No Airdrop on my iMac

Apparently, as of Yosemite it should be possible to use Airdrop on an iMac as well and it should be as simple as opening your Finder and selecting Airdrop from the Go menu.
I am sad to note that there is no Airdrop listed in the Go menu (or elsewhere in the Finder).
Along with the promised functionality of being able to (answer the) phone via my iMac, the System Preferences (Notification Center, applications that I do not want to give notifications; screensaver randomly reverting back to the default one), this is yet another disappointment with Yosemite.
Any thoughts on how to get Airdrop to work would be appreciated. The Notification Center settings problem seems to be a bug that others have as well and is covered in a different post.

Confirming that this is just "planned ageing", I found an article that explains how one can enable Airdrop on older Macs, provided they run on Lion or higher. This is what it says (as I cannot copy in the link without getting an error message):
Launch Terminal, found in /Applications/Utilities/
Paste in the following defaults command:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
Hit Return, then on a new line in the Terminal type the following command to relaunch the Finder:
killall Finder
Exit out of Terminal if you want, and launch any Finder window to discover the AirDrop icon
I tried that, and indeed I am now getting the Airdrop icon in my Finder. Next step is to see how it works :-)

  • HT4783 Why can I not airdrop between my iMac and iPad Air?

Is there a way to airdrop between my iMac and iPad Air?

AirDrop uses different systems to transfer data in iDevices and Macs, so you cannot use AirDrop between an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and a Mac. If you want this feature, send the idea to Apple > http://www.apple.com/feedback
Instead, there are other ways to transfer data between the Mac and your iPad, like Dropbox, or use iTunes.

If you have an iPhone5 and an IMac,
    - you should have your photos in phototstream (last 1000)
    - your iphone should have your icloud account linked
    - your imac should have your icloud account linked

  • Airdrop on my iMac

In Airdrop on my iMac I don't see any blue text at the bottom of the window under the icon. This means I can't see anyone else or my iPhone to airdrop with. My daughters new Macbook allows me to airdrop no problem, I am on Mavericks on a 2009 iMac. Any ideas??

Hi Eric, it is Yosemite that I have, sorry for writing Mavericks, slip of the fingers!

  • How do I download my Microsoft office on to my MacBook Air using airdrop from my iMac? Please help

How do I download my Microsoft office on to my MacBook Air using airdrop from my iMac? Please help

Out of curiosity, does Microsoft's licensing allow for such an install and/or more than one install? I just did a cursory check on their licensing and found that most are only licensed for one computer unless you buy a special key card.
I had a different app once that was only allowed on one computer; it would not install on the other Mac. You may therefore encounter problems - since you must have an install CD, why not use that if you have the key card allowing you to install it on more than one?

  • Handoff/Continuity/Airdrop Between iPhone & iMac

    Hi
I believe that its only iMacs 2012 and beyond that will support Handoff/Continuity/Airdrop with an iPhone 4S and above running iOS 8.1. I have a late 2009 iMac running OSX Yosemite and my iPhone 5 will be running iOS 8.1 come Monday.
My question is, would I be able to use Handoff/Continuity/Airdrop from Monday onwards if I had this device installed on my iMac?

It's not supposed to work; doing that requires a 2012 or newer Mac.

  • How do i start airdrop on the iMac

I am trying to connect iPhone 6 to imac to airdrop a photo.
However the imax does not recognize the iPhone.
    how do i fix it?

If by "recognize" you mean that you are trying to Bluetooth pair the two devices, note that you need to have Bluetooth and wi-fi turned on for both but you do not pair them. An iPhone and a computer will Bluetooth pair only for personal hotspot.
The following quote from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106 may also help:
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.

  • Airdrop missing from IMac

Hi I have installed Lion onto both my Macbook and iMac. Airdrop appears by default on the macbook but not the iMac. I have been unable to locate it on the iMac. Can anyone advise where it can be found and how to install it.
    cheers
    Wayne

Have you got wi-fi turned on on the iMac - even if you are connected by ethernet?
Pretty sure I got a message on my iMac yesterday prompting me to turn it on for Airdrop to work.
Edited to add a link to another thread with some more info about turning it on in Finder Prefs in order to see it: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15717999#15717999

  • HOW TO REINSTALL AIRDROP APP ON IMAC

ACCIDENTLY I HAVE REMOVED AIRDROP APP. FROM THE SIDE BAR ON MY IMAC.  HOW DO I RE-INTALL IT?

If you are using Yosemite see:OS X Yosemite: Use AirDrop to send files to devices near you for information about using AirDrop.
Have you tried Finder > Go (on the menu bar) > does AirDrop appear there?
How did you remove AirDrop?  If the key-stroke combinations will not bring it back up as described in the Knowledge Base article, you may need to reinstall your Mac OS X version.

Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to know the requirements for Air Drop. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • Airdrop: My iMac Pro can send but not receive

My iPhone 5S is discovered by Airdrop on my iMac Pro and will receive files from it, but Airdrop does not work in the other direction. My iPhone cannot discover the iMac Pro even as the iMac Pro sees the iPhone and while the two devices are on the desk next to each other. So, once again - does anyone have an answer to, now, this problem?

    You'll need OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
