NIS authentication from login window issues?

Hi,
I've a bunch of new iMacs that arrived this week, and I'm trying to get them integrated into our existing network, using NFS mounted /home and NIS for authentication, but I'm have some issues ...
NFS mounting: no problem, this works just fine, and is mounted on boot
NIS: this is where I start having issues, ypwhich shows the correct server, ypcat passwd can get the passwd from remotely and shows everything, and I can login using ssh or even sudo to an NIS user without any issues, HOWEVER, I can't login from the login window, I just get the window doing its little shake showing an authentication failure, and nothing seems to show up in the log files to indicate what the problem may be.
Anyone got any further ideas as to what to check? I have a number of older macs that are able to do this fine, just the newly arrived ones are having these problems

Did you tell the system to authenticate against NIS?
Just because you're bound to a directory server, that doesn't mean you'll automatically use that server for logins.
Check Directory Access -> Authentication and make sure your NIS configuration is listed in the directories used for authentication.
The order of entries here is important, too. They're following in a top-down fashion until the first match is found. This means that if you have a user 'joe' in the local domain, an Open Directory server and in NIS and you're checking in that order, it will authenticate the user against the local account and the Open Directory account before it checks NIS, and if the username is found in one of those two options it won't query the NIS server at all.

  • Macbook will not return from login window

    Hi,
I ran some updates on my sytem yesterday and since then when I select login window if I am away from my machine and then return, it will not come out of the login window. It does not give me the login screen even? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Probably to late but just in case....
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • LDAPv3 Authentication at Login Window in Leopard (10.5.2)

Hi. I'm having a problem with LDAP authentication in Leopard (10.5.2). I'm using an identical configuration to my Tiger set up, but it simply fails at Login Window. So far, I've done the following:
    1) Changed the TLS_REQCERT entry in '/etc/openldap/ldap.conf' to never.
    2) Tried to browse the directory using 'dscl'. I can browse to localhost->LDAPv3->server.domain->Users->my user... so it seems as though the directory is set up fine.
    3) Tried logging in using 'login' in terminal. If i use that command, and log in using my LDAP credentials, I can authenticate just fine.
I also decided to run the 'id' command on a domain user and, as expected, it worked. An example would be:
    dev-mac01:~ cssd$ id blp25
    uid=502(BLP25) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),98(lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),101(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),102(com.apple.share point.group.2),79(appserverusr),80(admin)
Finally, I just deleted the /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService directory. Rebooted. Recreated the config. Rebooted. I can log in using the login command in terminal just as before, but I cannot log in at Login Window (it shakes its window at me). The option in the Accounts System Preferences panel to allow network account logins is CHECKED.
    Any help is much appreciated.

I'm not using AD binding. I'm using the LDAPv3 plug-in. I choose to do it this way, partially because I can do more specific mapping between domain attributes and local attribtues, and partially because I don't want to have each computer have a computer account in the domain.
What the 'id' output is showing is that I'm able to search for a domain user (with no actual account on the local machine). In the LDAP plugin, the UniqueID and PrimaryGroupID attributes are mapped to local ones (for the sake of making the network user appear as a specific local user).. specifically UID 502 (represented as #502 in the configuration) and GID 20 (represented as #20 in the configuration).
As I said, this identical configuration worked perfectly in 10.4.x and 10.3.x.. but does not work in 10.5.x. If I DO use AD binding, everything works as expected, but it introduces other issues I don't want to deal with. Thanks for the reply.
UPDATE: One final note.. there are only two local accounts on the computer... so none of the domain users I'd be attempting to authenticate as would conflict. On and one more final note (because having multiple final notes is fun), the actual authentication mechanism is clearly working since I can use 'login' to authenticate. LoginWindow seems simply not willing to authenticate against LDAP as 'login' is.

  • Anyone using 802.1x credentials from login window

I have created a multitude of mobile configs in profile manager(server) but cannot get it to pass the user credentials from the login window in the dot1x reply to an identify, it always uses the machine name.  Has anyone done this ? Windows does it fine(machine credentials when no one logged on and username/password when they log on) and from what I can glean online it looks like it should be doable. It also looks like I ought to be able to use the domain\userid format when logging on but it doesn't seem to recognize that - traces show no activity(dot1x or ldap) when used.

I am having the same problem at my university network. I believe it has something to do with this part of the article you quoted:
"Once configured, when a network user enters their user name and password at the Mac OS X login window, the system attempts to connect to the 802.1X network with the same user name and password. This connection is necessary to authenticate the user to a network server."
It's not perfectly clear, but it seems the username and password for the 802.1X connection must match the username and password at login. Lame, if you ask me.
I'm also having a different problem on my network: My wife and I have separate accounts on our Mac, and every time we switch between users the 802.1X disconnects for some reason. Very annoying, but I guess it has something to do with a genuine user authentication - not a computer authentication, if that makes sense.

  • User accounts dissapear from login window after upgrade

I upgraded a MBP from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard--standard upgrade (not archive & install). It looked like everything went well, but upon reboot, there are no accounts listed, only 'Other'. Both Admin accounts on the machine seem to have vanished as far as the login window is concerned. All accounts are still on the machine in terms of data/user folders; with files intact (viewed them via target disk mode). Machine has around 90GB of data so would like to avoid having to do an archive & install on top of this--hoping there is a quick fix for this. Any ideas?

can you log in as root using "other"? use [this link|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1278] to reset the root password if you haven't set up one.

  • Missing user from login window at startup

I upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago and have had a problem with a user I migrated from Mavericks. The user won't show up in the login window at startup but will once I login with a different user and then logout back to the login window. How can I get my migrated user to show up in the login window at startup?
I did a clean install of Yosemite and then used Migration Assistant to move over my old user from a Mavericks install. My original plan was to import my old user's Document and other data directories and copy them over to a new user's home directory so that my data would be available but I'd clean out old application settings  by not moving that as well. Due to how Migration Assistant worked and my disinterest in diving into the details to make this work, I ended up using the migrated account instead.
Here's the problem, the migrated account was using a different home directory path than I preferred ("user_migrated" rather than "user"). I modified pertinent settings in the advanced configuration form available in the Users & Groups preference pane. Everything appears to work fine, except this user does not show up in the login window when I first boot up the machine. If I login to another user, then log out, my migrated user appears and I'm able to login.
I've looked around in Users & Groups and checked settings, but I'm not seeing any difference between my migrated user's settings and other user's (who does show up in the login window) settings.
If anyone has any suggestions, please share!

Found the answer in a post from 2012:
User accounts not appearing in login window
The problem was the migrated user was not authorized to unlock the disk. This is easily fixed by opening up FileVault settings and enabling the missing users.

  • Login Window Issue

Ok, this is hardly an earthshaking problem, but it is a bit annoying.
I can't get my login window to show my selected picture and empty password tab, only an empty tab for user name and one for password.
In System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options, I've tried selecting "List of users" and also "Name and Password", but my login window remains as stated.
    Any ideas/suggestions?

This is probably too late for the OP, but hopefully someone else will find it helpful.
    The problem is ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist.
If you're using mobile home folders, don't sync it.  If you're not, script it to kill it off at login.
    This what worked for me.

  • Windows Native Authentication from Windows 7

Has anyone successfully tested SSO with Windows Native authentication from a windows 7 client ?
I have a working setup with SSO on OID 10.1.4.3 but with windows 7 client I get the fallback login prompt instead of automatic login.
I have got a workaround from support but it still does not work:
    - on the client Windows7 PC to to PC security policies (Policies -> Network Security -> Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos) and select all of them EXCEPT the “Allow future types” option;
    - change the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\SuppressExtendedProtection = REG_DWORD with a value of 3 (please take a backup of the registry settings before any change).
    Thanks // Kerstin

  • Login Window weirdities

In my System Preferences -> Users & Groups, I have Name and password selected, but when I get to the Login window, it's showing the List of users, including Guest User, which is disabled. Moreover, I have several other users accounts on this computer, but it's only listing mine (and Guest User). If I go into Users & Groups, and make any changes in Login Options, none of them take affect. For instance, clicking Show the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons or Show Input menu in login window, these options don't show up on the Login window. I've run Disk Utilities, which is about the only thing that I can think of to do. Because I have a Firmware password set, I can't do a P-ROM reset.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to resolve the weird Login Window issues?

We cable internet users had similar problems in our neighborhood a while back. Sometimes the delay was there but more often than not, computers started OK. The system overview showed nothing wrong to the support types but one neighbor persisted and the techs found what they described as "confusing" reports on our node (takes in about four city blocks).
They came out and worked on the node wiring and things returned to normal.
The point is, sometimes the cable company doesn't know they have a local node problem until enough people rub their noses in it.

  • Multiple podcast login windows cause iTunes to be unresponsive.  How to prevent attempt of authentication from unsubsribed podcasts?

I have several podcasts that I have been storing following the subscription service.  These podcasts in recent updates to iTunes have been attempting logging on (for what I assume) to check for updates to the podcasts.  This occurs at initialization of iTunes and at periodic intervals while iTunes is running.  When the login/password window appears, iTunes becomes unresponsive.  Any media that is currently playing continues to play, but cannot be paused, fast forwarded, etc.  After a period of time, iTunes becomes responsive, it can take 10+ minutes.  At this time, I can cancel the login windows by hitting cancel the number of times I have individual password protected podcasts (that I do not have active usernames/passwords for).
I have opened the settings for each podcast and they are all "unsubscribed" and have set every setting that I can find so that the podcasts do not update, but I am still getting prompts to login causing iTunes to be unresponsive.
I do not want to delete the podcasts, because I still want to use the podcasts and associated podcast documents.  Any suggestions on how to prevent the podcasts from attempting to authenticate?
Note that I have had these podcasts for >1yr as unsubscribed podcasts and have not had this issue until recent updates to iTunes.  (Since 11.1 or 11.2.)

I've had a problem similar to yours since the iTunes update in January 2014.  I have not subscribed to any paid podcasts...mine are all free, and I don't recall that any have needed a password.  Since January, when I have iTunes open and click on Podcasts, I get a pop-up window that says "Authentication Required" needing username and password.  I can try 5 times with entering username/password, then iTunes locks-up, and if I click cancel on the pop-up window, iTunes locks-up.  I start Task Manager then alt/control/delete...that's the way I have to close out the iTunes window.  Any updates since January has not fixed the problem.  In about mid May, quite by surprise, I clicked on podcasts and it opened without the pop-up window showing and I was able to click on any of my podcasts.  After another update, I was back to the same problem.  The problem has to be with that update in January.  If you run across a "fix" for the problem, please post, I'd really like to get my iTunes working again.  I use Windows 7.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina's Bluetooth chipset unknown/odd login message on the login screen states Login Window Authentication Login window Name edit text has keyboard focus. In addition, the login screen is not remembering me

I have been experiencing several issues with my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. My MBPR is scheduled to go into the depot. However, I am wondering if anyone may be able to shed light on a few issues as this is the third "official" time my MBPR is going back for service ("one depot" trip; "one authorized" dealer; several in-store visits).
My Bluetooth is stating that the Bluetooth Chipset is Unknown (0). I also have had Bluetooth Preferences mysteriously change on me. In addition, while Bluetooth is off there are two serial modems turning on. I have turned them off, but they continue to pop up.
In addition, when I log in, my MBPR is not remembering me and my login name is not appearing on the slate-gray screen. The name and password are blank and the following message appears in the lower left hand corner. "login window authentication login window Name edit text has keyboard focus."  As a side note, I am the only user. The login issue is a recent occurrence as we just totally wiped it again via a Command + R, and I don't believe I have an accessibility setting set to anything that would cause this, but wanted to check.
Should I be concerned here? Has anyone else had issues like this? I don't want to worry if I don't have to. I have had so many issues over the course of nine months. 5-6 wipes. Airport card replaced and I am about to pull my hair out if my MBPR doesn't come back worldly like clock work this time. I just can't send my days trying to get a $2300 product to work for me any longer. No idea what is wrong with it, but it is driving me insane. Cross your fingers for me and any guidance you have or thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you. EMM

My guest files are locked, but again I am the administrator of MBPR.
I am worried about a keystroke logged or at least, trying to rule it out.
    Also:
Mdworker32(225) [and other mdworker numbers] are sandboxing; stating deny Mach-lookup
Com.apple.Powermanagement.control, etc. long attachment with those files with version: ??? (???).
    Postinstall: removing applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Outlook.app
    WARNINGS in Console include:
[NSImage compositeToPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction:] is deprecated in MacOSX 19.8 and later. Please use -[NSImage drawAtPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction] instead.
There are a ton of other warnings. Before I go through this again, can someone tell me if this is normal (all of it -- above too); or if these are symptoms is a keystroke logger or hardware issues?
I ask because originally, when my computer went in for diagnostics (more than once), Apple stated the hardware was fine (other than Airport Card -- finally). However, if I've done 5-6 total wipes; created new users; do not have sharing set-up; have not played around in Terminal; and am up-to-date with versions -- and various issues KEEP COMING BACK -- I am left wondering if a keystroke logger would be possible here?!? I thought maybe a faulty logic board, but why would diagnostics be okay, then? Not trying to be hyperbole, just desperate.
Please help me rule keystroke logger out or at least, tell me so I know, so I can take appropriate action. If you think it could be the logic board with symptoms above, that would be a great too.
All I want to do is use the computer as intended, but I can't seem to get a real answer, so after nine months -- I am turning to the communities to see if anyone -- anyone at all -- can help. The last thing I can do is have the MBPR come back from the depot and the same thing occur. Any guidance or advice would be so gratefully appreciated.

You are only as secure as web browsing to the LogMeIn website is (which appears to use HTTPS). If your login on that site is compromised, they will have a list of your computers that they can attempt to connect to. As long as you don't save the login credentials, they would then also need to know what username and password to use to connect to the computer. Granted, a little social engineering, and they could probably get some good ideas what to try for those, but if you chose to make your computers secure with complex and hard to guess passwords then it should be fine.
I've been using LogMeIn from my Mac to my mom's Windows XP system from July 2009, and to my wife's Thinkpad running Win 7 since Oct 2009. None of the computers involved have had any security issues at all, let alone any caused by LogMeIn. For my wife's PC, it sits behind our NAT Firewall in our LinkSys Router (although I did have it behind a CheckPoint VPN Edge router for a while). My Mom's PC sits behind a Netgear Router providing its NAT Firewall. When my Mac isn't at home, it's generally behind that CheckPoint VPN router at my office now. It all works nicely from behind one router to behind another. The Piece that you install on the PC will log it into the LogMeIN website and that is how it gets through the router to the PC. You login to the website, select the PC to control, then login to that PC.

I booted up this morning to find my voice over feature active. A black bar was at the lower left corner of my screen. When I began to click on the users in my login window it would not respond. All that I saw was the black bar saying authentication busy. I was not able to restart, I was not able to switch users, I was not able to shut down. I decided to manually shut down my Mac.  when it booted back up I was looking at the disk utility screen. When I clicked on repair or race it indicated that my hard drive had already been arranged. I was looking at completely formatted drive and I was having to either restore from Time Machine or reinstall lion. I had a back up but why did this happen?

A possible workaround could be to have the horizontal scroll bar visible all the time.

  • Login "Loop" issue after upgrading to Leopard from Tiger-iBook G4

    Hi Guys,
I've the same login "loop" issue as described in *Apple KB article #306965* only on an iBook G4, unfortunately the solution offered in the KB article does not help.
There is one slight variant being that the user desktop appears for a second or two after the blue screen following login before it returns (loops) to the login window. It happens on all (2) user accounts.
The interesting thing is it doesn't occur on either account when booting in 'safe mode'.
Apart from deleting these accounts and saving/transferring the data are there any other ideas, suggestions or solutions?
    Regards,
    BB

Did a clean install, cloned the HD with SuperDuper and then used Mig. Asst. to restore data back to the original HD. All now OK.
A & I was done in the initial upgrade from Tiger.
    Cheers,
    BB
