  • External speakers popping/clicking sounds on new 24" iMac 2,8 GHz

    Hello everyone,
got a new iMac from Gravis in Germany and connected it via it's headphone jack to my external stereo amplifier and it emits clicking or popping sounds whenever I switch the light in my room on or off. I've used the same connection for my Windows PC and that is working fine - no pops or clicks. The problem also exists if the Mac is muted. I can not hear clicks or popping noises when I disconnect the external speakers and use the in-built ones.
I brought my Mac back to Gravis and explained the problem and they replaced the audio board and cabling. No success. The popping and clicking is still there. Replacing the audio cable with a better shielded one does not fix the problem. Turning the power connectors of amplifier and/or Mac 180° does not help also.
The problem seems to come from a bad shielding inside the Mac or the built-in power supply that is not capable of filtering the power surges.
I've found some threads but I'm not sure whether or not these issues are related. Some people seem to think that these problems are software related.
    A workaround could be:
    1) getting an online USV that disconnects the Mac from the power cabling
    2) using the digital output (toslink)
    3) getting an external Firewire or USB sound device for sound output
Neither of these three workarounds are options for me - I still want a fix for my Mac.
Anyone here who has the same problems?
    vex

    Hi Elvinio,
I'm trying to solve this problem by getting rid of the analog connection between Mac and stereo. I've ordered a digital 7.1 receiver for 250 Euro and a toslink cable for 20 Euro.
Another solution would be an online UPS. That UPS disconnects the Mac from the direct power source and delivers "freshly generated" and "perfect" current without disturbances.
I think that those pops are power surges that are not filtered by the Apple Mac's power supply. My ordinary Windows PC is not subject to clicking and popping sounds - so I suppose that either the power supply or the internal shielding of the Mac is crap.
I hope that those ugly pops are gone when I establish the new connection...
I will post the results of my not too cheap work-around.
    Regards

  • Does anyone know how to fix the settings when your your mac doesn't recognize your external speakers?? HELP! I've tried everything.

So, I have a macbook pro.  I used earphones to listen to music and everything worked fine.  A few hours later, after it had been unplugged, I tried to listen to a video and the sound did not work.  I have tried everything.  Rebooted my computer multiple times, reset the PRAM twice, and checked my MIDI setup.  When I go to sound through system preferces, this is what shows up: Output -- Digital out -- optical digital-out port and there is no option for external speakers!  It isn't even showing that I have them!!!  My internal settings are fine.  HELP please!

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Audio Drop Out/Popping sound Problem

    Hi,
For the last few weeks (since i installed snow leopard i think), i have been getting a lot of audio drop outs, where all of a sudden the sound goes dead and i get a popping sound coming from my speakers.
I am using a pre sonus fire studio project audio interface, with its firmware updated to the latest (the latest update was a beta snow leopard update).
I am running logic pro 8 with snow leopard 10.6.2.
I think i have narrowed the problem down to my presonus fire studio because i totally disconnected it and used logics built in audio soundcard and i didn't get any audio drop out at all.
I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or ideas and suggestions on what is best to do?
thanks in advance for any help.
    Tom

It depends, are you running off battery when this happens? If so then morethan likely it is the audio hardware coming back online. In an effort to conserve power, what Mac OS X does is when you are on battery is that it turns off your audio hardware when it has not been used for a certian amount of time. This popping sound is typical of the audio hardware being powered up.

Thank you for any info you can give me.      Bill,    [email protected]  I would perfer to get a message there also.

  • Sigmatel Audio Chipset and Popping Sound

I have an Intel iMac, which I purchased in April of 2006. Ever since I have had it it has had an annoying popping sound problem. The problem happens 4 times at startup. The problem is noticeable at the beginning and end of the computer playing a sound. Such as a system sound or changing the volume. If other audio, such as an mp3 or dvd is already playing the system sounds will not exhibit the behavior. This is because the audio chipset is already active. The problem happens because immediately after playing a sound the chipset goes to sleep and playing a new sound wakes it up, causing the popping sound. I have had it at the Mac store twice and they could not fix the problem. I have asked Apple to fix the problem or give me a refund. They stated that they will not do that. They also stated that they are aware of the issue and that Apple does not consider it a problem. It is a problem for someone like me who is a musician and uses the computer to produce music. You can only imagine how many pops and clicks I here while creating music. Apple released an audio update in July which sounds like it should fix the problem. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. I know the problem is unique to the Sigmatel hardware or software driver for the device because it has the same problem in other environments. I have Windows Vista installed on this same iMac using bootcamp and I have the exact same problem in Vista. So the problem (design flaw) is either with the Sigmatel hardware or any of the software written for the hardware. I also had an Intel motherboard, the D975XBX2, with a Sigmatel audio chipset on it. This board also had the same problem. I disabled the onboard sound and installed a Creative Audigy 2 ZS and the problem was not present. I do not know which audio chipset is being used in the new iMacs or the newer Macbook Pros, but I hope that Apple has switched to something besides the Sigmatel, because this is a very annoying problem (design flaw).

    Hi...OK...Tx for the article...L

External audio speakers will not play thro the jack in back of the IMAC , it worked before now will not . I checked the speakers , they are working fine.

Check to make sure that your external speakers a plugged firmly into the Output or headphone jack and not the Input or mic jack.

  • Audio gets delayed with Plugin - Help please!

I have a simple setup. Several external MIDI modules and an M-Audio Audiophile 192 PCI card in the G5. MIDI synth audio is mixed with the 192 audio externally on an analogue mixer.
All is well until I add a Linear Phase EQ plugin into the Main audio output in LP. Suddenly all the Audio is delayed slightly compared with the MIDI! If I bypass the plugin it's fine again. I thought there was a setting somewhere to compensate for this but darned if I can find it. Anyone?
    I'm using LP 7.2

    Go to Preferences ->Audio...->General
There you can change settings for Plug-in delay compensation.
If you want to play live, use Chanel EQ instead.
Also don't use the AdLimiter live.

  • No Audio - External Speakers - Running VISTA x64 Ultimate

I have seen numerous references to this problem in the forum archives... but no solutions yet.
I run Vista x64 Ultimate natively on the Mac Pro - no VMware or other emulation software.
Everything works great EXCEPT audio: I have searched and searched and need an expert.
All OSX, Firmware, and Bootcamp drivers are up to date.
Realtek Audio doesn't not recognize the rear external audio port. I plugged in / out / in etc., nothing. All audio comes from the internal tower speaker.
My speakers use the standard analog jack, they are new Bose MusicMonitor speakers.
    Things I have done:
Vista Audio Settings - all ok, all set to max, double checked - nothing.
New Realtek Audio Drivers - tried installing newer version - nothing.
    Reinstalled Bootcamp Drivers - nothing.
Reinstalled Bootcamp Drivers (original disk) + Bootcamp Vista Drivers (new release) - nothing.
BTW - the speakers work just great under OSX - they produce awesome sound - so it's not a hardware issue.
Thanks - I hoping someone has discovered a solution!

    P.S. I have the X-Fi Platinum.
I left that out in my original post.

  • Macbook to 42" Olevia Sound Help Please..

I just bought my olevia and hooked it up with my macbook
by mini dvi to dvi to hdmi and it looks amazing!
But how do I get sound to come from the tv? Like the clicking
and music from itunes to come out of the tv speakers so i can watch movies?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks.

You'll have to run a separate audio cable from the Mac to the TV. DVI doesn't carry audio. Or you can connect a set of powered speakers to your Mac.

  • IPod 2nd Generation Internal Speakers Not Working - HELP PLEASE!

A couple of days ago my ipod's internal speakers stopped working, the volume control dissapeared and no sound was coming out. Now, when i have my headphones in, music will be playing but every so often they will cut out and again, the volume control bar will dissapear. I then have to remove the headphones and put them back in. I've tried resetting the ipod and turning it on and off, no change.
Any help to solve it please? or is this the end of my trusty ipod?
    Ashlee

    Welcome to the discussions,
try to restore "as new ipod", don't use your backup to get your settings back to your ipod, it may contain the corrupt files causing this problem.
Make sure you transferred your purchases and synced your contacts/calendars before you start.

  • HT1338 I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine on my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive.  It was going fine when my 2 yo knocked the hard drive.  Now TM said "failed" and the Mac refuses to recognize the external hard drive.  Help please?

I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine and using my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive.  All was going well when my 2 yo knocked the disk leading to a "failure" by time machine (Latest Backup:  Failed).  Now the MacBook will not even recognize the hard drive.  I have rebooted, tried all I can think of, but no acknowledgement of the drive.  The drive itself makes noise and vibrates as if working, but nothing from the Mac.  Please help or $100 down the drain...  Thank you.

You may have already done these resets in the "tried all I can think of " portion of your post.....if not then here they are.....

    aye, indeed.
that's why i suggested the OP searches the forum for information on both drives
personally, i swear by LaCie drives. i like drives sold by [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire> too. alas, they seem to have no NAS on offer ...
