No audio from Optical out!

I'm using an ATV2 with HDMI going to my TV and an Optical cable going to my Pioneer receiver. I am not able to get any audio signal through the Optical out of the ATV. Dolby digital is set to "on" in the ATV and my receiver is set to accept a digital signal. I have seen some other message boards discussing this as being a common problem that may be an apple related issue. I'm just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience and figured out a way to work around it.
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't say similar issues are reported commonly, but there are enough of them on a reasonably regular basis, to be considered more than a handful. The majority of such reports appear to be resolved by making settings adjustments, on either the Apple TV or the receiver.
I'm unlikely to be familiar with your receiver, but you might want to try with 'Dolby Digital' set to off.

JSB Xtreme Audio Notebook optical out problem with Home TheaterSystem-HELP!, I have this sound card connected?(optical OUT) ?to my home?theater system's digital IN ?through the recommended /8in. optical miniplug-to-optical SPDIF cable. Theater system is set correctly to Digital-In mode. I have no sound!
The cable is a Velocity Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug digital cable. I don't see any settings in the Creative Console Launcher. The notebook is a Dell XPS M730 (Vista 32).
I have a PS3, DirecTV, and the SB Xtreme Audio Notebook cable on a hub switch that connects to the system's?one Optical IN. The PS3 and DirecTV sound perfect!
The sound card works fine with standard PC speakers. I'm at a loss as?to what to try next. I set this whole system up myself, so I'm pretty good at working out the kinks, except this one!

OK. I just went to Control Panel - Sound - Playback - Digital Output Device (SB Xtreme Audio Notebook) - Properties - Advanced. I experimented with different sample rates and bit depths. Clicked the test button and lo and behold - sound from the HTS! I've tried iTunes, PowerDVD (configured to digital output) and YouTube - no sound! Am I missing something really obvious?
HA! Just backed out to Playback and selected Digital Output Device (SPDIF) and set as Default. Sound is emunating from HTS! Well, that mystery is solved! Who knew.
Thanks anyway! Any comments or advice will still be appreciated.

no audio from built-out speakers on my Macbook pro, but with external headphones or speakers it does work. I see a red light inside the audio line-out port when you disconnect devices. What can I do?

    The internal switch is stuck.
Insert the earphone jack several times.
Blow real hard into the audio output ort.
Take a toothpick and jiggle inside the audio output port.
If no success, visit the Apple store genius bar.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor - recording audio from optical digital in - sound drops

    Hi guys
I've had an audigy 2 zs video editor for a couple of months now and it's greatly improved my audio output from my computer.
But the other day I started trying to record vinyl onto my computer directly.
In the past I've always used my hifi cd recorder deck, then ripped the audio off the cd.
So I have my turntable connected to my amp, and I use my minidisc deck as a DAC, then record using an optical from my minidisc DAC, to the optical input on the front of the audigy.
So I fire up the creative smart recorder software and start messing with the levels.
I also use a free bit of software from
    http://www.darkwood.demon.co.uk/PC/meter.html
called meterV which gives me a larger and more prominent read out of the level.
I then fine tune the output level on my DAC.
I have the stereo line out sockets on my audigy connected to an input on my hifi amplifier for listening to digital music etc.
So I start the vinyl and the sound starts coming through my DAC into my soundcard, the level readings start going, and the sound comes out of my hifi speakers.
My amp's switched to the audigy input - not the turntable
The problem is... every 30 seconds or so, the sound cuts out for 2-3 seconds and then resumes.
But the sound doesn't drop off on the level meters, or on the actual recording (recording 44.khz, 6bit wav file).
Only on the stereo line out of the audigy.
I ran the following test to see if the sound also cut out on the optical and coax outputs...
Whilst recording from the optical input, I've also tried recording to a minidisc portable from the optical out at the same time.
And the sound cuts out the same as when listening to the stereo line outs.
So the sound cuts off on the line out, the optical out, and also the coax out.
But this only happens when recording from the optical input.
When recording from the stereo line in - the sound doesn't cut out on any output!!!
The input selected in creative smart recorder is SPDIF.
This problem happens when smart recorder isn't even running - if I'm just listening to the line outs the sound cuts out.
But if I'm just playing back an MP3 or any sound, and there's nothing coming into the inputs, then playback is fine!!
So it's not a connection issue!
It doesn't seem to be triggered by sound frequencies - it seems to happen every 30-40 seconds no matter what is being recorded (it does the same thing when playing a CD so it's not just when using a turntable)
I've tried restarting the computer several times.
All the connections are properly seated.
I've had task manager loaded whilst this is happening to check CPU usage, and nothing - it just continues in a fairly straight line as normal. No spikes in CPU usage (I would have thought it unlikely that the video editor would be affected by such things anyway being an external box).
There is nothing else connected to USB - other than an internal memory card reader attached to a motherboard USB header.
And a wireless adaptor also connected to the motherboard - but the problem still happens when the wireless adaptor is disabled.
There's also nothing else connected to the USB ports on the Video Editor box.
    Machine spec:
    Shuttle SN4G2-v3
    AMD Athlon XP 3000+
    GB memory
    80GB IDE HDD, 2 x external Lacie FireWire 250GB dri'ves
    LG dual layer dvd/rw/ram
    Win XP Pro SP2
I've not upgraded firmware or drivers - just used the installation from the CD.
What confuses me is why this only happens when recording from the optical input, and it affects all outputs but the recording and the level monitor show no trace of the temporary loss in sound!
So the audigy is receiving the sound, but it just drops off the outputs for some reason!
    Any ideas?
I hope the above explanation is clear.
    Thanks
    Ben

Sorry for not replying - have been away for the past few days.
Ok, so I go to Creative Device Control, and on the PCI/USB tab I've changed the sampling rate to 48khz.
    It was previously at 44.kHz
The bit depth is still at 6bit
Now the problem seems to be solved.
The problem was only with the output from the device. And now there are no skips!!
    Excellent!
Why has that solved it though?
I've read on other forums (head-fi) that the audigy cards do not run at 44.kHz nati'vely so the sound has to be downsampled.
Is that skipping an artefact of that downsampling process?
Will having that set at 48kHz, but recording to a 44.kHz 6bit wav file theoretically reduce the quality of the recording - compared to having it set at 44.kHz and recording a wav at 44.kHz?
On the SPDIF tab the input sample rate is shown as 44.kHz - as that's what is output by the DAC in my minidisc deck.
But when I changed the sampling rate on the PCI/USB tab, the SPDIF output sampling rate also changed to 48kHz.
This means if I wanted to record from the optical output, whilst also recording to the computer, and that device only supported 44.kHz - I can't do that?
You listed some main reasons to the truth, why Creative SB cards are not very popular on serious use (DAW). I.e. need for resampling. X-Fi's in creation mode are (least said to be) the only ones not resample everything.
There is a setting for "Bit-Accurate-Recording" (digital modes only) --> have you tried if that works on your recordings?

    <![endif] -->Hello,
I spent over 2 weeks going over those forums and goggling around the problem I have. ?
Ever since I upgraded from Vista x86 to Vista x64 I cannot get the sound out through my digital out (flexijack) connection. I am connecting to Onkyo SR800 ( I don't think Onkyo is causing the problem since it worked before)
    Here is what I tried:
. I verified the optical cable and mini-toslink adapter work.
2 I tried latest drivers from Creative site.
    3. I tried older drivers ( SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_5_0004,? SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_5_0002 ?SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_5_0006)
    4. I tried changing spdif out to default audio device in vista.
    5. I tried changing sampling rate from 48 to 96 Hz in audio console.
    6. I readjusted all volume controls in both vista and creative to the maximum.
7 I tried sending test sounds to spdif out.
    8. Tried Daniel_K's support packs.
    9. Some of the older drivers used to have other tab with Digital I/O checkbox, but that did not help also.
    To add some background information:
My onboard audio is disabled and I have no problems outputting sound to my 2 speakers connected to line on the XFI Xtremegamer. In vista x86? I was able to output simultaneously to both my 2 crappy speakers and to my Onkyo receiver (7.). I saw that some people were able to get stereo output through optical out, but I can get a **bleep** squeak out of my onkyo from XFI.
I don't usually post on the boards, because I am able to come across a solution, but this is the first time in my life that I could find a solution. If it wasn't for the price I paid for XFI, I would probably ditched it already and went with onboard Realtek. The problem is that I know XFI sounds better, besides I already spent the money so it's not very useful outside of my computer.

<![endif] -->Jmacguire,? thanks for your advice.
It's a very interesting post, I think it should even become a sticky here as it very nicely describes how Vista passes audio to applications.
Unfortunately, that doesn't fix my problem. I tried setting my speakers to 5., and 7.. I also tried setting spdif as a default audio device, but then I get no sound? at all. ?
I went as far as configuring ffdshow filter to enable spdif pass trough. Since I don't even hear a test sound from windows in my receiver, I think that there is some option somewhere that pretty much disables any output to my flexijack.
Also a funny observation,? when I downloaded an iso image of creative officuial drivers ( from April last year I believe)? I had extra options for digital input/output in speakers tab in control panel and in creative audio console.
It seems weird that creative removed those options from newer drivers.
However, checking the checkbox by enable digital I/O did nothing for my problem.
I begin to wonder what would be the most cost effecti've solution to connect my pc to my receiver. I want to use both my computer speakers and my Onkyo receiver, and by using audio jack splitters I will loose stereo signal (if I am correct) and that's a path I do not want to take, but if flexijack will not work in vista 64, I do not have a choice.

  • No audio from line out

    hi,
my audio works with internal speaker but nothing from line out when selected in sound controls. In audio midi setup, i do not appear to have any control on the master volume for line out, (its stuck at 0) i am suspecting a driver problem - May have been overwritten or deleterd when I tried to install Parallels 7 - now uninstalled

What do you have connected to line out?
Line out is designed to be the input to amplifiers and not speakers.

  • Kona 3 running on Win7 (PP CS6.02) sometimes audio from analog out of breakout box, sometimes not

I am using a Kona 3 with break out box running the most recent drivers.  It is on an HP Z820 PC running Win 7 SP1. I take the 2 analog audio outs of the BO box and feed it to a speaker preamp. I have used this approach over the years with FCP and now PP. It recently (CS6.0) has become unreliable.  The meters in PP indicate a signal. I can take the PC audio out and feed it to the preamp and the audio is great. Sometimes if I reboot the system the audio from the Kona 3 BO box returns, sometimes it doesnt.
I will be calling AJA to pursue this problem.

I contacted AJA about this issue and this was their response...
At this time, we don't have AJA Adobe plug-ins for PP CS6.0.2 version. My understanding is that if you click into the PP source window and back to the timeline may fix the audio issue as a workaround.  We are expecting the release of the AJA plug-ins very soon.

  • Live! 24bit External - no audio from optical

I have a Li've! 24-bit External card. I have 2ch analogue speakers plugged in the analogue port and they work fine.
I also have an optical cable from the SPDIF Optical Out port on the Li've! going to a Sony AV digital receiver that has a surround system connected. But I'm not getting anything at all at the receiver.
I've tested all the optical cable and the receiver by connecting a DVD player at the Li've! end and it plays fine through the cable-receiver-speakers.
But nothing comes out when I plug the optical cable into the Li've!. I have had this working in past, about 2months ago, but just tried today again an nothing, zip, nada.
I've downloaded and updated the latest drivers update. The Li've! box came new less than 6mnths ago with this new computer system.
I work in the IT field but this has me stumped. I'm starting to think something cactus has gone wrong with the SPDIF side of the Li've! box.
    Help.

Did you happen to change the sampling rate to 96khz(maybe something that the receiver cannot handle). Try changing the sampling rate around to 48khz.

  • Pass audio from optical IN to analog out

Hi Guys, I'm new here, I'm barely get my SB Zx and I'm wondering if I can do this:
If is to much problem or is not posible, I'm only need to find a 10ft toslink cable, jeje, is not big deal, but if I can do it on the way of the drawing, is going to be a cleaner installation, Thank you!

    CarnageHimura,
If you intend to have the compressed bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) audio pass through to the sound card (Sound Blaster Zx) for decoding, and then output the decoded audio content to your connected speakers system (I believe this is the Logitech Z906) via analog connection, then the answer is 'No'.
Other than the audio source itself (the content playing on your XBox 360), wouldn't it be easier to connect directly from your XBox 360 to your speakers instead?

  • No audio from Optical Input

Hi there. I've recently bought a new TV which I use as my monitor but I also want to play the TV sound through my Mac (when i'm watching a tv programme, i want it to play through my mac). I've plugged the Optical cable into the line in and nothing is happening. I've checked all the settings and they all seem ok. I'm confused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Sam.

    dear sam...
I think you're a little confused. Optical input would mean a dvd player/cd player
giving you an optical signal out. I haven't heard of any tv's that would do that, but I might be wrong. best bet would be to use a twin rca--> 3.5 mm jack cable
as the audio coming from your tv probably is analog
    Hope this helps

I have a Pavilion p6250f PC with a ATI Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics card.  I have it connected to my Onyo receiver through the DVI-D port to the HDMI port on my Onyo receiver.   I get a message saying I need to cable the sound separately, so I am using a optical cable from the PC to the receiver, but am unable to get any sound.
I have used the Realtek menu to select Digital Out.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Where are you connecting your optical cable to on the PC as you have stated?
Try SPDIF output from the PC using a coaxial cable to a digital input on the receiver. Or, use an analog cable from the back of the PC to the receiver.  Then go back into the Control Panel ---Sound---> Playback Tab and set the default sound out device.

  • No audio from line out port

hello, i am using plug-powered speakers on my powermac g5 using the front headphone port. the speakers work fine this way, but when i use them on the line out port in the back, i get a high pitched hissing sound and very quiet audio. the computer detects the speakers, and i am sure i'm using the output port ] ))) and not the input port >o<. how can i get the speakers to work from the line out port so i don;t have to use the front headphones port? thanks!

i have a question. if i have standard apple ipod headphones, and use them on the rear audio out port, will i get the same sound as the headphones port on the front?
i still can't get this to work. i'm starting to believe this is a hardware problem, all the settings are identical for audio out and headphones in audio MIDI setup, but i'm still not getting any sound when i use the rear.

  • Sound blaster Z with no sound from Optical S/PDIF output

    Hi,
I'm trying to record music from a Denon DTR-2000 Digital Audio Tape deck. I have connected a optical S/PDIF cable from Optical Out on the DAT player to the Optical In on the sound card but I'm not hearing any sound.
I've also tried with a CD/DVD player using optical out and still no sound.
My only concern is that whilst there is a definite click when the TOSLINK cable is plugged into the CD/DVD player it doesn't seen particularly well connected in the sound card.
If I start Smart Recorder with Source as Digital-In (SoundBlaster Z) and press Analyse there is no movement in the sound level bars. Presumably there should be.
Hope you can offer some help please.

Just to clear this up. The original cable was fine but the quality of the connectors left a lot to be desired. The plugs needed to be pushed in quite forcibly.

  • Toshiba 32 XV505 optical out and sound bar

Hi guys, wonder if you can help.
I have a toshiba XV505 TV and I've just bought a Cambridge Audio TV minx sound bar, it works fine with a headphone cable from the TV but for best quality sound I wanted to use an optical out cable. But when plugging in the optical cable I get nothing, I've tried the optical cable with the DVD player and it works fine so the cable is good. Is this some type of restriction with the TV that it can't output the sound?
I can't find a setting in the menu where I'd need to enable it. Can anybody help?

The optical out option is not displayed.
nothing to do with Midi Setup, the issue is Hardware level, when hdmi is plugged there is no way to get out signal from optical out. (no red light). Even with hdmi to dvi converter.
I just bought a none official MDP to DVI adapter, hoping it works.... just paid about 8$. But I think it's a shame to make users find own solutions and spend even more money, after spendig 1000€ in a Mac mini.......
That's not the way to do things, they made a big mistake with that, no way to get optical sound, im going to try this last trick, but even if it works im totally disappointed with apple. After more than two months Late 2012 mini come out, and no solution for this.... just an update we need!!
