No Airport found?

Just got a piggyback wireless card for my PowerPC G5 (late 2005 model) Plugged it in and started the computer up. Went in to Internet Connect and there is no airport...went into about this mac under more info and clicked on the airport card tab and there was no info under there either. Did i get a corrupt piece or do I need to install some software before it will work? This is the first time an airport card has been installed on the computer. Any thoughts are GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Thanks~

Let's try this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when complete trash these files...

  • Apple AirPort Express - not supported by BT Home H...

The mystery of the vanishing AirPort Express makes the above conclusion inevitable. I have two, old and new, solely for iTunes music distribution. Even when they do show on my wireless network, I get the famous AirPort Utility error 10057.
They do work from time to time, sometimes for long periods; then resetting the Home Hub usually brings them back (or not).
I'm so exasperated by the Home Hub that in the recycling bin it goes. I'll buy a proper wireless router.
Wake-up BT - Apple are bigger than you!

I thought I'd post an update on my odyssey to get an Apple AirPort Express working under Windows 7 for iTunes
The new ASUS dual band ADSL router is nice... though network setup was not entirely painless
More flexible firmware than the BT Home Hub is a real plus
Getting the AirPorts configured was not Apple-easy. The AirPort Utility does not like a thing called "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" - find your wireless adaptor Properties via Network and Sharing Center and uncheck the offending item. Beware, Windows 7 homegroups like it, so you may have to switch it on again later. Pro-tem, that should get your AirPort found by the utility.
This left me with working AirPorts which disappear from the network when not used - so you have to switch them off and on every time you want to use them.
The only solution I've come across (set Wireless Security to WPA2 Personal on AirPort and Router) hasn't worked...

  • Airport utility cannot find my new Airport extreme.

I plugged in the airport, opened airport utility and it scans and says it finds nothing.  The airport is right next to my computer.  It is not out of range.  It is blinking orange. I have a dell inspiron 600m running windows XP.  My modem is a westell 6100g.  I anticipate problems getting them to work together, but i didn't expect to not be able to even find the airport to configure it.  What is going on here?  Please help.

So I successfully set up the airport, disconnected it from the computer, connected it to the modem and used the laptop wirelessly, went downstairs to see if the other computer (a mac) could get online, it could.  Left the house, came back around midnight.  No wireless signal.  went to sleep.  this morning, no wireless signal. opened airport utility.  No airport found.  Reconnected laptop to LAN.  Found.  went through setup again.  got wireless signal.  disconnected laptop.  went in other room.  5 minutes later, no signal, no ability to see airport.  connected laptop to modem and put it in bridge mode.  same situation, only the signal seems to dissapear quicker.  I can access the internet by connecting my laptop to the airport LAN, and while that cable is connected I can see (and my computer says, use) the wireless network, but as soon as i disconnect the computer the wireless goes down.
Bob- my windows firewall is completely disabled and i currently have no anti-virus software installed, so i don't think that is the problem.
    Any advice?

  • Airport headaches - Leopard, internet and printing

Hi - I am a newbie in Mac land, but I have had an Airport Extreme for a few months, as I wanted the easy USB print server option. I just got an iMac (had a WinXP laptop previously), and while the iMac is happy to connect to the network I set up, it doesn't let me see the 2 printers I have attached to the USB port. The internet is working fine - I am connected wirelessly as I type, it will even let me see the hard drive I have attached to the USB hub, but the Mac refuses to recognize the Airport in the Airport utility (no airports found), and I cannot print. To make matters worse, I tried to do a hard reset, and for some reason, the old network keeps showing up as available (I pressed the little button for a good 20 secs). Is this because I set up the Airport from a WinXP machine?
    HELP PLEASE! Any suggestions welcome.

Interestingly, it works again. To initially configure the Airport Express, I had to shut off internet sharing. I configured the Airport Express (I did a hard reset to clear everything out) using the Airport Utility and set it to join an existing network. Of course my network did not show up since I had shut internet sharing off, but I manually typed in the name and password that I had already set for the internet sharing. I also put in a name and password for the base station, but this isn't required.
Then I hit update and right when it says that the configuration has been changed and it is waiting for the Airport Express to restart, I turned internet sharing back on. I waited and after flashing yellow for a while it connected. I unplugged it and plugged it back in to make sure it was fully configured and it works. I have found in the past the unplugging and plugging back in solves a lot of problems too.
Now that it is all set up, I can see and reconfigure the Airport Express in the Airport Utility even when internet sharing is on.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't get on to my own network

Set it up once. I've got one computer running 10.3.9 and a laptop running 10.4.?. Both could "find" the network in their airport pulldown menus.
Saw name of network in pulldown menu. Clicked on it. Didn't work. Tried "other" then found it in the pulldown menu. Clicked on it. Didn't work. Tried with both computers. Stopped. Odd, since green light was on.
Then I decided to try again. Green Light on again. Didn't work; my computer can find the base station, but can't access.
This time, I decided for the simple reset. Held down the reset button on the express unit for a second. I re-configured. New AirPort express password, turned on encrpytion, entered a new password for the network.
Still didn't work. Unplugged. Restarted computer. Nothing.
Next I reset everything. Held down reset button for five seconds. Opened up Airport Expres Setup Asssitant. Went though everything again, including encrpytion. Still didn't work. I was told "An error occurred joining the selected network."
Here's what I tried. Went to the pulldown menu for the airport, found the express base station. Tried to hold the mouse on the right one and let go. My computer couldn't recognize it. Then I opted for the WPA2 Personal password. This time, get the message "does not support the requested encrpytion method."--which is odd, since the setup let me choose WPA2 as my preferred method of privacy.
So, then I try to take that off, and then get "an error occurred joining the selected network. Tried both passwords. Nothing.
THen I re-opened setup assistant. Tried to change settings. When I try to join there, I get "an error occurred joining the selected network."
I wondered if it was the placement of the express base station. Tried another outlet. Same problems.
Wonder if it's the other wifi's nearby. There are five others within range of my computer. One is unprotected and I can get on it no problem on both computers.
I thought maybe it was a software issue. EVerything is up to date. Then I download software for the base station. WHich is easy, but since I get get to the wireless network, I can't load on the software. D'oh!
Don't know what to try next.
    thoughts?

I should add that I'm using an airport express base station. If I get this one working, I want to set up a second unit to extend my range.

  • How to Restore a Lost iPad (iPhone) without Wiping !!

This is not question. This is a solution.
I lost my iPad, it was found, and I thought it would be wiped as soon as I turned it on and it found iTunes.
But here's what I found, contrary to the what the 'Genius Desk' told me at the Apple store.
If you go out to iTunes with another device, log in, and delete the 'found' device from the 'Find My Phone' list, BEFORE power up of the lost device, it should work without being wiped. Typically, you have your iPad setup for only your own routers, so don't power it up in their presence. And just to be safe, don't power up near 'public' WiFi either. Until you get into 'Settings' and turn off WiFi on the lost iPad (or iPhone), you are in jeopardy of it being auto wiped.
And as Paul Harvey said: "And now... the rest of the story."  (You can skip the next part if you are an impertinent person with no regard for a classic tale.)
I lost my iPad 3 at the Denver airport in December's mad rush. My fault, nobody else's; I was furious with myself.
I submitted my claim at the airport lost and found, believing I would never see it again. (BTW, save yourself the trouble and use their online site.)
A friend of mine told me about 'Find My Phone', which also works for iPads. We logged onto iTunes, on his iPhone, with my password, and I was able see the name I had given my lost iPad. I told 'Find My Phone' to wipe my iPad and display my cell phone number on the screen, just in case someone "honest" found my iPad. I knew I had locked my iPad but I decided this was safest. They can always wipe it, but iTunes will never allow it's use, due to the original owner's serial number on file. It becomes a 'brick'.
    Segue, 2 months later.
I bought a new Air 2 because I need an iPad to run ForeFlight, a pilot program for navigation in small aircraft. One week later, I get an email from Apple, telling me to contact law enforcement at the airport (Lost and Found), and they even gave me the contact phone number to call. Sure enough, the airport found my iPad. The way I figure it, someone turned it in probably the day I lost it, and it took 2 months for Denver Airport to process the "mountains" of stuff they have turned in by travelers over the holidays. I was just happy I have it back. I took it directly to the Apple store to see if they could turn off the 'wiping' procedure and restore my old iPad. Nope! No can do! Once you tell it to wipe, through "Find My Phone", it's a done deal. Then I remembered something...
I had not set up Find My Phone on my old iPad, at least as far as I could remember. Maybe, just maybe, there was a way around this. Well... I found it.
I was told that if my iPad connected to WiFi, even it it were publicly open, it would connect to iTunes and automatically start the wiping process. Well, maybe.
Fortunately for me, Denver Airport Lost and Found had powered up my iPad, saw that it was passworded, hit the off button (so they thought) and instantly called Apple with the serial number on the back. That is what prompted Apple to email me. Thank you Apple! Actually, they had put it to sleep, not turning it OFF. Over 2 months, the battery went dead, a good thing.
When I got it home, I began to think about the power up sequence. This iPad had been setup to instantly connect to my home router. If I charged it, and it connected, I feared it might started wiping, so I devised a plan. Worst came to worst, it would wipe and I'd start over. Here's what actually happened.
I live far enough from town, that only a few WiFi routers exist nearby, and they are all encrypted. So, I turned off my router and let my iPad charge, just in case it tried to connect when it had enough charge to come out of deep sleep. Within about an hour, it was up and running again. I went into the settings and turned off the WiFi. Then, I turned my router back on. This allowed me to use my new Air2 to go out to iTunes and list all devices on Find My Phone. Lo, and behold, there was a list with my old iPad and my new Air2. I removed the old iPad from the list. Voila! It was gone!  Just to be sure, I copied any configuration I wanted onto my new iPad from my old iPad, manually. (This was more of a science experiment, so I was motivated to see if this worked. It's a geek thing.) When I was finished and ready, I re-enabled the WiFi on the old iPad. Sure enough, it connected instantly to my router, and nothing happened. The only thing it needed was 138 email updates, a few other things, and of course, an iOS update, performing flawlessly. My old iPad was back to normal. No wipe and just like I left it. There ya have it. A way out.
BTW, when I walked into the Apple store in Boulder, Colorado, they were all amazed that the Apple process had worked and I got my iPad back. Remember, I had been in there a week earlier and bought a new one, telling them my woes. That's when they told me it would be wiped, if ever found.
And what will I do with two iPads?  You guessed, sweetie wumpums gets the other one.

Force iPad into Recovery Mode. Follow step 1 to 5 very closely.

Note: You may have to repeat the above a few times.

  • Finally working!!

ok after a couple weeks i think i have it cracked!!
i have connected the TC to my linksys wireless router by ethernet (because the TC does not have an ADSL port) and then after restarting the TC, airport found it right away and then i added it to my existing wireless network (plus i now also have another SSID which is a 5GHZ one)
i think i included the option for bridge mode and viola now my macbook is all backed up and my imac is backing up as i speak
pretty fast as well, 1.8gb in a few mins!
only one thing, my macbook has 92gb used but when backing up, it only said backing up 1gb??
is this because it prob has the older backups on there from my many previous attempts to back up??
    thanks!

    Congrats on setting it up!
Just a couple of things, your Linksys router is in fact a modem/router combo, so it cannot be replaced by only a Time Capsule which is just a router. That's why the Time Capsule has no ADSL port. But it's great having a dedicated n-only network anyway Just be sure that you've connected the Linksys to one of your Time Capsule's LAN ports if it's running in bridge mode (which from the sounds of it, it is). This makes sure that computers connecting to the Linksys will see computers on the Time Capsule, and be able to access the Time Capsule's HDD.
Second, assuming that it isn't your first backup, the reason it's backing up only 1 GB is because only 1 GB of data has changed on your hard drive since the last backup. There's no need to back up the same data if it hasn't changed, right?

  • Time Capsule setup - can't connect properly

I'm having trouble setting up a new 2GB Time Capsule... a quick summary of the hardware and software:
    New 2GB Time Capsule
    MacBook Pro running 10.5.8
    AirPort Utility 5.5.1
There's already a wireless network up and running, and the TC will be hooked up to the broadband modem.
    This is what happens:
    1. I plug in the TC.
    2. It seems to start OK, and gets to the slow flashing amber light
    3. I select Apple Network xxxxxx in the menu bar - seems to select ok (actually, it turns out that it doesn't matter whether I do this step or not)
    4. I launch Airport Utility
    5. Time Capsule xxxxx appears at the top of the left column. In the right-hand panel, it says "Airport found a Time Capsule... yadda yadda... Click Continue to set up this Time Capsule".
    6. I click 'Continue'
    7. At this point, whether or not I have already selected the new Apple Network xxx, Airport Utility asks "Are you sure you want to switch wireless networks? Setting up this Airport wireless device requires switching wireless networks. Switching wireless networks may interrupt your connection to the internet."
    8. So I click 'Switch'.
    9. Airport Utility looks busy, and says "Reading the Time Capsule configuration" for a little while...
    10. It then says "Base Station Error. Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport device."
Same thing if I try 'Manual Setup' instead of 'Continue' at stage 6.
That's it. I can't get any further. I've tried doing a reset on the Time Capsule, and connecting via ethernet (as recommended for a first backup), but nothing seems to help.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule (TC).
Power down the TC and wait 5-10 minutes
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold the reset button in, plug the power back into the TC
Release the reset button after 8-10 seconds
Turn wireless off on your computer and temporarily connect a known, good ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC. Open AirPort Utility to see if this setup will allow you to configure the device.
Repeated restarts and scans can temporarily lock up the TC, so if you need to do the factory default reset again, power it down and wait for approximately 30 minutes before you reset the TC again.
If you try the factory default reset 3-4 times and AirPort Utility still cannot configure the TC, it is time to call Apple support for a probable replacement.

  • Got an error stating cannot join network.

So I recently got a used clamshell iBook Tangerine G3 and it came with an airport card. The airport found my airport extreme network, however when I try to connect to my network it said error joining network. Why? Is the card not compatible with my airport extreme base station? Do I need to change something?

Try disabling security and seeing if it works.
If it can connect to the network, then you know it's a problem with the Airport software or how the OS handles security.
If it doesn't connect without any security, then it's most likely a bad card.
Also, if it doesn't connect, you may want to try connecting it via Ethernet (if possible) and checking for updates - I know if it was recently wiped and the OS reloaded that there is at least an Airport update, along with possibly several OS updates, depending on the version of OS9 you have installed. One or more of the updates may fix your problem if it was a bug in the original software.

  • Help with clear instructions regarding media server

I have a Time Capsule that I just setup following the guide provided by Apple. It is setup so that it is connected by Ethernet to a router and now has its own network. I do not want to use it with Time Machine, what I would like to do is set it up as a media server for videos, music, pictures, ect. I have searched through the forums but have not been able to find a clear answer on how to do so. Also, while searching through the forums I believe that I read that someone set their Time Capsule up as a server and was able to access it wherever they went. How would I go about setting up my Time Capsule so that it can be used as a media server that I can access from different locations (for example, have the Time Capsule in Virginia Beach and be able to access it in Richmond)? Any detailed instructions on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

First using Airport Utility go to Disks button then file sharing tab. Check box "enable file sharing." Secure your disk. Check box "share disks over ethernet wan port."
Note when you first use Airport Utility under "page" airport found a TC write down that ip address example 10.0.1.1 and a second TC if you have one. Then under the internet tab write that ip address also something like 69.48.23.233
Check box "show servers on desktop" under Finder preferences.
Using Finder top file menu, select GO function "connect to server." you'll get a window blank. Type afp://ip address of your internal network ie router example 10.0.1.1 ; if you set a password enter it; your TC hard drive should mount to desktop; use it like your using in the Finder.
If you are away from your home network say Pittsburgh visiting and you forgot to take a file with you which is in Detroit. On a computer networked in PA then use the afp function GO command and use the internet ip address the example of 69.48.23.233 The TC hard drive should mount to the desktop.
Do not use the files as they are on the server, too slow and problems can occur because of the connection. Just download the file you need and give it time. I usually do mine just before bedtime so its there when I wake up.
    Hope this sets you straight.

  • Random connection drops

My kids have an eMac connected via Airport and wireless router to our cable internet. The systems works great, but randomly (and regularly) loses its connectivitiy. Sometimes it even tells me there is no Airport found! The wireless signal is sound, because I can access it just fine on a pc laptop used in the next room.
Often I can restart and all is fine, but sometimes even restarting doesn't work. What might be causing this?? My daughter is fit to be tied, and I am stumped.
    eMac Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Are the Airport drops truely random, or do they usually occur after a wake from system sleep? If the latter, the kludge workaround is to set System Preferences > Energy Saver to sleep the display only, with system and hard drive sleep set to never.
Also, check System Preferences > Network, Show: network Status, and if necessary, drag Airport to the top of the list (above Built-in Ethernet).
There have been persistient problems with some (but by no means all) user's setups dropping Airport connections. There doesn't seem to be any single consisitent common feature to those having the problem, nor any common fix. Some of the things mentioned as helping have been to check for router firmware updates, check for updated Airport software, and run the stand-alone OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC) if you updated to 10.4.9 via Software Update. If you have Parallels / Windows XP software, check for identical IP number conflicts. There are too many related threads on this problem in both the Airport and 10.4 Networking areas of the Discussions to be able to track them all, but those appear to be the most-suggested tips.
Another possibility: do the drops seem to correlate with calls in or out via a cordless 2.4 GHz phone? In that case, it could be interference from a noisey phone base. Swiching to a newer 5.7 GHz phone (or an older 800 MHz one) would help in that situation.

  • I can't connect to the drive on my airport time machine and am receiving the message: "AirPort Time Capsule" can't be opened because the original item can't be found.

Time capsule has been working perfectly for months.
Suddenly I can't connect to the drive on my airport time capsule and am receiving the message: “AirPort Time Capsule” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.
Time machine appears to be still backing up (last backup within the last hour), but drive is not visible and I have files stored on it.
I have tried rebooting everything in order as suggested for other issues, anyone got any ideas how to see the drive again??

    What OS are you running??
It is very typical Yosemite issue.
    1. In airport utility does the TC show up.. if so click it.. and see the summary page which will include its IP address. That is what you are after.
From my screenshot you can see the TC address is 192.168.2.57
It might well show up briefly after a reboot or in ipad / iphone version utility. Yosemite is hopeless. The airport utility hardly works.
    2. In Finder use Go, Connect to server.
Type in SMB://192.168.2.57 (replace with IP you discover).
If it is possible it will request a password.. type that in and DO NOT FORGET.. to store it in your keychain.
This will work until the TC changes IP which won't happen if it is main router.. but will happen if it is bridged.. so you need to tell me the whole network setup.
Mavericks is nearly as bad and the above instructions should be universal except I would use AFP instead of SMB. Apparently Yosemite is now totally Windows oriented.

  • "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.
AirPort Utility 6.3.1 for Mac - Support - Apple
Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message.
