NMH300: single disk to RAID 1

Hi all, I've a NMH300 with 1 HD but in future I want to add a second (similar) drive to create a RAID 1 array. Did you know if I must format all the 2 disks or I can insert the second disk and then RAID will be created automatically configuring the raid option in the administration tool?
Thank you and best regards,
Mauro

Data on the 1st Original Drive will NOT be erased. Everything will be mirrored on the 2nd HD.

  • Explain "Single Disk Mode" + Adding new disk?

***I have already read all other potentially relevent posts on this site** (at least I believe I have)
I have an existing NMH300 with a single WD 1TB drive installed and configured for Linear1 RAID.
My apologies for asking a question that may be an easy answer, but after searching on the message boards and reviewing all the user guide material I still have a few basic questions.
Is it possible to operate in "single disk mode" with two drives installed? Seems like a dumb question based on the obviousness of "single disk mode," but it wasn't clear to me. I'd like to avoid Linear2 RAID b/c I don't want a single drive failure to ruin all the data in both drives and I want the capacity so I don't want RAID1.
I believe I understand that if I revert to single disk mode from linear1 then all data is erased. Correct?
Would it really just be easier to add the 2nd disk and have it run in linear2 and avoid all the hassle of a migration and re-build?
One last question. If I add the 2nd disk and configure it in linear2, the NMH is supposed to keep my existing data on the existing drive and just "add" the capacity. Correct? (I know I should back it up first, but just asking to make 100% I understand the specific details)
    Thanks.

    Hi ctizzle,
So that all these modes will not confuse you I suggest checking out this link. Since I've got my videos and music backed up on another drive and I use my nmh primarily as a media server I set mine up as linear2. If you decide to increase your total disc space by adding another hard drive and set up the nmh on linear 2 mode as well then I suggest you take a look at this guide.
By the way, choose your hard drives from the hardware tested list.
    Hope this helps!

  • Wae-574 single disk system replacement

    Hello,
We've had a wae-574 lose it's only disk. Can someone confirm the steps I need to do to replace it? I know I need to power off the unit and replace the drive. Do I need to do a disk shutdown beforehand?
Do I need to do anything to have it recognize the replacement drive and rebuild it?  All of the documentation I've found talks about replacing a drive in a multidrive raid 1 or raid 5 system but I'm not finding what steps I need to take in a single disk system scenario.
The system is still up and running it's just not accelrating any traffic at the moment.
    Thanks,
    Elliott

No problem. Mine knew the exact procedure but I had a hard time at the beginning convencing him the drive was actually dead since I could not generate the standard sysreprt or diagnostic report. There are no and apparently never were any drive lights. Once I got started I just had to figure out the missing pieces such as the de-register / re-register force stuff.. Also some of these did not apply as I do not have multiple drives for mirroring but the system let me know that. Here are the details he started me with...
++You need to burn this file into a disk and then follow these steps :
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/wae/troubleshooting/recoverycd/guide/17088rcd.html
There are 8 steps here, out of which you need to use 2,3,5 & 7 with the disk inserted and step 8 after manually removing the device. Step 7 should be repeated twice to make sure no file remains corrupted. Leave 1st,4th & 6th step entirely in this case.
++If you don’t have physical access to the device and the device is accessible remotely, you can download this file in accelerator.bin format from the Cisco website to your FTP server and install the software directly from there. In that case use this command on the CLI of the device :
    #copy ftp install ftpserver / waas-image.bin
(This example assumes that the file is in the root directory of the FTP server. Provide the correct path if needed.)
You can go through this document to refer how to install from FTP server:

  • Database files into a single disk or multiple disk ?

    Hi All,
I want to install oracle database 11gR2 in to database server. This database server has three internal disk so I plan to put DBF,redo and ctl file in to different disk..
but this is the optimal configuration by putting all the Database files (DBF,redo and ctl) into a differnt differnt disk or put all the files into a single disk with differnt partition? I want to minimize the disk I/O.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi;
It depends what you expect from your system. You can put into a differnt differnt disk or put all the files into a single disk with differnt partition. If you put all in one partition its more managable, but It also bad for HA.
You need to check your priorty and you need to decide what you have to do

  • Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk?

Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk? One backup is a continuation of the other and was created when I rec'd a message that the 1st disk was full. I'm using a iMac (late 2010) and both external drives are WD. Thanx.

With the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.

  • B-Series Disk details RAID rebuild issues after disk removal

    Hi,
after removing and reinserting one disk from a RAID-1 on our B-Series blades for testing, the disk details for the reinserted disk will not be fully shown.
Only the disk itself gets detected and "Presence" shows "equipped" (see attached screenshot).
It also doen not look like the RAID would be rebuilt.
So does anyone know how to:
    * Get all disk details again.
    * (Automatically) reinitialize the RAID rebuild.
    * Monitor the RAID status.
    * Be notified of a RAID failure.
    Ralph

    Hi,
not very happy with the fact that UCSM doesn't display a disk or RAID status.
Any chance that we might see that in an upcoming release?
    We are using ESX 4.0 U2, RHEL 6 and W2K8 R2.
Hope that MegaRAID tools would work and can be queried by SNMP (or so).
I found out how to get the disk data again and get rid of the following warning that obviously comes with not getting the disk details:
    Description:
    * Server sys/chassis-1/blade-6 does not fullfill Service profile vmw66 due to incompatible-number-of-local-disks
    * ID: 828447
    * Cause: server-failed
    * Code: F0337
    Solution -> re-aknowledge the server...
Any chance that this might be a bug (in 1.4.1i)?

  • NMH300 doesn't start RAID rebuid

    Hi, I have a NMH300 in a RAID 1 mode.
Recently I checked the disk status and here it is :
    RAID Mode : RAID 1
    RAIS Status : DEGRADED
    SLOT A  : NEW (I didn't change the disk)
    SLOT B : OK
Both Disk Drive Health is "Passed"
So I decided to do a RAID rebuild. So I click on the button, then on Yes. Then a message appears :
"Please wait for a moment while the action is initiated."
With an "OK" button. I'm waiting, nothing happens. I click on OK and Refresh the Disk page but the Rebuid hasn't started.
    Thanks for your help.

Try rebooting the mediahub and select to rebuild the RAID again.
There's also a possibility that even though the (slot A) harddisk passes or (slot A) harddisk health is OK but the partition on the harddisk is corrupted. Try to clear out the partition on the harddisk on slot A by connecting the harddisk to the PC and after that insert back that harddisk to the slot A on the mediahub and rebuild the RAID.
    Cheers.

  • Moving boot disk to raid 0

    Hi Guys,
I have the following volumes on my MacPro
    1. Boot Disk - 465.3 GB, 200GB used
    2. Raid 0 volume - 436.2 GB
How easy is it for me to move the boot disk data to the raid 0 volume and then boot from the raid 0 partition.
Also I have heard that if you have a raid 0 boot disk that the firmware updates can fail, is this still true.
    Thanks for any help
    Andy

Quicken Data files are actually packages, which can contain alias to the volume. Once I stripped the aliases from the data file, no problems, but for the longest time (years) everytime I cloned and used a different volume I'd run into trouble.
LittleSnitch hard codes the volume name, but also WHERE on the volume, an application is located. Very annoying.
So it may be plist or preference, but it could also be writing an alias to data file, or even back to the application package itself.
You would think at some point during testing especially, a light bulb would go off and realize there is a better way to code (unless it really is deliberate and trying to tie a program to only a single volume type system, which the Mac doesn't need to be).
Feedback the vendor. However, unless you do a lot of moving stuff around (like during testing) it is a "once only" event. If you name the new RAID boot volume with same name, might not even matter.
I do a lot of backup and restores during the course of a week, SuperDuper works well, not 200% perfect maybe, but works.
I keep my boot volume, though, free of my home account. That resides on another volume and can last for years. The boot volume gets changed more often. And I think having "home account" (but not /Users) not be on the boot drive makes it easy and avoids some of these problems even.

  • RAID card or Disk Utility RAID - Need simple comparison please.

Folks, I am trying to make sense of the necessity or lack thereof for Apple's RAID card. Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility. I was under the impression that I could buy a Mac Pro, fill up the drive slots and just have Disk Utility set up the RAID. I'll be working with HD.
    Enlighten me please

Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility.
Users that are working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit RGB video usually aim for storage speeds of 240MB/sec or more. Obtaining this level of performance across the RAID is the trick.
The Apple RAID 5 card can provide 306MB/sec. when configured as a striped RAID set, using four Seagate 250GB model 7200.10 internal hard drives with 16MB cache, when the volume is empty. By the time the striped RAID set reaches 80% full performance drops to 214MB/sec. A setup that can provide 240MB/sec. when the volume is 100% full will provide a more reliable configuration for 1080 uncompressed HD video processing.
Disk Utility can provide this same level of performance without the RAID 5 card.
So what is the advantage of the Apple RAID 5 card?
The redundancy of RAID 5 can add a layer of protection against the failure of a single hard drive. RAID 5 can be rebuilt whereas RAID 0 provides zero data protection. The problem with RAID 5 in a four drive setup is that one disk is required for storing parity data. This leaves the RAID 5 slower as only 3 disks can be used for performance. In a RAID 5 four drive setup the top speed available will usually be approximately 210MB/sec. and when full closer to 180MB/sec. As you can see RAID 5 adds some data protection but the price is lower performance. That is the feature that the Apple RAID 5 card offers combined with a bootable internal solution.
    Do I need 240MB/sec. performance?
Users that are not working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit video may find slower RAID performance will work for them. HDV requires approx. 25MB/sec and DVCPRO HD needs 100MB/sec.
On the other hand, when I am working with large video files the faster the RAID, the easier it is to work with large files. So while I may not have dropped frames with slower DV formats I still
prefer to work with as fast of a RAID configuration as I can justify.
    Other Options?
The Mac Pro has many superior performance options available for creating fast RAID volumes. My current favorite setup is the eight channel Areca ARC-1221x RAID 6 controller paired with an external Enhance E8-ML enclosure. You can see an AMUG review of it here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/areca/1221x/
This setup provides a RAID 6 array with twice the redundancy of RAID 5. It also supports up to eight hard drives which significantly enhances performance. Using eight Seagate 320GB model 7200.10 hard drives in a RAID 6 configuration with the ARC-1221x provides over 430MB/sec. when empty and over 220MB/sec when 100% full. Up to two drives can fail and the RAID can still be rebuilt. The ARC-1221x is available to AMUG members for $680 until the end of the month here:
    http://www.tekramonline.com/amugpromos.html
The Enhance E8-ML 8 bay enclosure is $595. Details are here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/enhance/e8/
You will also need two external Mini-SAS to Infiniband cable model Ext-MS-1MSB. I got mine here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FUOMO0/arizomacinusergr
So for $1340 you get an 8 bay RAID 6 setup that provides awesome performance, supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 10 or JBOD and can even be setup to boot the Mac Pro with any of these RAID configurations. I think this is a great setup.
    More Options
If the user already has SATA PM enclosures and wants to add external RAID 5 capability for minimal cost, HighPoint has introduced the new RocketRAID 2314.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
The HighPoint RocketRAID 2314 only costs $200 but it adds nice RAID 5 performance with SATA PM enclosures when using the new Mac version 2.11 driver. Using two SATA PM enclosures with 5 hard drives mounted in each enclosure for a total of 10 drives can provide RAID 5 performance of over 370MB/sec when empty and over 318MB/sec when 100% full. It doesn't offer RAID 6 or boot capability but this is very nice RAID 5 setup.
The card costs $180 on sale here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NAXGIU/arizomacinusergr
Two quiet Sonnet 500P five bay enclosures will run $1000
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/500p/
So for $1180 users have a high performance RAID 5 setup that supports up to ten SATA hard drives. The RAID 5 performance is twice as powerful as an internal four bay solution. Plus, this setup allows users to still utilize the Mac Pro internal bays for importing more data or for backup.
The Apple RAID 5 solution is a nice one. It just seems a little pricey compared to other faster solutions that are available. However, if Apple ever came out with a new RAID 6 card that used the internal 4 ports plus offered two external mini-SAS ports for a total of 12 drives, that would be a product totally worthy of a $1000 premium.
    Happy hunting!

  • Seeking guidance on upgrading from single drive to RAID on XServe

    Hi,
I'd be grateful for any guidance anyone can give me on upgrading my XServe to a RAID.
My 2GHz G5 XServe runs 10.3 and has a single 80GB drive. It's been running for 3 years providing mail, web sites (around 100) and around 10 java applications for that time without any trouble. However, I'd like to get it running on a mirrored RAID array (RAID1).
Is it possible to backup the existing disk to a FW drive. Insert a new disk, format the old and new disk as a RAID1 setup, then restore the previous OS setup, user, mail, web sites, applications etc?
I've got this server running very sweetly, it's extremely reliable but I'm worried about the disk failing.
I've read other posts here that have described trying to do this but that the old backup may overwrite low level RAID1 formatting upon restore. Any thoughts on how I can avoid that?
    Kind Regards,
    Chris.

    Hi Chris
I’ve never done it that way because of the potential problems you describe. Perhaps some of the other guys have a way of making that method reliable. Seeing as you have an XServe why don’t you buy two drives instead of one? They are cheap enough nowadays. 2x250GB SATA drives should do.
I would target disk mode the server to a laptop for example and prep your RAID Mirror that way. Restore using DU or clone using CCCloner to the new RAID, restart and test. This way if you hit any problems you will still have a working server on your original drive. Plan on 40mins to an hour downtime.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Panther server, move from single drive to RAID 1

    Hello,
I am trying to find out if this can be done on a system (Xserve G3) with Panther server running on it. I know this is old, but right now the school will not upgrade the server.
It has the original 60GB hard drive and is running out of space. I would like to replace it with two 500GB HD's using software RAID.
In Panther, can you clone or CCC the OS and move it to a RAID1 from a single drive, or do we need to install and configure a new installation on the RAID set?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

There were major changes in Disk format from 10.3 Panther to 10.4 Tiger, especially in RAID drives. I believe the 10.4 Server Installer converts your Boot RAID (if applicable) but does not deal with your data-only RAID drives. In the case you are proposing, the upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 may require you to copy your data-only RAID drives yet again.
My older SCSI RAID drives which ran fine in 10.3 were not recognized as having a valid Driver (of any description) in 10.4. The old drives could not be mounted, and therefore could not be "promoted" to 10.4 RAID Drives. Luckily, RAID tools in 10.4 Tiger are much improved.
Using only one additional full-size drive, I was able to move the array to a spare Mac, install 10.3 to get them recognized, then Network-mount and copy them onto a single-member RAID array in 10.4 Server. Creating a single member of a Mirrored Array required some fancy command-line work in 10.4 Server.
The bottom line: If you can upgrade to 10.4 Server first, it will be much less work (and much less risk).

  • Single drive in raid interface(solved)

Desire to utilize a raid connector for an IDE hard drive in my a7v333 mobo to provide a separate drive for my system.
Most descriptions allow for two drives to be utilized in raid configs.
My computer has a promise PDC20276 raid controller which can be set up prior to boot as a raid 0 array with a selection which permits a single device.  However, even in windows, I have never been able to run a single device as I recall (ten years or more back when, in the last millenia!).
Please advise how to connect and use a single drive in the interface setup I have, as established in archlinux.
The mobo has two separate connectors provided for raid systems. I will use the blue connector for  my single drive.
From that setup of a single drive, the computer boots into arch but I do not find the drive listed in K disk free.
What modules are necessary for this function?

    try this utility : http://people.redhat.com/~heinzm/sw/dmraid/
the biggest problem with onboard ataraid/sataraid controllers under linux seems to be to find out what devices they create.
Also the promise fasttrak onboard raid controllers have much more in common with software raid solutions than with real hardware raid controllers like the adaptec scsi raid controllers.
