No audio from components plugged into audio in jack

I'm trying to convert old cassette tapes to digital format to eventually burn to CD's. I've followed all instructions for hooking up an external tape deck to the audio in jack. I have the correct cable (same Belkin cable I use to have iTunes play through my stereo via Airport Express). I've changed the input under system preferences to audio in jack and can see the sound registering but I can't get any sound whether it's through the internal mic or the mini-speakers. I downloaded Audacity to assist and it is just recording static. Seems so simple but I need help...Thanks

Thanks for the response. I tried downloading some of those audio in playback programs but I am on OS 10.3.9 and they all seem to be geared towards 10.4 + so they did not work. I have determined that my audio in jack works and can record music with my set up and play it back with sound once recorded through Audacity. Now I am just trying to get the computer to play the music out loud from the cassette player so I can actually play the cassettes to determine where to start stop for recording. I can't get any audio output until it's been recorded. I need it during playback. Thanks.

  • Do I have to leave my phone plugged into the test jack???

I don't understand how this works. The test jacks are in my living room coat closet, so do I have to leave my phone plugged into those? Or do I plug them into one of the jacks on the back of my modem?? If I have to leave the phone in the closet that is super inconvienent since the cords are barely long enough. HELP!!

It seems that what you are calling "test jacks" are the (usually) two RJ-11 jacks inside the ONT.  "RJ-11" is the standard 4-wire phone jack, and "ONT" means "Optical Network Terminal" which is where the Verizon fiber is connected to your networks and devices.  These jacks are not for testing but are used to connect telephone devices and networks to the fiber optical network.
If you do not have other locations where RJ-11 jacks exist then the only location that will give telephone service at present is at the ONT.  The jacks in the rear of the router are used for Internet connections only, and are referred to as "RJ-45."  They have nothing to do with your telephone service.  Note that an RJ-11 plug will actually fit and connect using an RJ-45 socket, but the reverse is not possible.
You have at least two options.  You can run cables from the ONT to selected locations and fit RJ-11 jacks.  This usually means running concealed cables and may take a bit of doing.  This can be done by a regular user, but usually involved some specialized techniques and tools.
Alternatively you can connect a wireless base station in the closet at the ONT, and then use the "slave" units for regular service.  Let us know if this sounds like a good idea or if you have additional questions.

  • Help with audio out when plugging into 3.5" jack on a MacBook's combo input

With my old iMac, I used to plug my guitar into the 3.5" microphone jack* and either used the computer's speakers or plug headphones into the separate headphone port for audio out.
Now I have MacBook Air with a headphone/mic combo port. I checked the sound settings in System Preferences and couldn't select speakers for external audio. Is there a way to assign audio-out to the speakers and keep audio-in assigned to the mic/headphone port? Or am I going to need to buy some dongle or adapter now?
*How did I connect a guitar to the 3.5" port? I used a generic computer speaker wire (3.5" on each side) and plugged a 3.5" to 1" adapter (the kind you use for stereo headphones) into the guitar.

    Hi Tim -
Please bear with me because I am no Apple expert. However, I do remember reading something that might help you out.
You wrote that you store your sound libraries are installed on an external drive. Someone, who posted either here or on another Logic bulletin board, basically stated that problems may occur if an external hard disk drive that carries the sound libraries is FAT32 or NTFS formatted (formatted for a Windows-based computer). Apparently, an external hard disk drive utilized for sound libraries should be formatted as *Mac OS Extended* (not journaled). (I hope that someone more expert on this subject will either validate this claim or suggest another option.)
Try doing a Search in this forum for more information on this subject. But I think how that external drive is formatted might make a difference on performance for the Mac computer.
I come from the PC world as well. I like both the Apple and PC systems. But I really like working with the Logic program.
    Good luck to you
    Ted

  • Why is it that my ipod is quieter than others when plugged into an auxilary jack?

When I plug my ipod into a car auxiliary jack it is really quiet, and I know it isn't just the jack because my friend's ipod is much louder. Is there any way I can fix this?

    sstormyturner wrote:
The volume limit helped, but how do I check to see what kind of ipod it is?
Well, in what country did you buy it?  This would only apply if you bought it in an EU country.
You may have Sound Check enabled (Settings/Music/Sound Check). While the intent is to even out volume differences between tracks, the net effect seems to be a lowering of volume output for all tracks.

  • Whats causing the battery to discharge on ipod touch when nothing is plugged into the output jack and not using the ipod?

  • My MacBook Air won't turn on, despite being fully charged, and plugged into the power jack.  What should I try?

I double checked the power connection, it's good.  The charge light is green, so it should be charged and turn on, right?  When I push the power button--nothing no startup sounds, nothing on the screen, keys don't light up.  It's completely dead, as if it is powered off.  I don't know if this could be having an effect on it...I upgraded to the latest operating system (Yosemite) a couple of days ago. After that, it wouldn't recognized our Epson WIFI printer.  The printer was visible as an option under print, but when selected there was a message saying it wasn't connected.  Even after going through the steps to add it agaiIn, after printing one document, then trying to print the next, the "printer was not connected" again. I gave up and shut it down for the day. Used it last night without any issues (except for being unable to print.). Now, this morning, nothing.

  • No Audio From Headphones When Plugged Into The Jack

I have plugged numerous amounts of earphones into my only headphone jack. I know that the earphones work, because when they are plugged into other devices, they work just fine. But, when any earphones are plugged into the headphone jack, I only hear sound
from my laptop speakers that are built in. The sound worked the very first time I plugged in my earphones, but now they don't work.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • Toslink/Analog combined audio output jack

I want the computer speakers to work even when I have an audio cable plugged into the output jack. Using a standard 3.5mm cable the computer speakers cut out when the cable is plugged in.
If I order and use the Toslink cable, will the computer speakers still cut out? Or, is there nay other way to make this work?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Denny and I have the original Intel Core Duo. Some folks with the later Core 2 Duo, elmac comes to mind, have said that they are offered more sound configuration options in the System Prefs/Sound/Output pane. Some have reported having music and the audio from video emit from external speakers, while the system sounds only emit from the internal speakers.
My only evidence it may be possible, is that the Startup Chime on my iMac emits from the internal speakers even when my external speakers are plugged in and I hear it even if the external speakers are turned off.

  • Pop / Click Sound when mic plugged into iPad

Is anyone else having an issue with a faint 'pop' heard when using a mic to record audio into the ipad through the headphone jack?
I've tried using the iPhone earbuds w/ built-in mic and 3 different iRig Mics at the local music store - each time, the same result.
When I am using any audio recording program that accepts the mic input (Garageband, free iRig recorder, Vocalive, etc.) I hear a faint 'pop' every 20 seconds or so. It is pretty quiet compared to the audio input, but is loud enough to be heard when trying to record good quality audio.
At first I thought it was an issue with the iRig Mic but after testing with the iPhone earbuds/mic, it appears that the issue pops up whenever there is an input device plugged into the headphone jack.
Can anyone confirm or provide a suggestion for how to remedy this problem?
    Cheers. Dale

    Anyone?
I've confirmed a slight regular 'pop' or 'click' on my iPad2 every 20 secs or so whenever an input is used in the headphone jack. Can hear it when turned up high. Shouldnt be a processing power issue because I can replicate even in the simplest of recording programs without an additional processing.
Confirmed with iPhone earbuds w/ mic, with ampkit guitar interface and irig imic (x3 different ones at the store).
Frustrated because this negates using my ipad for recording purposes

  • Can it be plugged into a car

i was wondering if the Airport can be plugged into a car jack
i need to have wireless in my car im going on a long trip w/ my family
    help

While some vehicles provide 110 volt outlets, most do not.  To do that you need what is called an inverter.  An inverter changes DC current (12 volts in this case) to AC 110 volts.  You need an inverter that can supply an adequate amperage for whatever device you need to run or charge.  The inverter will have one or two outlets for plugging in common household devices.
In my car (a Honda CR-V) I have a two outlet inverter plugged into the car's accessory outlet in the rear cargo area.  From there I've run a heavy extension cord along the floor, under floor mats, to the front.  From that I can plug in chargers or any passenger could plug in their notebook, etc.
The question you will need to answer in case of your AirPort, however, is how will you connect the AirPort to the Internet?  The AirPort has no native modem to access an ISP.  If you have a cellular device with hotspot capability, or a satellite dish with Internet service, or are parked where you can connect to an ISP modem such as , WiMax, DSL or cable, and can connect one of those to your AirPort, you will be OK.

  • Music only plays thru the speakers by inserting a plug in the headphone jack. pavilion dv6-6127cl

    HP Pavilion dv6-6127cl  (Notebook PC)
I have spent over 6 hours on the phone with tech support, but I remain unable to have any sounds go directly to my built-in "Beats" speakers.   I can make the speakers work if I insert a plug into the headphone jack on the keft side of the notebook.  If I plug in headphones to listen, I do get sound out of my headphones, but I also get sounds out of the builr-in soeakers.  Tech Support insisted that either I spilled liquid onto my keyboard. (I did not),  I dropped the notbook. (I did not), or the my computer was infected with a virus.
I doubt that this problem was virus related, because the problem happened during a 4 month period that I had no internet service.  To be certain there are no viruses, I took the extreme action of restoring my notebook to the factory condition.  I still have the same problem.
During my 6 hour troubleshooting marathon, the support technician had me update my BIOS and initiate many lengthy self-test procedures, all to no avail.
Please send me information on who to send this laptop to for repair or replacement under the original warranty.
I also have another issue.  Tech support claims that my notebook warranty expires in November, but I purchased this notebook from Sam's Club brand-new, in an un-opened box in mid-January 2012.  How can this date be explained and/or corrected?
    Many Thanks,

    Hello spl1080,
Your headphone jack is not working correctly on the laptop.
Was everything working correctly before you upgraded to Windows 8?
I know that you said that you updated the driver, but did you try the driver for Windows 7 and 8.
Here are the links for the drivers.
    Windows 7
    Windows 8
If you are planning on sending it in to HP to have it repaired they will make you run a recovery before you send it in.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

You can copy the pages files on your Mac into the file sharing section of iTunes. Then sync your iPad. The files will be copied to your iPad. There is a link to the iPad manual in the bookmarks of safari on your iPad. Download and view the manual especially the section on sharing with iTunes.

  • No audio output on speakers plugged into 3000 H210

I recently purchased a 3000 H210 57094408 running Vista home premium Service Pack 2 (all recent Vista updates have been installed).
With speakers plugged into the back output port, I was able to open Lenovo HD Audio Manager and obtain test tones in stereo through my speakers.  I couldn't, however, get audio from iTunes, YouTube, etc., nor could I get test sounds in Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound->Sounds.  In Control Panel->->Sound->Playback, I noticed that there were two speakers shown, one Realtek HD speaker that was "working" and the USB Audio CODEC speakers I'd plugged in, which were also "working" and demonstrating audio levels in the status bar to the right of the speaker icon (I was playing music in iTunes while checking the settings).  I made sure the cheapo speakers were selected as the default, but still no sound was coming out of said speakers -- the same speakers that had made the test sound noises in Lenovo HD Audio Manager.
I suspected the HD speakers (the nature of which I knew not) were interfering with my cheapo speakers, so I disabled them, and they no longer appear in the list of speakers.  Now Lenovo HD Audio Manager shows no speakers at all, and the test tone option isn't available to me in that application.  Control Panel->->Sound->Playback still shows my cheapo speakers, but they do not even register sounds from iTunes anymore.  Both speakers appear in Device Manager, but I have no idea what the Realtek speakers are supposed to be -- no speakers were included with the Lenovo box.  If they are necessary (i.e., not really speakers but the method by which the sound card communicates with the speakers), how do I get them back up and running?
Per the User Guide, I have reinstalled the driver for the audio card (Realtek audio ALC 888/662 VISTA driver), but that hasn't done anything.  I'm out of options at this point and would love any guidance!  Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Update (and a successful one, no less)!  After an extended remix call with Lenovo support, we uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the Realtek controller (found in Device Manager under the sound controllers), which solved the problem.  Guess the controller driver had been corrupted, which is why it could work in the HD Audio Manager program but couldn't in the other applications.  Anyway, thought I'd post the solution in case anyone else has the no audio issue -- they can avoid some of my detours and missteps!

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!
