No audio out on internal speakers or headphones from external device

I'm using an intel iMac 17" I tried to plug in an external cassette deck, and listen to it through the internal speakers. Even though all system prefs for audio work as expected, and I can see the audio meters on screen operating, nothing will induce it to play sound either through the internal speakers, or headphones.
The audio is certainly going in there, as it recorded perfectly in iMovie. The internal speakers work perfectly for alerts, iTunes, the web, everything. But no external device will work.
I've tried an iPod, a microphone, and a cassette deck, all with the same result. I've launched Garage Band as this can upset the midi player, but it's fine. I've visually checked the settings, no problem.
As an alternative I also tried an iMic and stopped using the jack input on the iMac. Still nothing. I plugged headphones into the iMic, nothing. No audio will play unless it's already on the Mac. External audio goes in there and dies before it reaches the speakers.
All the visual info I get in the sound panel regarding connection options, output etc, is exactly as expected, I just can't get any audio at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions? There's only a few day's warranty left...
Many thanks.
Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Programmes in regular use are Freehand, Photoshop, Freeway, Keynote, iMovie, iDV

Hello David,
Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the website for Linein, and I already have Audio Hijack pro installed, which contains this application. When I ask AH to record the system audio, the volume meters are dead, I hear nothing, and record nothing - unlike iMovie.
When I do ask it to record, I can hear a thumping sound from the Mac speakers, but nothing else.
I'm really desperate for a solution to this; I can't understand why it's so hard to achieve. If it was just the line in socket I'd suspect that, but a USB connection as well? I don't understand that at all.

  • HP 2000 laptop audio stopped working- internal speakers and headphone jack

FOr the past few days the audio/speakers to my laptop have been going off, and then back on after a bit.Today I was in the middle of watching amovie when it stopped again, and everything Ive tried so far hasn't worked (going to restart netxt) . I tried plugging in my earbuds but the audio jack isn't working. Im also getting the Smos 502 error, and Im not sure if they're connected. I have the HP 2000 model C2N25UA#ABA

I was wrong - I did upgrade to a 3 yr warranty (had forgotten about this) so hopefully it's covered!

  • Internal speakers and headphones are not working

I have hp g6 2231tx os Windows 8, brought it a month ago..now it's internal speakers and headphones are not working..I enabled in playback device from sound mixer and reinstalled drivers but still not working..it's because of hardware or software??

    Hi,
It could be either Hardware or Software related, so try the following and let me know.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58517.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • No sound from internal speakers or headphones when using ART Tube interface

Hi - can anyone help with this...
I have no sound fromthe internal speakers or headphones when using my new ART Tube USB interface - I get a nice loud recording level from the ART but cant monitor - in Logic 7.2
Audio hardware interface in logic 7.2 is set to USB Codec - just like the ART manual states
And the SOUND control panel is set to speakers/headphones
    But no love...
    Any comments welcomed
    Si2

By default, OSX will only let you have one interface active at any one time - so if you specify the ART as your interface to get sound in, you don't have access to your regular interface to listen to it.
But there is a workaround - open the Audio/MIDI Setup utility, create a new "Aggregate Device", and add both your required audio interfaces to it.
Now, back in Logic, select the aggregate device you created as the audio device, and now all your inputs and outputs from both interfaces are available - the aggregate device acts as one big interface containing both your hardware interfaces.

  • Sound: internal speakers or headphones

    Hi Guys,
In Leopard the headphone was always connected to the computer and it worked independently
of the sound system. It was convenient.
With Snow I have to plug/unplug the headphone (by turning the computer around) because
    sys preferences > sound
ha either internal speakers OR headphones. Rather inconvenient.
Is there a way to select both as it was under Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Mike-oz

In Leopard the headphone was always connected to the computer and it worked independently of the sound system.
You are the second person I know to report that audio behavior. I have never seen a Mac that had independent control of the internal speakers from external headphones/speakers. Perhaps this was a luck of happenstance that vanished with SL installation. I was not aware, nor did I think it was standard Mac OS X behavior. I have looked for this on the Macs in Apple Stores and have never seen it there as well.

  • Audio lost for internal speakers on HP620

I have lost the sound on my HP 620 laptop. In the Audio control and device manager everything looks fine: drivers are visible and it's stated "This device is working correctly". I can see the green gauge in the Volume control moving when I test audio, BUT nothing comes out of the internal speakers.
There are two devices in Audio playback tab:
Speakers/Earphones IDT High Definition Audio CODEC   and
Earphones (real time data) IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
I tried uninstalling the Speakers/Earphones device, downloading the latest driver from HP and installing again, but no luck.
When I connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI the sound works fine.
The only major change I can think of now is a BIOS update which HP Support Assistant did on June 2. The sound problems started before that.
I haver an HP 620 Serial number: {Personal Information Removed}, Product number: WT249EA#UUW, Vista 64 bit.
    Hope someone can help, Mikael

Hello MW55, welcome back to the thread!
I was speaking with Joe_Thompson specifically.  However, that was only because you hadn't responded to the thread in a while.  I can still certainly try to help you as well!
Microsoft has an online tool for diagnosing audio problems.  I suggest you first try that utility to see if it is able to affect your issue.  Here is a link to the utility.
How long exactly has your problem been going on?  A good next step to take would be to try and perform a Microsoft System Restore.  This will refresh your computer back to a time before the issue began (if you have a date prior to the issue available).  This article has instructions for performing a System Restore.
Let me know the results and have a great day!

  • Macbook Pro no sound from internal speakers or headphones

I have a macbook pro (mavericks). There is no audio coming from the internal speakers and when headphones are plugged in there is still no sound. There is no red light coming from the headphone port either. Any advice?

Try plugging the headphones in and out 10-12times, while toggling the volume and mute buttons.
Have you tried cutting the end off a cotton swab and GENTLTLY swabbing the the headphone swabbing the port 9;00 clock to 3:00 clock, there is a micorswitch that some times gets "hung up" and this can free up the witch.
Also you can try going to to applications/utilities/ Audio MIDI Set up. app and see if you can select built in there.
To get more aggressive you can try these options:
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Click "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select Computer, then Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
    Open "Audio" folder.
Right click these two files and select "Move to Trash".
    com.apple.audio.DevicesSettings.plist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Close the window. Restart the computer
Go to Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup/Built-In Output/Output and in Format change from the default 2ch-24bit integer to any other format (say, 2ch-32bit float). This should activate the headphone jack.  I moved the format back to the original 2ch-24 integer setting and the headphones continued working.  So it seems that (for some reason) the original default setting does not recognize a headphone being inserted, but after performing this "resetting" it seems to come to its senses and behave properly from then on
if these do help your issues, please post back, there may be other options.
It is best to start a new post, rather adding on to an already existsting, as you will get more people looking at it, and thus offering more advice/sugestions.

  • No Audio Output or Internal Speakers

Just this weekend my computer suddenly stopped emitting any sound. I can change the volume levels but there are no "chirping" sounds when I change it. I have no sound when I restart my computer, I fiddled with the audio output jack to see if it was the switch, but nothing happened.
My computer thinks it has sound. Sometimes when I try to have it make sound it will make a small pop sound. Other than that, nothing at all.

I'm having the same sort of troubles. I checked the Sound pane in Preferences, and that fixed it once, where under Output it was set incorrectly.
But since then, I've been having trouble even doing that: It's stopped detecting if I have headphones plugged in, and says only "Internal Speakers". Under that, instead of controls, it says "The selected device has no output controls".
So what have I ended up doing? I noticed that AirPhones worked (software-based, forwards over wifi to your iPhone, sounds like a 96kbps MP3 at times) -- occasionally as what I assume is a side-effect of this problem, iTunes stops playing and stays at 0:00 even when the Play button changes to Pause -- So given that another sound option worked, I decided I'd plug in my Creative E-MU 0404 to use as an external sound card. And the sound is perfect.
I'd suggest anyone having troubles with their Mac's sound card to add a new one. Unfortunately, you'll need to skip any PCIe Creative sound cards, and even likely most of the X-Fi series, as the USB ones I looked at don't support Mac. The best thing to get, it looks like, is the Creative Xmod. It has Mac, Linux and Windows compatibility, and will work with a power adapter with any MP3 player. It will sound AMAZING, I promise. My dad has one, actually.
Those looking for excuses to use XLR mics or MIDI in Garageband, grab something like the Creative EMU 0404 if you're made of money (sigh) or if you have Firewire for extra XLR inputs, pay the extra. (It's worth it for the flexibility. I'd rather have 8 channels for 3 times the price than the 2 channels I have now. Live and learn.)
Of course, Creative isn't the only option out there, you can also take a look at M-Audio, or if you don't care about sound quality (I'm only assuming here), even Griffin iMic: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic

  • 10.6.8 - No audio out (but internal speaker fine) - MBP5,5

After upgrading to 10.6.8, plugging in my earphones or headphones does squat. My internal speaker still works fine though
I've tried the AppleHDA rollback (to 10.6.7 version) to no avail  - each time either audio disables totally or I get the "Incorrectly installed extension" error
The most interesting thing is my problem seems subtlely different from the 'popular' audio problems. Most bizarrely, audio out works until I log in (works on the login screen). It dies and I receive asserts on the console after logging in though (I'm not on the machine and I can't remember the exact assert message but something about failure during GOTO in some audio handler)
I haven't tried making another user account (to see if it's account specific) but I have tried deleting all manner of user-specific audio plists as well as doing SMC reset, permissions repair etc.
Any ideas? + Anyone have the same problem? (I'm presuming this is specific to this MBP + config)

one thing i have just tested i can copy files from my mac desktop to my macbook fine mmm!

  • No sound in internal speakers and headphones

I am having problems with my sound. There is no sound through both headphones and internal speakers. I have tried using the Audio MIDI setup, and still no luck. In MIDI it says headphones and internal speakers when I plug and unplug the headphones. If there are any solutions or any helpful threads that I have over looked please let me know thank you.

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums & Macs!
Are there headphines plugged in that don't work?
If no headphones, but it says that is a choice, then something is preventing the headphone jack from closong likely, might carefully use a tooth pic to gently poke around in it, or use a headphones to test.

  • Line/Optical out and internal speakers?

When a line is inseted into the jack whether it be optical or RCA leads the sound will only be outputted from the jack - obvously.
Is this a software or hardware switch? Is there any way of disabling it allowing sound from both output and internal iMac speakers?

I suppose a speaker with a USB connection will not
    override the internal speakers...
Ah, but they do as you must select your output source - in my case I have a 1st generation set of USB Soundsticks and you must select between internal or Soundsticks.
BTW - for those looking for speakers, I would stay away from any USB speakers still out there (although it burns me to do so I might buy a pair of Soundsticks II which use the audio jack... Garageband 3.01 hangs when using the USB Soundsticks unless they're plugged directly into the computer - losing one of the USB 2 ports which HURTS!).
