No 5.1 audio from ATV

i,ve seen this discussed everywhere but cannot find a solution. Ihave an ATV2 hooked to my yamaha receiver with toslink and an ATV3 hooked to a seperate yamaha receiver in my basement hooked via HDMI.  I can't stream any 5.1 audio through the ATV.  The receivers indicate the incoming audio signals as 2 channel only.  I have tried previews from ATV Movies with the DD symbol but only get 2 channel.  I have a copy of Jump Street 21 imported in itunes with 5.1 AAC audio track and still get only 2 channel.  I checked that movie with Macmedia and it indicates only 1 audio track and 6 channels.  If I use my Macbook pro with thunderbolt to HDMI i am able to get 6 channel audio from the same movie.  I have the Dolby digital set to on on my ATV.  Please help I am really frustrated by this.

I have an HDMI connection to the receiver and on to the TV - but there is non audio from my Apple TV.  Not for movies, music, YouTube etc.   I have checked all of the connections and the video is xlnt.  Have also toggled thru all possible Dolby/Audio combinations in settings.  Help!  Any suggestions?

    Hello again Parker -
The basic setup is Digital Cable Box, DVD Player, Denon Receiver/Amp and TV Monitor.  To that I added the Apple TV.  The Receiver only has two HDMI IN slots (one for cable and one for the DVD) and one out to the Monitor.
[I bought a switcher to toggle the DVD and the AppleTV back and forth but just disconnected the DVD to simplify when I ran in to trouble.]
    So now I have:
HDMI from the Cable Box to the Receiver
HDMI from the Apple TV to the Receiver (in the old DVD slot which always worked well)
HDMI from the Receiver to the Monitor
RCA's from the Receiver to the Subwoofer and the other speakers
In addition I have some backup connections:
S-Video, Optical Audio and L/R RCA's from the Cable Box to the Receiver
S-Video from the Receiver to the Monitor
    Wait - JUST FOUND IT!
By going thru the excercise to track all of the connections per your suggestion, I found an anomaly when I switched Receiver sockets for the HDMI links.  The video moved but the audio didn't.  Turns out the monitor was using the optical audio feed from the receiver.  So I disconnected the optical audio and the monitor automatically switched to the HDMI audio feed!   Looked promising...
So I first connected an optical audio feed from the ATV to the receiver - Audio!  Then I pulled it, but the audio didn't switch to the HDMI feed.  It stopped.  Would be OK if all I was going to use is the ATV, but I need the DVD player too and I can't use a switcher to toggle between them if I have to unplug the optical audio each time.
This is becoming a career!  Any suggestions?

  • How can I stream audio from Apple TV 2 to Airport Express speakers.

how can I stream audio from Apple TV 2 to Airport Express speakers.
I have LCD projector on one wall and connected ATV to it via HDMI.
Speakers on the other wall and connected to APXpress.

To be honest the times we've wanted to have music from more than one set of speakers, I've usually used my mac's iTunes library and controlled it either from the mac or from my phone, since they're not really the times we have any TV on anyway. I've tested AirTunes from the Apple TV but can't recall whether it worked with content from a streaming library.
Now I've got something to do.

  • Stream Video/Audio from One room to a TV with Apple TV

    Hi rafromffx,
You can use AirPlay to stream content from an iPad to your Apple TV. See this article for how to do it and the requirements -

  • Play Audio through ATV with my HDTV off?

I've searched the threads without too much luck on this topic. I don't have an ATV yet, but I plan to run an HDMI cable from the ATV to my TV. I also plan to run a toslink optical audio cable from the ATV to an available input on my stereo receiver.
Can someone confirm if I can kick off a playlist from ATV on my HDTV, but then shut the darned TV off and listen to the music through my receiver? I don't want to needlessly burn my TV out when I just want to listen to tunes.
    Thanks for your help.

It works. I use optical digital to my Yamaha and turn off my HDMI connected Toshiba. I've even sent Apple a suggestion that they should support a remote control sequence that justs starts a shuffle play without the need to turn on the monitor to go through menus.
BTW, if you always leave the TV in the same menu state when you put it in standby then just entering the remote buttons as if you were seeing the menu on the monitor does work, without actually turning the monitor on.

  • How do I get analog audio from my apple TV 2nd generation?

I am trying to find a solution to getting an analog (RCA stereo) audio output from my 2nd gen AppleTV to my Onkyo receiver so that I can listen to audio from it on my "B" (outdoor zone 2) speakers. Unfortunately the receiver only accepts anaLog input for the zone 2 speakers. The 2nd generation AppleTV only outputs digital audio. Kind of a pickle. The only solution I've found so far is a pricey digital to analog converter that costs more than the ATV! I have no idea if this will even work, or still output sound through the HDMI cable at the same time.
Anyone out there have any advice or suggestions? Any and all help would be most appreciated as Apple tech support can be very unhelpful without paying for the support plan.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Thanks so much for the quick responses! I've just ordered a DAC from B&H made by Gefen that should do the job. I opted not to get the one that decodes Dolby Digital as I only intend to listen to music on my Zone 2 speakers that are located outside on the back porch. However they do make one that would be great for those needing DD decoding, and I am told they corrected the popping sound when changes sources or channels.
I could have bought a much more expensive receiver, but I feel that a have a stellar system that is up to date with almost all of the new technology. This will all change in 5 years I am sure! At least for now I am all hooked up with HDMI and am receiving the best in picture and sound, with the exception of my "B" speakers being analog. No biggie.
I'm pretty happy with my Apple TV2 with except for the occasional wi-fi glitch and the lack of Pandora.
    Thanks again for the replies!

  • Cannot Airplay Audio to ATV

I have a 2011 MBA on OSX 10.8.2 and an ATV2, both up to date.
I have previously used Airplay to stream audio to the ATV, but it is no longer working.
    The method I use is:
option + click the volume icon and selecting the ATV as an output source.
    OR
Preferences -> audio -> select ATV as AIrplay outdio output source.
Now when I go to click either of those options, OSX reverts the choice back to "Internal Speakers".
It does not display an error message, or error audio.
I can still airplay audio and video, or only audio via my iPhone 5 to the ATV, but not from the MBA.
I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction, thanks!

After posting this I found other discussions that confirm ATV can only be used as a destination for Airplay, not a source. Lame. It seems odd that Apple offers no wireless solution for audio when using ATV to stream content from the cloud.

  • How Do I Transmit Audio from My 2008 MacBook Pro to My 2011 Samsung HDTV?

    Hello,
I'm trying to transmit audio from my 2008 late model MacBook Pro to my 2011 Samsung HDTV.  My MacBook's Model Identifier is MacBook Pro 4,1 (ancient, I know).  I purchased this DVI to HDMI cable which does a beautiful job of transmitting the video to my HDTV, but no audio (as advertised): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E8SY5Q/ref=oh_o02_s01_i00_details   HELP!!
    Thanks very much.

I figured it out!  I plugged in my 3.5MM auxillary cable I use to plug my iPhone into car stereo jacks from the headphones port on my MPB to the "PC/DVI Audio In" on the back of my Samsung HDTV and voila! It worked! No additional cables (other than these two). No upgrading OS.  Yay!
    Here's the auxillary cable:  http://www.amazon.com/AUDIO-3-5MM-JACK-AUXILIARY-CABLE/dp/B002Q3K0QS/ref=sr_1_1? ie=UTF8&qid=1330576344&sr=8-1
This looks like a great workaround to the MPB to HDTV audio problem!  Hopefully my geek status is still intact.  W00T!
When in doubt, try all the cables you have in all the different ports.  AV hasn't changed much over the years and you can often rig things to work with what you already have.  Yay for keeping cables out of landfills and repurposing!

  • When I upload audio from itunes into my imovie project, it does not show all of the track?

Hi, I have opened a new project in imovie - I have uploaded 200 photos into the project to make a Comic Book movie!
this project is 7 mins and 8 seconds long - the exact length of the audio track that I want to play during the movie!
I have selected the music by clicking the musical note button in imovie, which open up my itunes library and displays the track I want to use that is 7 mins and 8 seconds long.
When I click and drag my MP3 audio from itunes into my imovie project, i only plays the first 5 mins & 33 seconds; leaving my project in silence for the final 1 min & 3 seconds????
I have not added markers, there are no fade ins or fade outs - only the first 5 min & 33 seconds or a 7 min & 8 seconds MP3 Audio track???
I have spent 10 hours trying to rectify this problem.......
can anyone help me with this problem

  • Delete unused audio from GB sessions from hard disk

I would like to clear the unused audio from many Garage Band sessions from my hard disk. When audio is recorded in GB where is it stored?
    Thanks
Mac OS X 10.4.11 MacBook 2 Ghz Intel Core duo
    Garage Band 3.0.4 (104.7)

Normally, GB does a pretty good housekeeping job with the audio files: If you are not using a recording at all in you project, it gets deleted next time you save your project. (That means: not using even a fraction of a second - otherwise the whole audio is kept, since GB's edits are non-destructive.)
Having said that - if you want to check, the audio recordings are in a folder inside the project package: ctrl-click the project in the Finder, select "show package content", and look inside the media folder. Be careful - deleting stuff from that folder that you think the project isn't using might confuse GB.

  • How can i stream video and audio from macbook air to my tv?

how can i stream video and audio from macbook air to my tv?

Wirelessly: you need an AirPlay - enabled device such as an AppleTV.
Wired: if your TV has an HDMI port, you need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter such as this one:
Mini DisplayPort to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
If your TV does not have an HDMI port you will need a converter that will convert HDMI input to whatever input your TV requires.

  • Video/Audio from new macbook to HD TV?

So, I'm wondering how i can connect the new MacBook to my HD TV which supports HDMI. Can i connect a mini DisplayPort/HDMI adapter and get both video and audio into my TV?
I haven't seen any adapters of that kind in Apple Store.
Is there perhaps another way to archive this?

Barring some other adapter being released, either by Apple or a third party, you'd get the Mini Display Port to DVI adapter and then use a DVI to HDMI adapter/cable. You'll also need to connect the audio to the TV separately, so check to make sure your TV will allow audio from a different input when using the HDMI input for video; not all do.
