were not designed to be used way (- - or ++ Highlights & Shadows). The PV2012 Tone controls all interact with each other, which is why it is suggested to adjust them from the Top down starting with Exposure. For most images using -Highlights and +Shadows of near equal value produces good results.
I still can't duplicate the change in clipping indicators after selecting another image, so it may be unique to certain camera models and/or lighting conditions.
    SUGGESTION
Try one of the image files that exhibits this issue using the following PV2102 Tone control adjustment procedure:
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast
If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.
If the issue persists I suggest Exporting an image to DNG file format with the settings that exhibit the issue and post it to Dropbox or other file download site.

  • Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page!

Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page! Yes there are distinct visual changes when I preview my Nikon NEF RAW Files. Please note I do not use iPhoto at all.
If you view it as a contact sheet straight from the original folder there are no alterations but the moment you double click and want to 'Preview' it, this new preview page introduces very noticeable distortions : lighter shading goes missing and colour goes darker e.g orange turns red and mid blue goes deep blue!  Alarmingly the little column on the left of the preview page showing the collection shows the original file colours and then after a few seconds show the new distorted image...you can see this visible change and it takes place after a few seconds once you double click! Also if you use Apple's 'Cover Flow' to preview, this function will replace your original RAW file with the new 'altered preview' image!
I have raised this with Apple but they have yet to reply...has anyone ever experienced this? I have used my Mac book for 18months only noticed it about 5 days ago!
I went to Apple store and we tried it in other laptops and Macs and it happened to all of them so we think this is a software issue and not down to the laptop.
    Any help is much appreciated!

  • Help Cannot Read any of my NEF (Nikon RAW) with iPhoto '08

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and also to an Intel-based iMac (24in 2.8Ghz).
But now I cannot import, view or manipulate any of my old NEF (Nikon RAW format) pictures. Strangely, I also cannot view them in my Aperture. Previously, using PowerPC Mac, I had no problems viewing both.
Is this a compatibility issue with the Intel-based Macs? Is it an issue with the latest version of iPhoto?
Is this something I can solve, or will I need to convert all my NEF files to JPEG using Nikon software? Which I'd really rather not do since I have a vast number of them.
    Thank you so much.

    Joseph
RAW support is a function of the OS rather than iPhoto or Aperture. I would download and re-apply the 10.4.10 update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads.
Dont forget to repair permissions after.

    >I expected that a raw file shows up the same in every raw-converter.
Your expectation is wrong. Every RAW converter will give you a different interpretation of the data. There is no single accepted way of interpreting RAW.
    >shouldn't that be so?
Not really. I think what makes RAW so interesting is that you are not tied to the camera maker's interpretation of the data. This gives one far more versatility to get to your desired result. Of course, if you prefer the camera maker's interpretation, youu can use their software to develop the RAW or you can use the beta profiles in ACR/Lightroom and get
close to identical rendering. I don't know if Adobe released any beta camera profiles for the D700 yet though.

  • New install of CS3 won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images

New install of CS3 on my new PC laptop won't open NEF (Nikon RAW) images. Same PC product opens them on my older desktop, and CS5 for MAC opens them on my iMAC.

    Hi, Again, John,
I followed the instructions to the letter, and nothing worked. I still got the wrong kind of file message. After I tried to use the plug-in, I could no longre open pages in IE or Firefox. I have to wipe my new computer and reinstall everything. This time, I made CS3 the first thing I installed, and followed the instruction again as follows:
    "Windows
    ®
    1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
    5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to anot
her location (for example, a new folder on your
desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, fr
om the download into the same folder as Step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge."
Still unable to open RAW images in PS. I did notice that the two files I copied to the desktop folder were the same, although one was slightly larger than the other. I chose to keep both.
Why is CS3 working on my desktop from the same disk with no plu-in, but not on my new laptop? Is it Windows 8.1 instead of XP? That doesn't make much sense. PLEASE help. This is insane.

  • Writing metadata to Nikon raw

    Given the
recent statement by Nikon and Adobe and the provision of a mini SDK, does this allow the possibility to write metadata from Bridge to Nikon raw files? If so, I'd be enthusiastic to see it implemented.

Then why does anyone buy Nikon Capture or use programs like iView to write metadata to raw files? Granted, anyone with any sense also ensures they have a pristine backup.
Clearly it would be a risk for Adobe to do it blind (iView use the full SDK) but if the mini SDK doesn't allow the possibility of writing metadata, its desirability seems pretty moot.

When trying to open a file in PS6 (13.0.1 32 & 64) I can't see NEF thumbnails (Nikon D800). Files will open but I need to see thumbnails to be able to selct the image easily. ACR v 7.3.0.71 is installed and I have checked that this is the latest version. I am able to see NEF thumbnail images in Lightroom 4.
Help / advice please as I am new to PS6. Thanks
    Simon

PS is using an operating-system-level function while you’re in File / Open.  You either need to be using an Adobe product such as Bridge that does use ACR to render thumbnails, or you need to update your operating-system with a codec that understands Nikon RAW formats.
You can try the Microsoft Codec Pack:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
Or you can pay for the Fast Image Viewer Codec Pack that understands how to get at the thumbnails of many different image formats, including Adobe PSDs:

i cannot open nikon raw files from my 3200 in elements 8

    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
You would need PSE11 since the 3200 requires ACR version 7.1
Only PSE11 can have 7.1, so to be able to use your raw files with PSE9 you should download the free Adobe DNGconverter which can batch convert a whole folder of raw files into the Adobe raw DNG format which your PSE8 can open.

    Hi,
I'm running Aperture 3.1.1. The problem is that it will not display Nikon RAW (NRW) files from the Coolpix P7000.
Recently, a compatibility update was published for the Coolpix P7000 and other cameras. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1339?viewlocale=en_US
When I load the update however, the installer tells me that "this update is only for Iphoto 11 and Aperture 3" which is a bit odd , since I have Aperture 3 ?!
    Can anyone help please ?

Do you have Aperture installed in the Applications folder as Aperture (not Aperture3 or anything like that)?

  • Color Difference - Camera Raw & Nikon Raw NEF

    Hello everybody
When i open a Nikon Raw file in Camera Raw (Photosop CC) I notice a distinct color-difference between the integrated preview image in the Raw file and the camera Raw standard.
I want to start with the exact same color how it came from the camera.
Refers to Nikon D300 or D800 in Raw / Nef format.
left, from Camera Raw 8.4.1 "Camera Raw Standard"
right, integrated preview from the original raw-file
Mostly i have the difference in Blue, it's too much cyan in there an looks not "natural"!
    thanks for help

The third icon in from the right (looks like a camera) called camera calibrations is where the presets live that supposedly match that of your camera.
Even though you use those presets, you are not done. To match what you see in your camera, you must manually adjust the sliders under the basic tab until it does match.
What you see in your camera is a processed image, which is applied to a jpg only. The raw file is just that raw, no processing is done to it. Think of it as a negative. It is your permanent record of the image. Camera raw is then used to manually set up the image to your personal liking. Which does a better job the camera or yourself, is dependent on your skills. You can get details out of that raw file that the camera can not.
When you find you are placing the sliders in certain location more than once, then it is time to create a preset in camera raw that stores those settings. The more you use camera raw, more you can see when your own preset can be used (even as a starting point) and when it is time to do everything manually.
So in other words it is going to take time to 1)get a keen eye 2)understand the subtle differences in what each setting does and 3) collect a library of presets that you can use time and again.
