Nikon support frustration

I've been using Camera Raw for about a year now. I learned fairly quickly that ACR's default rendition of my Nikon raw files was quite wide of the mark in terms of hue and saturation calibration, and this seemed to be a common phenomenon (judging by my research).
I set about learning how to best use ACR (countless websites, discussions and two Adobe books, including the Real World book everyone goes on about). I bought a Munsell ColorChecker and downloaded the Fors, Rags and Tindemans scripts - which seem to produce a different result every time, despite my careful preparation.
I asked in the Nikonians forums about this problem, but most of them seem to have given up on Camera Raw, and instead use the rather terrible Nikon CaptureNX program, which gives a more accurate (although slightly over-cooked) default rendition, supports all the proprietary Nikon metadata, but runs like a dog on a Pentium 4. Many Nikon users don't seem to understand that their 'Picture Controls' have no effect on raw data, and are only used to direct the raw conversion process, and coupled with the poor default color calibration, this causes many of them to drop ACR like a hot brick almost straight away.
I've just bought a D300. Annoyingly I discover that even more Nikon metadata are responsible for features I cannot use in ACR (Automatic Chromatic Aberration Correction being one of them).
I love using Adobe software. It's fast, it's ingenious, it's fab. So, I hate to see Abobe drive away photographers (I can only speak for Nikon users) to an inferior product, when a few tweaks and additions will win them over. Fixing Nikon reds would be a good start - they are almost always far too desaturated and orange. Maybe a selection of presets would help.
I may be overstretching to suggest that Adobe attempts to support more Nikon metadata. I don't know how much cooperation there is between Adobe and Nikon, but, even if there is very little, it can't be rocket science to decode the Picture Controls and correction data, unless Nikon REALLY don't want other people reading it. Maybe get some bored script kiddies on the job - they'll have it sussed in no time ;-)
Anyway, I hope Adobe keeps up the good job with Camera Raw, which is an excellent product, but could be even better with minimum effort.

Considering Adobe is very much a media company I wish they would start doing
podcast like videos on their products. I know there are some (not from
Adobe) on Lightroom and Photoshop, but one on ACR and others that had some
really useful information on workflow and how-to's would be nice.
Otherwise, my suggestion is look to books. There are a lot of books on ACR
from companies like Peach Pit Press, O'Reilly, and others. Most are quite
good. I would go to a book store and browse them to find the one with the
format you like.
Also, download and install Apple iTunes. Even if you don't have an iPod,
iPhone or AppleTV unit you can still subscribe to the free podcasts and view
them on your computer. Photoshop User TV is a good choice for not only the
occasional ACR stuff but for Photoshop as well. You just need to get past
the antics of the three hosts. Antics that I might add get old really fast.
But, the tutorials are very nice. Layers TV is another one that is worth
checking out. They cover nearly everything Adobe.

  • Indesign XML support frustration, my worst customer experience ever

    Hi,
I have opened a paid for incident with Adobe, case #  182 433 774 , and am completely frustrated. I have spent 3 hours on the phone talking to people that have NO grasp on the english language, and no technical expertise. They say they don't know XML, but can help me. Days have gone by, and they claim that my problem has been escallated, yet they don't even have the details of the problem. This is clearly the worst tech support that I have ever encountered, even though we are talking about a $2,000 product. Isn't there any better tech support that I can buy?
Does anyone know what support options I have to resolve and XML issue?  We are only able to render the first page of our XML driven catalog, then the job seems to complete without any complaint. We are using Indesign 5.0.

Well, you could ask your question here! I hate XML but I can probably help you.

  • Canon CRW Raw files not supported in Preview, Nikon supported

With Panther and Jaguar, Canon RAW files in crw format were supported in Preview. In Tiger, these files are not. Also, when importing these files from camera or CF reader, canon raw files tagged with .thm! What is this? an 8 kb "document" that renders file corrupt. Did not happen in Panther or Jaguar. And the problem is NOT my camera because it works fine on Windows PC and on previous OS mac.
here's the kicker: Nikon NEF raw format is NOW supported by Preview, but was NOT supported in Panther and Jaguar.
So, I called AppleCare and they say NO raw formats should be supported by Preview.
Another example of how Apple has lost compatibility and quality control?
Anyone else who uses RAW files in photography have same experience?
    Thanks.
    Michael.

The easiest way to edit plist files is with Property List Editor, which you get installed if you install the Developer stuff that comes with your OS install disks. If you don't want to add all that stuff your computer, it is possible to edit with a a straight text editing program in plain text. Personally I find that too confusing. I put a copy of my edited Raw.plist file up:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/Raw.plist.zip
It has the substitution of the S50 for the original S60. It also lists the S70, so your Canon S70 should be working. If it isn't working either, then this hack won't help you. Download and unzip the file.
Because of permissions--you aren't supposed to be mucking about in this area--the easiest way to proceed is using the Terminal. The path is, unfortunately, extremely long. You open the System folder, then the Library folder, then Frameworks, ApplicationServices.framework, then Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources. You should now see a list of files that includes the Raw.plist file. Leave that Finder window open.
Launch Terminal from your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you have never used it, nor ever used a sudo command you will get a friendly warning when you issue the first command. We want to make sure that the original file doesn't get lost. So type:
    sudo mv
and a space, then drag the Raw.plist file into the Terminal and drop it. The Terminal will helpfully fill in the path. Add a space, then copy the path up to the file name and paste, then type RawOld.plist as the new file name and hit the Return key. You'll need to type your password, which is NOT echoed to the screen, so type carefully and hit the return key again.
Next you want to add the modified Raw.plist file to the folder. Using a sudo copy command will insure that it belongs to system. So type
    sudo cp
add a space and drag the new Raw.plist file into the Terminal window. Paste in the path to the folder (it should still be on the clipboard) hit return, give your password and hit return again. I don't remember whether it was necessary to restart the Finder or not. You might want to do a restart and then Repair Permissions, just to be on the safe side.

  • Nikon Support for raw

I have a Nikon D 50 and and confused as to whether I can open raw files with Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac. On the list of cameras supported there's an asterisk for Nikon. Do I need to buy the Nikon software for raw to open in PE?
Here's the note for Nikon in the camera's supported list:
*The file encryption found in some Nikon raw formats has caused some users to question the level of cooperation between Nikon and Adobe in providing solutions for raw processing. Get more information about Nikon's and Adobe's joint commitment to our common customer needs.

    I have Mac 4.0 and a Nikon D200.
NIKON RAW support is fantastic for this very inexpensive program. They give you a terrific plug-in to pull in the files and make adjustments, then convert to .jpg for editing. Please note that is the way it works; you open the file first with the plug-in and do your preliminary adjustments (white balance for example) then open in PS to fine tune and enhance.
iPhoto doesn't support the D200 yet so this helped a lot.

  • Nikon Df RAW support?

I just purchased a new Nikon Df. I quickly discovered that Lightroom 5.2 doesn't recognize my files. I don't understand. Isn't it a D4 sensor? What should I do. I always shoot in RAW.

    Hi David,
I'm in exactly the same boat as you, it seems.  I upgraded to Nikon Df (from D90); and purchased Lightroom explicitly to manage the better photos I'm taking with the Df.  I'm astounded that Lightroom won't even import the files from the camera or the flash drive, or recognize them (or the jpegs) after manually transfering them to the library.
Regarding the explanations here (generally that Adobe has to "reverse engineer" compatibility after the camera is released), all of this might be a truism but it reflects a failure of Adobe to have a business relationship with Nikon.  This is *software*, it can/should be licensed.  Apparently [to me], either Adobe or Nikon [or both] are unwilling to license it for business reasons that I'm sure we will never know.  This is simply what modern software companies do if they claim to "support" 3rd party hardware and/or file formats.  "Reverse engineering" this kind of compatibility just doesn't seem likely to ever produce a good software product.
Even more interesting, while poking around Adobe's support site, I ran across this incredibly interesting footnote [yes I'm the kind of person that reads footnotes] about Nikon RAW support on http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.html which reads:
    * The file encryption found in some Nikon raw formats has caused some users to question the level of cooperation between Nikon and Adobe in providing solutions for raw processing. Get more information about Nikon and Adobe's joint commitment to the common needs of customers.
The target of the "Get more information" link is an interesting read if you're a PR professional or an attorney.  They should just come out and say that Nikon support is "limited" or "minimal" or something to that effect.  Perhaps "slipshod, cheap, and half-***" would be more forthright; but this would never get past the VPs at either company.  Ha.
Meanwhile, a couple questions on the Nikon side:
Do we know if View NX supports these files?  The Nikon site at https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18710/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzg2NTA 2NjU2L3NpZC9QZjJGR2lIbA%3D%3D says that the latest version added support for D5300 and Df.
There is a Nikon NEF codec at http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/.  Do we know if this has any effect on LR compatibility?
I'll certainly subscribe to this post to see what others know, and look for LR updates; but I'm not very optimistic.

  • Adobe Camera Raw 8.6 issue with Nikon D810 files

Just installed ACR 8.6 with D810 support.
A huge amount of moire is introduced when selecting the following profiles: camera standard, camera landscape, camera vivid, and camera monochrome.
All other profiles (adobe standard, camera neutral, camera flat, and camera portrait) seem ok.
The problem exists in Photoshop (via ACR) and in Lightroom 5.6. Please note that Nikon Capture NX-D doesn't have this issue.
Example: Check the upper portion of the following image:

I have experienced the same, although having never owned a camera without the olpf, I did not realize that what I was seeing was moire -- I was calling it "color banding" as if shooting with a low bit rate or very small color gamut.
I think the same issue is referred to in the following post: http://www.dslrbodies.com/accessories/software-for-nikon-dslrs/software-news/acr-86-and-li ghtroom-56.html but he is vague as to just what the "issue" is.
I noticed this issue not only with acr, but on the back of the lcd of the 810 itself.  Wondering if I was doing something wrong in terms of settings or if it was a bad copy of the d810, I contacted nikon support. They were not helpful and told me to return the unit for repair.   I saw this to a great degree on the lcd, to a small degree even in the raw images processed via Capture NX-D and to some extent via acr 8.6 as you say, when using he following profiles: camera standard, camera landscape, camera vivid, and camera monochrome.  Since I was not able to convince myself tat it was not an issue with the camera itself, I returned the d810, so I was not stuck with a problematic unit or having to wait for a repair.  Now of course I just have to wait for a replacement unit!!
Again, I am curious as to the extent others are seeing this problem.  I am seeing nothing but superlatives posted by others.  I am hoping that this is some raw processing issue and a bad lcd screen on my original d810, but it seems too big of a coincidence.  If it is a matter of Adobe racing to keep up with the new profiles ok, but if this is the extent that I am going to see moire on a camera of this price then it is not worth the upgrade.
    What are others experiencing?

  • NIKON D5000 NEF - Lightroom 2.6 and PSE show colors quite differently from what Nikon Software show

With my Nikon D5000 DSLR camera, I took recently photos from small blue flowers. I had set-up my Nikon D5000 to create for every photo both a NEF File and a JPEG File (and had set my camera to use Automatic While Balance).
I noticed that for NEF Files Lightroom 2.6 (and also PSE 7, that uses internally Camera RAW ) shows me the blue colors of the flowers quite differently from what I see with PSE for the jpeg file. It is my impression, that it is in the Jpeg files, that the blue color is close to the reality; and  that it is with the NEF Files that Lightroom and PSE show a blue color that is quite different from the reality.
I also looked at the photo files with the NIKON "View Nx" 1.3.0 Software that came with my camera. With "View Nx" the blue colors (both with the NEF file and the Jpeg File) are very vlose that what i see with PSE 7 in the jpeg file (and quite different from what I see with LR and PSE for the .NEF File).
I mentioned this problem to Nikon Support. They suggested, that Nikon Software and Adobe software use different algorithms; and that the Nikon algorithms are better/closer adapted to the Nikon cameras than the more generalized Adobe algorithms that need to support a very large number of cameras.
But ....it is Lightroom that i wish to use to process my NEF Files and PSE that I wish to use to organize my Photos. Can a LR/Camera-RAW expert help me? I would like to find a solution to see with LR and with PSE in my D5000 NEF Photo Files blue colors that are close to the reality and close to what Nikon Software shows me on my PC. Please notice that I am very far away from being a professional and that i will probably not understand complicated explanations.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
An additional note, that is perhaps not relevant: I used LR to convert my NEF File into a JPEG File format and looked at the blue in the result. It looks the same as what LR and PSE show me for the .NEF File (and looks different from the jpeg file crreated by the NIKON camera).

    EJ and Jim
Thank You very much for your useful feedback.
I realize, that as a neophit I am an exot among the community of photo-experts and photo-professionals addressed by LR.  Therefore the wish that I will now express is perhaps inadequate. But since it is gently, that i express this wish, I am probably allowed to do so......
My wish for a future version of LR, is that LR comes out of the box with a "reasonable" interpretation of the RAW images of most important/widespread modern cameras....without requiring that non-experts like me gets confronted from the very beginning with the need to develop their own default settings.
For this wish, I will formulate a Feature Request.
You might wonder, why a non-expert like me is interested in LR instead of  using those Photo-Editing Software (e.g. PSE) that are supposed to address the need of non-experts. Well..... I am coming from the PSE world. I am reasolnably happy with the PSE Organizer....but  I hate the complex, inefficient, unfriendli "user-interface" (experts will probably tell: workflow-interface?) of the PSE Editor. Its really a last-century Software. LR is so much more friendly, even for non-experts...within the Library Module, i do not need to switch back and forth between one dialogue-window for each type of change.... nearly all what i need is in that one right-hand pane of the Library module.
I honestly believe, that Adobe should take a serious look at promoting/marketing  LR also to the audience of non-experts. That would be a good and attractive additional marketing opportunity for LR.

  • Camera RAW unable to read Nikon NEF files from D3X

I have just purchased a Nikon D3X and unable to open the Nikon NEF files with Photoshop
    Mac OSX10.4 Photoshop CS4
I contacted Nikon support & was advised to instal ACR 5.2
downloaded the update Camera RAW v5.2 and installed as instructed after removing old plug in & clearing cache. Still wont open NEF files
I note on the Nikon website that the cameras supported by Camera RAW include D3 but not D3X

    >Mac OSX10.4
Make certain that is OS 10.4.11.
    >contacted Nikon support & was advised to install ACR 5.2
    Some support!
As Jao said, you need ACR 5.3.

  • Nikon D810 - RAW

I am using a Nikon D810 and on my Computer imac and macbook I am on the latest Yosemite Version (all updates done). The D810 has is on Firmware C 1.02.
All ühotographs shoot in RAW (NEF), can not be opened with any software (apart from Capture NX-D) and when using programs like ACDSee Mac Pro the system permanently crashes.
Will there be an update to work with this version of NEF? According to Nikons Support Site only RAW L is working - however there is no choice of RAW L or any other RAW. It's RAW/NEF or not.
Hope Apple will react soon... because all other companies involved (Nikon, ACD etc.) tell me, that Apple has to include the correct "RAW-engine" for the new Nikon D810.

No.  Lightroom 4.4.1 is the last and did not contain support for the D810.  You can upgrade to version 5.6 (paid) or you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter and convert your D810 NEF to DNG where they can be read in older versions of Lightroom.

  • Nikon D800e disconnects from tethered connection

    Using LR 4.4, MacbookPro 10.9.1
Not a cable issue. Have similar disconnection problems w/Nikon CC2, CaptureOne Pro.

In my case it's not a cable issue.. and surely not a port issue.. everything works perfect as soon as I reboot into Windows.. it's only with the OSX OS I experience these problems?
I have talked to the Apple support and they have not heard anything about this.. neihter has the Nikon support guys..
So i guess the only way forward is to reinstall the OSX from scratch and start testing with new software installations.. and check if this is caused bu some particular os update or software installation or something similiar??
The only issue here is that it will take forever to do this!!!
The energy saver commet could be something I will look into that before a reinstallation.. I really don't want to reinstallt everything!
I will try with a powered hub too.. that sound reasonable... so some tries before reinstalling..
    Thanks for the suggestions..

  • Is 1080psf export possible from Premiere or AME?

I'm exporting individual clips of EX-1 XDcam from a sequence, one clip at a time so I can also apply some level correction to the export. It is 23.967 psf at origin from the camera. I am exporting to ProRes HQ 23.967 1080p as reported by Premiere Pro 5.5.1. The time line is AJA 23.98 1080psf. The problem is that the exports are turning out to be true 1080p, not psf as the original. I'm using the clips in another program that does not create a 1080p timeline, Media 100 Suite 2.1 (latest version, came with the AJA 1080 LHi OEM board I'm using). Bottom line, is there a way to get  Premiere or AME to export a true 1080psf ProRes file? Psf is preferred in many applications. I don't see any mode select for psf, even though I am in a 1080psf timeline.

The project is already started in Media 100 Suite 2.1. It must have been a long time since you've used Media 100. Other than the fact that it won't playback until media is converted to ProRes, I prefer the simple, quick interface to any other. But the biggest reason is stability on the Mac. Media 100 Suite 2.1 is solid as a rock. I have a new Mac Pro with GTX 285 NVidia Card 24 Gb RAM, fast RAID, and I still find unexpected crashes in 5.5.1. That and the fact that 5.5.1 broke Nikon D7000 support, the main reason I wanted to get into Premiere in the first place. There is a lot of D7000 footage in this project, so I am going back and forth between 5.0.4 (which supports it) and 5.5.1 (which doesn't).  But these things are not why I posted. Just wanted to find out why Premiere is taking 1080psf footage from my EX-1 on a 1080psf AJA timeline and exporting it as 1080p. It is giving me problems that I wouldn't have if it stayed in psf. Is there any way to over-ride this behavior and get 23.98 psf out? I see settings in interpret footage. Saw an article in Pro Video Coalition that extolled the fact that it automatically interprets psf as p in 5.5.1. Does this mean I should be doing my exports in 5.0.4 to get more control over interpretation, or is there an interpretation setting I can change in 5.5.1?
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy using Premiere, I love the fact that you don't have to convert to get playback of my EX-1 footage, even though my D7000 doesn't work presently. I intend to use it for all of my titling and color correction. Maybe I'll give the next project when I am not under a lot of time pressure to Premiere. Hopefully they fix Nikon support before I have to pay a third time for 6.0. Media 100 will take the 1080p on the timeline, it just won't playback in the source window on my external monitors when the project setting is psf, and all timelines at 23.98 1080 are psf. I really don't want to edit a 30 minute documentary without source window playback.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

  • How to open 12-bit RAW files

I have Adobe Master Collection CS6.
After a recent photography trip I accidentally downloaded raw images from my Nikon D600 to a computer that had an older 32-bit version of Nikon View NX2.  All of the files came across as 12-bit RAW lossless compressed instead of 14-bit RAW lossless compressed.  Photoshop will not open any of these files.
I contacted Nikon support first (twice), but they couldn’t/wouldn’t offer any suggestion on how I might be able to open these files for post-processing.  Do you have any suggestions that might help me?

    Hi,
Did you already erase the images from the card?
    (format the card)
For some reason older versions of nikon view when used with more recent nikon
cameras corrupt the images in such a way that adobe camera raw won't open them.
If you don't have access to the images on the card anymore, i.e. you already formatted
the card, you might try this to fix the nefs so adobe camera raw will open them:

  • System corruption with SL and Capture NX

Five days ago, I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I was very pleased with the results. Then on Monday evening I installed the latest version of Nikon's Capture NX, which is now SL-compatible, and went to bed after checking that it could open photos OK, leaving NX open.
Next morning, as soon as I tried using any app, I got the spinning wheel, so I force-quit a couple of apps, but then I couldn't shut down or get anywhere, so I had to power off, and on repowering, the system refused to start. Disc Utility reported that it was unable to verify or repair the disc, failing while trying to rebuild the Catalog B-tree, but I couldn't even erase the disc as it wouldn't mount.
Fortunately, my local Apple Repair Centre is just up the road, and they managed to erase the disc and reload Snow Leopard. I then restored from my latest Time Machine backup, but then the system wouldn't start (grey screen), so this time I restored from immediately before the installation of SL, and now everything is fine - except that I'm frightened to install SL or the new NX again.
How does something like this happen with a fundamentally secure OS? Fingers point to Capture NX as the guilty party, but can an app cause this damage, or is it more likely to be a problem in SL - or something else?

    Hello.
    I have also SL 10.6.2 and Capture NX2.2.4. iMac 24", 3.06 Mhz, 8Go.
NX2 crashes very often or blocks with spinning wheel, when working on a picture while there is no other opened application.
I have no problem during the development step of NEF files, the problem happens when applying multiple steps of corrections on the file.
Sometimes, NX2 quits during the work, sometimes, it refuses the saving of the modified file and is blocked. The file is lost.
Waiting for an answer from Nikon support.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 redemption code invalid

I've asked several times but cannot obtain any responses.   I do not fully understand how this works I guess.    The redemption code on my PSE 12 sleeve does not work.   I double checked the code and what I typed and they are the same.    The error message says that I need to return to the retailer.   What information do they need to give me a valid redemption code?   Isn't there a way for me to contact Adobe and provide the information so I can install PSE12 now?   I find this bazaar maze of support without obtaining any support frustrating.    All I want to do is install PSE12.   It should not be so difficult that I spend hours doing it and then spend more hours trying to figure out how I contact Adobe support so I can install a one disk software program.    If anyone has any idea how to install the software, please let me know.    Thanks!
