No applications stack in dock

How do I get an applications stack in the dock - dragging the folder to the dock doesn't work.

For a visual, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3739
Notice that near the top of the article is an image of the dock. Item #3 on Apple's diagram is referred to as the "Dock Adjuster". It looks like a dashed line going off into the distance. You can only drop files or folders on the RIGHT side of that "Dock Adjuster" (if you drop a folder it will create a "Stack"). The left side of the "Dock Adjuster" is reserved for applications.
To do this with your "Applications" you just need to open Finder so that you can see the Applications folder. Double-click the hard drive icon on your desktop (probably named "Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it.). In the Finder window, drag the "Applications" folder to the right-side of the "Dock Adjuster" and drop.

  • Applications Folder in Dock won't stack

Placed Applications folder in dock but I don't know how to get it to stack. I recall having this function before but I must have done something to make it disappear. I've used control + right click but don't see a stack option.

when you right-click on it in the dock you should see the options to display it either as a folder or a stack. you need to run 10.5.2 or later to see those options which your profile indicates you have.

  • Application stack in the Dock

Anyone having issues with new application icons not showing in Application stack ?
It shows the new application installed with a general icon instead of the real icon. I would have to remove the Application stack and re-add it.

this looks to be a bug. submit a bug report.

  • Deleted applications folder in dock - how do I get it back??

    Hello
The applications stack in my dock has disappeared, can you help me get it back? If i drag in an alias of the applications folder it opens in finder, but i want to have it like the default.
    thanks all

If you put your Applications folder, not an alias, in the Dock (on the right part of the dock, you should get a stack of the applications popping up when you click on it. If you dropped an alias, this is no good, it will open Applications folder.

  • Applications Stack

I have had OS X Leopard on my computer since it was released, and for a while I had all of my apps in dedicated stacks. Recently I was cleaning up my computer and discovered DragThing and started using that instead, until it was suggested that I remove DT as it was slowing down my now-five-year-old computer.
So I am going back to stacks.
But... what I recall from my previous stack experience was that if an application update was downloaded the updated version would not end up in the stack. I would have to go in, remove the application from the stack, then replace it with the updated version.
Ok, so how can I avoid that rigorous process?
I want to make an Application Stack that I can forget about after I make it.

Create a folder of aliases to the applications you want in the stack. Use the aliases folder as the stack. As long as the applications are always in the same location to which the aliases points the stack should be fine even when the application is updated (provided the applications' names stay the same.) All applications should be installed in the Applications folder.
The above is unnecessary if you are using the entire Applications folder for the stack (drag the Applications folder to the right side of the Dock.)

  • Why did my Application Stack Disappear after I downloaded an OS update?

My Application Stack disappeared after I downloaded an OS update.  I can get it back as a folder on the dock but not the Application Stack. I am relatively new to Macs so maybe I missed something in the setup.

Right-click or Control-click on the Applications folder icon in the Dock. A popup menu will open. Select Stack from the Display As section.

  • Application Stack doesn't display proper app icon at first

    Hi everyone,
I have noticed that every time I have either installed an application or drug an app into my Applications stack in the dock, when I click the stack I get a default and crossed-out application icon (see here: http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6269/picture1df7.png and look the app 1001). The apps all open fine, but I have to drag the app to another location in Finder, like the desktop and then back in to the Applications folder for the icon in the Stack to display correctly. Odd and slightly annoying. Anyone else experiencing this? definitely a small bug.
    -William

    Yep, it's odd.
I don't have to move the application to fix things, simply opening the applications folder itself and launching the app from there will clear up the issue.

  • Issue with switching spaces via clicking application in the dock

    Hey guys,
Sometimes, not all the time, when I click on an application in the dock that has windows open in another space, it switches to the appropriate space, but with the application I clicked on not in the foreground. If I have other application windows open in that space, sometimes they occupy the foreground, and subsequently, the application I have clicked on on the dock is not in view. It is highly annoying when I click on the dock icon, to find that I have to go down and click on the dock icon a second time to bring the app into view. Does this happen to anyone else?
    Cheers guys,
    Ric.

    Thanks KXsig.
I've been upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4 last sunday. Since then, switching between different Spaces with Magic Mouse, i've got that issue of a third party application dedicated to Spaces number 6, and appearing also in background of Spaces 4 dedicated to Safari, or also in any free Spaces spot, when the application dedicated is not opened.
That didn't happened with Leopard, thanks a lot for the keyboard shortcut "Command + Tab".
Maybe a fix in 10.6.5 to come..

  • Opening mail application from the dock sometimes doesn't open window.

In Mountain Lion, sometimes when I open Mail on the dock with a single left mouse (or touchpad) click, the Mail application opens, as shown in the menu bar, but a mail window doesn't open. I must then click or double click on it to get it to open a window. No other application in the dock behaves this way. How can I fix this?

Is there a problem with mail opening from the dock?
NOPE!  Do you have open at login enabled?  Is Mail listed in Login Items through System Preferences?
My iMac is automatically up to date with all updates as at 09/01/2014.i

This could be a plist corruption problem, but I'm not sure.
Sometimes, the preference list files get corrupted. You can usually just remove them and they'll get re-created. This may require you to reset certain settings. A notable exception to this is the Mail plist which actually stores the Library structure of your email accounts. Deleting the Mail plist will definitely cause lots of problems, but is recoverable.
The plist files are stored in the /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ folder. They usually have the naming convention of com.company.programname.plist.
A simple troubleshooting technique is to move a suspect plist file out of the Preferences folder and start up the app, again. It will re-create the plist from scratch.
In your case, I would try the com.apple.dock.plist. You can use Activity Monitor to kill the Dock app and it will restart. Or, you can log out and log back in.
There is a new file with Leopard called com.apple.dock.db. I haven't figured out what it does, but you might try moving it out. If anything gets worse, you can move the old file back in replacing the newly created one.
This all sound somewhat odd, so I don't know if this will help.

  • Illustrator CS6 on Mac Yosemite keeps unhiding when minimizing or maximizing any other application from the dock

I am running Adobe Illustrator CS6 on my Mac,  I just upgraded to Yosemite OS and when I have Illustrator hidden and then minimize any other application to the dock - Illustrator pops back up. The same happens when I restore/maximize any other application that is minimized in the dock - Illustrator pops back up. However, if I have Illustrator minimized to the dock (not hidden) it doesn't do it.  Illustrator is the only app that does this - Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc... are all fine. It's not life threatening, just annoying.  Anyone have any ideas on this?

Odd... and you have only 1 instance of the apps (in other words you don't have Office 2008 anywhere on the system)?
Might want to try in http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support

  • HT2513 I have an iCal calendar downloaded and I can't find it in any calendar listings. I've read the above article, but I can't even find my iCal window (don't know where my applications folder or dock is and a search of the iPhone turns up nothing)...

I can't find my iCal window to try to get rid of this iCal calendar I downloaded, but want to delete. I can't seem to find the applications folder or dock that I've heard the iCal window is in. A search of the iPhone won't turn either up. Can someone please help?

have you tried rebooting your computer?

  • Application folder in Dock

First, I apologise if this has been asked before - there just were too many pages to search!
I accidentally deleted Applications from my Dock. How do I put it back?

To add to Matthew's point, when you open the Finder window, you'll see two panels. Shortcuts on the left in the sidebar, and (if you open the Finder from the Dock) your Home folder contents on the right. You will see an Applications shortcut on the left, but don't try to drag that to the Dock - since it's a sidebar shortcut, that will just remove it from the sidebar.
Click on the name of your hard drive (Macintosh HD, unless you renamed it) on the top left of the sidebar, then you'll see your drive contents on the right, which include the Applications folder. Drag that folder to the right side of the Dock.
    best,
    Matt
