No audio on rented HD movies now !!

When I rent HD movies on my AppleTV now, the video plays but with no audio. I have rented many HD movies in the past with the same exact setup (AppleTV, Denon AVR receiver, HDMI out to TV) and had no problems whatsoever.
Other than these HD movies, all other audio (music, movie trailers, movie "previews", YouTube, etc) plays fine.
At first, I thought I got a bad movie download, contacted Apple and the re-sent the movie to me. The second attempt also had no audio, and I tried downloading a completely different movie in HD last night, with the same results (no audio).
I was on the phone w/AppleCare rep for quite awhile, did a factory restore (wipes everything off the AppleTV), and then a software update. Apple re-sent me both movies yet again to try, and still NO audio.
Reading through these forums, I found that under audio settings, if I turn Dolby Digital "off" then I am able to get sound to play.
It seems that this started w/the latest software update (rev 2.3) but I can't guarantee it.
Has anyone else seen the same issue, or have any solutions?
thanks
Tom

Looks like I found/fixed the issue. On my Denon receiver, when Apple TV was selected as the input, there was an audio "mode" button that cycles through various setting options (DTS, etc).. and one of the options is "auto" which I then tried. Low and behold, with the "auto" setting, and with the Apple TV setting of Dolby Digital set to "on" I can now hear the audio for the rented HD movies. Not sure if something changed in the AppleTV software, or somewhere along the line over the last few weeks something got changed on the Denon receiver, but I'm back in business....

I rented a movie from iTunes. But cannot find it now.

iTunes on a computer will indeed show rented movies in the Movies section of the library. And this thread was last active three months ago. If you're having a problem, start your own thread with details. You won't get much help dropping comments into old threads.

  • Tried to rent a movie. now my screen is stuck on "processing" for several days. How to I get rid of this?

Has anyone else had their screen stuck on "processing" forever, after trying to rent a movie?

About the only thing you can try is using the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion on your Mac over the top of the current install. that will reset all system files and should not touch your personal files or the apps you have installed.
Or iof you have a recent Time Machine backup use that to restore your Mac to that point in time.

  • HT1657 Can I rent a movie now and watch it on an airplane without an Internet connection?

Once you rent the movie from itunes, does it down load to your device so you can watch it later without a wifi connection?

It will download onto the device or computer that you rent it on. If you are doing it on your iPad, then as long as it has completed downloading to the Videos app then you should be able to watch it without being online

    Hello there, Josemc.
The following Knowledge Base article provides the answer to your question:
iTunes Store: Viewing and downloading HD content on iPad
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4095
Specifically the last bullet point in the following:
    Movie Rentals on iPad
SD movie rentals are in a widescreen format and have a resolution of up to 480p.
HD movie rentals have a resolution of up to 1080p1 on iPad.
Movies rented on iPad cannot be transferred to other devices and can only be viewed on iPad.
An Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback of movie rentals.

Did you rent the film directly on the iPhone ? I've never rented films, but from : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1415 :
You can move the rental between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period. However, the movie can only be played on one device at a time. If you rent a movie on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on that device.
If you've rented a film on your computer's iTunes then you should be able to sync it to your iPad from your computer's iTunes via the Movies tab that shows on the right-hand side of iTunes when you've selected the iPad 'device' on its left-hand side

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • HT2729 video isn't syncing with audio on rented movie

I have now tried renting three movies using iTunes on my laptop. Unfortunately, none of the movies have worked properly. The audio is about 10 seconds ahead of the film, so the  sound doesn't sync with the movie.  What can I do? I did get refunds for the other two movies, and will ask for one for this movie as well, but I am trying to figure out why this is happening.
Netflix and other video services work just fine on my laptop.

I'm assuming that you are using the Sound class to control
the MP3 sounds? If that is the case then they will not be sync with
your timeline and if your animations are too much for the SWF to
stay at the 30fps rate then it will slow down to complete the
    animations.
One way to sync them up would be to place them in a layer in
your timeline and then in the Parameters box at the bottom set the
    Sync dropdown to Stream.
Then if your movie slows the audio and animations will still
    be together.
This is not as flexible as you may currently have it but it
    might work for you.

  • HT1600 hi i rented a movie and wanted to play it in my livingroom apple tv i get the picture but it says my audio is unsupported what can i do

hi i recently rented a movie and when i wanted to play it on my apple tv the picture was there but it said unsupported audio i was watching it last night now its not working what could be wrong

Welcome to the Apple Community Newbieappleguy.
Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
If you are using a sound system/receiver, make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device?

    Hi brett242424,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The movie would be in your iTunes library, in the Movies application.  However, if the rental period has expired, you may need to contact the iTunes Store Support about your situation:

I rented a movie from ITunes yesterday and now I cannot figure out how to watch it on Apple TV.  I have done this before, and to watch it later on, I would go back under the "Movies" option, find the movie, and there would be a Play option available.  We did the update to Apple TV yesterday.  Now when I go back to the movie, I see the original options. Preview, Rent, Buy, etc.  When I click on Rent again, it says the movie has already been rented but not downloaded. It instructs me to go under Settings/Downloads/Check Downloads, but there is nothing under Settings about Downloads.  I found an option to Check for Rentals, but when I click on that option, it just keeps searching, with no results.  Any ideas?  This worked before the update, even though it took forever to download a movie....

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.
