Yes, I believe this is a bug.  I've filed one and hopefully we can get this addressed in the next public release.

  • Output file is different than timeline

    Hello everyone,
This is my first post here, hope you can help me out with an issue I'm having on Premiere Elements 8.
    What happens is the following:
I'm creating a video with a mix of movie files and still images. The format is a 16:9 Widescreen. As some files do not fit the size, I have unchecked Scale to Frame Size, and I have streched them out a bit. It doesn't look 100%, but it works fine for what I need. So, I have filled the whole black space in the timeline there with the videos and still images. I have added some pan and zooms in the still images, so it doesn't look so boring.
Now, when I export the video, I'm doing these settings: WMV format HD 720p 30 fps 1.0 Square Pixels.
Most of the video (98% I would say) exports perfectly. There are only 3 still images which aren't positioned as they were supposed to be. They are all too much to the right side of the screen, therefore showing the black edge on the left and cutting the right side of the image off-screen. All other still images and video files are positioned exactly as I see creating the video. I have done some tests, like 1.21 Pixels, but then it messed up the whole thing, all out of place.
One problem is that it takes me about 1 hour to export in this WMV format HD 720p 30 fps, so for testing stuff it takes hours.
Anyway... any clue of what could be wrong for those images to be wrong in the output file?
I could also try another format, but this is the only one I could find which the quality was fairly good in the output file (size about 170mb). It's for a YouTube video, so I'm looking for a decent quality for a video there, about 5 minutes long, HQ.
Well, I say beforehand than I'm a noob with video editing in general and Premiere Elements specifically. So, a little help would be extremelly important.
Thanks a lot for reading my challenge here.
    Fernando

Great, it worked fine now. No more weird behavior with the still images. I resized them in Photoshop Elements, and imported again into Premiere Elements. All beautiful and file size is smaller in the end.
NOW... may I use this same thread for another novice question?
When I'm starting a project, I'm choosing the following configuration:
    NTSC DV Widescreen
Would I get a better result if using NTSC HDV 720p 30?
Because at the end, I'm exporting my movie as Windows Media (.WMV) HD 720p 30.
    Thanks!

  • WAP4410N problems, slightly different than the previous ones

    Hello,
I've just purchased a WAP4410N-E V02 for home use and I'm experiencing some strange problems.  Whenever the device is close to other electrical devices, it slows down until it eventually grinds to a halt, sometimes requiring a power cycle.  I can ping the AP, or my gateway (over the wireless connection), and the ping times go from 1-20ms to 15,000ms+.  After a certain amount of time, the wireless connection completely dies and the AP isn't even reachable over the wired network (no ping, no http).
By close, I mean like 1m away in some cases, or less in other cases.  Since this is for home use, it's a bit of a problem, as my placement options are quite limited.  Here are the 2 scenarios:
    1) close to my vdsl modem/router
the wireless-G connection on the router is turned off.
    Distance is 1m.
The AP is plugged into the router.
This setup is completely unusable, as it instantly becomes slow.  If I pull it away about 2m and place the AP on the floor, it works fine.
    2) plugged into my switch close to the tv/pvr (tv over ip)
    Distance is up to 2m.
When the tv is on by itself, no problem
When the pvr is on, the AP starts becoming unstable.
If I turn the pvr off, it recovers (unless I left it on long enough, then it gets stuck for good and never recovers).
So I can really reproduce these problems now.  At first I thought it was completely random and I was trying all sorts of different ideas like changing channels, changing ssid settings, etc..
Am I really putting this device in situations where it wasn't designed to work?  Just because it's a small business device, I don't see why it shouldn't work 1m away from a home VDSL modem, or 2m away from a tv tuner/pvr.  I can't really mount it high up on the wall, away from all interference because it wouldn't look so nice.  I guess home use has different priorities.
Also, seeing how other people have certain unexplainable problems with these devices, could it be related?  I don't know how their setups are, but I can say that the behaviour is similar to other posts that I've read.
What is the proper way to proceed with this problem?  Do I just return it to the store?  Do I need an RMA?  Or does Cisco have some recommendations that I can try so I don't have to return it?  I'm quite disappointed that I've lost a whole day trying to diagnose these issues.  I was hoping that if I spend a bit more money on a business-grade product, I would save time with trying to figure out the quirks of most home products, but it seems to be the opposite in this case.
As a note, I have done the following, as per previous posts regarding this AP:
    - using A/C adapter, not POE
    - Hardware reset
    - Install firmware 2.0.4.2
    - set wired port to 100mbps
    - single SSID, WPA2-Personal, 11 character a-z key
    - B/G/N Mixed,
    - Channel 11 (tried Auto as well)
    - Key renewal 36000
    - disabled connection control
    - 802.11d disabled, Germany, 20MHz bandwidth

See all the settings available in XLD and that will give you an idea as to how ripping could potentially vary between rippers. I don't know the details of how iTunes works but error detection has a lot of different settings with XLD.  iTunes does some too, but I don't think the details are publicly available for comparison.
It may not only vary with the rip settings but also with the encode settings if you are using mp3 or AAC.

  • Yosemite upgrade causes Win7 Bootcamp to BSOD (slightly different than others)

Like others I no longer have a working Win7 Bootcamp partition. Unlike others I still see Windows 7 when I hold ALT booting up the machine. It starts to load windows then I get blue screen of death (unmountable boot volume) and reboots. I can get to the Win7 repair but when it looks for a Windows installation to repair it does not see any.
I can also still see files in that partition in Finder, I'm just really hoping I can get back into the system since I have so many important things installed. I've seen Loner T helping many people and read lots of posts, but I just figured I'd throw my hat in and hope there's a fix for me.
Here's the output of all the commands that Loner recommends to all first:

  • Desc in SQL Developer behaves  slightly differently than desc in SQLPlus

    Hi All,
Didn't see any posts for this, so I wanted to bring it up here.
We use nls_length_semantics=char, and therefore our varchar2 cols routinely show up in products with the datalength as charlengthx4 or the actual bytelength for the col.
However SQLPlus desc displays the length properly and designates it as CHAR:
    SQL> desc access_information;
    Name     Null? Type
    ENTITY_ID NOT NULL VARCHAR2(16 CHAR)
But desc in SQL Developer does not:
    desc access_information;
    ENTITY_ID NOT NULL VARCHAR2(64)
This is for SQL Developer MAIN-14.67
    on an Oracle 10gR2 DB
Let me know if this is a bug, or if I'm misunderstanding something.
    Thanks,
    Tony

In addition to the above mentioned discrepancy, I've noticed that desc in SQL-Developer does not look at the appropriate schema when your session is altered.
    ex. - In SQL-Developer
    1. Log in with a user that owns no objects
    2. alter session set current_schema = schema_with_objects;
    3. desc table_in_schema_with_objects
    ERROR:
ORA-04043: object table_in_schema_with_objects does not exist
    ex. In SQLPlus
    1. Log in with a user that owns no objects
    2. alter session set current_schema = schema_with_objects;
    3. desc table_in_schema_with_objects
    Desc works properly
Are these 2 issues reproducible by development? Are they to be resolved in the next update?
Let me know so I can inform the user base here, and thanks,
    Tony

  • Output jpeg looks different than edited RAW image

I just got CS6 and have been working on some new images in RAW.  Once I finished the editing I wanted to do in RAW, I saved the image as a jpeg, then clicked "open image" at the bottom of the RAW window.  The image that came up in Photoshop looked nothing like my edited RAW image.  It's as if none of the edits ever occurred.  I've looked on the internet and tried figuring it out on my own.  I'm at a loss and would appreciate the help.

Noel - first of all, thanks much for taking the time to respond to my question.  You helped me realize (and I should have realized this last night) that my question and problem statement lacked a lot of detail.  I'm new to Photoshop, but I've learned a good lesson.  Here's some more details:  I use a Nikon D700, WIndows XP OS, and CS6.  After taking the images from my memory card directly into Bridge, I can see that the images look "good", meaning they match what I was seeing on my camera display.  The metadata for my photo of interest states that the color profile is RGB, and I assume this is sRGB?  I open the .nef file directly into CS6 RAW.  Once again the image in RAW looks just like it did in Bridge and on my camera display.  I like how it looks in general, but I make the manipulations I want in RAW (removing blemishes, softening skin, etc).  Prior to saving the manipulated image, I click on the Workflow Options link below the image and choose 8-bit, sRGB, then save it as a .jpeg.  Photoshop's color space has also previously been set to sRGB, so the two match.  If I open the image from RAW directly into Photoshop or open the newly created .jpeg from Bridge into Photoshop, the image no longer looks like what I saw in RAW.  The image looks sort of hazy, the black background that was completely black in the RAW image is now visible in the Photoshop image, and the model's skin, which looked nice and smooth in RAW, now looks pixelated.
You suggestions about color management make sense, and I bet I'm still making some sort of mistake in that regard.  Any ideas?

  • Powerpoint renders slides slightly differently on different Macs

I have again this weird problem with Powerpoint.
Sometimes, slides look differently on different machines.
The difference is not very large, but definitely noticeable, in particular, if there are other objects on the slide besides the text.
    For an example please see
    1. (MacBookPro)
    PDF: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmacbook.pdf
    PNG: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmacbook.png
    2. (Modbook)
    PDF: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmodbook.pdf
    PNG: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmodbook.png
The effect is most pronounced on the first line of bullet 2. (The "R^d" thing is an image.)
I created the PDFs using the print command in Powerpoint and then saving to PDF.
I created the PNG taking a screenshot.
As you can see, there are two problems:
    1.
When I print the slide on the MacBook to PDF, the layout of the text is slightly different than on screen.
    2.
The layout of the text looks different on both machines.
Both machines run Mac OS 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).
The powerpoint versions on both machines are identical and up-to-date (12.2.3).
The powerpoint files on both machines are identical (just copied).
I use an in-house font on the slides, which is StoneSansITC; I copied the font files from one machine to the other; they all reside in ~/Library/Fonts, and this is the only place where these font files are located.
I have checked with 'pdffonts' and it seems to me that the Stone fonts are indeed correctly embedded in the PDFs. Here is the output of pdffonts:
    % pdffonts pptonmodbook.pdf
name type emb sub uni object ID
    NNCXIS+Symbol TrueType yes yes yes 24 0
    TYRNZE+Helvetica TrueType yes yes yes 21 0
    RTAEGG+MSBM10 Type 1 yes yes no 26 0
    ZXGVHI+StoneSansITCStd-Medium Type 1C yes yes no 8 0
    ZXGVHI+StoneSansITCStd-Medium Type 1C yes yes yes 17 0
    RTAEGG+CMSSI8 Type 1 yes yes no 27 0
    ZJTMTS+StoneSansITCStd-MediumItalic Type 1C yes yes no 22 0
    JHAIES+Wingdings TrueType yes yes yes 19 0
With pptonmacbook.pdf, pdffonts yields very similar output.
In Powerpoint, I have checked File -> Properties -> Contents, and the list under "Fonts Used" shows the StoneSansITC fonts alright.
The compatibility report in Powerpoint does not report any issues with fonts (only a few warnings about animations, movies, and "some shapes cannot be changed in earlier versions ..").
Does anyone have an idea how I could resolve this differences in rendering?
All hints, suggestions, and insights will be highly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

  • Why is the video inside FCP 6 slightly darker than the OS

Why is the video playback inside FCP 6.0.5 slightly darker than wehn I play the same Quick Time file just inside the normal OSX10.5?
I'm using a Cinema HD 23" monitor running at 1920x1200 and display profile is Cinema HD Calibrated
    Thx
    Kevin

It is darker because that is a more closely representational GAMMA as to what you will see on your external broadcast monitor. QT lightens the gamma to ensure that most computer monitors can see the footage. As stated, if you want the gamma to appear darker, enable FCP COLOR COMPATIBILITY in the QT preferences.
WHY does it look more like what you see in FCP when you view this on a PC? Well, that is the monitor that PC is using. Take this file, put it on 10 PC all with different monitors and you will see 10 different gammas. The monitors themselves can be set to certain DISPLAY PROFILES (look in your DISPLAYS section under COLOR)...so you can have a HUGE variety of looks.
The reason is because of the monitors and the computers driving them.

  • A slightly different running sum in a hierarchy query

    Hi,
I've got stuck with this problem since quite some time, so pls help:
I am basically trying to rollup/aggregate values from the lower level nodes to the upper level nodes in a hierarchy. But this aggregate is a bit different than a plain rollup of values.
    create table ent_rel (parent number, child number, child_amount number);
    insert into ent_rel
select null, 100, null from dual
union all select 100, 101, null from dual
union all select 101, 102, 20 from dual
union all select 102, 103, null from dual
union all select 103, 104, null from dual
union all select 104, 105, null from dual
union all select 105, 106, 40 from dual
union all select 106, 107, null from dual
union all select 107, 108, 20 from dual
union all select 107, 109, 10 from dual
union all select 101, 203, null from dual
union all select 203, 205, 50 from dual

    ------205 4 50
    --------207 5

Now, I need a SQL query or even a simple PL/SQL code to get the DESIRED_AMOUNT field as shown below:
Pls note that there might be many more parallel branches to a node, but I've kept it simple just to get the concept.

    ------205 4 50 50
    --------207 5 10

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements! That's very helpful.
It's also helpful if you format your code and output. When posting formatted text on this site, type these 6 characters:
\(all small letters, inside curly brackets) to keep the site from compressing the spaces.
You can do two CONNECT BY queries: one to get the desired amount, and the other like you're already doing, to get the indented child column.  The first will differ in that it has no START WITH clause, which means every node in your table will be the root of a tree, and that there's an additional CONNECT BY condition to quit looking for descendants as soon as an amount is found.  This corresponds to your apparant requirement that the desired_amount is the amount, if it is not NULL, and only otherwise is the sum of the desired_amounts of one's descendants.WITH     desired_amount_tree     AS
         SELECT     CONNECT_BY_ROOT child     AS root
         ,     child
         ,     child_amount
         FROM     ent_rel
CONNECT BY     PRIOR child          = parent
              AND     PRIOR child_amount     IS NULL
    ,     got_desired_amount     AS
         SELECT     root
         ,     SUM (child_amount)     AS desired_amount
         FROM     desired_amount_tree
         GROUP BY root
    select      RPAD ( ' '
         , (LEVEL - 1) * 2
         ) || e.child      AS child
    ,     level
    ,     e.child_amount
    ,     desired_amount
    from      ent_rel               e
    JOIN     got_desired_amount     d     ON     e.child     = d.root
    start with      parent           is null
connect by      prior child      = parent
It's usually more efficient to do join after doing the CONNECT BY.  For better performance, try doing your original query by itself, and then joining its result set to got_desired_amount.
Of course, it would be a lot more efficient if we could eliminate the extra CONNECT BY query.  That might be possible using MODEL or (starting in Oracle 11.2) a recursive sub-query.

  • Ship to address on delivery different than sales order

    Hi Experts,
Please help, I have a sales order with a Ship to" address in NY but when i created a delvery shipping address on delivery paperwork printed a different "Ship to" address (NJ address). I checked delivery header data and under "partner function" tab i see partner function "SH" has the NJ address. I checked the sales order and this address is not coming from sales order "partner function". Any idea where this might be coming from??
Also please help me understand "partner function" (SH) and how this is different than ship to. Thanks!

If the solutions already provided do not help...you please check the ship to master data (xd02) and check the address. Also check if the output program is printing the ship to address based on the master data or the delivery partner functions.
Also check if in the spool , earlier delivery output has NJ address and it is being retained . Couple of times, we had an issue of things being printed from the eearlier output and not from the current document. You please check if "New Spool Request" is checked at the output configuration.
    Hope it helps
    Regards
    Sai

  • The way Aperture renders my Nikon RAW (NEF) files look different than...

The was Aperture renders my NEF files looks different than NX...
Ok so I use all the in camera setting/tools to the best of abilities to try and cut my editing down as much as possible but when shooting RAW I end up having to tweak every images to get them back to what they really look like... I shoot often RAW and JPG combined and when I open a NEF in NX and a JPG in PS they are identical and need very little work, when I use Aperture the NEF files are very different looking from the JPG (or NEF in NX) and every single one needs tweaking (I get more redish/pinkish skin, often a hint of green cast to (slightly off WB/tone thing) and more contrast.
Below is screenshot showing the difference between a JPG (or NEF in NX) and a RAW file in Aperture
    [img]http://www.pbase.com/ray645/image/120052970/original.jpg[/img]
This is just a silly snap shot in very flat overcast light, and has the least amount of shift or difference of any image type so far, when I use strobes, shoot for a more contrasty image, gel for color and manual WB the differences are huge almost to the point that you would think you where looking at two completely different images and not the same NEF opened in different software.
How do I go about getting Aperture to render my NEF's more like what I shot like NEF in NX, JPG in anything, and even the back of the camera screen?

Thank you, that seems like will work, just having the boost turned down a bit on import has helped tremendously but I cant stop feeling like I am moving towards the "Fix it in post" mentality
I will need to get better at tweaking my images... No matter how I try I cant kill the pinking skin or the very faint green glow in blond hair or bright neutral tones without affecting other areas of the image.. I am sure I will figure it out but anyone having any tips or links that could speed up my process I would appreciate it.
The green is weird its like someone snuck a small florescent light into all my shoots without telling me, not major but enough to be annoying.
I shoot a ton of motor sports (3000 images a weekend) and shoot JPG and have gotten good at using in camera pre sets, knowing what I got and getting it right in the camera, I wish Nikon would give up the code or whatever is needed for all the info to be carried over to Aperture..... I would pay the $100 or whatever to use the NX engine in Aperture

  • 32 bpc linear workflow -- render different than preview

    Hi,
I've been experimenting with a 32 bpc linear workflow and have run into an issue where what I see in the preview window (what I want) looks very different than what is rendered out. The difference seems to be caused by a curves adjustment layer-- it almost seems like it is ignored on final output.
A screenshot of the preview window:
What the image looks like during a RAM preview or when rendered:
The RAM preview looks correct though (or like the 1st image) when I go to Preferences-->Previews-->set "Color Management Quality" to "MoreAccurate"
I'm using sRGB linearalized working space. Outputting to an 8 bpc TIFF sequence with output profile set to sRGB (I'm not sure what to do with the "Convert to Linear Light setting"-- does "On for 32 bpc" mean on when the input is set to 32 bpc, or when the output is set to 32 bpc? -- either way this setting doesn't appear to fix the issue)
This particlular project doesn't really use any of the things 32 bpc is good for, but I'm very interested in figuring out a fix for future use.
Here's the project file if anyone is interested in taking a look:
    cs6 version
    cs5.5 version
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks!
    --Ross

You must have use display color management turned off or simulate output set incorrectly. Notice the difference between this setup and your screenshots.
If you are going to use color management you must use the whole banana. You must calibrate your monitor. You must render to formats that support color management. With only a portion turned on output will never match the preview.
One more suggestion. If you're having problems with a render please send us a project with the failed render still in the render CUE. Your projects were comps only.

I am building a vehicle, with the cFP on the vehicle and a PC controlling the vehicle. Mostly Im turning on lights and reading sensors on the vehicle, but I am transmitting some commands.
My perfect world would be that if I lost communication between the vehicle and the PC, that the vehicle would recognize this within a reasonable ammount of time (1-2 seconds) and stop itself. I would like a whole routine for "com failure" to run if that is the case.
    My questions:
It does not look like I want to use the fieldpoint watchdog because everything I have read indicates that on a watchdog com error, the fieldpoint shuts down. Am I wrong? Should I look further into this?
I wrote my own watchdog. It sends messages back and forth on shared variables. If a message is late, it turns off a light (using cFP led's on the main module.) The PC VI is running as part of the project. The Vehicle VI (on the cFP) is compiled as an application that runs on startup. I have experimented alot with failure situations. The following work fine:
    - Stopping the PC VI that communicates with the vehicle VI. The light on the cFP turns off fine.
    - Stopping the Shared Varaible Engine. "Undeploy" on the shared varaible in the project. The light turns off fine. Infact both the PC and the Vehicle VI's register the dissconnect with their lights.
The following does not work right:
    - Unplugging the ethernet link! The VI on the vehicle (cFP) is still running (got another blinking light going), however it takes 11-16 seconds for the light to turn off, indicating the disconnect. This is quite a bit longer than the other methods that work fine (those are about 1-3 seconds). Can anyone think what is going on?
I know this seems like an essoteric question, but it gets to the protocal for the cFP. Should I be running my PC VI as an application? I am running it in the project.
    Thanks
    Kevan -
As an aside, is there a way to deploy an application and have it run immediatly upon deploy. I am having to reboot to run the application. I notice different performance if its running from the project v. it running as an app. Since I will be using it as an app in the final product, I want to test it that way.
    Thanks Again -

    Kevan,
The quick answer is that most NI ethernet protocols are implemented with 10 second timeouts. This is different than the undeploy in that stopping the shared variable engine will send unsubscribe messages rather than timing out. (Note: I am making an assumption on how the shared variable protocol works because it is partially based on the older Logos protocol used in Fieldpoint, and that is how the closing works for Logos).
As for the watchdogs, there are two watchdogs in [c]FP RT modules; the RT watchdog (which can reboot the controller) and the network communications watchdog (which can set one or more outputs to a desired state on loss of communication).
For a very rapid communication link disconnect, implement the shared variable as a boolean that has it's state inverted every half second. Have the [c]FP controller read the variable and look for changes in the state of the variable. If the variable does not change at the update rate (with some small margin for timing), then you have probably lost the link prior to getting a full network timeout.

    Aaron

  • [SOLVED] makepkg builds differently than local build

SOLUTION: my makefile with `CFLAGS += ...` did not pick up the local CFLAGS environment variable, with the command in my second post, my local build has the same issue as the makepkg build.
I have a project of mine alopex which I'm polishing up a new version for.  I've been running a locally built version for a while, but when I installed it with makepkg I'm getting all sorts of memory errors and crashes when I run it.
The first obvious difference between my local build and makepkg was that makepkg strips the binary - so I stripped the local binary, but no change: the local build in ~/code/alopex/ worked fine, but the makepkg/pacman installed version in /usr/bin/ did not.
The next step was to source /etc/makepkg.conf for the local build to use all the same CFLAGS and LDFLAGS as a makepkg build.  But this also lead to no change in the results.
Here are the two files, both from the exact same git source, both built with makepkg.conf build flags, and both stripped.
    $ ls -l /usr/bin/alopex
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48280 Feb 13 14:21 /usr/bin/alopex
    $ file /usr/bin/alopex
/usr/bin/alopex: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=03e8e16e7208d6c97bce6bd545f45d20c7a7606a, stripped
    $ ls -l ~/code/alopex/alopex
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 jmcclure users 54760 Feb 13 14:30 /home/jmcclure/code/alopex/alopex
    $ file ~/code/alopex/alopex
/home/jmcclure/code/alopex/alopex: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=0659354ed5a904fe93894f14d6bd413ea278396e, stripped
I can't figure out why the binaries are difference sizes and have different checksums.  I suspect there is an error in my code that is only exposed when built with makepkg - but this is hard to track down without knowing what makepkg is doing differently than my local build.  To be sure relative paths couldn't be relevant, I also moved the locally built binary to /usr/bin/ (overwriting the makepkg/pacman one) and it executed just fine.
So - my main question is, in addition to stripping a binary and using the makepkg.conf flags, what else is different about the makepkg build and my local build?  I'm guessing it might have to do with makepkg using a clean chroot build environment (right?), but namcap doesn't detect any missing dependencies or any other issues.
Below are many details that may or may not be relevant
EDIT: in case it's relevant, here is the `env` output for the local build with only the PS1/PS2 and LS_COLORS removed as they are long and I can't imagine relevant.

As a temporary work-around, I found that the following produces a working binary and somehow avoids the step that is leading to the crashes
    makepkg
    cd src/alopex
    make clean
    make
    cd ../..
    makepkg -efi
I've been tinkering with readelf to see what differences I can pinpoint.  I really don't know what I'm doing, but it seemed the symbols (-s) and dynamic links (-d) were all the same between the two version except for the addressess/offsets/hex-number-column.  So I tried checking the readelf -h output and I get a couple differences there - in this output, the /usr/bin/alopex version is the working one:
    diff <(readelf -h /tmp/alopex/pkg/alopex-git/usr/bin/alopex) <(readelf -h /usr/bin/alopex)
    11c11

    > Start of section headers: 52968 (bytes into file)
    17c17
< Number of program headers: 9
    > Number of program headers: 8
I'm not sure what these differences mean, but they are consistent with every working and non-working build.
Readelf -l output indicates that the extra program header in the nonworking version includes the following:
    08 .init_array .fini_array .jcr .dynamic .got
Each of these symbols exist in the working binary as well, but they are duplicated in the non-working version (still no idea what this actually means, but in case someone else can decode this ...)

Crap - you are, of course, right.  It seems my Makefile is not doing what I thought it was.  I define makefile variables for flags with += operators, which I thought picked up the current value from the environment.  But it seems not to do this.
I plan to fix the crashes, but I was stumped, and I wanted to know why it worked in some builds and not others - I'm hoping this information will help narrow down what my coding error is.
EDIT: a local build with `CFLAGS="$CFLAGS" LDFLAGS="$LDFLAGS" make` reproduces the error.
Thanks for the help - now I know which flags expose my error, so I may be able to narrow it down.
FOLLOW-UP: Thanks again - while I have no doubt that my troubleshooting steps are unconventional (as I have no 'conventional' training in programming) this did allow me to track down a bug in my code which I had been missing.

    Hi Shawn,
It sounds like the person who installed the hardware didn't install the software properly for you. You should reinstall this to get full functionality and control yourself.
    The process is easy:
) With the computer on, close all programs that are running and put the Creative CD-ROM into your computer's CD or DVD dri've. There are probably several disks; the one that you want should say 'Intallation and Applications CD' on the label.
    2) The Setup program should start automatically in a few moments, but if nothing happens, click your Start menu and choose Run..., then click the Browse button. From the 'Look In' drop-down menu, choose your CD/DVD dri've. In the list of files that appears, choose the one called Setup or Setup.exe.
    3) The Setup program will let you choose what to install. Choose to install everything. There might be two separate Setup processes that start after this: one for the soundcard's drivers, and one for the Creative MediaSource software. Within each process, when you are given the choice of Full, Custom, or Basic, select Full in each case. Follow the instructions in the programs and they will guide you through the setup process.
IMPORTANT: you will likely be given the option to use digital output only to your speakers. Only select this if you have digital speakers, attached to the sondcard through only one digital cable. If your speakers are attached using several cables, you should use analog output.
    4) Once all of the Setup programs are completed, they will probably have you restart your computer.
All of the above should have been done when the card was first installed, but it seems that whoever you paid to do the installation didn't bother with the software install.
After this is all done, you should be able to use all of your speakers. If you are still having trouble, you will be able to follow the instructions that you were given before on how to enable CMSS.
    Good luck!
