No AirDrop on MacBook Air 2008

On my MacBook Air is no AirDrop available in the Finder. I heard that some Wifi Firmware Versions aren't compatible with AirDrop, I have: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.36.11) Any idea, why this doesn't work?

If you are going to DIY iFixit has lots of Guides, tools and Parts. Once you get the back cover off on the bottom of the display you will see a manufacturer's part number....(for example: B133EW03 V.1 - Note may not be your part number-just for recognition) once you have the part number Google Shopping will help you find compatible or exact matches.

  • Installed new hdd in MacBook Air 2008, question folder and forbidden sign in screen, what to do?

    Hello
I installed new hard drive to my MacBook Air 2008 and when I try to install lion/snow leopard/ mavericks it won't show up the disk. I can't find the hard drive.
I don't now what to do. I tried everything. I spoke with a guy in macsupport here in Sweden and he said I have to buy snow leopard and install it from the original dvd in order for computer to format. My computer is old like I said its from 2008. I've never update it or upgrade. This is first time. It laid in storage for three years so I decide it to use it again but hdd was damaged so I had to change it, and now all I get is flashing question folder and forbidden sign, you know the sign for auto traffic.
Is it true that the only way to restore or to find the new hdd or to boot the question mark and forbidden sign marks by installing osx from its original dvd or buy snow leopard?
After I spoke with the guy from Mac support, I got little suspicious so I spoke to another one and he told me all I need to do is format hdd with the help of a sata hdd cable with help of another macbook and then I was good to go.
    What do u think?
Should I buy snow leopard or can I burn it from my sister computer?

I first would try Target Disk Mode to format and install an OSX on the new storage drive.

You will need a OSX source that is compatible with the MBA.  If you have the original, use that.

How to replace hard drive on MacBook Air 2008 with SSD, and with which hard drive?

  • New macbook air (2008) hinge installed; is this new hinge the same or a revision to address the problem? What should I afford to prevent a repeat of this?

I recently had my first macbook air (2008)'s hinge replaced by Apple after I found out about the quality program apple had for the supposedly weak hinges (had no idea until a genius happened to tell me about it while discussing my newest purchase (the new MBA); I use my old air as a backup anyhow).
My concern is whether or not this replacement Apple installed has been revised to address durability issues (i.e. a redesigned hinge) or simply the exact replacement hinge that originally shipped with the air in 2008?
Also, while we're on the topic of macbook air hinges; how should I make sure this does not happen again to either of my macbook airs (I recently got the i5 revision)? More specifically how far should I open the lid.
    Thanks!

My understanding of the hinge issue is that the primary reason for the issue was the barrel assembly enclosure couldn't handle the constant repetition of opening and closing past the acceptable usage angle for the lid. Over time and with enough force applied it would just give out and then the tension coils inside would break out through the relatively thin plastic enclosure.
I do not believe anything was changed with the design or materials when the machines are serviced. The newer models with the "2nd generation" body styling fix this issue more than anything. Not to mention Apple shifted the exhaust vents for the fan to a more suitable place than the bottom of it.

  • HT2728 How would I transfer my information from my old Macbook Air (2008) to the new one I purchased today?

Today I ordered my new MacBook Air - and am looking for advice on how I might best transfer all the information off my old MacBook Air to the new one. There are not many ports available on the old MacBook Air (2008/9) and of course the new MacBook Air comes with more ports and connectivity.
Appreciate any advice that you can give me.
    Many thanks in advance
    Ed

Use an external drive with Time Machine or Clone your HD to the external.
When you start the new one, setup manager will ask if you want to migrate from another disk, time machine etc.
This will only require 1 usb port.

    Hey Stella,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question! I'd read through the following article before selling your Mac - it'll include instructions on how to reformat your hard drive:

  • Problem to install Windows using Boot Camp 3.0.4 in Macbook Air (2008)

    Hi Folks!
    Please I need help.
I have a original Macbook Air of 2008 (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP8?viewlocale=pt_BR) with the Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I want to install the Windows 7 Professional x64 as a secondary partition using the BootCamp 3.0.4. After steps necessary for create a new partition with the BootCamp, I rebooted the machine with the "Windows 7 Professional installation DVD" in DVD device, but then the setup Windows installation does not appears, showing the initialization white screen of the Mac OS with the apple image, a symbol of emptiness and a folder with a "?" symbol within alternating infinitely and do not finish.
I tried with the Windows Ultimate Vista x86, but occurs the same.
Please, what can I do to install the Windows in my Macbook Air?
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Jonas Presse

No, I did not get a solve. Actually, my problem worsened. I tried it again, but this time the computer wouldn´t detect my alu keyboard, hence I couldn´t select a drive to tell the bloody thing where to boot from. That is weird, because at the time I opened this thread it did work. I actually had to borrow a wired keyboard so I could hit alt and get it to work.
At the moment I am not so keen on trying it again......

  • MacBook Air (2008) screen contents on iMac (2011)

I have a MacBook Air from 2008 and I would like to connect it up to my 2011 iMac so that it displays the contents of my MBA on the iMac's screen.
I saw that this is easily achieved with a Thunderbolt cable, but my MBA doesn't have that option: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP501
Is there a way to achieve this please?
    Thanks!

Thanks Niel, I tried that, managed to get it working but for some reason the screen would only show windows off to the right of the screen i.e. out of view, you'd actually have to put the window off the screen to see it on the other Mac, weird?!
Anyway, the fans started to go and it was a little laggy, plus it will cost money after some time, so I decided to go the cable route.
It looks like I have the "Apple Micro-DVI to DVI Adapter" (part: MB203G) which came with my MacBook Air and so I would need a Micro-DVI to Thunderbolt converter like this:

  • HT201700 Voltage input range for original Macbook air 2008/2009

My charger (A1244 | 45w) no longer works. And I need to buy a new charger. Since this is for an old 2008 macbook air, the smart thing to do is buy a charger that will work with new models (that require 85w).
Apple doesn't make this power tolerance specification easily available online. This page is helpful, but doesn't provide the tolerance specification....

    Question:
I want to make sure that the (minimum) voltage input range for my original macbook air is between 14V and 18.5V.
Does anyone have a definitive answer for this?

"the smart thing to do is buy a charger that will work with new models (that require 85w)."
No, the smart thing is to buy the proper replacement for the power adapter.  Since the power adapter connector has changed, you'll also need to purchase an adapter for the MagSafe connector.

  • Macbook Air 2008, LCD display nothing but grey, external display works

    Hi Everyone,
I've got a 2008 Macbook Air running 10.6.8 on a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 with 2GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. About a month ago something went wrong with the logic board - the unit wouldn't start up and gave 3 beeps indicating a bad RAM issue. Since the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board and the warranty was way past expired, I figured I'd just replace the board. The replacement was a breeze, albeit time-consuming, and once I got the new board in, the unit booted up fine.
The problem is that now the display isn't quite working right. When it first boots the screen is completely grey - I get no spinning disc, no apple, no question mark, nothing. If I leave it alone, the screen dims once the sleep timer kicks in, but it's just a darker shade of grey. The brightness works too - when you reduce it the screen does dim but there's still no picture. The kicker is that I hooked up my projector to it and I can my desktop as I should. I tried resetting the NVRAM, ran disc utility, and tried running the Apple Hardware Test. The thing with the AHT is that I can't see the screen when it's running so I don't know exactly how it went, but in System Profiler I see that an AHT was run today and the result was "Passed". I don't know if that means no errors came up, or that the errors that did come up weren't problematic enough to fail the test.
I was very careful in replacing the logic board so I doubt any of the internals were damaged in the process but everything seems to indicate a hardware issue here. The screen was working fine before the previous logic board died so I find it hard to believe that both the board and the screen died at the same time. I've read about some people finding the data display cable to be the problem but no amount of fussing with it causes even the slightest change on the LCD display.
Any suggestions of how to diagnose the screen and/or cable without a working display? I just put $300 into this machine in the logic board and I really don't want to spend even more to replace the screen/cable.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Hi Marat,
I appreciate the quick response but I doubt the machine is completely toast - it clearly still functions to some degree. I'm trying to assess whether the replacement logic board could be the problem (and how to test this) as well as troubleshooting the issue if it isn't the logic board. I don't feel like getting stuck with a $300 logic board that might have a fried component...

  • AirDrop on MacBook Air

I have iPhone 8 and iPad Mini 2 both running iOS8, a MacBook Air (2011) recently upgraded to OS Yosemite.  I tried to use the AirDrop feature to send photo from iPhone / iPad to the Macbook Air, or vice versa, but the MacBook Air just could not detect any of the iPhone and iPad.  However, I have managed to transfer item between the iPhone and iPad via AirDrop, but just not the MacBook Air.
    Any idea why? Help please.

  • TS2948 Does apple still support the MacBook Air 2008 models?

Recentely, my MacBook Air's(2008) hinge has become very loose and have very little positions the hinge can stand on. So I took a look inside to see that the hinges is slightly out of place(and also from the outside you can clearlly see a small crack) and I thought about replacing it myself, but it seemed a little advance for me since i'm really not the type of dismanteler and i'm not really organized. So i was wondering, if i bring my MacBook Air into a apple store, would they still fix it or will they say they don't fix these, I just don't want to waste my time going to the apple store considering they're really far away from where I live at. Also, how much would you infer they would charge me? Thanks, Kyle

Do you have an update? I recently brought mine in for a battery bulging problem and they wont fix it because they no longer make the battery for it. They did however kept the battery for safety concern and left me with a battery-less MBA. I didn't realize the hinge was covered by Apple and tought it was a defect. The MBA is so old I didn't think to bring it in for that. Let me know if you have any success with yours. Thanks.

  • Macbook Air (2008) shuts down on its own at ~20%

Hi! I recently purchased a used Macbook Air and am running OSX Mountain Lion on it. I absolutely love it, but there's one problem: when the battery gets close to or down to 20%, it shuts down without warning, much as if I'd shut it down myself, except sudden. I've tried resetting my SMC--in fact, my bluetooth messed up and I did it to fix that--but it hasn't helped. I've only ever seen a battery warning once, when it got to 9%. Does anyone know how to reset the battery warning (to, say, 25%) or fix/recalibrate the battery to act properly and not shut down at 20%? Thank you, everyone, for your help in advance.

The battery says it's okay, but I was considering something of the same. I have a MBA battery in my Amazon cart ready to go, if I can't find another way to fix it.
