No audio from the mini port to hdmi

I was under the idea that if I wanted to convert my
Mini port to hdmi I would get audio as well. Am I missing something?

If your MBP was made before April 2010, there is no audio output from the Mini-Displayport, and you'll need to run a separate audio cable from your headphone port to the TV.

  • Redirecting audio from the mini box to the TB display

I just installed the TB display update (12 Dec 2011).  On completion I'm prompted to select a connectivity.  Not understanding the ramifications, I select connection to the mini.  I now get the audio from the mini and not the TB display.  A big comedown.
The question is how to redirect the audio to the TB displays speakers rather than the mini and its tiny speakers.

    To set up sound input:
1 Choose Apple () > System Preferences, and then click Sound.
2 Click the Input tab in Sound preferences.
3 Choose Display Audio to input sound through your display’s microphone.
    To set up sound output:
1 Choose Apple () > System Preferences, and then click Sound.
2 Click the Output tab in Sound preferences.
3 Choose Display Audio to hear sound through your display’s speaker system.
These sound settings are used whenever your display is connected to your computer. They remain in effect until you change them.

  • Audio from the mini to speakers

I use an HP monitor with built-in speakers.  The VGA/mini-display port supports the video just great.  The audio uses a 3.5mm connector into the audio out port on my brand new mini.  It worked fine on my old mini but the new one is silent.  THe speakers buzz when I plug in the cable but that is it.

Are you sure that you are plugging the plug into the headphone port and not the mic/line-in port?
If you go to System Preferences>Sounds>Output is the headphone output selected?

  • My MacBookPro 10.7.5 had been streaming tv thru the mini port/HDMI cable. Suddenly it stopped working. My tv screen is now black. I have tried restarting the computer with the cord connected. The computer is otherwise working.

I had been streaming tv with my MacBookPro 10.7.5 for several years using a cord from the mini port to the HDMI plug on the TV. Suddenly it stopped working. My computer otherwise works fine but there is my computer screen image is no longer being transmitted to the tv. The tv is black. I have it on the correct input.
I tried restarting the computer with the cord attached. Thanks in advance.

Test the cord on another external display or test with another cord.
    Ciao.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.

  • Can i use the HDMI port and the Mini displayport to HDMI adapter simultaneously to switch between two displays?

I just bought a new Mac Mini and was hoping that i can connect my TV via the HDMI port and also connect a 19" monitor via the Minidispaly port to HDMI adapter or the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. This way i can pick between having the screen mirrored to my tv, or having the screen displayed at my desk.
    Is this possible?

Yes. Note the resolution via HDM is limited to
This model simultaneously supports 1920x1200 on an HDMI or a DVI display (using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter) and2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with an optional Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, which is compatible with the Thunderbolt port).

it only shows a wall paper
Then it is working! This is how it works:
Your built-in screen and you external screen are each show at sizes proportional to their pixel count. If this is not the correct arrangement, then drag the screens so that they correspond with their placement on your bench.
Then move the mouse off the edge of one screen, and it appears on the other. Next drag a window across to the other screen.

  • Audio from MacBook to TV with HDMI not working?

I recently purchased a HDMI cord for my MacBook, but I don't seem to get any audio from my TV when it's hooked up. I've had no problems getting the image to display on my TV, but the sound won't work. I've already gone through System Preferences to see if there was even an option for output and the only one I saw was for my internal speakers. I had previously just hooked up my computer to a set of external speakers by by TV with an auxiliary cable, but I no longer have the speakers and need to find a different option.
Many thanks in advance for your help!

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio. If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug.
The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

  • Audio from iPad whilst connected with HDMI cable?

I'm planning to connect my iPad (3rd Gen) to a computer monitor without speakers using an HDMI cable... I assume I can still take the audio out from the iPad to connect to some external speakers?

  • Mini port to HDMI not working

Trying to connect iMac to my TV with mini port to hdmi genuine adaptor with no success. Works ok if I connect iMac to works Microsoft laptop, it displays immediately. Then connect Microsoft laptop to TV , absolutely fine.
I have looked on Internet & apparently in Display on iMac , arrangements should appear but doesn't on mine.
    Any suggestions welcome please.

Hi, thank you for your response.
I think it was my terminology.
What I bought today from PC World was a IMDHDD13 Mini Display Port adaptor which they advised would work!
It plugs into the thunderbolt port on Mac, screen turns blue for a couple of seconds then returns to normal.
In DISPLAY, arrangements doesn't appear & if I search it, it tells me it is hidden because there is no other screen connected.
I'm thinking now after reading your post this is not a genuine apple part PC World have sold me!

  • MINI PORT TO HDMI HOOKING UP MAC TO TV

When I connected my mac to my TV using a mini port to hdmi cable I did not see my computer screen view on the TV but instead I saw apples default screen saver (the galaxy shot).  I can move pages off my computer to the right and it slides it into the TV shot as if my screen extends out to the right where I can only see it on the TV.  How do I change it to view on the TV exactly what I see on the computer?

Well through lots of trial and error I finally figured it out.  System Preferences > Displays > Arraingement > check the box that says "mirror displays"  I only hope this helps someone else from a long fustrating night.

This is perfectly normal. You can run an optical digital out this way. You need a mini-toslink adapter like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-TOSLINK
Then you can set the digital out as default (instead of Speakers) to run audio to a surround sound reciever via optical fiber.

Doesn't show mirroring any more. Was working while watching a movie but when I pulled it out from the computer and put it back in the system would no longer mirrorr the screen on the TV.

  • My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter.

My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter. I also tried the HDMI to DVI adapter ane the Mac-Mini with same result. The monitor does work on my older Macbook Pro that has the DVI connector. Is it a Software/Driver issue ?

Should be extremely simple, please carefully read Connect multiple displays to your Mac. If you still have problems then it's probably a cable issue that would be resolved by replacing the adapter cable. You should be using this adapter. If you are using a third party adapter that might be your problem!
