No 3840x2160 option on R9-280X

I've been using the MSI R9-280X 3G Gaming for almost 2 years with 1920x1200 res.
I just bought a Samsung UHD monitor (UHD590) and connected it to the gfx card with a DPv1.2a cable.
However despite reinstalling the AMD drivers (15.4beta), I can only see up to 2560x1440 in the display options (desktop properties) on my Windows8.1
CCC Panel Info shows max res 3840x2160, but the drop down to choose resolution just doesn't have that option.
I'm pretty sure the card supports UHD, but what do I need to do to change the resolution to 3840x2160@60hz ?

yes it supports that but its may not be reporting that as its a manual setting for compatibility in the screans GUI for use with older cards that do not support 4K! (Please Just have a look for it)
just go into your 4k panels settings and see if its set at 3840x2160 (it reports its resolution) its like that for a reason for old cards that cannot output 4K for compatibility to overide the auto detection of 4k so you actually have to set it up in the panel as a card that cannot output 4k will just black screen and may need a recovery so they default it lower eg 2560x1440!
turn off the power to the screen and turn it back on and see if it pops up a set resolution box and chose the supported resolution there! if not search the menu's for it!

• 13rMBP Mid2014 HDMI does not have 3840x2160 option?

Does the rMBP 13" Mid2014 HDMI connection allow 3840x2160 resolution?
Support article: HT6008 says it should for this model.
You can use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs at the following resolutions and refresh rates via the built-in HDMI port.
3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz refresh rate
4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)
I have it directly connected to my HDTV via HDMI cable and selected 24hz as I know it does not support 60hz.
Only offers 1080p....
I tried a miniDP to HDMI adapter and that did not work and it used to. I think this adapter may not support 4k or be an active adapter.
Just ordered an active adapter that should work, but I am believe it should work through HDMI port on this unit based on HT6008 article.

I just found another thread that has my same exact issue.

Will follow that thread for resolution.

• MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB SWITCH DVI TO HDMI???

Hi All
It has been quite a while since I have been in this forum, My old profile seems to have vanished maybe due to lack of login so I have re-registered
I am still running my trusty old 990FXA-GD80 mobo (see sig) & today I just received an MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB graphics card, I installed it & did not get any signal via the HDMI output so I found a VGA cable & DVI adaptor & connected it to the TV (Sanyo 42" LCDd) via the VGA input & it booted up fine & I was able to install the drivers & AMD catalyst etc software
I typically run MSI Geforce graphics cards so the AMD Radeon in depth options & menus etc is fairly new to me, Normally I would connect a GTX card & it would simply recognise the HDMI connected monitor or TV & all would be good but for some reason I am unable to get the HDMI output going at all?
I have both cables - DVI to VGA & HDMI to HDMI connected between the TV & graphics card
I might just have to buy a DVI to HDMI cable in the morning & see how that goes?
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Nichrome
Yes it is currently connected to a 42" LCD TV, It may not be easy to get hold of a monitor with HDMI input on loan to test either
I will be able to connect my brand new LG 60" LED LCD 3D (60LB6500) TV tomorrow & see if the HDMI will work that way? (The new LG only has HDMI inputs as far as I can find but I will know for sure tomorrow?) It may just be the older 42" LCD TV not playing the game, If the new LG 60" does not work via the HDMI output then its onto the other options........>
The previous Geforce drivers & software was completely removed before the Radeon install but I do agree it may be an issue & a clean install via driver fusion might be needed?
The current or latest drivers I could find is> 14.501.1003
I originally installed the latest drivers from the MSI site & could not find the option to connect via HDMI so I went to the AMD site hoping to fix the issue with new AMD drivers
The audio runs direct to a receiver via SPDIF so for me there is no real need for HDMI output unless it is going to be a better quality option?
From what I have read the quality or performance should not really be any different between the DVI & HDMI output so it should not be any major trouble to buy a DVI to HDMI cable? Any opinions

• R9 280X Max HDMI Resolution?

I have ordered an MSI R9 280X GAMING 3G card to run a 4K TV as a monitor at 3840x2160. I thought all of the R9 280X cards were able to output this 4K 3840x2160 resolution on the HDMI port. But, based on the specifications list on MSI's website for this card the max resolution is 2560x1600. Which is correct?

These are both slightly cheaper than the Thunderbolt Screen from Apple which Ive had and loved.

Hi there,
According to the tech specs, your computer has a Mini DisplayPort that supports DVI and VGA ouput with the use of an optional video adapter. With that being said, the computer should be able to output video to monitors that support either DVI or VGA input. You can find a few of the Mini DisplayPort adapters in this section of the Apple Online Store.

• [SOLVED]Radeon R9 280x Glamor problems (video tearing, error messages)

When switching from Catalyst to xf86-video-ati, a few problems occurred.
I tried to enable EXA rendering by setting the option in my Xorg.conf, but I got the message that EXA isn't supported on my card and that Glamor will be used. I'm fine with using Glamor, but using it gives me some weird problems. For instance, when I play a video, the top 5% of the screen has horizontal tearing, as explained in this bug report: https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/sh … i?id=78717
It seems unfortunately that there is no way to solve the video tearing problem with Glamor. I tried playing my videos with mpv and vlc and with different video output options (xv, gl-hq, gl, vdpau), but they all gave horizontal tearing in the top 5% of the screen.
When playing a video or running glxgears, I get the following error messages:
radeon: Failed to allocate a buffer:
radeon: size : 0 bytes
radeon: alignment : 4096 bytes
radeon: domains : 4
And this goes on and on when running the program.
There are also messages appearing in dmesg when those problems occur:
[ 1587.499789] [drm:radeon_gem_object_create] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (0, 6, 4096, -22)
[ 1587.516597] [TTM] Illegal buffer object size
[ 1587.516606] [TTM] Illegal buffer object size
My full xorg.log:
http://pastebin.com/Jpi3wF7H
I understand that solving tearing is not a priority now with Glamor, but at least I want to get rid of the error messages. Any ideas?

Sorry for the late reply, but I happen to have recently built a similar setup (Arch Linux + Radeon R9 280) and I'm also getting the "Failed to allocate a buffer" (of size 0) messages whenever I run something that seems to use the radeonsi driver (i.e. games, 3D, shaders...). However, I do not have the video tearing issue, and I don't get the messages when playing a video either (well, at least not with VLC, which is the only software I've tried for this). I can't really help you more with the video tearing issue, but I filed a specific bug report for the "Failed to allocate a buffer" messages here :

Thanks for reporting the bug! I hope that there'll be a solution for both of us.
Good to hear that you don't see tearing. It only happens on fast sequences.

• Temporary Solution for screen flicker r9 280x

After performing various tests I've fixed the screen flickering on my msi r9 280x, I hope this can be useful for all here with the same problem and with different patterns of R9 family, that I have running on my pc and I have not had even the slightest flicker playing youtube videos where the problem became acute.
1 open the task manager and end the process Catalyst Control Center: Monitoring program and also the Catalyst Control Center: Host Application.
2 Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE right click on the Profiles file, in the end the general menu select Read only, accept.
3 Again right click and select edit, and file searches within these lines
<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6798&SUBSYS_27751462&REV_00_4&320ACFF0&0&0010A">
<Property name = "Want_0" value = "850" /> CHANGE THIS VALUE OF 850 FOR 900 only
<Property name = "Want_1" value = "1200" />
This value changes the low voltage in 2d (resting) 0.85va 0.90v
4 then go to the File menu, select Save As, in writing profiles.xml nombe save.
5 Again right click on the profiles file saved on the desktop and select read-only
6 Go back to Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE and remove the profiles file.
7 copy or cut and paste into C profiles saved file to your desktop: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE.
8 Finally go to task manager and then click on file to run new task, we write MOM.exe there and ready, restart the pc for security.
to ensure that its voltage is at 0.90v use GPUZ and check the end of the sensors tab.
note that if we use the application msi afterburner not enable Unofficial Overclocking mode option because in themselves to have it on and change the clocks video card testing restores the voltage 0.85V.
when I play some games I use msi afterburner like msi Gaming app since I have experienced that without the Gaming app clocks fall then at 300mhz after making this process voltage, I recommend you use to see, as an example in msi afterburner I apply the core clocks of vga 1100 and Gaming active app one of the two profiles, the Gaming mode or the mode Oc down and watches only parameters selecionados 1020 mhz or 1050 mhz vga respectively when accelerating up to 1100 mhz selected msi afterburner.
I hope this is useful that I share as many as we can not believe that to date no actions are taken to this problem taking into account the value of the video card. Maybe this and many what they knew, but there will be many who do not and those like me tried in many ways to carry it out and not succeeded because that's how I achieved step by step and fully functional, sorry if some way I can not explain to clearly as I do not speak English and I'm using a translator, and hopefully serve them again, I just do it to help them all and hopefully once and for all of the annoying screen flicker go ...

I am giving everyone I find MY fix. Let me know if this post I put on another thread does it.
"I know this has been longer than 60 days. However I just wanted to post my fix for others in case its searched for. This has been so frustrating to figure out. My fix has been a variety of things such as clean installs of the drivers MANY MANY times. The final time I reinstalled the ATI's CCC driver 14.7 beta. I noticed that I unknowingly (by ignorance not action) installed MSI's version of CCC from there website as well. After (not) installing MSI's version on top it seemed to help but the clock speeds still fluctuated from 300MHZ- to the max 1020MHz continuously. After looking in the CCC I saw an option that caught my eye. "Alternate DVI Operational Mode" is checked by default on both screens options. So I unchecked it...applied changes.... VIOLA no more flicker and clock speeds have been stable for the past 5 hours. I however have not restarted my computer for fear it will return and I throw the computer out the window. This is atleast worth an attempt if you have the dreaded "Flicker" of the R9 280X.
For information my setup is as follows:
M/B- MSI A88X-G45 Gaming
processor: AMD A10-7850K (AMD A series black edition APU) w/ r7 200 series
2 (cheap @ around 120$ each) Monitors- Acer (G246HL) and LG (22M45) 60Hz running at 1920x 1080
PSU: (Cheap 35$) 600W
HDD: 1TB (Master) and 2TB (slave) seagate SATA drives
VIDEO: MSI R9 280x 3gb Video card
Issue noticed: Flicker when running either one or two (Extended screen) monitors usually while browsing, schoolwork, or watching netflix (2D actions???) and less but still during StarCraft 2 game play. tried just about every forums suggestions except the one about changing a register key profile.
Outcome of above suggestions: Relief....so far (6 hours later)"
"Alternate DVI Operational Mode"
where I can find that option ?

Those are mostly HEC made units and are garbage psu's....your lucky you haven't blown up other components at this point! That's not a exaggerated joke either. Your flipping a coin every time you turn that thing on. Get that thing outta your pc NOW....its probably in reality a 400 -450 watt psu if your lucky.
definitely your power supply i had the same issue with a winpower 850w cause its a generic HEC power supply and it probable cost less then £30 effectively you getting about 400-500w and thats not enough to power 1 R9 280x let alone Xfire.
since i bought EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 Power Supply i have had no issues at all everthing is smooth..
oh and don't get a 650w neither as thats not enough to power x2 in crossfire

• Sound from new MSI R9 280X - coil whine? RMA?

Hey all.
Just trying to determine if the sounds coming from my new PC's video card are normal or not. Here is my build: au.pcpartpicker.com/p/1XKQb
I hear this sound when running what I would consider low end graphics tests as well as when I booted up BF4 for the first time last night. Graphics automatically set to high.
I've recorded a few sounds of the 'squeals' that I hope are good enough for people to make a judgement. The sound seems to be coming from the part of the video card where the power connects. I have reseated the card and tried using a different power cable. It is not an issue with the fans.
First is a capture from a test in Unigine Valley:
soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening
Second is a sound from loading Team Fortress 2 and then moving the mouse a little bit.
soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening-1
Interestingly, when I enable Vsync in Team Fortress 2 the sound disappears. If I enable Vysnc in the Unigine Valley test, it does not make a difference.
I also ran a test in the 3D Mark(did not have the option to change anything as it is only a demo) and the Ice Storm made the worst sounds from the card:
soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm
soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm-2
Considering buying 3DMark so I can muck around with the settings a bit and see which cases I hear the sound and which i don’t
I also loaded up BF4 last night and got the noise with VSYNC enabled or disabled(can record if needed). Also the same issue in Deus Ex, makes sounds with Vysnc on and off.
Can anyone with a MSI R9 280x confirm if this is normal? Is this coil whine? Reviews on newegg seem to indicate a lot of people are getting similar sounds and I’m not really thrilled with this considering it’s a brand new card and the first time I've built and i can hear this through the case and fans.
Could it be something that can be fixed by modifying voltage settings (as it seems to come from the power connection)? Or does this require an RMA?
Any advice appreciated.

so your parts are:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF XM (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Antec HCG M 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - OEM (64-bit)
ok there are 2 causes of coil whine and odd noises so be totally sure its coming from the Graphics card itself by getting your mike directly over it and move it around and test other parts for noise as sometimes its The PSU (Power Supply Unit) that is doing it or it can cause it as yours is a split +12v unit (+12V1@40A, +12V2@40A) it may be the cause as Antec at times do not make reliable units (those rating is has for 2 rails look to me as being fake as they exceed its power limits combined (12v x 80A = 960W so it can probably do 40A on one but then the other will be terrible at 22.5A as it looks like there doing virtual +12v rails with 40A OCP fuses)) so its suspect as it may not be behaving well!

• [MSI P67A-GD65]. Quick and dirty question: Is there a Windows 8 option?

Hello everyone,
I have a P67A-GD65(b3), with a Sapphire R9 280x with a GOP Bios. Windows 8.1 are installed in a gpt partition, the Windows Boot Manager is booting the machine. I have the latest beta bios installed (E7681.443).
My question is: Does this bios have the Windows 8 options (like fast/secure boot etc)?
I can't seem to be able to find them anywhere.
Are these options supported with another bios?
The bios is flashed using the forum tool, and all the relevant instructions (remove power, reset etc).
Thanks in advance.

• MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming artifacts and freezes

I just bought a 2 month old MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming card. After I installed the card my PC didn't POST, so I went into the bios and resetted everything to default. Then again my computer didn't POST. I checked the bios switch on the graphics card, it was set on position 2, I switched it to position 1 and my computer booted into Windows. I installed the catalyst drivers and started to play some games. It went quite bad, I had artifacts, game crashes and overall bad performance.
I read out the bios version on switch position 1 (the one that does work), this is ver. 015.040.000.000.003435. I flashed the bad bios version on switch 2 which was version 015.040.000.003.003435 with 015.040.000.000.003435.
After the flash I was able to boot windows on switch 2. Still I do have performance issues with games, like artifacts and game crashes.
My S/N is 602-V277-38SB1312093272.
Can you guys help me out with this?
Thanks in advance!

Alright, I tried to flash my bios to E7681.430 with the USB DOS tool available on this forum. After my computer booted the USB stick, I was prompted to do a memtest. It hanged, so I wasn't be able to memtest before flashing.
I download the last version of memtest86+ 5.01 and tried to memtest test 5 and 7 for 20 loops, it passed with 0 errors, so it seems my system is stable. Then I copied your provided BIOS to my USB stick and tried to flash it with M-flash in my current BIOS. M-flash wasn't able to recognize this file, so I won't be able to flash it.
So with not be able to pass memtest (only my own downloaded memtest86+ v5.01) from the MSI Bios Flash Dos tool and not be able to flash a new bios with M-flash. I'm not sure what to do next, I won't try the Windows flash option, because of this https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=177335.0 topic.
On the other hand I looks like I need to update to version 4.3 for me being able to use the r9 280x card.
Can you give me any advice about what steps to take next? Thanks in advance.
