No audio from headphones

I recently purchased 2 new latitude E6440 laptops with Windows 7. The speakers work well but when I plug in headphones the sound still comes from the speakers and the not the headphones. Any help on how can I fix this?

Do you have another pair of external headphones/earphones/speakers to test with? Does the said headphones work fine on another device? Could you open Dell Audio from control panel and check if the headphones are detected under the advanced tab -> jack info - see the pic
If it doesn't show up here, then open mydell -> pccheckup -> custom test -> run a custom test on the headphones/speakers. Also restart the system, press f12 -> select diags and check if the headphones have audio while in diags.
Go to support.dell.com - http://bitly.com/WBoajG - enter the service tag -> select drivers and downloads -> run the BIOS update and reinstall the audio drivers and check.

10.9.4 upgrade - Audio from headphone jack overdriven

I have a 24-inch, Early 2009 iMac. 3.06 Core 2 Duo.
Using it as a projection computer at my church, running iTunes and ProPresenter 5.
After upgrading to 10.9.4 last week, the audio coming out of the headphone jack is distorting really badly at about the 1-1.5khz range. I have to turn the system audio down well below half to get the signal to to come through weakly enough to not sound overdriven. I first discovered this problem in iTunes, but it is doing the same thing for any media (Spotify, ProPresenter, Quicktime, Youtube through a browser, etc.). I know way more about sound systems than I do about computers, but it sounds to me like the system is telling the preamp in the headphone jack to run at way higher gain than it can safely put out. The audio from this jack isn't any louder than it was with the previous OS, just distorted now.
After reading some other forum posts about audio ceasing to work after the upgrade, I downloaded the 10.9.4 combo install from Apple.com and reinstalled it that way. Before that I tried a recovery install. No luck either way.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

I know how frustrating sound issues can be. One troubleshooting step I would definitely recommend in this situation would be to reset the NVRAM / PRAM. Please use the following article as a reference and let me know if the issue continues after the reset.

Audio from headphones gets distorted when switched to "entertainment mode" w

the sound quality from my headphones gets messed up whenever I switch to "entertainment mode." when i say "messed up," i mean the volume would constantly fluctuate from really high to just noise then high again.
however, when i switch it to "game mode" all the problems disappear.
why are my headphones (sennheiser pc50) not compatible with "entertainment mode?"
i have a creative x-fi xtrememusic card.

I had a similar problem using X-Fi Fatalty. By similar I mean everything worked until switching to entertainment mode. When in entertainment mode all audio had a horrible amount of loud static and noise riding on it. This wasn't limited to headphones though as the same occurred using my 2. speaker system. I was using the latest driver, from June of '06 I believe.
I rolled back to the driver on my install CD (version 5.2.2.43 dated 8/8/2005)and it solved the issue.

No Audio From HeadPhone Jacks !! ? !!

Out of the blue, both the headphone jacks placed infront of the laptop WONT work !! This is utterly frustuating as the laptop speakers are working fine. I didnt change anything prior to the 2 headphone jacks stopped working.
I searched over internet and tried so many things but, unfortunately the issue has boosted my frustuating levels. Im sure there are so many people who face this problem and still not able to get the audio jacks working.
IS there ANY solution for this? HP should be in a position to look into the matter and resolve this ridiculous issue.

do you have idt audio monitor? (if you do there will be an icon in your sys tray). if so go to run msconfig an administrator and disable idt from the startup programs. restart you unit and see if your jack is working. let me know what happens.

K7N2G-L no cd audio from headphone jack

Can someone please help me I have a K7N2G-L motherboard and I cant get it to play music cds through the cd roms headphone jack. When I play a music cd it plays through the external speakers but does not play in the cd roms headphone jack. This is a motherboard problem because when I replace the onboard sound with a separate sound card it plays like this. I would like to use the onboard sound any suggestions ive tried.
-swapping the cd rom the cd data and cd audio cables (they are in the right way)
-updated the audio drivers to nvida latest
-upgrading the bios
-gone through all the windows xp audio controls.
The only thing I can think of to do next is to rebuild the system as 98 to rule out a any possible software cause

if you use xp music cd are played by drawing the sound from the ide cable and not the sound cable.
its digital and analog playback.

Audio from headphone jack stops working.

Hello.
When I play back audio on my MacBook pro in Traktor Pro, iTunes or even VLC it comes out my internal speakers like normal. If I plug my headphones in it will start coming out my headphones like it should and if I unplug them it comes back out my speakers again and it all seems to be ok. However if I close the lid and let the computer sleep, when I wake it up it will play audio out the speakers but if I plug my headphones in again they won't work and the sound will continue to come out of my internal speakers (while headphones are still plugged in). If I go into my audio settings it just says internal speakers and when I plug my headphones in it goes away and then the computer says it has no Audio device installed, if I goto adjust my volume with the key on the keyboard I get the speaker with the circle with the slash thought it if as to say volume cannot be done. The only way for me to get sound back from my headphones is to restart the computer. I don't know why it is doing it and have no idea what would be causing this. Is anyone able to help me out with this.? It's so frustrating having to restart my machine all the time as I am a DJ and run my DJ software and deck controllers from it. I have a mid 2011 17" MBP running Lion osx 10.7.2 (all software up to date as of 05-01-12) 8GB Ram.

You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

Distorted audio from headphone socket after iOS 5 update!

Hi,
I have an iPad2, and just yesterday updated my iOS to version 5.1.
Everything went fine until I checked some audio via my headphone socket this morning. It was grossly overdistorted. I used another pair of headphones and the same thing happened, it either didn't work or cut out, or was grossly distorted. I then checked each headphones and found they worked well on my iPhone.
So is this a problem with the software or my iPad? Anyone have an idea? I don't want to pay for repair if this is an update issue.

No Audio From Headphones When Plugged Into The Jack

I have plugged numerous amounts of earphones into my only headphone jack. I know that the earphones work, because when they are plugged into other devices, they work just fine. But, when any earphones are plugged into the headphone jack, I only hear sound
from my laptop speakers that are built in. The sound worked the very first time I plugged in my earphones, but now they don't work.

No audio from headphone jack

I've just taken delivery of a new 24" iMac and while setting it up have noticed that plugging external speakers or headphones into the headphone jack does not disconnect the internal speakers, or play sound through the external device. In the output tab of Sound preferences it only shows 'Internal Speakers' even if external speakers are connected.
SMC reset hasn't helped. I've seen a couple of threads mentioning this issue, but no obvious solution. Any ideas?

Yes. When a plug is inserted in the headphone jack (regardless of whether the
plug is connected to anything) the Sound preference panel should immediately
indicate "Headphones" or "Digital Out" (depending on the type of plug). If it
still says "Internal Speakers", something is wrong. Either the headphone jack is
defective or the physical dimensions of the plug are abnormal.
BTW, that's how it works on my 20" late-2006 white iMac running 10.5.1 --
I believe it's the same on other models and OS revs, but I can't be 100% sure.

T430: Audio problem when hearing from headphones

The Audio from the Headphones is not proper for my T430.
I updated the Audio drivers of Realtek. Looked for multi-stream.
I could play a song and hear the music properly from the headphones. But audio and other sounds seem to be squeezed.
I could jardly make out the lyrics. I checked the equilizer and everything. Nothing seems to be working.
I even tried the audio from headphones options in control panel and I couldn't find it.
Please help me.

So the music is played over top of the sounds? Do you have a program on the computer called 'Dolby Advanced Audio'? If you do, there are several presets in it that drastically change the sound levels. This is just a suggestion from me, but I'll try to help!

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv9730us Notebook and not playing sound. Here is a document on troubleshooting sound. Please remove the headphones for troubleshooting.
Here is another step to try.
1. Right click speaker icon (right hand corner)
2. Select Playback devices
3. Right click Speakers
4. Enable it and set as Default
5. Click Apply/Ok
A windows update KB2962407 could have caused the no sound. Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update. Right click it and select Uninstall.

No audio on headphones

Problem: No audio from headphone jack.
Laptop: Satellite S55-B5280
Troubleshooting so far:
Mute is off and volume level is up.
Laptop audio works fine.
Laptop audio works when headphones are plugged into jack.
Headphones does not display on playback devices including disabled and disconnected devices. Only speakers displays.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Conexant Smart Audio HD driver in device manager under Sounds, Video, Game controller.
Installed latest device driver from Toshiba website.
Headphones remain inop. Please advise on further troubleshooting. Thanks.

This is not a software issue. The Audio jack is designed to function as both an Audio in and Audio out. You need an audio splitter similar to what Apple has, the one that splits the Microphone jack and the headphone jack.

How do I get audio from my macbook pro to my receiver with higher quality than the headphone jack?

I recently got a receiver and surround sound speaker system. The quality of the audio from the CD player connected to it is far beyond the quality of the audio that comes from the MacBook pro via headphone jack to RCA connection. This was confirmed by burning a CD from the MacBook, placing it in the CD player then testing the two against each other - the same audio piece from the CD player or the MacBook, both connected to the same receiver/speaker set up. What other options might get better audio quality from the MacBook to the receiver?

The Mac's audio output doubles as a optical Toslink stereo mini jack, just use a adapter to regular Toslink and plug the optical cable to your surround sound system. Fiddle with the sound settings to enable optical output.
Mac's pass surround sound through, they don't do any processing.

Macbook 2008 no audio from speakers - can't disable digital audio - red light in headphone jack

Looking for help with this problem, that seems like a lot of people had in the past and still have, but I see that a couple of discussions on it here have been archived. Too bad, as the problem continues.
I seem to be having the same problem with my late 2008 white 2.1Ghz Macbook.
I had used earphones a few times with movies and iTunes, with no problems. Now I've just rebooted to find that I have no audio from internal speakers (the boot up chime works though). Earphones work perfectly.
There is a constant red light in the earphone jack. The volume icon in the top menu bar is greyed out. In the Sound preference panel, Built-in Speakers are not available as an option for audio out. The only option is Digital Audio. If I connect earphones, then they are available as the only option.
I have tried all the various methods that people have recommended, to switch off digital audio through the earphone jack: trying to flip the little switch with a toothpick, paper clip, etc., as well as cleaning around inside the jack with a bit of rubbing or cleaning alcohol; also tried inserting and removing the earphones plug several times, while pushing the volume buttons on the keyboard. Nothing works.
I did get something from inserting/removing the earphone plug, as I seemed to be able to adjust volume from the keyboard, but I never got sound out from the speakers; the volume window seemed to indicate increase/decrease volume as I pressed the keys, but after a few seconds the volume window greyed out again with the No Entry symbol.
Trying to flip the digital audio switch in the jack occasionally gets the red light to turn off for a couple seconds, but then it comes back on.
Is there any particular problem with this that can't be solved by the aforementioned methods, that many people have used to solve it in a simple manner? Could my problem be more serious? Is there anything I could do if I opened up the Macbook, e.g., somehow to manually turn off the digital audio switch?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Got it fixed with a small flathead screwdriver with a fairly wide blade. Opened iTunes, started playing songs, had red light in headphone jack, as per usual with this problem.
Put screwdriver in jack, with blade more or less vertical, started moving it around inside of jack in clockwise motion, pressing pretty firmly. Took just a couple of "swirls" around the inside of the jack and then audio finally turned on! Was a bit of a hassle, but finally worked.

P.S. re. advice not to use metal object. This was the only way I was finally able to solve the problem (i.e., using the small screwdriver). I didn't see where using a metal object would be a problem, seeing as the headphone plug itself is metal. Anyway, it worked.

In-ear headphones playing audio from one side only

My apple in-ear headphones only play audio from one side. I've tried replacing the cap and mesh; and also tested the headphones on different devices and still get the same problem. Any advice?

Probably time to have them replaced.
