No 1x burning with Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A

My 2.7 GHz/Dual Power Mac G5 comes with the Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. I am unable to burn a DVD at 1x. Why would I want to burn at 1x you ask? At lot of DVD Players will only recognize 1x and 2x burned disks. We have the ridiculous situation of having to create DVD's with the Dual G5 and then transferring our creation to an 800 MHz iMac in order to burn at 1x so that people don't return the DVD's. My daughter recently had her PowerBook fixed by Apple. I noticed that part of the fix was installing a Matshita DVD-R UJ-825. That drive is also able to burn at 1x speed. Is it that this Sony model is "speed challanged" or is it just a problem with my drive?
I don't even know if buying 1x and 2x media is a solution with this particular drive. I have also read that there might be a firmware upgrade available for it. Unfortunately, from the directions I read, I would need to remove the drive and use an external USB connection with Virtual PC or install it on a PC and flash there. Are there no other solutions?

There is no official Apple firmware update for your
drive - using non-Apple firmware will void your
drive's warranty.
Regarding your trying to burn 1x: Try another brand
of DVDs and make sure that their speed rating
includes 1x
The same brand I used to burn on the laptop at 1x was used on the G5. It just seems that the Sony drive is "too stupid" (okay tha'ts not a technical term - lol) to listen to Toast when I request a 1x burn. On the Powebook with the non-Sony drive when I tell the software to burn the disk at 1x, it does, taking over 40 minutes. The blank DVD's I'm using are Verbatim 16x that are rated "up to 16x".
Just to make it even more clear, I have no problems burning 16x discs using the Sony drive. They are readable when used on my computer and on very modern DVD players that have DVD drive transports originally designed for PCs. They just won't play, for instance, on my Sony DVP-S500D which is a much older machine. When I burn at 1x on the iMac or Powerbook it plays fine on the S500D.
At the end of the day, if the drive won't burn at 1x what's the difference if Apple voids the warranty on a drive that can't be used for the purpose for which it was intended -- namely the creation of DVD's that will play to a wide range of DVD players.

  • Dual-Layer (DVD+R DL) burn hang with Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A

I have been trying unsuccessfully to burn an imovie project with idvd. Symptoms are some of those described in other topics:
    - idvd goes through all stages and hangs in burn
    - hang is always in the multiplexing phase
    - EncoderServer and ThumbnailServer also hang
    - all wait for a semaphore
I have seen the entries for upgrading the firmware on the Pioneer drive, but did not see anything similar for the Sony. I am using Fuji DVD+R DL disks.
    Any help is much appreciated

This problem has really not been resolved; I have worked around this problem by purchasing Toast, as iDVD has failed miserable on each attempt.

  • Can my SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A write HD DVD content?

I am trying to figure out if the Sony DVD drive/burner in my 2.7 Ghz DP G5 will write HD content with DVD Studio Pro. If so, what media is allowable. Drive model is: SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A. Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming you have DVDSP version 4.0.3 or higher, you can create HD DVDs on regular DVD-R or DVD+R discs. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
    1) In DVDSP, you'll need to set your HD DVD disc up as red laser.
    2) The red laser discs you create will not meet the official HD DVD spec for red laser discs, and as such, may not play in some HD DVD players. You should be able to play them fine using Apple's DVD Player using version 4.6.5 or later.
    3) These discs will not play at all in a standard definition DVD player.
The DVDSP 4.1 manual, on page 20, states:
"In addition to blue laser based DVD media, an HD project’s DVD video zone can be written to DVD media based on the red lasers used by traditional DVDs. (The obvious limitation is that you will not be able to fit as much video data on the disc.)
Important: SD-based DVD players are not able to play DVD projects containing HD content, whether they are on red or blue laser media. Additionally, only HD projects on special 3x DVD-ROM red laser media are officially supported in the HD DVD specification. You can burn HD projects to traditional red laser media on your system; however, the discs might not play in all HD DVD players."

  • Error message when burning to Sony DVD-r discs

Just bought 200 Sony DVD-R printable discs from Costco, and I am trying to burn a 15 minute short film in DVD studio pro. The DVD just spins in Formatting and I get this message:The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error.
I have burned this same film many times with my Nexxtech DVD's and it works fine, but the Sony discs don't seem to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    D-

Try burning at the lowest possible speed (probably DVDx2) and see if they work.

  • Trouble burning with OneStep DVD

I've been archiving a number of my Digital hi-8 tapes onto DVD using OneStep DVD with no problems until recently. The last few hi-8 tapes I want to archive onto DVD do not start immediately so OneStep seems to think there is no information on the tape and will not burn a DVD. I get an error message as follows: "Nothing Captured. No video has been captured. Aborting OneStep DVD creation."
I've been trying to figure out a way to "trick" OneStep DVD into not rewinding the tape on my camera all the way so it will start when the video actually begins on the tape but I can't figure out how to make it work because it keeps rewinding regardless. I have too many tapes to create actual DVD projects so OneStep is the way for me to go at this point. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

    Hi Len;
I actually tried this approach but, for some reason, I get an "out of memory" message when I take this route. It's worked fine (with other movies of the same type) when I am able to burn straight to DVD but gives me grief when I try to burn the very same movie from iMovie. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

  • Replace W520 Sony Optiarc AD-7710H DVD Burner with Sony Optiarc BD-5750H Blu-ray Burner?

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives.
Does anyone know whether the front bezel on the W520 is the same for the two Sony Optiarc drives mentioned above?  If not, which Blu-ray burners can accept the W520 front bezel from the Sony Optiarc AD-7710H, which is the drive my machine shipped with?
    Thank you!

I think you swap the bezels. I did with mine.

  • Inability to play on Mac DVD burned on Sony DVD Recorder

I burned an old VHS onto a Sony DVR-R disc, using a Sony RDR-VX560 Recorder. The resultant DVD played fine on the Sony TV set, but I could not play it on my Mac. On insertion into the Mac, I got a Disc icon titled: "SonyDVD_RECORDERVOLUME" but the Disc did not open automatically, as usual, nor would it open in the DVD Player app. Upon double clicking the icon a screen w/the DVD title as its name appeared w/a folder titled "DVD_RTAV" opened, w/2 items enclosed. The 2 enclosed folders, were titled "VR_MOVIE.VRO" and "VR_MANGR.IFO" respectively. Upon opening the folders, each produced a DVD Player app msg: "There was a problem opening the media. The media type is not supported." This was my 1st attempt at dubbing though I have been successfully burning and playing the same Sony discs on this Mac and TV for some time w/minimal problems. I'm at wits end trying to resolve this problem and will certainly appreciate any help. Many Thanks.

Did you finalise the disc on the Sony?
PS - This has nothing to do with iDVD, which is the software used to create DVD's on a Mac. You have posted the question in the wrong forum really, it would be better to post the question here :

  • Conflict with Sony DVD RW DRU-700A...............??

I have a Creative Audigy 2 on XP Home.........using the Creative Organizer, I can't burn my cd because in Strument/Options/Burn...NO CD RW is displayed.....it's strange because I can burn my cd with Nero....... I already installed the latest driver for Audigy 2 and for Sony........but the problem remain....What can I do?
    Thanks

This does work, I had trouble with both my sony's 540a and a 70a-dl.
Also if you have NeoTV .0, this program when started will take out your dri'ves. It seems to be a burning engin conflict of some kind. I just found out about it myself. I can reproduce the problem over and over again. I have not found an coilation yet between SB and NeoTV, but the problem goes away when I uninstall it..so there is some kind of conflict their.
    Good Luck

  • Disk Utility won't burn with external dvd burner!!! HELP?!?!?!

    Hello anyone/everyone!
I need some help, I'm trying to burn a file using the disk utility. Only thing is that the disk utility wants to used the drive installed on my iBook (combo drive) and not my external DVD drive! I couldn't find a way to be able to chnage the default burner, and I was hoping that someone/anyone could help me out? The file is too large for a regular 800mb disk so I have to use the external dvd burner. Help me please oh wise-ones?!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Find out if the external burner is Patchburn compatible. If it is, then apply it from http://www.patchburn.de/
If not, I'd sell the external burner and get one that is compatible like those from http://www.macsales.com/

  • Certain Music CDs Not Recognized by SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A Superdrive

Subject drive recognizes all DVDs, CD-ROMs, and some (but not all) commercial Compact Discs. Case in point is "Diva," published by Nemo Studios under license to Angel Records. This is an audio collection of Sarah Brightman's performances. Inserting this disc (and probably others) into my PM Dual CPU 2.7 GHz G5 results in "spin-stop-spin-stop-eject." No icon appears; the disc will not mount. I have verified that other CDs mount and their contents will play in iTunes with no problem. The disc in question also mounts, opens, and plays perfectly on my wife's Windows PC.
The firmware of my Sony drive is "KAS7." Is there an available update? Could that be the problem?

"as I wrote above, after it failed to mount, my wife put it in her Fry's PC CD drive and it played perfectly. "
Mac drives are more sensitive than the pc drives. My pc drive plays anything including cracked CD/DVDs.
Again, try a drive cleaner. Another thing you can try is to repair permissions & restart your computer. Sometimes that is all it takes.

  • Replace SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A

What's the best G5compatible DL burner to use to replace the Superdrive I now have? And is there a link to the replacement/installation process?

The drive Drew recommends is a great choice. I have the same one, except it is the internal version. Also purchased from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR111DBK/
Works flawlessly in my G5 (and about 1/3 of the price of the external!).

    Good luck.

  • Does Superdrive stop seeing already burned Sony DVD-RW's?

I use .mac's Backup program with Sony DVD-RW's. Out of a box of ten, I've had 3 that Backup initially "sees", but then when it tries to burn, the burn fails.
After that, I can't get Disk Utility or Finder to "see" the DVD-RW. Note, the DVD-RW's in question were successfully burned at least once before this occurs.
Is there anyway to restore or erase the DVD-RW's so that Finder/Disk Utility and/or .mac Backup can use them?
Or do I have an extraordinarily bad box of discs?
    iBook G4 1Ghz/iMac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

No doubt you shouldn't be having this problem.
But never rule out the DVD media you are using.
Sorry to say there is a huge difference in quality and compatiblity.
I would try something like Maxell 16X DVD-R media
I always read the back of the Jewel cases and make sure they will burn 1X through 16X this way it will burn on just about anything out there. There quality is top notch and you can buy them in a 3 pack for under $4.00
See if that helps. Cheers Don
