No adequate multiroom audio solution in the market yet?

I've tried to figure out whether to continue with Airplay or go for Sonos. Both have unfortunately pretty big shortcoming, even if money is not an issue. There just doesn't seem to be a suitable product in the market.
Airplay enabled speakers or the new small wireless amps that you can hook up to older wired speakers seem like a fairly good solution. But I would definitely want to stream the same music service to multiple speaker pairs simultaneously, and that's just not possible. 99% of my listening is via Spotify so using iTunes library with an app doesn't cut it all. There's obviously no going back to library, content is king, no point in trying to fight this. If I'm throwing a party I want to stream wirelessly to at least three areas: living room, kitchen, terrace AND if I want to, just use 1-2 of these areas. For these purposes I could even live without the ability to stream different music to the abovementioned areas simultaneously, because I don't really need that (although from architecture point of view, this should obviously be part of the package).
Sonos gives you that, BUT, and this is a huge but, Sonos strips all the apps of the cool features, the most important being playlists. My music consumption has totally changed through the discovery playlists as you can all the time find something new, fresh and cool to consume. Finding new stuff through playlists consists about 50% of my music listening. So basically I've ruled Sonos out and am unhappy with Airplay.
The only sensible way to fix this is to develop the Airplay platform, to have a multiroom capability as a universal, standard feature, available for all audio services. In my opinion Apple has the key to this since the Sonos product philosophy is - despite the really cool multiroom functionalities - fundamentally flawed when it comes to wanting to control the UI.
What am I going to do? Go partly analog I guess for now. I need an amplifier where I can connect my Airport Express, and then multiple (3) Speaker pairs, either active or passive traditional speakers. Then, as clumsy as it sounds, I will use the amplifier remote to control switches for the speaker pairs.
For the kids' rooms they can have their own Airplay enabled speaker pairs where the can stream their own stuff when they want.
Can someone come up with a better set-up? I would really appreciate it, if you could.

Thank you for your effort Max, I am familiar with Whaale but since I don't really use much libraries at all - it's almost all streaming - I will probably skip Whaale and go with my original thought, which is actually pretty much what you described in your earlier post.
That is Amplifier/home theater system connected with airport, with multiple, wired speaker pair options behind amplifier switches. I already have an amp that has switches for two pairs so I'll start with that and wire my kitchen. I really wanted to fix something without wires, but it's just not possible if you want to meet all the "must have" requirements I have. Sounds crazy, but this seems to be the only way to get one Spotify song streamed to at least four speakers simultaneously and have the option to turn off either of the speaker pairs if need be.
