No Audio in Safari after DVD-Playback via "optical out"
Hi,
i'm using an optical cable to connect my Mac Mini to a hifi receiver. Audio works great in Safari & Firefox and so on, even digital out (dts, Dolby Digital) is working with Mac DVD-player.
But after DVD-playback the audio doesn't work anymore in Safari & Firefox. I have to completely quit Safari or Firefox and reopen to get audio back (e.g. Youtube or Apple Quicktime Videos).
How can i fix this?

I have the same problem.
Apparently, the "Digital Out" channel cannot be shared by multiple running applications, the first one starting takes it and keeps it. You have to stop it to allow an other (single) application to use it instead.
To me it is a bug : the front most application should take the Digital Out channel, and release it when an other one becomes front most, but this bug has apparently being going on for a long time, and Apple does not seem interested in its correction.

Previewing dts via optical out
I'm using DTS streams in DVD studio pro 4 (.cpt files). Although the manual says it can be previewed through the optical out on a G5 with an external DTS encoder, the DTS-stream can't be previewed, it simply doesn't work. (ac3 files are previewed ok in this way). (and by the way, after building a project the apple dvd-player does play the DTS through the same optical out.)
so how can I preview DTS in dvd-studio pro 4 with the optical out on a G5?
GeertTo listen to more than the default 2 channel output of a G5 you will need a PCI soundcard such as the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 (or some other more expensive PCI card or Firwire option) which provides 6 discrete analogue outputs from FCP and other mutlitrack sound editing applications (not, at the moment, from Soundtrack Pro).
The optical output only passes encoded streams of DTS and Dolby Digital as well as two channel audio.
DVD player and DVD Studio Pro 4.0 can pass encoded streams to the optical output. -
Gx630 and problem with dvd playback via hdmi to plasma
I'm having problems playing a dvd from the gx630 while connected via HDMI to my plasma. Without fail, the screen freezes up within 5 minutes of watching the movie. I can watch a dvd on my laptop without a problem. Any suggestions?
For what it's worth, I experienced the same thing recently with my GX630 while connected to a 42-inch Sharp Aquos. I tried a couple of different discs, but all of them froze just as you described and I had to reboot. I read somewhere that you have to "turn off" the laptop screen when doing this because of dvd copying restrictions, but I haven't looked into it any further.

'12 Mini to Older Receiver via Optical - Can't get 5.1 Surround
Yet another "Can't get surround sound via Toslink" question...
System:
2012 Mac Mini
Video to Sharp HDTV via HDMI
Audio to Pioneer VX-D608 Receiver via Optical
I have the cables connected properly. Video is flawless. Audio is being transmitted to the receiver, which "sees" an AC-3 or DTS signal and automatically switches into those modes according to the format encoded with the files. But for some reason, I am only getting sound out of the front speakers.
I have tested the receiver and all (5.1) speakers are functional.
It is as if I am only sending the front right and front left signals via AC-3 or DTS.
I have spent about 40 hrs playing with various audio software arrangements, including Plex, VLC, Perian (AC-3/DTS passthrough), Soundflower and Soundflowerbed routing.
Currently, in Audio MIDI Setup I am using the "Built-In Output", set to Encoded Digital Audio. The Format appears to switch depending on the file I am playing. The speakers can only be configured to Stereo, none of the surround options present themselves, which I understand is OK because the AC-3 or DTS is passed to the receiver via an encoded stereo signal.
My VLC player is playing an AC-3 or DTS track, and the output is set to the Built-In Output (Encoded).
As I mentioned, the receiver "sees" DTS or AC-3, but the sound won't come out all 5.1 speakers even though I know they are functioning.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!!If the receiver is seeing an AC-3 or DTS signal, it indicates
that the software is passing through the encoded audio.
These streams cannot be altered or manipulated, especially DTS
which is a very tightly licensed codec, by the software or the Mini.
So, if the receiver is seeing the digital audio as AC-3 or DTS, the problem is
not with the Mini. -

Compressor 4.1.1
I have an MPEG-2 file with AC3 5.1 audio which plays in QuickTime X as expected.
I have a second MacBook Pro with Compressor 4.1.1, where the audio is fine - both as current video playback of the source, and post-encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting.
However in the Mac Mini Compressor there is no audio (neither in current video playback of the source, nor after encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting).
Troubleshooting
- main difference between machines is the Mac Mini has Elgato software (EyeTV and Game Capture HD)
- I've checked the QuickTime components are same on both machines, except for EyeTV audio component on Mac Mini
- there are no plug-in audio components
- I've repaired permissions using Disk Utility
- I moved Compressor to trash, deleted compressor plist files, and reinstalledMediaInfo trace:

Hi, After completing a project I try to burn a DVD on PE3. It burns the picture fine nut no audio. I try to burn the same to hard drive and again, good picture but no sound. Yet I am able to transfer it to tape no problem!
What could be the cause? My DVD playback software reports no audio stream on the VOB files, so it looks like its not encoding audio. (I've checked all the settings.)
ThanksMark C Lawrie
The reason that I questioned you on the Vaio involvement was
1. I thought that I remembered a similar PE3/Vaio problem at another web site which ended with Adobe saying that there was no fix for it for PE3 and 4.
2. And, there is the following Steve Grisetti FAQ on this kind of a topic:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5a5ae
Since Steve Grisetti is visiting this topic, for now I will step aside, just temporarily, for his further comments. I want to make sure that I am not mixing "apples and oranges" in my thoughts as applied to your specific situation. As author of the FAQ, he will tell us if I have.
Many times, users have the same outwardly manifested problem, but have different causes for the problem.
To be continued, if necessary..... -
i have noticed that dvd playback is slow . i use vlc and kaffeine.if the dvd files are on hdd the playback is again slow.i have nvidia 630m optimus
Hi
If this delay appears only playing the movies and audio using the CD/DVD drive then you should check this short workaround:
1) Access the device manager
2) Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI option
3) go to Primary IDE channel -> Properties -> Advanced settings
4) here you should check if DMA if available was chosen
If its not set to DMA if available then remove the Primary IDE channel from the device list and reboot the notebook.
After the notebook has booted again, check the single point again and check if DMA if available appears again

Sound aok everywhere except dvd playback.
In recent weeks... suddently my dvd playback seems dead.
Video fine...just no audio via the HDMI via the HP w2408h monitor.
AOK via headset even with DVD.
AOK on sound in all other cases other than DVD.
Music & all else aok...and even past video...recorded.
Am assuming that I did something, but I havent installed anything new in 5 months other than 4 games (for grandkids) and TEXTPAD (related to schoolwork).
And those games were installed for weeks before the dvd sound disappeared..
Current solution is to use headset when I want to watch dvd.
I can still do everything else as if dvd wasnt problmatic right now.
Drivers & updates - everything is current ...

Audio Skipping in recording and playback
Hey gang,
Ever since my Leopard install a few weeks ago, Soundtrack (2.0.1) has been skipping playback very bad. The audio cuts out for a split second every 2 seconds or so, and it's random and nasty sounding. Clearly this won't do. Ironically, myspace and other websites sites with media are also having the same problem.
anyone have an idea what the deal is?
I haven't changed my hardware config, but upggraded OS's, and everything had been running well under the previous OS. I notice a general sliggishness that I fed with more ram and it's still a problem. Before I start throwing more hardware the problem... your advice please.
ran diagnostics, everything seems to be working mormally,
what's next?Okay Update for ya,
Took ol' Bessie into the apple store tonight to see a Genius.
Genius Mike at the apple store downtown performed a boot using his own external hard drive (running leopard). We were experiencing the same problem booting with his drive... a metronomic clicking gap popping (every second, like a clock) when listening to flash-based audio in safari. I had uninstalled my pro apps so I wasn't able to test soundtrack pro, but I imagine the same thing would have happened, because the safari audio was screwy.
just to be clear, iTunes is NOT screwed up for me. In fact, iTunes plays perfectly, which is why I'm still skeptical that this is a hardware issue. Mike at the apple store suggested this was a hardware issue that might be solved with the purchase and installation of a new motherboard ($875). I was not so keen to do that right away. I'm going to try a fresh install of OsX 10.4 first, after I back up everything to the 1TB external drive i bought on the same visit.
I want to again make it clear what my problem is...
I don't know which of these is the CAUSE or EFFECT of the problem but here they are:
- a process named coreaudiod (you can find this in activity monitor) is showing a rhythmic increased level of activity every one second, spiking to about 3-5%. Then it pops back down to 1% for a few seconds and jumps back up every second for 3-15 seconds.
- audio in safari (only flash driven audio like youtube and other flash sites) skips/pops or gaps for an instant every second. This repeats 3-15 times and then there is like 3-4 seconds of clear audio, and then the whole thing repeats
- system sounds from skype or aim (incoming message sounds) are also affected, but since they're so breif, usually, they sound like they're cut off half way through the sound.
- the same rhythmic audio popping occurs when playing back or recording in soundtrack pro.
- the following applications are NOT AFFECTED: quicktime, iTunes, logic pro, logic express
I am lividly upset at this problem because of my nearly persistent use of soundtrack pro for the last year... it's totally unusable now.

Stuck notes after stopping playback
Hello,
I'm having a problem whereby after stopping playback, the currently playing notes are stuck (sustain indefinitely). I find notes always stick, whether hitting the space bar or clicking the stop icon.
- I'm using Logic 9.0.2 with default settings on Snow Leopard 10.6.1.
- My audio interface is an Edirol FA-101.
- My controller is a Yamaha Motif via the Yamaha USB MIDI driver 1.2.
I thought perhaps it was the MIDI driver (not officially supported on Snow Leopard), so I uninstalled it and switched to my Edirol UM-880, with new 1.0 Snow Leopard driver.
Now I get the same problem with the space bar, but the stop icon works most of the time, but not always!
What is going on?!Hi Andrew
In Logic try going to "Preferences": "Midi": "Reset Messages": and tick the first box "Control 123 (All Notes Off)". That should stop the notes hanging every time you hit stop. I have the same problem with a Motif XS Rack. I find that also ticking the bottom option "Send Used Instrument Settings on Reset" helps keep Logic playing the correct sound on the Motif (assuming you are using Midi Patch/Bank messages to select individual sounds. Hope this helps. -

I think that you have multiple sound devices and their boot order changes after each reboot.

Audio Probelms with some DVDS/BLU-RAY discs when using optical out to Audigy 2
I have my PS3 connected to my Audigy 2 ZS soundcard via optical?cable to play 5. sound on my PC sound system (Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.). I have finally successfully played discrete 5. sound with some DVDs. I have changed my optical out setting to bitstream in the DVD/BD menu (XMB) and selected optical with everything checked in (XMB). So far, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and Minority Report have worked in proper 5. (not stereo matrixing). Both Dolby Digital and DTS tracks (I know it works because it sounds twice as good as Dolby?Digital) ?work in Minority Report. The problem is... Jurassic Park (DTS) and my Blu-ray MIssion Impossible 3 have no audio (probably more too). The STRANGE part is if I fastfoward both films by .5x (so that audio plays in FF) I can hear audio. When FF by .5x the display signal on the top of the screen changes from DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL: Multi Channel to DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL: 5..
What is with that? Also I still do not get audio in any games, Resistance (Blu-ray)?or any game demo but I do get the audio from the game display screen (XMB). Please if anyone has?any?useful advise or information it would be greatly appreciated.
