Nividia Cards defaulting to VGA instead of DVI

Note: I'm giving the background of the problem, this is a about an MSI product.
I built DVR computer for my flat Screen TV, Model Zenith Z23LZ5R 23" Wide Screen.  I've had three differant video cards connected to it. The first was a Geforce 4 card that worked good but would default to the VGA port for some reason.  I confirmed this by connecting a spare monitor to the VGA port when the screen would be black when booting.  The TV would go into something called DPM mode, I assume to power saving mode to turn off the screen when there was no signal.  The problem is that it doesn't wait very long to do this and I think the card isn't seeing anything on the DVI and defaulting to VGA. I had Radeon 9800 pro that worked fine but it had power issues so I went for something that drew less power. I bought a MSI FX5200 and started having the same problem with it defaulting to VGA.  I just went ahead and used the VGA adapter because I was rebooting 3-4 times trying to hit that 3-4 seconds where the video card would see the TV before defaulting to VGA.  I was just wondering if there is a Bios update or jumper setting on this card that would force it to stay in DVI mode as I'd really rather stay digital, even tho the VGA doesn't look that bad. This seems to be an issue with Nvidia cards as the ATI Card had no problem, other than being pink tinted during the boot.

aberge3,
WIth HTPCs, I always make sure that the TV or another monitor is on when I boot the comp up. That way it will see the Screen and boot the video properly.
If you have a TV that is not on the input from PC when the PC Boots, the TV might not send the signal that it is there when the comp boots. Not all TVs do.
Take Care,
Richard

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • IMac 10.4.11 Because permanent vertical lines have appeared on my screen, I need to get a new monitor. The adapter apple sells goes from female VGA to mini-DVI. What kind of cable should I get as well:female to male?

If I use an adapter (female VGA to mini-DVI) for my iMac 10.4.11 OSX, I also need a cable. Should that cable be female VGA to male VGA?
Permanent vertical lines have appeared on my display, and connecting to another display (monitor) requires a cable and adapter. I want to be sure I am purchasing the correct cable for the Apple adapter.

What made me think I need to format if I upgrade the OS?
    I just presumed so really.
What made me think I need to constantly format computer with my problem?
Well, after many attempts to repair the drive, which fails, cannot even reach the log in screen, I am left with no other choice?
And also, I have to note now, System Preferences keeps crashing without reason, it either takes ages to load, just by clicking it to open, or clicking something within it, or it just crashes.
And temporarily, it freezes the computer totally, with no response.
Seriously, am I missing a system file or something? Anyone experienced this problem before?
My computer is literally a blank computer right now, installed VLC and Shades, updated Adobe Flash Player, installed Skype and Adium. I would say Growl from Adium caused it, but it has happened prior to Skype and Adium. Any ideas anyone?

  • Connecting an external monitor - should I use mini displayport to VGA  or to DVI?

I just hooked up a ViewSonic 24 " monitor to my MacBook using a mini Display Port/VGA adapter cabled to the D- sub port (whatever that is). The quality of the display is decent.
The other option would have been mini Display port/DVI adaptor to the monitor's DVI port. Are each of these options equally good in terms of display quality? Or is one superior to the other?
ViewSonic provides VGA and a DVI cables. I went the VGA route simply because i had the adaptor on hand. I would purchase a DVI adaptor if I thought the display quality would be superior.
Does any one have any insight?
    Thanks,
    WindyPoint

I've come up with my own answer to my earlier question...
It's the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
I ended up trying both adapters, and got the results I described here: [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9255959].
Besides the simple fact that the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter is the only adapter that fully worked for me, it's also cheaper.
Also, from a mechanical point of view, the nuts to secure a VGA cable to the DisplayPort version of the adapter are recessed into the end of the connector housing. This prevented my VGA cable from being able to be properly secured to the adapter--although this might be a defect with my cable!

  • VGA v. DVI for Vizio plasma (overscan issues)

Looking to use my Vizio P42HDe plasma as a second monitor for Front Row - The Vizio has 1 DVI and 1 VGA input. I'm currently using the DVI port for my Motorola DVR, so I want to use the VGA port for the imac output if possible, but I'll use DVI if I have to and run everything else on component video. Unfortunately, I need to buy a separate adapter for either solution for the miniDVI port on the imac, so I can't use trial and error.
The P42HDe is a 1024x768 widescreen display, so the native resolution is stretched horizontally. I don't mind losing some resolution to compensate (e.g., 1024x576), since this will be primarily for Front Row. However, I had some overscan issues with an older VGA powerbook (the borders would be off the screen) and could not get it to both fit the screen and give me the correct aspect ratio. I have read that if you're using DVI with Tiger, there is a checkbox for "overscan" that will fix this and allow you to set a resolution having a correct 16:9 aspect ratio.
Has anyone used their iMac Core Duo with a similar stretched pixel display with VGA and/or DVI? (I have a PBG4 and iMac Core Duo both running 10.4.6)
    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

DVI it is. I got both adapters and will return the VGA adapter this week.
All of the VGA settings would either stretch the image or overscan by the width of the menubar around the entire border.
Most of the DVI settings would stretch the image, but there was one 16:9 setting (approx 854:480 if I remember right). The display was recognized as "Vizio P42HD" and none of the settings exhibited any overscan. Strange that this would be the only available setting out of nearly ten "stretched" settings (it's a 1024:768 display), but Front Row looks great, which is all I was really interested in anyway, and it works as a second monitor in a pinch as well.
I'd prefer a setting in front row to display on the secondary monitor (front row always displays on the primary monitor), but I found a reasonable workaround. With the TV on, detect displays and set the TV as the primary monitor. When the TV is off, detect displays, and the menu and dock will return to the imac screen as the only available screen. Whenever you want to use front row on the TV, just turn it on, and detect displays and the menubar will return to the TV.
I'm going to try to make an applescript or automator action so that I can do this with my universal remote from my couch - I've already "learned" the apple remote codes, so now I just need to find a program that will execute actions based on IR input.

Using OSX 10.9.4 and want to have photoshop as my default for photos instead of Preview. Any suggestions?

In the Mac Finder, select the icon of any of your photo files and do a Get Info (Command i) on it. Then select the application you want to open your photo files, then Click on Change All.
You'll need to do this once for an icon of each file type, i.e. one on a JPEG file, one on a TIFF, one for PSD, one for raw files, etc.

  • Sony sd-card read as device instead as camera

Hi, I bought a Sony HDR-PJ320E camera because of it's compatibility with imovie and fcpx.
But for some reason fcpx doens't read the private file anymore after formatting the disk.
Fcpx read the sd card as a device instead of a camera.
I think that the problem started after I reformated the sd-card in the camera to empty it.
    Anyone knows about this problem.
And how can I recuperate my movie files?
Thankt a lot for helping me.

I understand what you talking about. But no way to read the SD card like the way you explain.
    I'll show you 2 examples.
    Card 1// 4G SD card
Card 2// 32SD card (formated the same way)
This is what I get in FCP
Card 1// Everything works fine - read as CAMERA
Card 2// Card is read as device and show content instead of movie files
    I'm getting nuts about it.
Ithinks I will convert the .MTS files by Handbrake and Compressor into ProRes files.
Hope there will not be to many quality loss.

  • Mini DVI to VGA incorrectly shipped with MBP instead of DVI to VGA

Has anyone else had a mini DVI to VGA adapter shipped with their macbook pro (2008) instead of a DVI to VGA adapter? I just needed to use it today and was told at the apple store that I had an adapter included with the computer. I went home to check and the adapter that was with the computer was a mini DVI to VGA adapter and the computer has a regular DVI output. I understand that later in 2008 the mac book pros were made with the mini DVI so I am thinking that there may have been a packaging error.......unusual for Apple???

    Hi Tingrin,
Most likely an error when the machine was packaged for distribution. The MacBook Pro has never shipped with Mini DVI, it was a dual link DVI port until they went to Mini DisplayPort. The MacBook, however featured the Mini DVI.
I know Apple has ceased to ship the adapters with the MacBook Pro, to my knowledge they did around the time of the mid/late 2008 machines. I know with the first couple of generations (MBP) you actually got both a DVI and VGA adapter.
I'd contact Apple, inform of the discrepancy and I'm sure they'll make it right.

  • What monitors are people using w/ there Rage 128 Cards (AGP) ADC/VGA

Need to get a new monitor and wondering if anyone is running a new LDC w/ this card?

thx John. I got the viewsonic VA912b. What a huge screen compared to my old apple 17" studio display CRT/ADC. Just trying to get used to a LCD. All my years of computing have been staring in CRT monitors. There is alittle bit of ghosting w/ LCD but I'm sure if i was using the DVI connection instead of the VGA it would probrably be crisper. But for right now i need to replace my old monitor the cheepest way and I could figure in buying a new video card and monitor at the same time. But maybe in the future i will get a new card and put this monitor up to its full potential. But I got to say it is nice looking into a 19" screen instead of a 17". I can't believe the size difference in the two inches.
    Chris.

  • ADC from vid card to a VGA 2nd display, out of stock?

We have an old quicksilver G4 800 mhz tower that a co-worker wants to have a 2nd display attached to. The card has 2 outputs, a VGA and an ADC. About a year ago, I went to our local Apple Reseller (not an apple store) and bought a ADC to VGA adaptor for 30 bucks (for another machine in use). It was by Dr. Bott. There is nothing on their website now. Dr. Bott service stated that Apple had something to do with the discontinued status? Locked down their technology?
Some site show any ADC to VGA adaptor discontinued.
    What is up?
Alternatives? Should I just get a new cheap graphics card? or are there ther alternatives. Yes, this is old technology, and we will get new computers, but we will have this machine a few more years...
    Thanks for any help
Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Apple did not try to stop others from using ADC. They made it an open standard, but few other manufacturers used it. Formac did make a LCD display with ADC. Most display makers didn't want to make models that would only work with a Mac, even though it would be cheaper (no power supply needed). Other computer makers didn't use it because they would need bigger power supplies (Apple made a CRT with ADC that needed 113 watts), adapters would be needed for most displays, and they would need special graphics cards. Because of lack of demand from other computer makers, no graphics card maker made any ADC cards for non-Apple computers.
Apple dropped AC for several reasons:
Multiple displays were being used more, and there was only one ADC per computer. DVI to ADC adapters are expensive and messy.
They wanted to sell their displays to non-Mac users.
Bigger displays needed more power (30" needs 150 watts)
With their main customer gone, the connector maker dropped the connectors, so adapter makers have no more parts for the adapters. Adapters are now scarce and expensive, but it's not Apple's fault.
There are still a few ADC to VGA adapters for sale:
    <http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/it.A/id.230/.f?sc=2&category=128>
    <http://www.welovemacs.com/mcaadcvga.html>
If the Quicksilver is the earlier (2001) model, such as the dual 800 Mhz, the adapter won't be useful with any of the graphic cards that originally came with it. It will work with 2002 Quicksilvers, such as the single 800MHz.

  • External display: VGA vs. DVI?

when i bought my 12" PB 1.33ghz the salesperson at the apple store mentioned something about this computer having a graphics card that is designed to work better with DVI monitor. I didn't quite understand what he was talking about, because I didn't intend to buy a monitor. Now I'm in the market for a (non-apple) display and I'm trying to figure out if there is any advantage to buying a monitor that plugs in via DVI over a VGA monitor. Nowhere in my manual can I find anything to verify what the salesperson said. Furthermore, the computer came with two adaptors--one for VGA and the other for a 24pin DVI. If the computer includes an adaptor for the VGA, it seems to me that it would be perfectly compitable with this type of monitor. The sales-rep at MacWarehouse also didn't know of any performance difference.
So I'm wondering if any monitor guru out there knows if there is, indeed, any performance advantage to using a DVI monitor. If you have any advice about what 17 or 19" monitor to by that would be great too.
    thanks

The VGA connection is an analog connection, while the DVI connection is a digital connection. The DVI connection should give you a slightly sharper display, as the video card doesn't have to convert the digital video signal to analog VGA. Many LCD panels support both VGA and DVI, in fact I don't recall seeing any that ONLY support DVI. So, I would look for a display that supports both, as opposed to VGA only.
If I were looking for a display now, I'd consider a 20 inch widescreen LCD, something like the Dell 2007WFP (around $425 when on sale). However, in the 17" and 19" range, as you've probably seen, there are numerous choices. While CRTs are in some cases cheaper than an LCD screen, they may not support a DVI connection, and an LCD takes up less real estate on the desk.

  • VGA vs. DVI connection on G5

I just got an LCD monitor for a G5 I'm getting tomorrow. The monitor has both VGA and DVI inputs and the G5 is coming with a DVI-VGA adaptor. The monitor comes with a VGA cable. So I ask stupidly (as I've always used the built-in crt monitor on Emacs) will an LCD monitor work noticeably better with a DVI connection versus a VGA connection, or is there possibly no difference? And if there is a differecne, what is it?

    Hi
IMHO it would be a shame to have a computer and monitor with a DVI connection and not make use of it. It should be DVI-D (digital) or DVI-I (digital/analogue), rather than just DVI-A (analogue). With digital DVI, each pixel you see on the monitor is an exact representation of the corresponding pixel in the frame buffer on the graphics card. In other words, the image you're seeing on the monitor is exactly as it was rendered and intended to be seen. With VGA (or DVI-A) the signal is analogue and under goes a conversion which can introduce artifacts etc. Whether you'll personally notice the difference I'm not sure, as I expect an LCD with an analogue signal will still be a considerable improvement over the eMacs CRT.

  • VGA but no DVI?

I have a 975x Power Up Edition mobo and was running a Geforce FX1400 dual screen till the card died. So far, I have tried an MSI card (Radeon x1650) and another Radeon X4350 but can't get a DVI signal. I can get VGA out of both ports. All drivers etc. updated but still no DVI
The cable, which has all pins, and monitor work OK on another PC with a Geforce GT 610. I'm using same cables and monitors as worked with the FX1400.
