No 10.8 disc set with new Mini?

So I understood from the guy at the Apple store when I bought my Mini that there is a partition on my drive where the OS is stored.  It didn't dawn on my until I remembered the reason why I bought this new mini.....what happens if my hard disc fails and I need a new one.  My last Mini had no retrievable data, not a problem since I do daily back ups.  But in the event my drive ever goes down on this how do I go about installing 10.8 on the new drive?
I have an external DVD burner/drive I on tap for any disc issues so would have that, but I don't understand how Apple assumes the owner will get the OS on their system in the event of a drive failure.  Thanks.

All new Macs support an Internet Recovery mode where the contents of the Recovery HD partition are downloaded from the Internet. You can get to this mode by rebooting and holding Command-R if the Recovery HD is not available (ie, with a new HD in place), or you can force it into this mode by holding Option-Command-R at boot.
You can also use Apple's Recovery Disk Assistant to create a standalone USB drive containing the Recovery tools: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433

  • Registration Troubles with new mini

I just got a new macmini 1.83 with 1g ram bundled from a Apple retail store.
When I tried to register online the serial number was not accepted. I had to imput the product number as a temp number. Anyone else having the same Problems with new minis?

If it's a very recently built computer, it may take a week or two for the serial numbers in Apple's online database to catch-up. If you call AppleCare Support in the U.S., there's an option for AppleCare issues that are not technical support about your computer. Those folks can register it for you by going directly to their database.

  • Setting up new mini with sisters old software???

Im trying to export all of my sisters songs from her ipod software to my mini, is that possible or do i have to use my own software that i got with my mini? please help!?

I'm assuming that by "ipod software," you mean iTunes? The iTunes that you got with your iPod, and the one that she got with hers is the same. You should be able to plug it into her computer, and upload the songs just like you would on your computer. If your iPod is set to automatically sync with your iTunes when you plug it in, you will have to set it to manually update, so that it doesn't delete all your songs when you plug it into her computer. Switch it to manual update in iTunes preferences while your iPod is connected, and click on iPod.

  • HELP: Can't connect to the internet with new mini

    Hi
I've just unpacked the new mini I bought today. I use a LAN that I set up myself. I use a Linksys Router 11Mb/s. All computers atached to it work fine, including an iBook G4 with Airport Extreme.
The Mini does recognize my network via Airport, and the Airport card MAC adress is already in the authorize list, but still does not connect.
Worse, I plug an Etherner Cable to the plug that works with a PC, but still no internet. I set up a manual IP adress instead of DHCP. Still no internet. I reinstalled the entire OS X, from start, still no internet.
Any ideas, anyone ? Thanks !
pd: This is frustrating, I just brought it from the store today

Try turning your router/modem off. Now connect the ethernet cable to the mini and the router and restart the router/modem. If it works, update the system.
When connecting airport, make sure you turn off the router/modem, and then take out the ethernet cable and then restart the router/modem and then power up your mac mini and set up airport.
If the above does not work, RESET the modem/router to its default settings. Once trained, use a ethernet connected Mac to set it up (the Mini perhaps).
I am suggesting this because I had to turn off my router to connect one of my Macs before I could surf the net. i also find resetting the router can sometimes iron out connection issues.

  • Apple DVI to ADC Adapter with new mini

Has anyone have any experience using the Apple $99 DVI to ADC Adapter
with a New ( or old ) Mac Mini... I have a 22 inch Apple Cinema and
I love it... especially the non-glare screen.
The only complaints I've heard were the ADC Adapter size was large and it gets hot.
Anything else???? Does the sleep feature work?
    Thanks in advance, Tom

    Tom,
I currently use Apple's $99.00 DVI to ADC adapter with pre 2009 Mac Mini and Apple 17" ADC Studio monitor.
This setup in use for approx. 2 years now and to date no problems observed.
    The unit's dimensions are approx. 4" x 4" x 1.5".
In use from 9:00 am this morning, in use as I type, I place my hand on unit now. The unit is warm to the touch. I can leave my hand on unit for 15-20-30 minutes. Certainly not HOT.
I have had sleep/wake problems with both mini and monitor in the past. I cant say that these issues are related to or caused by the dvi/adc adapter. I have no current sleep/wake problems.
UPS/System preference settings can also affect sleep/wake options.
Sleep feature works as the unit is also connected via usb to the machine.
    Regards,
    TrevorB

  • Apple Display doesn't shut off with new Mini

I have a brand new 2009 Mini hooked up to my 23" Apple Cinema HD display.
When I shut down the Mini, the power on the display does not power down.
I used to have this same display hooked up with the same mini DVI to DVI connector hooked up to my late 2006 MacBook. The display used to shut down when I shut down the MacBook.
There is absolutely nothing different in my setup between the MacBook and the new Mini as far as connections and cables as I'm using the same cables.
Is anyones display powering off with their new Mini?
I wouldn't think that the mini DVI out would be any different on the MacBook as compared to the new Mini. But apparently there is unless I'm missing something.
I don't really want to live with this as all of my computers shut down automatically at night using the Energy Saver control panel. With the new Mini, the display remains on all night.
Maybe I should have bought a new MacBook Pro 13 to replace my older White MacBook 13.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

I would hate to say that this might be an upgrade issue with recent updates.. I 'used' to be able to power off the monitor (touch the switch on the side and the light goes off) but no longer able to.
And to confuse the issue, the 23" ACD power switch is now acting like the Mac Pro's power switch.. While the Mac Pro is running a lengthy process, I'll often turn off the monitor if I am away for a few hours but now, when I touch the ACD power button, the Mac Pro responds with a "shut down, sleep or log off" kind of query.. Well that is certainly new to me..
Does this happen to yours as well?

  • Strange USB Current Limit/Port Shutoffs With New Mini

I just upgraded to a new Mini and put 2gig of RAM in it. Everything is great except.....I'm getting these bizarre "USB Over Current Notice" popups when trying to put a sixth plug into the USB tree. I've been through my equipment, it's not bad hardware(at least not a USB peripheral). I've tried eliminating one device after another, but I only seem to get the warning when plugging in a sixth plug(even just an iPod Shuffle dock). So it's as if my new Mini won't accept a sixth USB device. I would appreciate any help that folks have to offer.

Plugged directly into the Mini are an iPod cable, a Miglia TVMax, and the cord for the powered USB Hub. Plugged into the hub(which is new and bought in response to the main issue here) is my keyboard(happy hacking lite 2), a logitech marbleman trackball and a creative xmod.
I ran my mini only briefly before the RAM upgrade, and I had no issues at that time. Can RAM cause this kind of an issue with USB?

  • 2nd gen, not syncing contacts with new mini

I have just moved from a G5 to a Mac mini, iTunes moved fine, when I notice my contact were not updating I told my 2nd gen iTouch to sync with the mini. Now my contact on the iTouch are empty, I can ad new with the iTouch the show on my mini.

What does this mean: " I can ad new with the iTouch the show on my mini."
What I suspect is that when you synced the iPod to the new computer iTunes erased the iPod and replaced its contents with what was in the library of the new computer.

  • Cd's and system discs  problems with new apple quick silver g4

hello hopefully someone can help me I just purchased this macine on ebay 2 weeks ago. The problem I am having is for one I cannot open the cd-r-rw without using popcorn to open it. When I try to insert a disc for an application or the system disks that he included with the purchase I cannot read any of them in fact as soon as i close the drawer with the disc in it it reopens in a few minutes. I can't even find a way to open the drawer with out popcorn there is no external place to open this up like my old cd rom had. I had a power mac beige g3. So in order to load anything I have to download the disk to a usb small portable plug memory card, plug it in to the new machines usb port and then download the program through there. So what do I need to be able to put a system disk or program disc into this machine and also able to open the tray I have now. Do I need something like a external cd-rom drive that hooks up into my usb port to be able to use the discs or what.
The one thing it does do is play a music disc if you openned it with popcorn and close it it plays the music disc but not the other type thanks Tim L

There are several things you can check or test. Follow these 3 rules and you'll be able to change drives in any Mac.
    1. After changing Hard Drives ... are you restarting AND zapping PRAM or just restarting? Any changes to hardware configuration require zapping the PRAM (hold down command, option, p and r keys while restarting).
    2. Making a copy of a startup disk onto a second Hard Drive is never as good as installing the OS independently on each drive. Even if they're both in the same computer. Be sure your new optical drive is in place and connected when installing OS.
    3. Hard drives and optical drives have configuration addresses or designations. The ATA bus in Macs support 2 devices on each channel (2 channels). The optical drives are normally connected to the slower ATA/66 bus and are designated Master and Slave. If both drives are set as Master a conflict will occur. Check the jumpers located at the rear of the drive where the ribbon cable connects. There's usually a sticker on the drive which shows how to set them for the appropriate configuration.
    Hope this helps ....

  • Is Cinema Display M9178LL/A (A1081) compatible with new Mini?

Can the new Mac Mini utilize an older Cinema Display such as the Apple M9178LL/A  23" HD display (Model A1081).  The user's manual for the display states the following:
To use your 20-inch or 23-inch Apple Cinema Display, you need:
Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later and one of the following computers:
    Power Mac G5
Power Mac G4 with a DVI port*
    PowerBook with a DVI port
I see no mention of the Mac Mini.
If it is compatible, what cables/adapters do I need?
    Thanks for the help.

Yes, plugs right in (adapters inc anyhow), i have 2 mac minis on these type of display.

  • Dim VGA with new mini ?

I'm probably breaking all kind of rules (don't mean to) If you have the upgraded 1.5GHz mini with the 64MB VRAM, I have a question for you. Do you use a CRT monitor with a VGA connection? And if so, is your display bright with nice colors and contrast, or are you experiencing the well-documented dim VGA problem ?
I'm thinking of getting a mini for myself at home, but I don't want to buy a new LCD monitor at this time when I have a nice 17" VGA display.Up to this point, Apple has done nothing to address this issue, which stems from an inadequate output voltage. I'm hoping that along with the increase in VRAM with the 1.5GHz upgrade, Apple also might have fixed the voltage problem.

I have a Sony CPD-G220R CRT and my mini display is quite dim and dull compared to a Windows display on the same monitor.

You might consider carefully reflashing the bios.  Did you follow all of the correct flashing steps the last time about clearing cmos and rebooting into optimized defaults, etc.?  See:  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84865.msg606175#msg606175
Also- consider flashing back to 1.8 as there is little if anything in 1.9 for your processor, and it worked in 1.8 didn't it?
I used MSI Live Update 3 and Live BIOS to update my bios. After the update I chose "Yes" to reboot. Then I chose "optimized defaults"
in the bios. After saving settings and rebooting I entered the bios again immediatly and changed the settings.
Could something have gone wrong when flashing the bios?
And yes.. Nvidia Monitor worked with 1.8, but I don't understand why it doesn't work now? And the reboots.. I had those with 1.8 too,
but they seem to occur less frequently now. I don't know if that is related to the bios however.

  • Sleep issues with new Mini

Why does Mail 5.0 appear to download messages while my Mac mini is asleep? And why is my Lacie external drive (d2 Quadra v3 attached via USB port) not sleeping when the mini is sleeping?

When I check my e-mail with my iPhone in the morning, there are no messages there, because when I wake up the Mini the next morning, it has already downloaded messages I received overnight. I can tell the computer was not actually awake, because no Time Machine backups had been done since I put it to sleep the night before.
I found other threads referring to Lacie drives not spinning down, so I'm assuming that's a problem with the drive, not with Lion trying to access the drive while the computer is asleep.
