.mpg saved as .mov - a required codec isn't available BUG
I opened very short 640x480 100MB .mpg shot on a point & shoot camera in Quicktime Player Pro 7.6.6 and went into Window> Movie Properties> Visual Settings> ROTATE and Saved as .mov
THE PROBLEM IS it does not play the Saved .mov (required codec is not available error) in Quicktime Player 10.2 (running 10.8.5 on 2011 Macbook Pro).
10.8.5 does play the Saved .mov if I click on the icon and hit Space Bar.
A 2008 Mac Pro running 10.6.8 and Quicktime 10.0 does play the Saved .mov
I am doing the rotate in Quicktime 7.6.6 because I know how to do the rotation easily (and went blind trying to figure out how to rotate my movie in QT 10.2).
MY QUESTION IS what am I missing -- or better how do I rotate a movie in Quicktime 10.2 might get me back to work...okay, I tried searching ROTATE in QT 10.2 help and this time I found this:
Open the movie in QuickTime Player.
Choose View > Show Clips, and then select the clip.
When a clip is selected it’s outlined in yellow.
Do one of the following:
Use a gesture on the Multi-Touch trackpad:
Rotate a clip by rotating two fingers in a circle clockwise or counterclockwise. Flip the clip by swiping slowly with four fingers either left to right or bottom to top.
Use the menu commands:
From the Edit menu, choose whether you want to rotate the clip left or right, or flip the clip horizontally or vertically.
I will post back if it still doesn't play... -
When i import from my camera and try to view the image i get the following message --(QuickTime Player can't open "IMAG0002.AVI" because a required codec isn't available.) Any information would help.

I have a slew of .MOD files I cannot play from our Canon video cam. I tried renaming the files as MPEG or MOV, I get the message "The document “001.MPEG” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." Any advice on getting these to play? Thanks!
Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

I recently upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and cannot open up .avi files now in Quicktime. These same files opened up with no problem prior to my upgrade. Additionally, I had upgraded to the Pro version of Quicktime recently, but it appears I've retrograded back to the basic version, unexplainably.
I get this error message: The document “ANDREW_McD_MEDIA_VERSION.avi” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.Hi,
I had exactly the same problem & found the answer here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3219982?start=0&tstart=0 . Download a program called Perian, very easy to download worked a treat. I wish all fixes were this easy - Debbie -

I cannot get the AVI files to play on my iMac. They were copied over from the PC and I can see them but when trying to open them I get the message "The document “Mural.avi” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." As far as I know I have the most recent version og Qucktime.
Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

I go the error message...The document “20130326_MNTvsMexico.mov” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
Can anyone help? There are a lot of third party codecs for QT http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
Most of them are "payware" with no guarantee they'll actually do what they claim. I spent hundreds back in the days before QT10 and eventuallty found that EVERYTHING those purchased codecs do... can be done for FREE with VLC media player. -
The document “EK000011.AVI” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available. Can anyone tell in very simple terms what I need to do? I am trying to open video files to a mac and the aformentioned message comes up
Download and install the free VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
It runs a multitude of file formats. -
Hello,
This is the error message I get when I try to watcha burnt dvd, can anyone tell me what I need to do?
thank you
QuickTime Player can't open "solea-antonio-walter.mov" because a required codec isn't available.Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
PERIAN (quicktime extension)
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
QUICKTIME 7.6.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
VLC Media Player
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
NICEPLAYER
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted. -
Quick time Player can't open because a required codec isn't available. The DVD I am trying to play was made on an IPAD. My Imac came with a IMac Application install DVD, A IMac Mac OS X Install DVD, & iWork, I don't think I have iLife What additional software do I need?
Perian 1.2.3 *should* work for both QuickTime & and QTX in Mountain Lion. Regardless of the filetype container, whether it is a Matroska (.mkv) or a .mov. As to the actual encoding of the file (h264, .mp2, whatever..) I have found most play, even older formats.
Even though it's no longer supported and is a dead project, it works just fine. It will load as a System Preference file and adds to the Other category in them.
I think in 10.8 you've still got support for QTX so it may work with that. (in Mavericks, it only works for QT7)
If not, just run QuickTime 7.6.6.

If no luck there, you could also try VLC at http://www.videolan.org -
The document "mpg" could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
I have loaded some home movies from my video camera and when I try to view these I receive the error message The document “filename:MPG” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
I cannot seem to do anything with these files. I can view them on another PC. I have tried to add them to iTunes with no luck, and tried to install an add on for quicktime however it does not download.
Any suggestions?Have you tried VideoLAN? It can often play videos that won't play with Quicktime.

please helpi plugged in a usb stick and it had lots of videos on it and it won't let me open them and watch them, it says 'a required codec isn't available'
This message indicates the videos were encoded using codecs for which the current "playback platform" is not currently configured. Either use a third-party media player having the required codecs built into the player or install the required codecs on your system if available.
