No audio out through Mini Displayport?

Last night I hooked up my first-gen MBA to my plasma TV using a connector that converted the Mini Displayport to HDMI. The movie I streamed from Netflix looked great. One problem -- no audio. I guess there's no audio out through the Mini Displayport? I was forced to hook up computer speakers to my MBA. Is there a way I can get audio to go through the Mini Displayport rather than the audio-out/headphone jack?

There are a couple of adapters out that will convert DVI plus optical audio to HDMI (with audio). They are all made by the same company (though they are branded and priced differently). I think they are currently running around $100. The problem you might run into is HDCP. Apple doesn't do HDCP with their DVI... so you'll end up not having a compliant HDCP chain... if that is important to you.
If you do this setup, make sure you have your TV set to a setting that is pixel to pixel... that is, doesn't adjust for overscan. Lest you loose some of your computer desktop.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Is it possible to play iTunes audio out through USB to receiver to power speakers?

I thought you should be able to.Play iTunes audio out through USB to a receiver equipt with USB mode as I can with my iPad Air, but I can,t find in preferences on my 2013 iMac any out put and I get no signal to the receiver/amp. Is it possible? What am I doing wrong?

    Yes
A 3.5mm to RCA cable or adapter will work fine for stereo between the Mac's headphone jack and receiver's RCA input.
    for example's
    > http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Cable/dp/B0018MI5F6
    > http://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-40645-Stereo-Adapter/dp/B000J1H4VI/
Additionally if your receiver is equipted with digital input, you could use a Toslink cable with a 3.5mm adapter on the Mac end.

  • Audio through mini displayport

I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 with Mini Displayport.  I want to use this to play Hi-def video and surround sound audio on my HDTV.  Can this be done and if so, how?

Apple's Mini DisplayPort only started supporting audio out on the 2010 machines. So yours won't push audio.

  • HT4806 Mac mini digital audio out through the headphone jack

I'm misled by this sentence for audio out port from the support page: "For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone".
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5539
It is there for all mac minis starting from 2010 model.
Does it mean electrical digital signal? Any chance to get S/PDIF coaxial signal?

If an optical signal is OK,  you just need one of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00016W6Y6
To convert the optical signal to a co-ax one will need a more complex/expensive convertor.

  • Audio through Mini Displayport (HDMI Adapter)

I'd like to connect my MBP to my amp using a HDMI adapter. Will any audio pass through this? Enabling a 5.1 output?
    Cheers

Okay, now I'm confused. I always understood the digital audio limitation on the mini display output to be the result of stepping it down to DVI before bumping it back up to HDMI with an adaptor. Unless there's a mini display-to-HDMI option AND the mini display port is wired for audio, I don't expect anyone will be making a single-port, single-cable solution anytime soon.
In any case, that's not what caught my attention on this thread... I'm still trying to get dolby 5.1 (i.e. AC3 passthrough) to work +at all+ on my audio output with a Toslink adaptor and Quicktime/iTunes. I've noticed that Plex passes AC3 bitstreams over the Toslink without any issues, so I know it's not an Apple hardware limitation. I just don't want to use Plex to watch my movies in 5.1
I've messed around with the output settings nine ways to Sunday, but it's obvious the downconversion to digital stereo is happening in QT long before it ever gets to the hardware. Has anyone heard a good reason yet why AC3 passthrough was disabled in Quicktime and iTunes? It used to work.

  • HDMI Audio through Mini Displayport?

    Hi all
I've just ordered a mini-display port/HDMI adapter that supports audio which I assume would work on my 13"MBP. However I have just been looking at a few pages on the net that put me in some doubt. My MBP was purchased mid May 2010 and I was told in the Apple store at the time that it was the latest model, just in, as the line up was revised April 2010? But there appears to be a lot of confused surround it and if it supports audio via the mini-display port.
Can anyone confirm the functionality on this model?

Yes, the MBP 7,1 supports audio via mini-Displayport, so assuming your adapter also supports audio as advertised, it should do what you bought it for.

  • Is there a way to force audio out through the Thunderbolt port?

I am trying to connect a 15" MacBook Pro to an InFocus 3916 using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
I know that the computer, adapters, and cables I am using support audio over HDMI.
I have tested 4 separate adapters, 2 cables, and 2 computers, all of them work when hooked up to a Samsung HD TV.
I know the Projector supports audio over HDMI, because I plugged a Apple TV into the projector using the same cable, and it worked fine.
When I am using the Samsung HD TV: System Preferences->Sound->Output shows "Samsung" in the choices of outputs.
When I try using any of the three Infocus Projectors, it only shows the internal audio.
I have tried resetting the PRAM, and SMC. I have tried plugging in an audio cable to my computer to force a refresh of the Sound Preference Pane... I have tried turning on and off the projector.
At this point I am trying to find a way to force Mac OS X to recognize the Projector as an audio output... Or at least to force the computer to think there is something there, so that it will push sound out the thunderbolt port.
    MBP Hardware Configuration:
    15" MacBook Pro, Late 2011
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
    OS X Lion 10.7.2
Latest updates except Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.1

--- MikeI don't use Netbeans, but I would guess that it too pipes Standard Out and Standard Error to the same console. You didn't address my comment. Are you printing to System.err as well? This happens implicitly if you use Exception.printStackTrace(), for example.

  • (Too) Variable Audio Output through mini jack

Tried looking through prior posts to see if anyone had remotely similar problems. Just lately my 5G iPod will radically change in volume level mid-song; so much so that it distorts and is in danger of blowing my speakers in my car. Don't have Sound Check on but doesn't seem to be an issue here as it's midsong. I mostly listen to it through speakers plugged in to the mini jack, or headphones and not the dock. Any ideas what this might be caused by?

  • VGA out to Mini Displayport in: possible?

I'd like to use my 27" i5 iMac as an external display for my crusty work laptop (Dell Latitude D630).
The only video out on the laptop is a VGA port - no DVI, no DisplayPort.
Does such a creature as a VGA->DisplayPort adapter exist? Will I be able to drive the full resolution from my laptop? (it has a 128MB nVidia Quadro 135NVS video card)

    Hi Peter,
such 'creatures' might exist (I am not aware of one...) but it would be a lot more than a simple adapter since it would have to take the analog video signals from VGA and convert them to digital video signals for the Mini DisplayPort.
So, most likely such thing would cost in the range of 300USD !
And even then, the quality of the converted signal might not be up to the quality you now have with the iMac display.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Can late 2008 MacBook Pro play audio though the Mini DisplayPort?

I've got a Mini DisplayPort on my late 2008 MBP and I've got an MDP to HDMI adapotor that's meant to be audio ready.  I can't get it working with audio (ok with display) and HDMI isn't in the sound output menu.

Yes, unless you buy one of the combination adapters I linked in this post last night, or a similar one:

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.
