No audio on dvd burned with idvd6

Relevant software: Mac OS 10.4.11, iMovie 6.0.3, iDvd 6.0.3
Problem: No audio on dvd burned with iDvd
What happened: Created movie in iMovie (audio and video fine). Shared to iDvd (audio and video fine on playback). Burned Dvd. No audio on dvd but video is fine.
What I did:
1. Saved as disc file. Opened with VLC and DVD Player. No audio, video fine.
2. Deleted encoded assets in iDvd then 1 (above).
3. Removed non-Apple extensions in Library/Quicktime. Then 2 and 1 (above).
I've read other discussions about this same issue and followed those recommendations as well as that in the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303550.
Clearly I'm missing something. But, what is it? Anyone have any suggestions?

i too am having the same problems with iDVD 6.0.4. I just ended up wasting 5 hours of time burning these damned DVDs... what was really strange is that the first DVD I burned was a dual-layer, and I checked that one on a set-top DVD player and it worked fine. I then needed 5 more copies of the DVD, so I simply inserted a fresh dual-layer DVD into the drive at iDVD's prompt of 'Would you like to burn this disc again?'.
Assuming that they would all be fine since the first one was fine, I simply burned 5 more DVDs. Only now, checking them after I've wasted a godawful amount of time burning them, do I find that they're all f#$ked. Thanks apple.
Crap like this makes me steamed. My PC burning software doesn't have nearly the same simple, elegant interface as iDVD, but it also lacks this CATASRTOPHIC problem. I mean, dual layer DVDs are relatively pricey... so screw apple. i will be glad to go home to my PC after being forced to work with this junky, buggy software.

This is not a Final Cut Express related topic. You're more likely to find LaCie DVD burner users on forums like iDVD and DVD Studio Pro.

  • DVD burned with Encore on MacPro will not play in all players

I burned a project with Encore last week using my MacPro's stock DVD burner. I was using Memorex DVD+R disks which I've had mostly success with in the past. I tried the final DVD in 3 players before I considered it the final product, and it worked in all 3...1 high end player and 2 no-names. I went to present the project at a screening the other night and their Sony player would not read the disk (but did read everyone else's)! Luckily I had access to another player, so it wasn't a complete embarrassment, but still unnerving considering I have to make about 60 DVDs next month for a client. Any idea what could have caused this?

The difference between + and - these days should be zero. However, if one format gives you trouble, always try the other.
I've delivered to clients where + was the only format that worked, and I've delivered to clients where - was the only format that worked.
As has been said before, the only way to absolutely ensure maximum compatiblity is to replicate your discs. Obviously that's not prudent in cases like yours. :)

I might be in the same boat as some of you... I got my K8N Neo Platinum exactly a year ago. Up til recently, I was content to burn DVD+R at 8x speed with my Lite-on 411S (Single layer).  However, I was impressed with Plextor's PX-716A, and moreover I went for the SATA version, PX-716SA. For a year, I never had trouble with the WD SATA hard drive connected to the SATA0 port, so I thought there wouldn't be any trouble with the Plextor drive. When I read a DVD-ROM with this drive, I can only get up to 7.3x speed, while DVD+R writes are limited to 6.5x (on good media like Verbatim 16x).  Quality is good, but I am disappointed that the speed is not 16x.  I have the latest Nvidia drivers, and I read a few places that I should use the default Windows drivers.  Could this speed limitation really be caused by a driver?  Secondly, if I install the default Windows driver, what steps do I take (please be specific)?.  What should I look for in the alternative location of the driver. When I removed the Nvidia IDE drivers, they came back on the next boot-up.

  • Using an external DVD burner with iBook G4

    Hi,
I am new to this ibook game so bear with me....I purchased an iBook G4 from ebay and hooked my Lacie external DVD burner up to it as it only has a combo drive. Anytime I try to burn DVDs though it says that it cannot use this disk. When I look in disc utility it says that the write ability of any DVD i insert is read only. Under system profiler my external burner does appear as drive type CD-RW/DVD-RW though. What can I do to burn DVDs? I am running osx 10.3.7 by the way and previously used my external burner with an old emac succesfully.

You could try and see if the external optical drive is supported through
third-party burn software, one example of which may be Burn, it is free.
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html
    {note: there are two links to download - one is for G3s only}
Is the cable you have in good health and do you have a known good spare?
    And update the OS X to 10.3.9. Get the large file 'combo' for this;
and then check for security updates, java updates, etc. Be sure
to run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' before & after updates.
You will have to update the Panther 10.3.x system to 10.3.9 and also
get any other updates available to the system. This may be why the
external drive won't work in the present computer. Also, Burn needs
to have 10.3.9 or later in order to work, too...
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Replace W520 Sony Optiarc AD-7710H DVD Burner with Sony Optiarc BD-5750H Blu-ray Burner?

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives.
Does anyone know whether the front bezel on the W520 is the same for the two Sony Optiarc drives mentioned above?  If not, which Blu-ray burners can accept the W520 front bezel from the Sony Optiarc AD-7710H, which is the drive my machine shipped with?
    Thank you!

  • Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to have to post this here, but your topic "How can I see the bitrate while playing a DVD?" in the DVD SP forum.

Thank you so much. Using VLC 0.8.5 to view bitrate was an excellent discovery for those who don't have the cash to buy the DigiGami poducts.

  • Question re Sony DVD burner with G4 Powerbook

I had some dvds already ripped on my hard drive. Bought the best burner, Sony DRX 830ULT, but after burning a dvd (that was ripped using the Mac) it won't read on the Mac. Question: do I have to both RIP and BURN using the Sony in order for the movies to be played on my Mac?

No problem at all. Patience is one of my virtues.
The MEDIA you are burning to, the DISC, is a special kind of media that only your Sony drive can burn and most likely, read. It is called "DVD+R DL" or "DVD-R DL." This is the format of your disc and our PowerBooks, the 12-inchers, can't read these type of discs.
The last PowerBook G4s to roll off the line before the MacBook Pros took over, the 15" and 17" models, were bumped up to include support for DVD+R DL burning and reading. But not DVD-R DL burning.
The DVD discs you buy in the store that have content already on it, such as Harry Potter (for lack of a better example), are on a "double-sided" disc. Each side has a surface to write on. The "dual layer" discs have only one side that can be written on but have TWO layers.
It is confusing. It's confusing me now and I'm having to check the wording.
Basically, your problem is again what I explained before. To give an example, your Sony is burning oranges but your PowerBook's SuperDrive can only read apples.
What's even more confusing is the terms are intertwined. Some people confuse DUAL LAYER and DOUBLE LAYER and DOUBLE-SIDED altogether.
Double Layer DVD disc = "DVD+R DL" media that only has one side to burn to.
Dual Layer DVD disc = "DVD-R DL" media that only has one side to burn to.
Double-sided DVD disc = any "DVD±R" or "DVD±RW" media that has two sides you can burn to.
Here are my sources that I used to explain this all to you in-depth. (My original answer about the disc media not being able to be read by your 12-inch PowerBook was from my own knowledge):
    http://news.sel.sony.com/en/pressroom/b2b/storagesolutions/release/9366.html
    http://dvr.about.com/od/dvdrecordableformats/f/dvddlvsdouble.htm

I guess this other example would help paint the picture. Say you have a 15" PowerBook with the dual layer support. (Remember, not a double-sided disc which any G4 PowerBook can read as long as it has a SuperDrive). Since the 15" PowerBook--last model to roll off the line--supported burning and reading of DVD+R DL disc media, if your Sony burner only does DVD-R DL disc media, then your 15" PowerBook would not be able to read those discs burned by your Sony optical drive.
So that's why our 12-inchers can't read what you've burned recently with your Sony drive. Simply put. (I hope).

  • What is the quality of a DVD burned with the Toast  BluRay plug-in?

I would like to purchase the plug-in for Toast 9 that allows you to burn BluRay content onto a DVD. I realize that it will not produce a "real" BD, but will it produce DVDs that are more HD quality than the normal SD quality?
    Rick

    Hi
Don't know if plug-in works with Toast 9. I got mine by getting the full
    Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro pac.
Yes this can burn Blu-Ray encoded onto a standard DVD (but much less eg about 20-30 minutes)
    • This BD-DVD needs a Blu-Ray Player to be viewed - No DVD-player or Mac can play it
Sony PlayStation 3 Can do that. Some Cheap BD-players neither can not play it.
    Quality.
    • Very much better than SD-DVD. SlideShows can be very good if done right.
I use FotoMagico (in the Roxio Toast set of programs)

  • Bridge CS5 DVD burn with cache...how?

Working in CS5 on a Mac Pro 10.6.x.  My workflow is such that I burn images to archival dvd for off-site storage.  Images are converted to DNG, tagged, rated, applied metadata, and then I build the cache... Tools->Cache and select build 100% previews and export cache to local folder.
I have it so that I see hidden files in the Finder, which it seems the cache files are created as... .BridgeCache and .BridgeCacheT.
Even when I include these files when burning a DVD it seems to me that browsing the finished DVD in Bridge that it still goes through the arduous work of extracting thumbnails and rebuilding a cache.  Doesn't it just read the cache file on the DVD? Would be a hell of a lot quicker in giving me a view instead of waiting for the extracting routine.
    Am I missing something?
    Thoughts?
    --doug

Doesn't it just read the cache file on the DVD? Would be a hell of a lot
quicker in giving me a view instead of waiting for the extracting routine.
    Am I missing something?
Sadly enough you are not missing anything, cache has been a problem from day
one Bridge appeared. The theory you are mentioning is correct, in practice
it does not work. First there where different types of cache for different
versions of Bridge, so earlier saved cache was useless for newer versions.
Now the cache files are the same type but it does not seem to work
flawlessly for all kinds of workflow.
Your workflow with DNG and exported cache means very big hidden cache files
that still need to read its content when pointing at the devices in Bridge.
Specially when having DVD or CD it can take a long time.
I long time ago abandoned the export cache option (also have a very rare bug
that let's me only write a Cache T file without problems, the second times
it gives me a fault warning that it needs to be overwritten).
However, when you are using DNG files all the metadata and rating is kept
within the DNG file itself, your exported cache only contains the build
thumbs and previews (especially 100 % can take a lot of space and reading
    time).
Don't know how many times you have to use those files but you can consider
to use the prefer embedded preview method using the little checker board
icons top right in the Bridge Path Bar.
This lets you quickly show the content and when you need a better look you
can select the wanted file and let it build while pointing at. This is a
    quicker workflow to my opinion.
Downside is you have to reset the preview method to HQ when returning to
normal workflow with central cache. Having opened multiple windows in
Bridge, this setting affects all the open windows instead of only the active
    window.

  • DVDs burned with Encore CS6 won't play in PC/MAC standard player

Wondering what is going on with an issue on Encore CS6 (W8), as it will burn DVDs that work with PowerDVD but not with OS X's default media player or Windows Media Player
Same computer earlier this year with Encore CS5.5 (W7), DVDs would read in WMP as well
    No problem with blu-rays

What brand of blank, and what burning speed?
Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim Two layer Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable Two layer

  • Anyone using LaCie d2 DVD burner with mini?

I am considering a mini with 1g ram and a 23" moniter. I've been reading that some external DVD burners are significantly faster the the superdrive in the mini. I'm looking at the LaCie because it also burns labels and includes Toast 6, which I must have to burn multipe sessions. Also, it will enable me to burn dbbl layers and can be used with other computers we have. Anyone have experience with this?

    Karen,
You do not have to buy Toast to burn multiple sessions using a built in drive - it is possible with the software Apple provide (Disk Utility). There are, however, other advantages of Toast which make it well worth obtaining. Toast doesn't have to build a disk image before it starts burning the CD/DVD, which Apple's software must do - this is particularly significant when writing DVDs on the Mini because duplicating 4.7 GB of data on the computer's less-than-speedy hard drive adds ~25 minutes to the time taken to burn the disk. Secondly, the ability to select a specific disk format in Toast, in my case ISO9660, is indispensable.
For what its worth my Mini, with a SuperDrive, can burn a full DVD in ~16 minutes using Toast, or burn and verify in just over half an hour. I use Sony DVD-R media and burn 10-20 disks a week.
