Nisus versus pages

I've gotten rid of my office apps, and need a new word processor. I've read alot about the nisus Pro writer and I'm looking at pages. Any thoughts? I've read a lot of good reviews, but 80 bucks seems like a lot. Especially given that pages is only 20.

Nisus's strengths are Indexing, Cross Referencing, Line Numbering, GREP and R to L support, plus an internal multi-file management system.
It may even ignore Lion's Auto-save!
On the other side Pages is way better at DTP taks and has internal spreadsheets and cross support with Numbers.
Get a demo of each and test them for yourself. Personally I got into a lot of trouble on Nisus' website pointing out what didn't work, or worked bizarrely. Like all sects, they are very defensive.
These are hardly the only two choices. Personally for word processing I choose iText Pro everytime. iText Express the slightly lesser sibling is free. As is Bean which is very nice.

IWork 09 - Pages 4.3 versus Pages 5.2

One basic question for three apps. I've already posted this in the wrong group... Grrr!!
Can I delete/remove:
Pages 4.3 if I've upgraded to Pages 5.2?
Numbers 2.3 if I've upgraded to 3.2
Keynote 5.3 if I've upgraded to 6.2
I have an iWork '09 (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) folder in Applications. (I'm assuming this was a default placement, as I do not remember putting the apps in a folder).
I now have the most current Pages, Numbers, and Keynote and they are not in a folder within Applications.
But I have the older apps in the iWork folder metioned above. Can I put the older apps in the trash? Or do the new apps rely on the older?

They are independent but may inadvertently try to open each other's files because they all have the same .pages file extension.
Given the choice trash the new versions they are horrible, clumsy, lobotomised and buggy downgrades.

Opening a Tab or Comma Sep Doc in Pages 9 vs. Pages 10

I just had an interesting, and frustrating, experience. Using FilemakerPro, I Exported a file, with the goal of Opening that file in Pages. I used Filemaker to Sort a large document, numerically and alphabetically. My goal was to Open or Import that file using Pages 10, however Pages could not Open the file. I tried changing from Tab to Comma to Mac to MS to other Translations, none of which would open in Pages 10.
Luckily, when I upgraded, I kept Pages 9, which I launched, and tried to open the Exported Filemaker File. It opened perfectly. So now I saved that file, and opened it with Pages 10. The goal is accomplished.
I've read numerous compliants about things that were dropped in Pages 10. The ability to open a Tab or CVS file in Pages 10 is frustrating for those moments when you need that ability. To have to go back, open an older version of an Application, and use it as a "Translator" doesn't seem like we've made progress with our new version.
I actually like the new version with the Format editing instead of Inspector. It took a little getting used to, but now it's great. There are a few things that could be done to make the Format even more friendly, as sometimes I'm searching for where to find the control for what I'm trrying to change, as it's not under the Format Tab I would expect to find that parameter, but it's still a better solution than Inspector.
Hopefully, someone at Apple monitors this Forum and will fix this aspect of the new Pages 10. To have to open an older version to open a file is not progressing forward. Open or Import should offer every Ext file format, to give us the flexibility we need, and not frustrate the end-user or have to use a Go Around like I just did.   Thanks and I hope this is helpful!

I'm so used to thinking Pages '09, was updated to Pages 10, along with OSX.   Thank you for the correction!
The NEW Pages won't open the CSV or TAB files, yet the older Pages '09 will. Once I had the file open with the older pages, I did a Select All, Copy, and Pasted into New Pages, where I am working on the document.
That's like wanting to watch a movie we purchased on DVD, but we upgraded to Blu-Ray which can't read DVDs. So we have to pull out our old DVD player, to play the DVD, and Copy it onto our new Blu-Ray system (if we could do that and not deal with copy right infrignement since we purchased the original movie, but that's another story all together.) Our new Blu-Ray has all the latest bells and whistles, but no longer player our collection of movies we purchased over the years.
Luckily, the video industry created new Blu-Ray players that will play our old DVDs. Now we need Apple to make sure the new Pages has all the wonderful features we came to love with Pages '09, and be able to read various file formats as well.
Sorry - off my soap box as I know lots of others have voiced their frustration with the new application updates. Offering the upgrades for free was awesome! Just make sure we're moving forward towards incredible new goals, not backwards...

EP6 using IE page load event

What event can I look for that will fire after the page has been formatted?
Using Internet Explorer on Enterprise Portal release 6. Code is a mix of jsp, html and javascript referencing a bean containing the table data.
I have built a script that will reconfigure an html table into one which uses scrollbars/sliders but it must run after the loader has determined the column widths. I have tested using a button and the code works fine but have not been able to find an event which fires late enough for the column widths to be set.
I tried using the htmlb table but scrolling by page method is not desirable for this application. Do not want the overhead of sending requests to the server every time the user wants to adjust position within the table.

Yes it is a problem using javascript. The problem is that the onload event fires before the html table is formatted.
It is also a problem that the htmlb table will not allow the use of slider/scrollbars.
Since the htmlb table will not allow sliders I must write my own table code to do so therefore I am looking for a method to fire off a javascript function after the page is formatted. This happens on the client side after it has received all the html. Unfortunately onload fires as soon as the complete script is received but before it has done the formatting.
I don't believe there is any example which covers this as the SAP documentation is very adamant about using the htmlb table view with buttons to page even though it states that tables should be kept short because of how cumbersome it is to page a table.
If I set visible rows to 5 but have six rows of data it requires a trip to the server and back to display the next row. If I load all rows into the table and setup a slider/scrollbar all that happens is the client scrolls the table - no server access required. Since there is no way to know exactly how many rows will be available there is no way to set the visible rows large enough. And if visible rows is set too large the page then becomes too big to fit the screen. Now add more than one table and there is really no good way to make the data visible to the user without allowing scrolling(not paging) of the table
Users are also much more accustomed to sliders versus page buttons.
If you have a script to do this please post it.

How to toggle the CTI so it moves left to right on timeline rather than stay centered during playback?

I'm working with Premiere Elements 7, so it's a little older. In times past, the CTI simply moved left to right on the timeline during playback. I got used to this for years, and it does have its advantages.
However, I recently did a system restore and reinstall Elements 7 with an available patch offered via Adobe's website. Now the CTI stays centered in the middle during playback and the timeline moves from right to left.
Any way I can toggle this so I can use the original feature? I've searched all over the internet to found out how to do this and can't find an answer.

You are dealing with Timeline Playback Auto-Scrolling Options - No Scroll versus Page Scroll versus Smooth Scroll.
I wrote all about them in

But to cut to the core of the matter....there is sort of a conflict in what you wrote....
The default Timeline Playback Auto-Scroll option is Page Scroll for versions 12 through 9 and Smooth Scroll from
versions 8 to 4.
Smooth Scroll is the choice where the Timeline Indicator stops in the center of the visible timeline and then has the Work Area Bar and Timeline moving from right to left. You say you want the "original". If so, you have the original.
If you want Page Scroll or No Scroll, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/General, try each of the 3 choices and decide which one you want.
I suspect it is the Page Scroll option that you are now seeking.
Please review and consider and then let us know the outcome.
Need clarification on anything written, please do not hesitate to ask.

Has anyone here used Scribus?

Hi...I'm new. Planning to self-publish on CreateSpace, have novel mostly done (on Word), need to start thinking about what to use for LAYOUT before saving to pdf. I work on a Mac Os 10.5.
I hear that Scribus.net is pretty good, and free. So, versus Pages...? Anyone have opinions there? Or about other layout software (don't think I want to invest in InDesign...)

Note that all the non-pro DTP software are limited by the flaws in OSX's .pdf filters.

The OP is adressing SSD's in particular. Neither Snow Leopard nor Lion have the ability to secure erase an SSD of a single file by user action. This because SSD's write data in pages, but can only delete in blocks. Secure emptying of the trash on an SSD is no different than a non-secure erase, as the controller will not permit erasure of blocks until the entire block is freed, which is almost never the case with even group file deletion. Erasure is simply the re-writing of the "allocation table" that the pages are no longer in use.
SSD's are only rendered "erased" of previous data after an indeterminate period of use, and re-use that would eventually free blocks for re-write, and then actually over-written.
TRIM helps speed this process, but does not alleviate the block versus page issue.

Malware on XP Partition!

I think I got hit pretty hard this time.
I got some heavy malware on the XP partition of my MBP.
It's very unstable booting, and once it's up, I get the typical pop-ups, won't let you install any new anti-virus or malware removal tools, and it just hangs up.
Right now I'm booted up on the OSX side, and I'm taking a backup off the XP partition. I'm thinking I may have to do a complete reinstall?
Anybody have any suggestions?
XP partition is useless, so anything I can do to fix the partition off the OSX side would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm sort of more "supporting" the effort of AV type software, ie, buy it to insure they are here and in business if/when needed, more than actually "use" any, as they tend to have worse hit on performance than a good Windows product.
I do have both ClamXav and Intego (full suite) installed and only really use NetBarrier actively, for years now.
Kaspersky says they are quietly developing for OS X. Norton 2009 AV for Windows has worked well, they may have finally "gotten it right" (AVG Suite and Kaspersky, tried but not my cups of tea).
I'm more concerned that high value targets can be compromised - and not fixed or repaided - and the best bet is to really strip a drive down of any partitions, which you can't do in OS X with Apple Disk Utility. Erase install does NOT delete and create new partition tables as it leaves those that were there in place. Which is why I suggested "Partition" tab as better than nothing.
I would definitely keep something on OS X and be careful, like allowing Windows to write to OS X (HFS+) with MacDrive7 could open a backdoor.
A good hardened router firewall is capable of blocking and filtering a large amount of port scans and login attemps and services. Web services are harder. Firefox w/ NoScript etc might help; I actually use IE8's 64-bit version, no support for plug-ins and very secure. I think Vista 64-bit is also good bet.
I started using OpenOffice when I couldn't find or be satisfield with numerous OS X programs (Nisus Pro, Pages, NeoOffice, etc) and is one of primary programs. Also comje to appreciate Windows Media Player for what it can do so well.
One last thought. Paragon's NTFS driver. With it you can write (adn delete) from NTFS. And use Disk Utility to repair, which was a surprise! I also like NTFS file system and that it doesn't allow special characters and such. So I have also used NtFS from inside OS X, and Paragon supports file compression now.

Comparisons between Pages, Word, Nisus...

Hi everyone, I am comparing full-featured word processing programs, because I am finally leaving Word. (Word 2008 is unbelievably ugly and badly designed; it's almost as bad as the infamous Word version 6.)
I need a full-featured word processor, and before I commit all my files, I'm wondering if someone has put together a comprehensive comparison chart. The magazine reviews are too short; they're not really helpful.
Or -- if there isn't a comprehensive comparison -- I'd like to hear from other serious users who find certain feartures good, or lacking, in Pages.

Considering who made it, it is perhaps no surprise that Mellel "wins", but it is a nice program.

Difference in PDF page size when using Save versus Save As

I am having a problem when I save PDFs from Illustrator with the page size changing
When saving as a PDF from Illustrator CC (Mac OS 10.6.8) the page size of the resultant PDF should be the size of the artboard.
Create New File
Save as PDF (Illustrator Default setting)
Open PDF in Acrobat
The page size equals the size of the artboard
Open same file back into Illustrtor
Edit the file in some way (draw a box outside of the artboard)
Reopen the file back into Acrobat, now the Page size is different from the artboard.
If I resave the file using save as, essentially overwriting the old file, the artboard is back as it should be.
It is almost as if Save As is using the artboard, but Save uses artwork bounds.
This appears to be a glitch but I have not been able to isolate the cause. Tried trashing prefs, didn't help. Had th same problem in CS5, couldn't figure it out then either, so I don't think this is version specific problem.
This problem is specific to my workstation, as my co-workers do not have the same problem, unless they start working on a file I created. Could be some kind of virus like problem.
Anyone had expeirences with this issue? I had really hoped upgrading to CC would have cleared this up but it seems to be following me, which is why I thought trashing prefs would have cleared it up.

Finally found someone with the exact same problem. Our entire department of 7 people is having this same issue. It is strange becasue we can't isolate where it starts.
If we save our PDF back to .ai file,
close and reopen Illustrator CC,
open the .ai file and save to PDF again,
then the file is "clean" and works as expected.
But then somewhere down the line we get another file that does the same thing. Then any file we open after that will have the same problem, unless we repeat the process I mentioned. This has been consistent between Illustrator CS6 and Illustrator CC.
This started happening about 2-3 weeks ago (mabe longer?) and is killing us when we run our PDF to our step and repeat workflows because they use the trim and bleed size for placement and this is being ignored. I am looking for a solution as well.

Page Size in Page Versus Other Word Processors

How can make the work area the size of the screen and make the control the size of the letters in the work area?
Background:(Useful if you don't understand the question only)
In word and in Mac ODT the while page is filled with the text but not page. I asked and read the manual. First I asked phone support about it, I called for another reason, and they said want the window to fill the computer screen no problem just pull it to the screen size unfortunately the text stays where it is not helpful. So I get the manual and its says no problem go to view and make it fit the with of the page. Now I have a giant letters and unreadable words.
In word they have a silly little thing call precent that allows the user to control both the size of the work area and the size of the image.
I have seen this question before but I have yet to see an answer. Is Mac ODT simply better then Pages. It seems better. It seems to have all the functions and more.

Interesting, the idea seems to be to turn plain text into rich text and then fill the imageable area with rich text in a single column.
Rich text is referred to as rich text and ODF Open Document Format is referred to, correctly, as ODT Open Document Text, but on the incorrect assumption that ODT is platform dependent.
There is no idea of frames within which one flows plain text, or linking frames across a spread, or of a light table after the metaphor for pagination introduced by Adobe, Aldus, and Apple.
There is also no idea of applying composition by automatic markup or by manual markup to paragraphs and to parts of paragraphs.
There is also no idea of a mechanical printing forme with composition and illustration wedged in place by furniture, or of a photo-mechanical printing form with composition and illustration pasted into place on the printing forme that has become a sheet of film.
To start everyday endusers off from scratch, they should have a film to watch. Steven Fry, who does a wonderful Jeeves, recently did a program for the BBC on reconstructing the machine that made us what we are, the Gutenberg press.
Something like that is what it takes to understand the difference between the single column mode and the multiple column mode of Pages.

Use of LOV versus selectOneChoice components in page navigation.

We will have several applications that our customers will be able to access. The list of applications is stored in a table. I would like to display the list of applications for the customer to choose which one they want.
When I use a selectOneChoice, the selected value only has the display string. I cannot find a way to access the value.
When I try to use an LOV, it wants me to bind it to an Server List Binding. I don't want to use this in another view object, I just want to display it on the page.
Am I even thinking in the right ballpark? I have the selectOneChoice bound to a view object in my application module, and I thought I would be able to access all the attributes in that view object through the selected item in the selectOneChoice item. However, so far I've only learned how to access the display string.
I appreciate all help, I've been working hard to learn this ADF stuff, what I've seen is very nice.

I am thinking that I am trying to use the component for something it wasn't intended for. I am not using it for a display in a table or form, and every time I try to use a model driven list it wants me to provide a server list.

IWeb blog pages versus TypePad, Blogger / Blogspot

I want to start a blog to share my thoughts, ideas and photo snapshots.
My question is: should I do that with iWeb and my dot Mac account, or use one of the on-line services like Blogger.com?
What are the pros an cons of those two worlds? Any experiences you can share?

Viviti is browser-based. I applied for and received a free account — there was nothing to download and I experimented with making some pages via Safari on my Mac. And I would be able to update those same pages via Internet Explorer on a PC, say, in an internet cafe.
I think I'll wait till mobile.me is launched. Maybe that has something new.
It doesn't look like the first incarnation of mobileme will have anything new as far as online creation of pages or blogs goes. For its feature set at launch in July, click here...
But probably in the future we'll see improvements to include that type of functionality.

Album Page versus Photo Page

I setup my site with several photo pages under album pages.
Then created another photo page and hyperlinked the photo for each album on that to album page to shows the different albums for each subject.

Problem I have is the main album page like it shows above doesnt look like that because it is a photo page and ends up looking like this layout here

When I try to drag album page with photo pages onto new album page it does not drop it over into it.
Anyone know how I can create album page so it will allow me to drop other albums pages into it like the first link above?

Confused about cover "art" versus cover "page" (ePUB)

I'm just wrapping up the creation of my first fixed-layout book for the iPad, and treading a vicious circle in my mind over the difference between the cover art as I want my book to be represented within the iTunes Bookstore, and the cover page I see referenced in documentation, books, and sample code. In designing my book I have images/xhtml for the front and back covers (as you'd see in a printed book), and then I have a cover page within my book that acts as "the first page" to correctly align all following pages to work as two-page spreads. This interior cover page is intended to look different that the exterior cover page.
My confusion is in the specification of elements within the package.opf file. Is the interior cover page for a fixed-layout book supposed to specify as the "cover" in the <spine> and <guide> elements?
I think my brain is simply freezing around concepts that are probably too simple to grok.

Sort of... but not entirely.
I created two versions of my cover: one is simply a jpeg image, while the other is xhtml. Within the package.opf file I specified the jpeg in the "cover" meta tag, and this image appears on the bookshelf when the book has been loaded into my iPad. The xhtml version of the cover is the first item specified in the <spine> and <guide> elements so the reader can flip back to a nice full page cover (and back cover) while reading.
Where I'm now slightly confused is how the cover dropped into iTunes Producer relates to the cover image jpeg included in the epub file. Does this image:

Appear on a reader's bookshelf after the book has been purchased
For me, this distinction is very important, as my book is a fixed-layout landscape book of photography, and landscape book covers look pretty horrible on the bookshelf side-by-side with portrait books. As such, I designed a very nice looking portrait version of my cover which acts as the cover jpeg in my epub file. It looks good on the shelf, but once you start reading the full landscape version of the cover appears (which is what I want).
I'd also like the full landscape version to appear in the bookstore, but I don't want this to end up replacing what buyers see on their bookshelf.
Wish there was a little more clarity on how various aspects of a book directly relate to the bookstore.
