No audio from avi file-PE4 & Vista 64
I looked at the post for this topic from Adobe. Did all the steps regarding the audio driver for not hearing audio from ALL clips. I can hear any sound from the headphones jack for ANY audio device. And the AVI file plays back with sound in WMPlayer and in Windows Movie Maker. When I go to Preferences, Audio hardware, default device - the ONLY device listed is the Premier Elements Windows Sound. Beneath it is the ASIO settings. That contains the proper setting for the Realtech sound card. I am not able to select the ASIO device as the new default device. I followed the Adobe post closely but I still get no sound output from PE4. What next?
I do show the ASIO button in the Audio Hardware window.
The only reason that mine does not show on the screen-cap is because it fades out in the GUI, when it's open.
Did we determine that when this file is played, in say WMP, you do get Audio? Unfortunately, with the new forum software, I can't see anything, except the post to which I am replying. [Edit] Yes we did.
Did you have any luck with ASIO4ALL?

I want to capture just the audio from avi file. Here is what I did. I dragged the avi into garage band and saw a separate audio and video track. I tried to import the just the audio into itunes but it would only let me import both video and audio. I decided to burn the audio to cd and then import it into itunes. This seemed to work but I would like to know if there is a better method. I figure there must be. Anybody out there tried this?
i'm not near my GB machine to test this, but see if you can Share to Disk and make sure the Compress checkBox is not selected.

Encore adds random static (Popping and Crackling) to audio from AVI files
We spend the whole day today trying to debug this problem... any help would be greatly appreciated.
We have a large conversion project where we are capturing VHS videos and converting them to DVD.
For those that require chapters, we are using Encore CS4.
All of the videos were captured the same way, in an AVI format.
We have found that when we load them into an Encore CS4 timeline, we will hear random static sounds -- pops in the audio.
We believe the AVI file is clean. We can watch the video in Windows Media Player, and the audio is fine. We can burn the AVI file to a DVD video using another low-end package (Power Director) and the DVD is fine. The AVI files have been run on other systems, and the audio crackling sound does not present itself.
But when we try to use Encore, some of the files exhibit the crackling sound. (Note that not all of the files have this problem. But those that do exhibit the problems will exhibit them every time.)
We tried loading them into Premier -- same thing.
So, this problem seems to be limited to Adobe tools.
We are running Windows 7 on an Intel i7, ATI Radeon card... a really fast, strong, stable system.
At this point we're not sure what to try...
We have attempted to pre-encode them using Adobe Media Encoder. Same results, regardless of which audio settings we try.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

PE 10 missing audio from *.avi files?
Hi,
New PE 10 installation. When I add a *.avi file to the timeline or sceneline, I am missing the audio tracks. Don't see the audio tracks. Even when I press the Play button above, there is only video and no audio. But in the Media section, when I select "Edit Original", the avi file plays with audio fine. What am I doing wrong?

I have Quicktime PRO and need to edit some avi files. Upon opening up some DIVX files, I have lost the audio. Their is a prompt saying I need some plug ins and dropped me on the quicktime plugin page. I read through all the plug ins but I am not sure what the problem is.
Does anyone know how I can bring back the audio in these files? Many thanks.

No longer audio on .avi files when attempting to use Elements 9
I have compiled 20 years of videos from family videos and converted them to .avi files. I now want to edit these files into other smaller videos to give to my children. I have Premiere Elements 9. When I get one of these files using PE9 there is no longer audio on them.
There is audio if I play them on Windows Media Player but no audio on Quicktime Player.
I can edit in Windows Movie Maker but not in PE9.
The Quicktime Player states the following:
Format: Motion JPEG Open DML, 640 x 480, millions
Movie FPS 29.97
Playing FPS 29.97
Data Size 1.94 gb
Data Rate 8.67 mbits/sec
Normal Size 640 x 480 pixels
Current Size 640 x 480 pixels
I have a Dell Inspiron 530, 4.0 gb RAM, 32- Bit Windows Vista system. Plenty of Hard Drive availability.
I purchased PE9 because I thought it would be superior to Windows Movie Maker. Very frustrated.Hi Bill,
The .avi file is a compilation of videos from multiple cameras from over the years. There is no 1 camera. That is why I am confused here.

What camera produced the MJPEG files, wrapped in the AVI container? The reason that I ask this, is because camera mfgrs. love to tweak CODEC's, and some take that tweaking to an extreme. If you have the utility disc, that came with the camera, it is probably best to install their particular version of the MJPEG CODEC. The Morgan, or the MainConcept might work OK, but having the exact version, from the camera mfgr. will get you as close, as is possible, and will save having to buy an MJPEG CODEC, that might not be perfect. Now, on that utility disc, one might have one of three possible choices: The MJPEG CODEC might be a separate installationThe MJPEG CODEC might install along with the camera's driverThe MJPEG CODEC might install with an included editing/cataloguing program (most common nowadays), and even if you do not use that utility, having the proper version of the MJPEG CODEC installed on the system, will get you as close, as is possible Good luck, and let us know if you have the utility disc for that camera. Burning DVD's from .avi files
What exactly do I have to do to use iDVD 6 to make a DVD from .avi files?
What exactly do I have to do to use iDVD 6 to make a
DVD from .avi files?
The .AVI format is just a wrapper for many different ways of storing audio/video - some 'flavors' work in iMovie/iDVD and some don't.
I have a video camera that produces a 'flavor' of .AVI file that requires VisualHub at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ so that I can convert the files into DV video files that CAN be used in iMovie/iDVD. -
Hi,
I wasn't sure where to post this question. I didn't see a forum that looked apropriate, and since I'm using an iMac G5 I thought this one was as good as any other. So, what I'm after is software that will allow me to extract audio from AVIs, MPGs, etc. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
AndrewHi,
Just wanted to follow up on my original post. I first tried using a freeware AVI spitter called Explicit, then importing the 9-12 minute pieces into iMovie. There was a few problems with this method, though. First, it took around 15 minutes to import one 9-12 minute AVI segment. Second, after it was imported and converted into DV format (the format iMovie uses) it was something like a gig in size. Lastly, the audio, the thing I was after, was completely mangled. So, I downloaded Divx Doctor 2, converted the AVI, and then was able to use Peak (a great audio editing program by BIAS) and was able to extract all the audio and save it as AIFF. I could have actually saved it to any one of several formats, at 16 or 24 bits, for those who aren't familiar with the program. By the way, you can convert more than AVIs with Divx Doctor 2.
Thanks so much for the link! Hopefully this info will help someone else looking for to get samples from movies. -

If all you want is to create a backup of some file you can do:public class Foo
public static void main(String[] args) {
Foo f = new Foo();
f.createBackup("something.xls");
public void createBackup(String inFile) {
FileInputStream in = null;
FileOutputStream out = null;
try {
in = new FileInputStream(inFile);
out = new FileOutputStream(inFile + ".bak");
int read;
while ((read = in.read()) > -1) {
out.write(read);
out.flush();
} catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} finally {
if (in != null) {
try {
in.close();

No audio with .avi files.
This has just started to occur recently, probably with the latest update to QT. When I play a .avi file, the video shows up fine, but the audio is strangely absent. My computer volume isn't muted, nor is the volume on Quicktime itself. Any thoughts or explanations?
I have had this problem for a couple of years on all of my Macs across various OS and QT versions and as yet have not resolved it.
I have tried removing the XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha component from HDD/library/quicktime/components, as suggested by another user here but this has still not resolved it on my system.
There is a simple work around if you simply wish to watch these movies with sound.
Download VLC player (It's a free application) and here is the link. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
This will play your AVI files complete with sound without any problems.
I know it is not exactly a fix for the problem but id does offer you a solution to being able to watch your movies with sound. Hope this is of use to you.
Cheers

I'm trying to put all my wife's videos from her Casio Exilim camera into one continuous video, but when I open them in Final Cut there's no audio with them. And there is no audio if I open them up in Quicktime also. We've been adding the videos over a period of a year now, and I know that they have had audio before. I can also take the video clips from my Mac and play them on my Windows computer with Windows Media Player, and the audio plays on it. So I know the audio is still there along with the video clips since it plays on my PC, but why isn't it playing in Final Cut or Quicktime? They are also AVI video clips if that helps.
Your avi files need to be converted to QuickTime in order to work with them in FCE. That may or may not be your audio problem.
You can use MPEG Streamclip, a free utility, for the conversion:
http://www.squared5.com/
Open your avi file in Streamclip and export to QuickTime with the following settings (for standard def dv in the USA):
Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Frame Size: 720 x 480
Audio should be AIFF @48kHz. -
How can I batch replace audio in .avi files without re-encoding?
I have hundreds of .avi files that have two audio channels. One channel contains the audio from the original video footage, and the other channel contains speech-shaped noise that was added later.
I need to replace the speech-shaped noise with a different type of noise (multi-talker babble) without re-encoding the video and degrading its quality. I would like to be able to do this in a batch process if possible. Do any of you have an idea about how to approach this in Premiere Pro?
Some more details: each .avi file is about 2-3 seconds long, so I would need the replacement noise to be the same length as the original noise.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Using -replace:

Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.
Download & install the free VLC Media Player. This player plays all .avi files.
