Nikon tethering working OK?

All,
I have to shoot tomorrow with a Nikon D200 or D300 tethered to either my Lenovo running Lightroom or a friend's MacBookPro also running LR (don't know which version.) Need to tether for teaching a bunch of students about lighting.
I tether back at home with my Canon dSLRs, so I am pretty used to the general process but of course have never done it in the Nikon orbit. With Canons we have the EOS Utility which works reliably. I don't tether directly into LR with the Canon bodies as the process has a flaky reputation. Anyone with recent experience with this body and LR? If we use my computer it will be LR 3.5.
I assume it's a "watched folder" process, even in v3 LR....
All suggestions greatfully received.

Although LR3.5 was an improvement, some people still had tethering issues. LR3.6RC appears to have solved the problems, so you might want to use it instead of LR3.5.
For a discussion that is more Nikon-centric, see this one:
Lightroom: Tethering Bug: OSX 10.6.8 + LR 3.4.1 [Nikon]
Also, the process is not like a watched folder or auto-import. Tethered capture imports files directly into a folder that you specify when you start tethered capture.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Tethering working on MacPro but NOT Macbook Pro

Having a problem with tethering when using it with my laptop. Macbook Pro (6.1), Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1.
My MacPro is working without any problem. (Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1)
I have tried both my cameras Canon 5Dmk2 and Canon 20D. Both cameras are recognized in both Macbook Pro and MacPro but only on the MacPro the images will show up. In my Macbook Pro I can press capture and both cameras react but then nothing happens.
Strange it works on one computer but not the other one.
    Any suggestions?

You're right it is strange. As it works on one system and not the other with the exact same camera and cable and the fact that you hear the shutter go off even on the system where the images don't show up would seem to indicate some difference in the configuration of Aperture on the MBP.
Do the images ever show up? If you go to the Photos icon and search you're complete library do they appear anywhere? There isn't a filter set on the project your importing into by any chance?
I would make a new empty library and try using that to see if it makes any difference. You could also move the com.apple.Aperture.plist file from your Library/Preferences folder to the desktop, restart Aperture and see if that makes any difference.

  • Will tethering work without tethering "option"?

Will tethering on iPhone 4 work without the more expensive tethering "option" from AT&T?
Isn't it just a cable from the phone to your iMac that does the trick?
I don't have an iPhone yet, just wondering...
    Thanks.

Tethering is a carrier feature and the option to tether will only appear in settings if your carrier supports tethering. Carriers charge for the use of this feature & yes, AT&T charges accordingly. You can tether either by bluetooth or USB cable. So no, its not a simple matter of connecting a cable. You first have to sign up for tethering.

  • If I upgrade to Lightroom 5, will my raw images from NIkon D800 work?

I have Lightroom 3 and want to import my NEF (Nikon RAW) files (D700 & 800) and it says not supported.  If I upgrade to the newest version, will it work?

Best not to go spreading those rumours. No-one with any credibility believes them.

  • Bluetooth tethering works but "create network" doesn't?

    Hi,
I use a Verizon Blackberry Storm tethered via Bluetooth for internet access with my MacBook. It works very well. I want to use that connection to create a local network so my wife and kids can use it for internet access when we're on vacation. Last summer, when I had a USB cellular modem, that worked very well. I clicked on the Airport icon, clicked on "Create Network", named the network, and a minute later they were able to find it and use the internet. When I do the same thing now everyone can see the network and join it but they get no internet access. I have internet sharing turned on. I suspect the network isn't acting as a DHCP router so the remote connections don't have valid IP addresses. But I don't know much about these things. I'm puzzled why the system worked with a USB modem but not with a Bluetooth connection. All suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Marc

Yes, the debug SWF works fine. When I run the release SWF, I just see the part of my application which shows while my XML files are supposed to be loading. Loading never actually happens so my application stays in the state which says "Loading configuration" or whatever I show there.

  • Raw (NEF) files from Nikon D7100 - Work on Elements 10

Has a update or patch been made for using raw (NEF) files from Nikon's D7100 camera?

Photoshop Elements 10 does support Adobe Camera Raw 6.4.1 to 6.7 and minimum requirement for Nikon D7100 is ACR 7.4.

  • My Nikon D300 Works Fine --

Although I have used Lightroom since Beta 3, Aperture 2.0 seemed to offer some interesting links to a number of Apple applications. The only problem was the amount of information here which seemed to indicate the D300 wasn't supported by Aperture 2.0. Before I plunked down $200 I wanted to beat on the program to make my own comparison with my tried and true Lightroom. I talked with Apple's tech support and was assured my D300 was compatible with Aperture 2.0. Well, they are right! I uploaded a shoot from yesterday and had no problem -- except my own learning process with Aperture. Apple told me the D300 works only with Leopard 10.5.2 and the new graphics patch that comes after the Big Update. Unfortunately, it appears there will be no support for Ap 2.0 under Tiger. I'm currently using Leopard very tentatively on a separate hard drive on the MacPro. Until I feel Leopard is solid enough, I'll continue to do the majority of my photography work on Tiger -- Let's see what Aperture does for the process.

Yes, Complete Newbie, I too read that support post and it was Not my intention to start a debate over this issue. I was simply reporting the information I got from Apple - right or wrong - and my own experience using Leopard with both of the current updates. There have been numerous posts here by people who have had problems with both the D3 and D300 not rendering images under Aperture 2.0. Apparently your experience with either of these cameras has been successful - Lucky us. Were you able to accomplish this using Tiger? As I said from the outset, I wanted to use Aperture 2.0 along side Lightroom to give me a real life comparison before (or if) I bit the bullet. Given the posts indicating problems with the D300, I didn't want to install the trial version (under my Leopard drive) only to find I couldn't use it with my primary camera.

  • Lightroom 4.4 Tethering does not work with Nikon D7100

A week ago i bought my new Nikon D7100. Yesterday i wanted to try the thetering of Lightroom 4.4.
It worked with my Nikon D5100 but it does not work with the new camera.
Is it a problem with my camera or with Lightroom?
Another question does tethering work with Lightroom 5?

    ...And Google says:
    Tethered camera support in Lightroom

  • Unreliable, mainly non-existent tether with Nikon D800 (current firmware) to LR5.4 running on Macbook OS X 10.7.5. Tried all steps in LR help, plus using different Macbook.  tethering tethered

I recently upgraded my camera from Nikon D700 to D800. For two weeks tethering to LR 5.3 worked impeccably.  The day before a major shoot I upgraded to newly released 5.4 which promised tether support for my backup camera, Nikon D 610, although 5.4 still does not seem to recognise the 610!
For the first two days of this commercial shoot tethering to D800 also worked perfectly, then started to get intermittent, and Macbook gave message that USB drawing too much power and device needed to be removed (I've external drive and camera in the two USB sockets.) Then after that it only worked sporadically for a few frames. It sees contents of camera disk, but tether is sometimes there, then vanishes.
The remaining three days of my shoot were a major headache, with me spending every evening working through LR Troubleshooting page - tried the entire page. Introduced a powered USB 3 hub, different USB cables, different Macbook…everything!
Tethering works with Mac's Image Capture, and like a dream with a trial version of Capture One.
Apple Genius Bar and they checked it out – it did the same for them, and all they could conclude was that the issue is  down to LR. They connected the camera to Aperture on their own Macbook and it tethered flawlessly.  I’ve had to instal this to do my tethered capture whilst this issue persists.  Anyone else had this issue and how did they overcome it?

Ugh. Apparently "messing with it" is still the answer. I decided to try the LinkSys router I was using before I bought the Time Capsule, and my iPhone connected with no problem.
I went through the steps again, and after rebooting my Time Capsule this time, I can connect again. The troubling thing it that this started with a power-off of my iPhone. No changes or installations, just a reset. Am I going to have to reboot my Time Capsule (which has no power switch, just a cord I have to unplug) every time I reboot my iPhone?
    Jinkies.

  • Aperture FREEZES WHILE TETHERED with Nikon D90

I shoot a lot in my studio, so shooting tethered with my Nikon D90 is very useful... UNTIL Aperture freezes every 10-15 captures, so I have to FORCE QUIT it and restart. This, of course, is SUPER ANNOYING, especially when CLIENTS are watching.
Can anyone please enlighten me what's going on, and how I could alleviate the problem? I'm running the latest version of Aperture on a MacBook Pro 17" with a 2.3GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. And I'm usually not running anything other than iTunes alongside Aperture while shooting. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I finally gave up on tethered shooting with my Nikon D3 and Aperture 3. Aperture crashed every fifth shot or so and made me crazy. I tried new libraries, new cables, faster computer, etc. I submitted countless bug reports. I waited patiently for a software fix, because I never had this problem with Aperture 2.
I gave up and rolled back to Aperture 2 on my laptop (which I use only for tethered shooting). Now tethering works perfectly again; it's a software issue. I've had one crash in maybe 2000 shots with Aperture 2, and I can live with that. It's a crummy solution, but it's either that or I buy Lightroom and scrap Aperture for good.
FYI: the raw converter is different in Ap2 than Ap3. What looks good in Ap2 looks underexposed in Ap3 (almost by a stop, looking at the histograms), and the color rendering is quite different between the two. If you try this Ap2 solution out, do some testing before you do a live shoot to make sure you're happy with your results.

  • Nikon D90 & Tethering with Aperture

I bought the Nikon D90 because Apple says it is supported by Aperture, but
all of the tethering options are greyed out. I have download the Camera
Control Pro 2 and gotten it to work but I can not get Aperture to work.
What am I doing wrong??? Does anyone else have the D90 & Aperture
Tethering working? If so could you please tell me how you got it to work?
    Any help would be appreciated!!

I had the problem with my D80 initially too. Change your USB setting under the SETUP menu to PTP. Then plug the USB into your computer. Make sure you select a/the project you want the tethered shots to enter from your D90 on the import page. Open the tether dialog again and you should be able the "start session". From there, just leave the import page by clicking on the project you are shooting into.
I know love tethered shooting. You can even fire the shutter from the computer, which I didn't know. Good luck

  • Lightroom and a tethered Nikon

    Hi
I want to shoot directly into Lightroom with my Nikon tethered as you can with Aperture.  This facility seems possible with Canon kit but for Nikon it seems the only solution is to use Camera Control Pro or  Capture NX...  Neither of which i have any need for and seem an expensive solution (just for auto-download) . Doe anyone know of an alternative?
Is it likely that Adobe will add an auto-download  plug in for Nikon? I know the Nikon SDK is readily available.
I expect that by the time Adobe will get around to it it will only be for the Intel Macs :-(

    Hi,
    Thanks for the link
Looks good BUT... I  have OSX1.4  (on a PPC G5) and it requires 10.5 :-(
If It works on 10.4 it will solve my problems.
If not I may have to look at an upgrade to 10.5 :-(

  • My camera Nikon D800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina... Why ?

Somebody Know why my digital reflex Nikon d800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina ?

I shoot tethered which requires that the D800 be recognized by the laptop.
However, I just figured it out. Nikon changed their USB protocol so that the D800 doesn't show up as a mass storage device.  That said, the d800 IS recognized by image capture and be computer in general, just not like previous Nikon dSLRs.  If you're tethering via Lightroom make sure the Nikon tethering plugin is enabled (which it may not be if you previously shot tethered with Canon).

  • Nikon D600 and LR 5.2 Tethering Issue

My Nikon D600 used to tether no problems to LR 5.2, but now it doesn't work at all. My Nikon D7000 works fine with the same usb cables. Any clues as to why this would happen?

Sometimes it's just not worth it to fight city hall. There are plenty of free copying/renaming applets, use one to copy the files to the destination and then import with Add. The difference in time will be minimal because Add runs very fast.
