No AirPlay functionality in Photos App

Hi,
I've read that many have been able to transfer photos from the camera roll using AirPlay, it's also previewed in Apple's video. But after upgrading to 4.2.1 I have no AirPlay button in my photos app at all. It works everywhere else it should be. Any thoughts on this? I don't have an Apple TV on my network yet but surely the button should still be there, it is everywhere else.
Cheers

It will play your photos slideshows after the 4.2.1 update, but there is a bug in the iOS software. The slideshow(s) play over Apple TV using AirPlay, but only play with the basic cross dissolve transition and all photos only show for 2 seconds. All user defined slideshow options are disabled when the AirPlay slideshow is enabled, but reappear on the iphone, ipod touch, etc. once the photos slideshow is played on the iOS device. Definitely a bug in 4.2.1, as I'm sure other things will be noticed and hopefully fixed soon.

  • How can I use Airplay Mirror of Photos app without slideshow?

Every time i try to use airplay mirror and go to the photos app it starts the slideshow feature.
I can't find a way to disable the slide show. I want simply to mirror my photos so I can zoom them and move around.
Did anyone figure out a way to do that?

    Hi
To use airplay you need an airplay capable device such as Apple TV and an iPhone that is 4s or higher, mine is only 4 so I can't access airplay. Once both the Apple TV and phone or iPad are connected to the same wireless notwork you will be able to mirror your screens.
    I hope this helps.

  • Airplay Mirroring vs From Photos App

When you use Airplay mirroring to AppleTV and play videos on your photos app, they play instantly with no loss of quality or framerate.  When you try to just hit the airplay icon in the camera roll when not mirroring, it takes forever for the video to buffer.  Seems like a major flaw.  So glad I found mirroring working so much better though.  Problem is it randomly will switch back from mirroring to the photos app airplay sometimes.

    Hello Paul,
So that's what's wrong with it! I must admit I was so puzzled over the lack of zoom I hadn't noticed the lack of function buttons. I"ve Apple TV3 and an iPad Air so I'll try the same test as you and see if I get the same results.

  • Airplay only works with Photos App after upgrade to latest ios 6.1.3

I have upgraded both my iphone4s and ipad2 to ios 6.1.3 and now I dont see the Airplay icon on the Youtube App, Jasmine App, McTube App, Safari etc.
The only place I see the Airplay icon is when browsing photos and videos using the native ios photos app.
I have tried rebooting my iDevices, restarted my xbmc server, but to no affect. Why does it only show up in the native photos App??
    Please help
    Thanks

Still works fine for me, have you restarted your Apple TV and wifi router?

  • No Airplay icon on photos in Photo app

Do not see an Airplay icon on photos in the Photo app on either the iPad or iPad2.
See it just fine on other applications.
Cannot find a clear answer on google or in these groups.
    Anyone know the scoop

    my issue is illuminated.
    I have an airport express
    it can stream audio.
That is why the airplay icon shows up on the Videos,YouTube, and iPod apps
I do need an ATV to get the airplay icon to show up on Photos.
All of this is hinted at online but never written down.
the pictures show a ATV screen or box, show Photos screen with icon
but never say screen only looks this way with ATV available.
And I fooled myself by having an airport express which put the icon on all the other applications.

  • Why the difference in the Photos app functionality between the iPad 2 and iPhone 4?

Photo Stream works well on my iPad 2. For whatever reason, iPad 2 has more functionality in the iOS 5 "Photos" app than the iPhone 4. This may be because my iPad is 64GB and the iPhone is 32GB. Nevertheless, the iPad has the following folders in the Photos app (the first four of which match OSX iPhoto on the Mac in numbers of photos; only the order of matches in the Photo Stream folder; the last folder is not in iPhoto, or is not readily displayed there as far as I can tell):
"Photos" - corresponding to the Photos folder in iPhoto Library (not in the same order)
"Photo Stream" - virtually identical to Photo Stream in iPhoto
"Albums" - same as in iPhoto, including "Last 12 Months" and "Last Import"
"Events" - about one quarter the number of Events (groupings of photos) as are listed in iPhoto
"Places" - not displayed in iPhoto, as far as I can tell
The Photos app in the iPhone only lists "Albums," starting with Camera Roll and Photo Stream, with the option of adding more albums (no option to delete) - but not like the Albums that are displayed on the iPad.
What accounts for this difference between iPad and iPhone?

    Thanks for the report.

  • Airplay and videos in camera roll and photos app

Does anyone know if airplay allows you to push videos shot with the iPhone that are currently in the camera roll, or videos synced from iPhoto that are in different albums on the photos aPP?

Just installed and tested the updates for the iPhone 4 and ATV.
When airplaying videos from the iPhone 4 to ATV, all videos in the iPod App, videos section, can be airplayed with no problem. However, for videos in the "photos" app (ie: videos you've recently taken with your iPhone camera), there is simply no airplay button. The still photos have an airplay button, and can be airplayed to your ATV with no problem. But the videos cannot. This is odd and disappointing for me, because this was the feature I was most excited about: Taking a video of my 7-month-old son with my iPhone 4 at one point during the day, then airplaying it to the ATV to show my wife and others later in the day, without having to bother to synch my iphone to my computer, put the video into iTunes, and navigate to it on the ATV.

  • Airplay - How to prevent Photos app to go fullscreen?

    Hi all,
I'm using Reflector + a screen recorder on my Mac to record my iDevices' screens mainly for wireframing.
Today, I wanted to record the built-in effects of Photos app in iOS 7 {you know, pinch-rotate-zoom etc.}.
But the moment I started the pinch motion, the screen on my Mac went to fullscreen right away.
Of course, the screen recorder couldn't capture the effects which I need to record.
This may be a cool feature to watch summer photos with the family members,
but in my case it's quite frustrating.
Is there a way to prevent the official Photos app to go fullscreen and make iOS to treat it like any other app?
    Thanks for any insight...
    Fingers crossed
    Best,
    ~ Fatih

On OS X, You are able to hide the preview window on the right in normal mode, or on the lower side in classic mode, by simply putting your cursor on the thin bar which is in between, and then make it as small as possible, so it goes away.
Then your messages won't be automatically read when clicked once, but only if you click them twice and a new window with the message opens.
Also, you are able to mark them as unread again, which is a silly workaround, but possible.
You can do that by right clicking and select 'Mark as...' -> unread.
    On iOS, I'm not sure..

  • FW 3.0 Photo app not functioning properly

Has anyone elso noted that the 3.0 Photo app is broken? The orientation can no longer be changed. So now landscape photos viewed while holding the iPod in the landscape orientation are displayed on their side. There does not seem anyway to flip the photos anymore.
Message was edited by: Scott Robinson3

The app works as intended but I had a similar problem with video podcasts not rotating as expected. Do a reset: hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons down until you see the Apple logo. Release.
While that should fix it, I noticed that it didn't fix my podcast problem until I re-synced the iPod. So if the reset doesn't do it, sync it.

  • Using the new Photos app on multiple devices - confusion!

I find the recent way ios/Photos handles photos quite confusing. I am not too concerned about not having a Camera Roll, but seeing how not having this creates strange behavior when editing/deleting photos, I can see how the Camera Roll is definitely necessary or the whole thing needs revamped to handle things better.
    Here's my set up:
    iMac with iPhoto
iPhone 5s with the new Photos app
iPad Mini with the new Photos app
The one things I DO like is that whenever I take a photo (or upload in the case of my iMac), the photo is duplicated across all devices. That means I could take a photo on my iPhone and then edit it on my iPad Mini which has a bigger screen. (Well, so I thought..but read below.) Yes, you could do this with Photo Stream, but having all photos in one place is a bit easier to remember and find. I also like that when I delete the photo on the device that I took it on, all photos on the other two devices are also deleted. Easy. Thanks.
But that is where the ease of use ends.
If I delete the photo on any other two devices (i.e. the devices that I did NOT take the photo on), it only deletes on the devices which I didn't take the photo on. In other words, it leaves the photo on the device which I originally took the photo on.
To add to the confusion... if I edit the original photo, the edits do not get duplicated to the other devices! I see the original photo on the devices with which I did NOT take the photo but the edited one is on the original device I took it on.
Let's add even MORE confusion....if I want to edit the photo on a device it was not taken on, I then get a notice that it has to be Duplicated before I can edit it. Well, okay, I do that and then edit it. However, I now have the original showing up twice on the device it was originally taken on...the original photo and the now duplicated photo--it's the EXACT same photo since no edits get carried over from the other device.
I believe all of this is because of what happened when ios 9 combined the functions of the Camera Roll and Photo Stream together. It exhibits both behaviors but since you cannot be sure which photo was taken on which device, you have less understanding what will happen when you try to delete a photo or edit it.
Here's the key headache....What happens if I want to make sure a photo is deleted from ALL my devices and I don't remember which device I took the photo on? I will have to check every device just to be sure! I can't even open up iPhoto on my Mac and delete it from the Photo Stream album because it will remain on the original device. So, I have to check all devices and also iPhoto on my Mac for good measure in case I actually uploaded a photo there--which I do since I am scanning in old photos.
Key headache #2...you end up with duplicates of the photo if you edit the photo on any device on which it was not taken on. You also get different versions of the photo. You end up not knowing which photo was the original. To be sure to have all edited photos eventually on you iMac, you'll need to sync all devices physically to iPhoto.
Who has time to track all this?
What should happen is this...all of the photos, including their edits, should sync exactly on all devices. My Recently Added should look exactly the same across all devices and carry over any edits...now that is what I would call Continuity and Handoff! But as it stands, we don't have anything close to this...is more like Pandemonium and MixUp!
This is really a mess and way too confusing to keep track of. I can only hope this get resolved when Photos on the Mac is released.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • How can I disable the Photos app from automatically running when I plug in my iPhone?

How can I disable the Photos app from automatically running when I plug in my iPhone?
I have no intention of ever using Photos, in fact, having to abandon Aperture takes me one step close to moving back to Windows, but I digress.
I just want to NOT have to kill the Photos app every time I plug in my phone.
    Thanks.

I am still seeing the option Image Capture, like shown in the screenshot that Rysz posted.   But it is another example of the hide-and-seek Apple likes to play with us.
The option has to be set for each device individually. With the device connected to USB, you have to click the tiny disclosure triangle in the lower left corner of the sidebar to reveal the option.
I was perfectly happy with the program I paid for (Aperture), and now to maintain the functionality I have to pay for another application (LightRoom) to get the functionality that I paid for in Aperture.
Aperture 3.6 is working well with Yosemite. I will use it, as long as I have a Mac, that will run Yosemite or a compatible system.
Have you looked at Capture One?  It looks much more similar to Aperture than Lightroom.

  • Can videos be trimmed in the Photos app in iOS 5?  This doesn't seem to be an option any longer.

Previously in ios 4, the length of videos could be trimmed in the Photos app.  It appears this functionality was removed for some reason.  Can this be confirmed?

I went through all options of Universal Access and didn't see the 5 key mapped anywhere. When I open the Keyboard Viewer, if I hit 4 or 6, the appropriate key lights up. However, nothing happens when I hit the 5 key.
If I hit ^5, the 5 key lights up but isn't printed to the screen. "∞", and "%" seem to work fine as well.

  • Capabilities of Photos App and Aperture

I see a lot of discussion about the new Photos app as being a replacement for Aperture, but most of these discussions seem to ignore many of the key capabilities which make Aperture important to many professionals. And the idea that many of these have been removed but will reappear sometime in the future is ridiculous--nobody could run a business using a tool like that. Are you supposed to go out of business until the time in the future when Apple reintroduces the feature you depended on?
I'm also a little skeptical about how "modern" the app is and what a "streamlined interface" it has if it lacks many key features that already existed in the present software and which professional photographers and heavy Aperture users counted on. It's easy to "streamline" an interface if you just remove functionality. What many of the "reviewers" do not seem to understand is that it could take a year of more of heavy work to reconstruct an existing Aperture library with all that it contains because it is not just a hierarchical collection of pictures with keywords.
If you've been looking at Photos, maybe you can fill in some of the gaps in knowledge of features.
--Will Photos retain the edits of Photos in an Aperture library? Pros may have tens of thousands of photos (or more) with edits done over the past 8 years. Suggesting all of these need to be redone is kind of ridiculous. And why would any photographer ever trust an Apple product again if a corporate move resulted in that!
--If some "tools" are missing, then all of them might as well be missing as far as importing an Aperture library since you wouldn't really know which of your tens of thousands of pictures which had been edited were affected. You couldn't trust the "versions" in your library as some would be missing some of the edits. Is there a list of which "tools" are missing? Almost all of them are pretty heavily used by large numbers of people.
--I hear that the "Curves" tool is missing. What? This is one of the most heavily used tools of all, and one that was added to Aperture because of popular demand. What happens to all the edits done with the Curves tool? Do they disappear, making the library of edits useless? What possible reason would there be for removing something that important?
--Does Photos feature a Web journal which allows collections of photos to be output as Web pages to be shared with clients or others?
--Can I exports groups of files in any size and format (RAW, jpeg, TIFF, PNG., etc.)? You have to be able to do this for the product to be of any use to a professional at all.
--Can I take advantage of multiple monitors to do things like show sets of photos and controls on one monitor and a full-screen image on the other?
--I've hear the flags feature is gone. Why? What happens to all the images I've flagged through the years for one reason or another? Are pros supposed to go through 100,000 images they have stored in their library and flag them all again?
--I've heard that "Stacks" is missing. For professional sports photographers, that is essential. You take bursts of images, you want them stacked on import so it's easy to pick the best from a burst and quickly get rid of the best. Why on earth would this be removed? It was one of the key selling points in early Aperture marketing and a heavily used feature.
--Does the new app show the focus points, hot and cold areas, etc. on the pictures if so desired?
--What happens to books, smart albums, Web journals, projects, folder, albums, etc. One heck of a lot of time has gone in to creating all of these.
--Can I search using any metadata, keyword, etc.?
--Can I customize my display to see the metadata I want in a particular situation. I certainly don't want to see all of it, but there are key fields which may be especially important.
--How long would it take to "import" an Aperture library of, say, 500 gigabytes, into Photos? Would this would require another storage medium to store the new library as well as the old? I'm a little wary here, as the Aperture to Aperture 3 upgrade took 24 hours or more for many people.
--Is iCloud storage of photos really practical for professionals who may have libraries of a terabyte or more? How exactly would all of this information migrate into the cloud? Who's got the bandwith for that?
Anyone who could do a proper comparison of Aperture and Photos, from the perspective of a sophisticated Aperture, and not just gush about how it's an improvement on iPhoto, would be much appreciated. I haven't been able to figure much out from what I've seen so far.

The app is in beta and we're not allowed comment. That's standard policy. What you can glean from reading around the web is the same that we can. My read on what I've seen: It's a step-up for iPhoto uses but for Pro users it's time to look elsewhere. It's not a robust Pro tool.

  • Problems with events in Photo app on upgrading to iOS8

Yes we understood that iPhoto & Aperture were to be discontinued on the desktop OS sometime in the future but it was a shock to find without warning when upgrading to iOS 8 that iPhoto would not work. Why didn't Apple tell us this!
The new version of iOS 8 Photos app. is better then the previous but just doesn't have the features when I have spent hours tagging, editing and sorting all my photos in iPhoto on my iPad and  desktop.
On migrating to iOS8 all my photos transferred fine but the Events are now in a random order in the Photos app on my iPad rather then in the date created order as is the norm and is reflected in iPhoto on the desktop. They appeared in the correct order in the Photo app before the update. I cannot seem to change that, so I am unable to easily find the photos I wish to view by scrolling through the Events. Has anyone any suggestions of how to sort this? Removing photos and re-syncing them did not help neither has a complete update, restore and re-sync!
Even trying to find a photo using the new improved search function does not help me find the photos. Even though I give each Event a name "Lisa's Wedding" etc. the search function in the Photos app in iOS 8 fails to find events or most keywords which I had hoped it would. From what I have seen so far the search finds titles of individual photos, albums and geo tags, however even the geo tags seem to be named differently to what show up in iPhoto on the desktop.
Presently I have had to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 so that I can carry on working the way that I did as do need to work!
I have raised a complaint with apple regarding the dumping of the iPhoto now and a bug report regarding the ordering of Events on the Photos app. (I seemed to recall that happened with a very early version of the Photos app.) However if anyone has any suggestions of work arounds or if I am just missing something, then all and any advice would be very welcome.
    Thank you
    Simon

but just doesn't have the features when I have spent hours tagging, editing and sorting all my photos in iPhoto on my iPad and  desktop.
You cannot add tags and captions in Photos iOS 8, and you cannot see them when opening a photo. But the tags you added previously are still there when you migrate the iPhoto library to Photos. You will see that, when you use the search field and enter one of your tags or a caption. This will find all photos with this tagged you then can create an album of all tagged photos for each tag. Creating albums with distinctive names is the new way of tagging. You can search for album names.
I share your sentiments entirely, and I hope Apple will provide an update to Photos soon or offer app extensions to add the missing features.

  • IPhone 5 two bugs in photo app.

Sorry, don't know where to submit bug reports... hope this place is okay.
Bug #1 - photos are not properly fit to screen.  To see this, take a screenshot of the home screen, or, say, of your favorite video game on the iPhone 5.  Now, look at that photo in the photo app, and double-tap it as needed to "fit" that photo to the screen.  You'll notice black space at the bottom of the photo, and the top part of the photo is off-screen.  So, if you took a screenshot of the home screen, the "menu bar" (or whatever it's called) will be off-screen.
Bug #2 - the "cancel" button that comes up in the delete menu doesn't work.  Try to delete a photo, then hit the cancel button.  You'll see the button is only barely functional - only the top sliver of the cancel button seems to accept input.

#1 was in reference to screenshots, not camera photos.  Screenshots should obviously be the same aspect ratio as the screen.  In any event, fitting a photo to screen (even if it has a different aspect ratio) should not cause part of the photo to go off-screen.  I'm not talking about "letterboxing" here... the black space in question is ONLY on the bottom of the photo, not the top - the top part instead goes off-screen.  That is definitely a bug, and I have verfied that I don't get that bug in on my old iPhone4 (updated to iOS6.)  I don't have a 4S so I can't test it on that.
I have also verfied that bug #2 does not happen on my iPhone4.
