No 16:9 movies for me with FCE + iDVD?

I've just tried, at the eleventh hour as per usual, to burn my 16:9 FCE project to DVD. But iDVD keeps spitting out a squashed 4:3 version which looks nasty. I've just read this -
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305337
So, basically, it just won't work and I need to give Apple some more money. I'm baffled - I can't create a widescreen movie on my Mac.
Really dissapointing and unfair. These are key, advertised features which don't work with no proper reason.
Any other advice?
Thanks

Thanks Tom, although Anamorphicizer seems to want QT Pro (needs to resave file in QT) and myDVDedit seems hugely complicated for something which will end up in iDVD. Shame. Will continue to investigate.

  • USB external portable HD for use with FCE and MBP ???????

I've seen a 120 GB USB portable external Seagate HD for $117. Would this be usable as a scratch disk for use with my MBP 2.0 and final cut express HD 3.5. Are there problems with using USB externals? FW external hd's seem to be a good deal more expensive.
    Thanks.
    Maurice

I bought one recently very cheaply to use for general storage.
I found that FCE 3.0 worked perfectly and have been using it ever since instead of my FW HD.
HOWEVER, before you dash out and buy one take note that I have only been tinkering around and experimenting with comparatively short projects of no importance.
I strongly suspect that if I made a long and complicated film I might suffer - so pay the extra and get a FW HD !
Incidentally for normal storage purposes the USB2 HD takes over twice the time to move files back and forth. So even for non-FCE use the Firewire HD is twice as fast.

  • Is there a preferred Video Camera in the forum for use with FCE?

I am on the hunt for a new HD camcorder in the 800 to 1200 US dollar range. Is there a preferred recording format or anything specific to look for that will help my camera work best with FCE or better yet are there things I should try to avoid?
I am looking for something compact so that I can carry it with me on trips easily, but still give a good quality HD image. Thanks

The main consideration is that AVCHD is a hard drive based format whereas HDV is tape based. The nature of tapes is that they're relatively inexpensive so it's not such a big deal to save your tapes as backups in case you ever need to restore your project from the original footage. For AVCHD on the other hand, you'd need to make a backup by copying the whole file directory to an external drive for safe keeping, and if the drive fails or gets corrupted then you are out of luck.
There are other less important things to keep in mind. AVCHD can reach a maximum resolution of 1920x1080, whereas HDV by comparison reaches its peak at 1440x1080. I've heard some say that AVCHD cameras generally work less well in low lighting conditions, but I personally haven't noticed too much of a difference. Finally, the market seems to generally be moving away from a tape based workflow. Not that AVCHD is exactly the format of the future (and you'll certainly be able to purchase DV tapes for a while to come), but it's something to keep in mind. FCE deals with the two formats differently as well, and it might be wise to skim over both the section in the User Manual about capturing and the one about the "Log and Transfer" process.
As far as bugginess is concerned, I wouldn't say that one format is prone to more problems than the other. As long as you read up on the capture or ingest process before attempting anything you should be fine.
Finally, keep in mind the fact that FCE transcodes both HDV and AVCHD into the Apple Intermediate Codec upon capture or ingest. AIC usually runs at about 41-50GB per hour, so you'll want to make sure that you have a fast external firewire drive to use as a scratch disk when editing to store your media.

  • What is the best workflow for AVCHD with iMovie/iDVD 09?

I am recording AVCHD video with a Sony HDR-SR11. I don't have a blu-ray burner yet, so I want to create the highest quality DVD's I can from this source video using my MacBook and the software I have (iMovie 09 and iDVD 09).
Currently I am importing the video clips into iMovie 09 at the 1920x1200 setting. After creating a 16:9 movie I choose "Share to Media Browser" and export at the highest setting I see (I think 1280x720, I'm not on the MacBook at the moment).
After a long while this completes and I launch iDVD 09. I drag the movie I exported above into the theme and burn at Professional Quality. After another long wait I have my DVD but I'm quite disappointed with the video quality.
Even taking into account that DVD is not a hi-def disc format it seems like the video quality should be better. Is there a better workflow I should be using with this combination of software? Maybe some way to avoid scaling/compressing the video twice? Or is this as good as it gets with iMovie 09 and iDVD 09? I may have access to iMovie 06, if that would help.
    Thanks,
    Gerald

    3) Share to Media Browser with Best Quality
For folks like me that wonder exactly how did you do this:
(I don't know what Media Browser is yet.)
I did this: (I got some warnings - did you?)
    In iMovie:
Selected my 1280x720 "HD" video in the Project panel,
    Share->Media Browser...
    - if HD is greyed out, you already shared this size to Media Browser, go to next step,
or select "Remove from Media Browser, check HD, click Remove"
    - if HD is not greyed, but is not check marked,
select Computer icon, then uncheck Mobile, Med, and Lrg, leaving only HD checked
With HD checked, Click Publish - watch "Creating the HD movie.."
Bring up iDVD, Select Create a new project, browse for location and enter project name
If Themes at bottom right is not selected (Dark), click it
Double click a theme - for example under Revolution, choose Chapters.
At bottom right, select Media, At top right, select Movies
Under iMovie should be your iMovie project - mine says "My First Project" (I didn't name iMovie proj)
    Select your iMovie Project,
you should see a thumb of your video with dimension, size listed
(movie duration is down at bottom right.)
Drag the thumbnail onto the iDVD preview window (I don't what that window is officially called)
drop it under the theme title "Revolution Chapters" for this example
You should see a running preview of your video with the project name below it.
Important step: Project->Project Info, Under Encoding: select Best or Professional Quality
Ok re-encoding warning, close Proj Info window.
File->Burn DVD... Popup says "Warnings in Project", select Continue Burning
Insert DVD (Apple designed sharp edges on the SuperDrive on purpose?)
    I used Staples 4x DVD-RW first.
Watch process proceed till DVD is ejected...Don't believe "Time remaining: about one minute"
My DVD-R120 player-recorder would not load the disk. It played fine on iMac, a WindowsXP laptop, and a Windows XP desktop. This DVD machine only likes old 1X RW media for some reason. I wish someone made a standalone Blu-Ray recorder/player. I burned a second copy to some gold Sony 1X/2X DVD-RW media, and this disk played fine.
Picture quality is soft compared to HD material, but the moire patterns on some edges is only somewhat reduced over the Share to iDVD version. This Share to Media Browser version is acceptable for folks that won't go to Vimeo or YouTube to see my videos in HD.

    hello,
it is not officially supported. however, it can be done when you write your own makefile. how to call the compiler and necessary flags and so on see the "build results" output of xcode. it's like
    /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.0 -x objective-c -arch i386
and so on. after you created the object files you create the library with the archive tool, like
    ar -crv libwhatever.a Dada.o Bubu.o AnotherOne.o

  • Warning for those with unfinished iDVD 5 projects

If you have an unfinished iDVD project in V5 and it includes media from an iPhoto 5 library there are a couple of steps you'll need to take to keep your project from getting trashed.
iPhoto 6 changes the folder structure of it's library folder drastically. iDVD will not be able to link to files in the library and to do so manually would be impossible unless it was only one or two. So here's what you need to do.
1 - make a backup of your current iPhoto Library folder. Name it "iPhoto6 Library".
2 - when you launch iPhoto 6 the first time, use the Option key and when asked to locate your library select the "iPhoto6 Library" folder.
Now when you launch iDVD 6 and select the unfinished project it will look in the old library folder to find the files and you're off and running. Then when you've completed the project you can trash that iPhoto Library folder to regain space again.

  • Few questions on exporting out with fce 3.5 for web distribution

Hello I have been trolling here for a few months reading up on things and I know my way around a search pretty well I have gotten some of these answers from reading but id like to have my own thread so I can keep it all in one place...
    First..
I run websites that need video's for surfers to be able to view.. these videos are in length from 20 min to 1 hour or longer... now I have figured out that when I render with the h.264 out sorry fce calls it export... I choose the quicktime setting of lan and it seems to be about right for what im used to in high quality from rendering out with pinnacle studio for a wmv or an mpeg.. now heres where I get confused with fce
I see there is a wmv setting to export to.. but when I do it.. it only exports a bit of it...
now these are the formats I want for video...
    .mov
    .wmv
    .mpg
I have compressor but I have no idea on the settings in there and can't find what I need
in those formats I would like to have a
    high
    med
    low
    as far as quality go's
can someone help me out so my life is easier please... in fact I have 50 bucks via paypal if I can get someone get my settings down right maybe even in compressor so I just have to edit... this part always messes with my head when it comes down to render out...
there has to be some editors on here that know excatly what im talking about without having to say it on here... if you want to chat in private you can email me chris (at) themibcorp (dot) com I will give you my ichat name from there maybe you can help me and ill help you with some paypal
I want the video to play on all forms of computers..
our's and the other kind.. LOL

This isn't something someone can decide for you. It's up to you ti make up your mind. Either will do the job. If you want to spend the time to experiment with settings to better suit your media and you know what you're doing and want to spend the money get the more expensive version. If you'll be happy to use the basic presets based on average media and file sizes then get the cheaper version.

  • Aspect ratio issues in iDVD with mov files exported from FCE

Please help. I believe this is an iDVD bug. I have found some relevant discussion of it on online forums - but have not found a solution that works for me. I am looking for a workaround.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1356500&tstart=31
    PROBLEM STATEMENT:
My 4:3 movies, exported from FCE in QT-with-conversion formats (any 4:3 format) - appear in iDVD with gray side-pillars (as expected for 4:3) AND with a black line (letter-boxing) at top and bottom - as would be for 16:9. It appears the aspect ratio is also distorted i.e. 16:9. (The iDVD project is set to 4:3.)
1- A 4:3 mov file exported from FCE using Quicktime Movie format (no conversion) does not have the problem, but I cannot de-interlace the video using this export mode.
    2) A 4:3 mov file exported using QT-with-conversion mode (any 4:3 format) DOES have the problem. I need to use this mode in order to get de-interlace.
(Exception: 640x480 VGA mode does not have the black lines, and it displays correctly in dvd player on my computer screen - but on the TV screen, it crops content from the top and bottom of the movie, so this is not an option.)
    3) In Finder, if you click on mov file exported QT-only (no conversion), it opens in the FCE viewer. If you click on mov file exported in any other 4:3 mode, it opens in Quicktime viewer (i.e. there is absolutely something different in the header/ID of these files.)
    4) All mov files, regardless of export mode, show correctly in Quicktime viewer - no black line, no distortion. The problem does not occur outside of iDvd.
    5) I tried passing the QT-with-conversion mov files through an Inverse-Anamorphicizer (per suggestion on forum - this apparently fixed the problem for some people) but the resulting output mov (i.e. the inverted product) still had the same problem.
I am, so far, left with this trade-off: Give up the de-interlacing, or live with the letter-boxing/ distortion. Neither is acceptable.
I am looking for a workaround:
    1) A way to export de-interlaced 4:3 mov from FCE that shows in correct ratio in iDVD
    2) A way to "convert" / re-head mov file after exported so that it displays corrrectly (inverse-anamorphicize) so that iDVD reads it correctly
    3) Can the mov be de-interlaced after the fact (so I could use QT export without conversion)?
    4) Something besides iDVD to put this together - that doesn't have this problem? (I like and want to use the iDVD menu/theme.)
    5) Other?????
I also notice that all the QT-with-conversion mov files are 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the QT-only mov file, which is valuable and preferable to me. (I don't see any quality difference in the display...)

In the Preview window > top frame > middle button
do you have correct for pixel aspect ratio checked or not?

  • Sources for random effects to use with FCE

Any FCE users out there know of any good sources for random “effects” (not filters) and pre-made generic clips?
Coming from iMoive I'm really excited about the improved control I have with FCE but it doesn’t have some of the generic effects I’m looking for like the 3-2-1 screen at the beginning of a video or overlays where it looks like the film is burning on the light…etc. I need some cool yet affordable plug-ins.
    Any help is appreciated!

archive.org offers some downloadable count-downs ... in "historic" pic quality..
with some painting skills, you're able to create your own in a paint-app and animate it in FCE ...
search for video-libraries on the net, many offer (for $$) DVDs with zillions of usable "movies", fog, fire, water, animatics...
    lately, I stumbled here over
    http://fxhome.com/effectslab/effectslab-overview.html
which allows creation of nice "particle" effects (smoke, fog, fire, bursts, ...)
I'm too more a iM user.. like all these presets... in FCE, you have to think yourself, how is it done, how to set which knobs&sliders to achieve a special, wanted look... much more options, but much more complicated ..

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • Help with converting WMV files to quicktime movies for video ipod.

Is there a way to convert my movies that play with the windows media player to a movie file that Quicktime Pro can use to export to my video ipod?
I am running windows xp, can anyone help??

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.
