No audio in events library

When previewing clips using the events library, some clips do not playback their audio. I have audio skimming turned on however about half of my clips in my event do not play audio. If I drag to the timeline they playback fine. There is absolutly no dfference in media between the clips that playback/skim audio and those that do not.
One thing that I have noticed however is that the problem clips (those not skiming audio in the events library) have an "(id)" appended to the end of their file names in the "Orginal Media" folder within the "Final Cut Events" folder. The clips that skim audio have their original file name. Are these two things related? Does anyone know what is happening here?
Thanks.

Thank you Tom for your reply. Your suggestion to look at the QT inspector prompted me to check the inspector within FCPX as well to try to spot a difference between those clips that were skimming and those that were not.
For some reason the problem clips have a Channel Configuration set to Custom. FCPX apperantly tries to auto-detech the channel config and it seems to have gotten it wrong. Setting the Channel Configuration for these clips to Four Mono has solved the issue (my clips have four channels of mono audio). Thanks for the help.

  • I give up: Missing Audio in Events Library, NO skimming, no sound

The subject line tells it all. When I 'upgraded' to iLife 11, the audio function in playback from the Events Library has ceased. When I move a clip to the Project section, the audio is there. I can "see" the audio when I select to see the waveform of the Event clip. But nothing makes the sound come on. I have reinstalled, etc. Nada.
    Any tips?
Am I stupid, or is this another glitch in the skin of this otherwise pretty shiny fruit???
    Thanks

I am also having problems importing video and audio. The video comes in but the audio is gone. I am using a Zoom camera and with iLife 09 there was no problem. On solution I have found is to open the video in Quicktime and then save it there. After saving in Quicktime I import the movie and the sound shows up. However the syncing between video and audio is slightly off.
It does not seem to play audio in the event window. Even when the audio squiggly is selected to the on position. In the editor window I have had to turn up the audio to hear anything.
Unless Apple resolves the issue I am going back to 09 until the bugs are worked out. What a shame. I like some of the new enhancements but not enough to have to jump through hoops to get the sound to work.

  • No audio for clips in my event library since upgrading to iLife '09

After upgrading to iLife '09, I noticed something odd in the new iMovie. All of my clips (recorded with a Sanyo Xacti HD1A and imported into the previous version of iPhoto DO show up in the event library, but DO NOT play any sound in the event library. If I copy a clip or move it up to the project editor the audio plays there. Does anyone know why I am getting no audio for these clips in the event library or what can be done to correct the issue?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Finally got some sound on the clips in my iMovie '09 event library. This is what worked here: I went into the Pictures folder and showed the package contents of the "iPhoto Library". I went into the "Data" folder. I went to a "2008" folder. I located the folder of the first video clip I had for the holiday footage... "Dec 14, 2008". Inside that was a QuickTime file "SANY0001" and a JPEG "SANY0001.jpg". I zipped up the "Dec 14, 2008" folder. I dragged the folder to the trash. I dragged the .zip file out to the desktop.
I opened iPhoto '09. It showed an event for Dec 14, 2008 with a dashed-line round rectangle where it would have normally shown the first frame of the video clip. I closed iPhoto '09 and opened iMovie '09. It alerted me that it needed to generate a thumbnail for some video, and after about a minute the clip was in my event library and playing audio. Not only that... ALL clips in my event library now are playing audio. I quit iMovie '09 and went back into the "iPhoto Library". A new "Dec 14, 2008" folder was there with a new "SANY0001" QuickTime file (I wonder where it got this file from... hidden cache or backup somewhere?). I expanded the .zip on the desktop and dragged the original JPEG file from it to the new "Dec 14, 2008" folder.
I opened iPhoto '09 again. Now the thumbnail (obviously the JPEG file) displays fine.
Double checked iMovie '09... Yep, still playing the audio in ALL the clips in the event library.
I'm not really sure why this worked the way it did. The time it took to generate the new thumbnail was ONLY for the one clip... so it seems rather odd that all the subsequent clips in the event library started to work. Perhaps I just got lucky and it is only that first clip that was throwing everything else off in the thumbnails... or maybe iMovie just looks at the first clip in the event library to determine if it is playing sound or not for all of them?
Another oddity? The original SANY0001 file is "17.2 MB". The new one, which appears to be exactly the same in quality, is "10.8 MB". The "More Info" section reveals a bit more that might be of interest. The original is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Big Endian). The new one is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Little Endian). Total bit rate in the original is 2,570. In the new one it is 1,605.
Ah well. It works!!! Now I can finally have some fun exploring the new features of iMovie '09

  • Audio skimming in event library doesn't work

Audio skimming works perfectly in my project library, and I can turn it on and off with the appropriate button.
But audio skimming in my event library does not work at all!
I've tried skimming slower, restarting iMovie and restarting my Mac one at the time and nothing works.
I'm getting desperate, I have no idea why this won't work, everything is new and it's the first time I've really tried to use iMovie.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

  • No audio while scrubbing video in event library in iMovie 10

I just began making my first film with the new iMovie 10 and I have no audio while scrubbing the video event library screen. The audio plays fine when I just have it play in the event library but it vanishes when I scrub which makes it difficult to find start and stop points for the section I wish to use. The old version allowed audio while scrubbing. Does this new version not allow it? I downloaded the latest update this evening (11-21-13) but that didn't fix it. I've searched the tool bar for an audio control but have yet to find it. I've shut down and restarted the computer to no avail.

Go to the View menu. At the bottom you should see "Audio Skimming." Choose that, and you should start hearing audio as you scrub/skim video.

  • IMovie 11 projects no longer working, preview window is glitched or black, event library not playing imported vids

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11.  I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work.  iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc  (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later).  I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library.  Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them.  My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode.  I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way).  I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library).  This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
    users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.  I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects).  I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable.  I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not.  This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
    I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card.  iMovie ver 9.0.4.  Lion 10.7.2

Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
    Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything.

  • Help with event in iMovie '09 event library?

I am going nuts with an iMovie project!
I am trying to make a movie of my recent vacation (which I do every year). I have already invested about 15 hours in the project. I opened iMovie tonight and tried to view it. Immediately, I noticed something was odd because as my cursor ran across clips in my project they did not show in the viewer and where ever the cursor was over a clip (either in the project or on a clip in the event I was working from) the thumbnail image in the filmstrip switched to light gray.
When I play my project all the music and titles I added play but the clips are blacked out AND the clip's audio doesn't play. The source clips in the event library also play the same in the viewer (blackout and with no audio). The problem seems to relate only to the event I am working with to create my project. I checked some other events in my library and they play fine in the viewer (although I am not using any video from those events in my current project).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just for the record I am running OS 10.5.8 on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I am using iMovie '09 v. 8.0.6. Also, the clips were imported directly into iMovie.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I wound up resolving this on my own. I finally went to Time Machine and restored the folder "movies" under my account name. I went back about an hour before I stopped working on the project. This restored the project and allowed me to continue to work on it. I only lost about 3 minutes at the very end that I had to recreate (much better than recreating the entire project over). It has been about a week since the restore and (knock wood!) all has been well. I have learned the value of a Time Machine back-up.
One thing of note: Immediately after the restore I did have an issue with iMovie not recognizing my iTunes library. Once I opened iTunes and went back to iMovie the library was there.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • Reorganizing Events in my Events Library

I am studying the iMovie '11 Help to figure out *how to re-organize my Events Library*. One lesson is How to move a clip from one Event to another. It says:
+To move video clips from one Event to another:+
+In the Event Library, click to select the Event with the video you want to move.+
+In the Event browser, select the clip or clips you want to move.+
+Drag the clips to the name of the other Event in the Event Library to which you want to move them.+
+Release the mouse button when you see the name of the Event highlighted.+
    +Click OK.+
_My question is_, *Can I create a brand new folder in the Events Library and move clips from various other events into that new folder?* I ask because the Help explanation explains that we can move clips from one folder to another (existing) folder but it does not mention the possibility of creating a totally brand new folder.
Example: In five folders/Events, I have footage of various themes: (1) My dog watching ucks in the pool, (2) Inside the house new furniture, (3) My dog inside the house, (4) Baby birds in a nest growing up and leaving the nest. (5) Children laughing in bed.
There are five Events with a jumble of all of those themes. In this case, I will end up with five folders and five themes, so I will have to only rename the folders, BUT *what about the cases where I need more folders? Is it ok to create a new folder for those clips taken from other Events?*
I ask because I have been told over and over that iMovie is a very sensitive program that doesn't want us to be fiddling with the contents, or that we have to fiddle with them only while working in iMovie. I want to make sure that what I described is a legitimate kind of fiddling around, and not one which will lose me footage and audio as happened to me about ten years ago (after which I quit iMovie for a long time.)

    Hi Lorna,
for quite a while, I'm watching with admiration and a good portion of amusement (no offense meant!) your tenacity to win the struggle with movie-making in general and iM in special ...
in this case, we have to get less 'practical' advice, but more 'concept thinking':
in real-life, people like to store things in drawers - there's a drawer for socks, another for shirts. What if you need red socks for a red shirt? you have to search manually in both drawers.
now, computers: since iTunes, Apple tries to teach people to use tags: there's a big basket with socks AND shirts, but each has tags, (sock, red, wool, old, holes ... ). A computer is much faster than you to organize this mess: one click 'red' and you instantly get any red socks and red shirts!
    back to movie making:
what you want is drawers (=folders), you can manually organize. The Big Brother of iMovie, FinalCut call them bins.
but you'll find in iM a knob with a key on it - KEYWORDS (tags)! it allows to tag each clip, or part of, with as much keywords you like ... hmm, you need.
the better you apply keywords to clips (and iM allows to use your very own keywords, adding 'dogs', 'birds', 'socks ...), the better - and faster - you'll find material for your Projects!
it is very different to real-life, and we do this discussion with ANY 'switcher', who doesn't trust that concept when importing their 45GBs/thousand 'drawers' music Libraries ... or, same in iPhoto.
face recognition is such a thing ... = I have to organize thousands of pics from my son's soccer team - the computer identifies in seconds each member of the team; a click later, I get all stills showing Player #2.... that is MUCH easier than manually searching in dozens of folders (2009? 2010? April? December? The Big Match? Training? ... )
... spend some time off the computer with a pencil and some sheets of paper. what are YOUR keywords? what are the properties, you're most searching of? make a list of your keywords. consider future usage too. and, you can add additional keywords later. keep it simple & short - after finding all 'birds' clips, you can search for the robin manually ...
    summary:
Events are meant for a 'time' structure, not content.
    Use Keywords.
    have fun ...

  • My event library will not show any video clips

When I highlight any event in my event library the message comes up 'no video clips match the current selection'.
I have tried changing to all clips and favourites or unmarked.

    Hi
As I see this I mostly suspect one of three reasons
    • iMovie Event's and or iMovie Project's folders have/has been moved/altered on DeskTop/Finder - DON'T - but try to move everything back exactly where it was
    • iMovie pref. file got corrupted (very easily done by e.g. Panic/Force halt's) - trash it when iMovie is NOT running
    • Material used in Movie Project is located on device not accessibly any longer. E.g. one used audio from Audio-CD then ejected the CD. iMovie (Project's) Don't do ANY copy of the used material - only point's to where it found it and if external hard disks, Audio-CDs etc are disconnected then the iMovie Project get's lost and it has no function to try to find it (at all).

  • How to copy/export a video clip from event library to external hard drive?

Can you help? Can you export a video clip from the iMovie Event library to a hard drive

You can "daisy chain" FireWire devices. Plug your IF into the Mbook, and plug your external disk into the IF (it has two ports...), or do it the other way around, whatever seems to work best.
The whole chain will be as fast as your slowest device, and I think the FPod is FW 400, so the disk will also operate at that speed. Many people work like this on their laptops, and it works fine. Better than USB.
Don't use USB for it. USB needs CPU and is in general less efficient in handling audio. Daisychaining FW-devices is the way to go.
    regards, Erik.

  • Event Library Title with yellow warning sign?

I just noticed that in my Event Library, I have and event with the yellow triangle ! sign (bottom right)
In the associated Project files, there are 3 projects with grayed out warning signs and what looks like sound icons.
I can't figure out what they might be referring to. The files play. Curious. Does anyone know
    Event Files
    Associated Project files

The grayed out icon you see in the project files indicates that you have shared the project. If you click on it and go to the inspector it will give you the specifics of the share. The yellow triangle probably means FCPX belirves there is a problem with the audio on some clips. Did you have FCPX analyze your audio on import? I as a rule do not and have not seen this icon in the brouser. I do have some clips when put into the timeline show that same icon in the inspector. I suggest you select one of the clips that display this alert icon and go to the inspector audio tab. I expect you will see what FCPX thinks is the problem.
Hope this at least gets you started on finding out what's going on.

  • Lifting compound clips into Event Library?

I'm wondering if there is a way to save compound clips into your event library?  I have been syncing audio and video manually in the timeline-long interviews- and I'd like to lift these long, now compounded clips back into the event library so that I have more room to play.  Thanks!!!  Any ideas?  I'm I missing something?  Work Arounds?

The best way to work with Compound Clips is to select the clips you want to use from the Event Browser then make those into a Compund Clip  - and THEN open that clip in the Timeline. That way the CC lives in your Event Browser and you can use it in any Project.
I've not tried this workaround but it just came to me - try Creating a compound Clip in the Event Browser (use any clip for this) then with the CC that you want in the Event Browser open in your Timeline, select and copy its contents.
Next, open the new CC in the Timeline and delete the clip (or clips) from it, and paste the stuff you want to save into it. As I said, it's just a hunch but it may work - please let me know what happens.

  • Cannot see video in Event library preview browser"

I am trying to preview video clips in my event library browser.  When I click on the clips to preview/play, I hear the audio, but do not see any video.  I can however still drag them to a project  where I can see and hear them video like "normal".  I was able to do this yesterday, but cannot do this today...I am thinking one of my kids was in iMovie and changed a setting or something....please help!

  • Import an MP4 movie into my event library...

I'm trying to import an MP4 movie into my event library...all I get is the audio with black thumbnails. What am I doing wrong?

    Sorry I couldn't help.
Here is one idea. Get MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. It is free.
Open MPEG Streamclip. Drag your MP4 file into MPEG Streamclip.
    Use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME...
    For Compression, choose h.264.
    Leave everything else the same.
Then try to import the resulting file into iMovie, same as before.
If it still does not work, try it again and this time choose Apple Internediate Codec for compression.
This should produce an MOV file with h.264 inside (or AIC inside).

  • Volume stops playing sometimes when skimming event library

While skimming clips in the event library, occasionally the volume will stop working, i.e., there's no sound, making it very difficult to properly select and edit clips for the project pane. The only way I've been able to fix this is to quit, and restart, iMovie.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi
Sounds like a corrupted iMovie pref file.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
