No Airplay available

Guys,
I wanted too try out airplay, but it seems it does not exist on my system. I have the latest 27" iMac with iTunes 10.1.1, and I have an iPod Touch 64GB (I assume that makes it 3rd generation as it doesn't have the camera), which is running iOS4.2. My network uses an Airport Extreme base station version 7.5.2.
Can anyone tell me why I don't have Airplay? Is this something only available when you have Apple TV?
Also, how can I sync my iPod with iTunes wirelessly?

1. You are only able to use Airplay to stream content FROM iTunes / iPod Touch TO devices that support Airplay. As you don't have any devices that you can stream music TO (i.e. Apple TV or Airport Express) then you will not see the Airplay option in iTunes or on the iPod. What exactly were you expecting to do? You can't stream from iTunes to the iPod using Airtunes, neither can you stream from the iPod to iTunes, that is not what AirPlay is designed to do.
2. You cannot sync the iPod with iTunes wirelessly that is not a feature of the iPod or iTunes.

  • Happy accident?: AirPlay available on separate wifi networks

I have an apple airport express version 2011 hooked up to my ISP issued Zyxel modem/router. I use the airport express for a 5ghz signal that I use to stream Netflix and then mirror back onto apple tv for viewing in the living room. From my tests I need the 5 ghz to handle the bandwidth requirements to stream Netflix to laptop and then stream back to apple tv.
The drawback is that I can't have my iPhone 4 on the same network because it doesn't support 5ghz. Nevertheless I have my Zyxel modem/router shooting a 2.4 ghz signal. While the iPhone 4 is  connected to the modem/router wifi network, I am able to send music from my iPhone 4 to airport express even though they are on separate wifi networks (although the airport express is connected to Zyxel modem/router through an Ethernet cable).  The airplay icon occasionally disappears and a restart of the phone or app does not make it reappear.
What gives? Fom the apple literature, this is not supposed to be possible. I am wanting to understand this because I will soon buy a dd wrt flashed router and if my current setup is more than a mere fluke, I'll purchase a cheaper router with the intention of hardwiring apple tv while using iPhone 4 as a remote on a separate wifi network. That way I won't have to buy a more expensive router simply to have a dual band network going. I plan to use the dd wrt router with VPN installed to stream Netflix to apple tv directly. too bad VPN services do not support installation on airport extreme.
    Your insights are appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting hypothesis B-rock.  I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you.  At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem.  Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations.  I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc.  As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed.  I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems!  Grrrr.

  • Is AirPlay available for 2008 MacBook?

Can someone please confirm whether AirPlay is even a possibility for my mac? I have a 2008 or 09 MacBook. Software is OSX 10.9.4 with Mavericks downloaded last night. No AirPlay icon is visible, but there never was previously either (I think). Next question, if the answer to this is "no", would something like Air Parrot do the job? Or am I still too outdated. An Apple rep assured me that I would have it once I downloaded Mavericks, but it doesn't turn up in the search.

2011 or newer Macs have this capability only.
You could try Airparrot. I myself have found it sluggish on my 2009 MBP.

  • Is Airplay available with iTunes Radio?

I quite like iTunes Radio, but I cannot seem to find where you connect to Airplay like I do when using Pandora. Apple couldn't possibly have missed this?

In iTunes 11.2.2.3, I can connect to AirPlay for my music library.  However, the AirPlay icon goes away when I try to stream radio content.  ...strange that Apple did not answer your question, given that it's still an issue and you asked it nearly 7 months ago.   That's very disappointing.

  • How to get airplay to work on macbook pro that is newer than 2011

I have been looking to use my computer to play onto my Apple TV, my Mac Pro is Mid 2012 and running OS X Lion 10.7.5.  Everything that I have seen is telling me that I should be seeing airplay available for my use, unless I am misunderstanding what is being said.  Please help, I am not quite sure what to do about this problem.  Thanks in advance!!

Would the Genius Bar at Apple Store UK do it for free? My mac warranty is expired.
    I doubt it
It is a very simple job to do it yourself. remove the bottom of the case, undo the 2 screws that hold the drive in, take it and put te bottom case back on.

Unlikely as it wasn't a proper frimware update, just new content material detected via the internet.

  • Cannot Get Airplay to Work with Airpot Express on PC Laptop

Until recently, I had Airplay available on both my PC Laptop (Windows 7) and MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.4). I have had to reboot Airport Express because of a power failure. The MacBook immediately picked up the Airport Express and iTines Airplay works fine. However, the laptop cannot find Airport Express, When I run Airport Utiliity, it scans and rescans but cannot locate it. iTunes on the PC does not let me configure for Airplay. Any help would be appreciated.

    Sure ...

  • Amazon prime video airplay blocked on all Apple devices, why?

Why is it that Apple cannot figure out how to come to an agreement with the largest online book and video supplier in regards to making apple airplay available for Amazon prime video account holders.  Amazon Prime is a pretty cool technology but politics and money are blocking Apple users from being able to use this technology.  You can hear the movie but there is no picture.  Nothing is wrong, Amazon has just blocked all Apple users from what I can tell.  It does seem a bit hush, hush for some reason.  I love Apple, but they need to learn to play with others better or they will find themselves in decline with all the Microsoft tablet products out there.  Anyone wish to weigh in on this dilemma?

While I agree Apple cannot control Amazon, but on the other hand Apple could try to negotiate on behalf of all their customers.  Apple is pretty powerful company, no excuses for not trying to do something.  There is now an app, and we know that Amazon does market themselves as not being exclusive. This is an incredible technology and should be enjoyed by Apple customers.

  • Can I use air play to mirror anything that's on the screen of my iPad

I have the nfl gamerewind app on my iPad. I'd like to use air play to mirror the games from my iPad to my TV screen.  Is this possible?
Or, is it possible to mirror the screen of my Windows 7 laptop to my TV using Apple TV?
Thanks for any help, I am very new to this, have never used Apple TV before.

There are 2 kinds of Airplay - one which 'mirrors the display' on AppleTV (in iPAd 4:3 aspect ratio).  Mirroring is only available on iPhone4S and later and iPad 2 and later and certain newer Macs.  Mirroring is processor intensive as it compresses each display frame and sends the video to AppleTV as well as having to do what an app is doing.
The other kind of Airplay available on some older devices essentially sends a pre-rendered compatible file to AppleTV to play rather than a mirror of the screen.
Note - content providers can and do block certain things from working with Airpolay so check if it's a particular app, game or website you want to airplay.
You might want to check out Airparrot which might be able to mirror your Windows laptop to AppleTV.

  • How do I watch iMovie events on 2nd generation apple tv or TV?

How do I watch iMovie events on 2nd generation apple tv, or just on my tv?  I thought there would be an easy solution to something so obvious, but I just cant figure it out.  There must be some way to take my imovie events and watch them on my TV...whether via appletv or not.
Thanks for the help.  I have the latest versions of all software.

Yes, your videos are all recorded in HD. But, when you imported them into iMovie you likely chose the "Large" size at import and not original size. The large size is 960x540 lines which is less than the 1280x720 HD capability of the Apple TV 2. Therefore you didn't get the HD option when adding to iTunes.
An important point is that the HD video files captured on the iPhone 4S are going to be very large if you import them into iMovie at Full Resolution. iMovie will have a hard time processing full 1080P video. Importing as Large makes the video much more editable.
Your right. There is overlap that can be confusing regarding AirPlay and having your movies added to iTunes.
    I'll try to explaing this
AirPlay is primarily intended to allow you to be using your iOS device and deciding, "I want to see that on my TV" or "I want to hear that on my stereo." In this case you might be playing Pandora radio app and thus not even using iTunes, yet your music can be redirected via AirPlay. If you were watching a movie from the ABC tv app and you decided you want it on the big TV, you'd use AirPlay to get it to the Apple TV 2, yet it's not in iTunes.
iTunes on your computer has AirPlay but currently the Mac OS X does not have system wide AirPlay available so only content in your iTunes library can be redirected (AirPlay).
Having the Apple TV see your iTunes Library isn't really AirPlay. This function is Home Sharing. You see, you can't redirect from the Apple TV to some other device, computer or TV.
It's not "better" to use AirPlay from an iOS device or iTunes on your Mac than say using the Apple TV 2 to fetch the content directly from your iTunes Library. It's more a matter of convenience. What's in your hand the moment you're ready to watch or hear something; your iPhone 4S, the Apple TV 2 remote, or your Mac keyboard? Whichever you have at the moment you want to access your content, you'll get the same quality.
Kind of long, hope this helps!

  • Bluetooth and headphones in IPAD

I am using I-PAD ist generation.
How can I setup my I-PAD to use a bluetooth headset device and listen to headset directly to the headset input?
I connect my headsets alone and it works fine.
I connect my bluetooth device for my headsets and it works fine alone.
When I have them bluetooth headsets enabled, the headsets plugged into the I-PAD is disabled and I cannot hear anything come out of the direct connected headsets.
Is this a limitation?  If not, what setting am I missing?
    Thanks,
    J

I picked up a pair of Jabra Halo Bluetooth headphones and they rock. When I first got them, some of the features did not work correctly, however with the newest iOS 4.2 update for the iPad, every feature is now supported. You can control volume, pause/play, skip and rewind audio tracks. Many folks complained that the lowest volume available on the headphones was not low enough, well now with Airplay available on iPad, you can control the volume from the iPad itself, which is nice. Basically anything that was wrong with the phones before has been fixed by Apple's iPad software update. They run about $100 a pair but they're totally worth it. Hope that helps.

  • Good experience with 10.7.3

I waited to upgrade from 10.6.8 which was very solid till 10.7.3 was out and my tax returns were submitted.
I downloaded Lion 10.7.3 from the Mac App store, made a copy on a DVD to use on my wife's iMac later, and did the install.  All went smoothly.  When it booted back up, Crashplan triggered a download for Java so the Crashplan software could run.  That went smoothly.
All in all, upgrading to 10.7 from 10.6 has been the easiest OS X upgrade I've done yet.  I like how Lion works with my Apple touchpad and got used to the like-iOS scrolling after a few days.  10.7 seems faster on my early 2011 iMac also.  The only problem I have currently is that the last Java update has caused a problem with Webex desktop sharing but I'm using that less now since I've started using LogMeIn to do remote support of Windows systems.  I find full screen display in Safari quite nice for some sites, and think file Autosave in Numbers is great idea too.
I'm looking forward to 10.8 to have Airplay available to send from my iMac to the Apple TV device so we can watch Daily Show on the bigger screen.

Both happily coexist under Windows.  I assume it'd be the same for Macs.
