No audio output during movie import

I'm just getting started with building my first movie using HD6 and I can't hear any audio from the movie that I'm capturing. Playing the captured movie back has audio though. What settings do I have wrong? I want to be able to hear the audio track as I'm capturing from my DVcam.

I've got the exact same problem: no audio when importing a movie clip from camera (Canon Elura 65). It plays back just fine once imported, but you can't hear anything when playing through iMovie and while importing.
Is this a HD6 and Mactel problem?

  • Audio output port moves and wont let me plug in my cable

Suddenly, when i try and put in the audio jack for my 2 speakers into my iMac it seems to not click in. When i shined a flash light at it the port it seemed to move when i plugged in the cable. This has all happened rather quickly which is making me confused. I use my iMac for gaming and never plug in cables with a heavy hand as i am young and i promised to look after this iMac. After understanding what has happened, i ask my parents what might have happened and they did not have a clue. My question is whether it is normal for the silver ring inside the port's hole usual moves and why my cable isn't clicking in.
    EDIT:
    - I have tested multiple audio output devices like speakers, earphones and headphones and it still wont click and it still moves.
    - My iMac is running with 8gb of ram, Intel Iris Pro 1GB Graphics card and 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor.
If you need any more details please request them.

Clean the lint/debris from the connector.

  • Is possible to have audio output during video recording with Canon 70D?

    Hi everybody,
I am owner of a Canon 70D camera and I use this to record video (live) jazz small groups.
I use for this audio input either external microphones (Rode or AKG) or my Zoom H4n digital handy recorder which has inside microphones.
I want to ask you if there is a solution to hear at the same time the audio output from my Canon 70D via earphones which is suitable for studio recordings.
I hope to have a clear answer about this....

I know on mackbooks I've seen firewire used as an input for a Weiss Dac if you're into two channel audio.  Do any reiceivers take firewire as an input for hometheater?  Has anyone tested Firewire outputs on their W series?  I'm told that firewire is sometimes preferable to USB, I'm not sure why this would be, can USB support passthrough of DTS encoded signals?
In the case that firewire works and you Do not have a firewire source, maybe something like this would be of value  It converts firewire to digital coaxial s/pdif and allows passthrough of DTS and AC3.

As I'm into audio the critical thing here (and what you're paying for when you purchase blue-ray, is maintaining the digital information from the disk in an unconverted form.  You want a direct bit pass through, and you want as little jitter introduced to the signal as possible.  You most certainly don't want the sound card getting in the way, Digtital to Analog converting and then reverse packaging it up and putting it out over the soundcard digital out.  My problem is I'm not familiar enough with computer audio to know how exactly the sounds is transmitted from your blue ray drive to the digital interface you've chosen.
Anyone know why USB digital out would not be a prefered method?

  • HT4016 How to extract audio from a movie that is already in my project without having to delete and re-import the movie?

    The article is
"How to extract audio from a movie file"
But it only tells you how to extract when you first drag the movie file into the project.  This much is obvious when a dialog presents you with a checkbox asking if you want to "Extract the audio track" ... Duh
    Here was my workflow:
Dragged the movie file into my project
I checked "Extract the audio track"
I shifted the "Movie Start Time"
Extracted audio track did not shift with the movie
I deleted the extracted audio and played the audio directly from the movie
Now, I need the audio extracted again at the current movie position
I knew where this option was in the Logic 9 menus, but I'm having trouble finding it in Logic X
Is this option still available, or has it been removed?

    Solved:
I found the menu option for extracting or re-extracting the movie audio.  BTW, the original article:
Logic Pro 9.1: How to extract audio from a movie file in 64-bit mode
should really also state the menu command for extracting the audio, not just the procedure when first adding the movie to the project.
    Here's the menu command:
    File>Movie>Import Audio from Movie

  • Problem with .mov importing as audio

    Hello!
I'm an old school filmmaker who last did intensive stuff when miniDV was king
Now I find myself at a new job shooting and editing testimonials. Everything was fine for a whole year until I tried to import video from another videographer.
I'm on a Windows 7 machine with Premiere Pro CC v.7.1.0
The note on the footage says shot on Panasonic AF150 (AF100?) 1080 p 60i
The .mov import as audio only. I have tried all kinds of sequence settings to change this. No dice.
Also, the footage has, I believe it's called, "Judder". (I can watch the footage with my QT or VLC player.)
Using a video conversion software I was able to import as MP4. But holy heck do I really have to convert all the clips before I can bring them in?
I am pretty clueless about codecs, which is likely the problem. So a quick explanation on codecs and good places to read up on them would also be extremely helpful.
Here's another issue - the videographer used a fisheye lens (or setting?) for some really nice B roll shots. Unfortunately, they are 4:3 and the  interviews are 16:9! Is this common and ends up being "my problem" or did he goof?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I do have Quicktime installed (which is why I was able to watch it on players outside of Premiere.)
    And the update didn't help

  • Audio Outputs added on XML import

When I import an XML file containing a sequence, I have found that Final Cut will ensure that it has at least as many audio outputs as the default preset.
So if I import a 4 channel sequence with my default output as 2, it will give it 4 outputs. But if I import this sequence with my default output as 8, then it will add 4 more (unwanted) outputs. This is unfortunate, as due to the repetitive nature of my work it's highly beneficial to have 8 as the default.
Is there any way I can specify in the XML file that I only want 4 outputs?
    Thanks.

I think you might want to repost in the "Final Cut Studio" forum; this one is for FCP X only (not FCP 7). It works completely differently.

  • HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)

I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 28
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcf7c000 irq 18
Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:
    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the  "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
    defaults.ctl.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control
I Hope this helps someone else, I found it very hard to piece together how to diagnose and resolve this problem. Here are some of the resources I found useful:
    Arch Wiki ALSA Page
ALSA FAQ for how to change default sound card
    ALSA FAQ
    XBMC Troubleshooting for ION HDMI

@sprince09 Can you hear sound through HDMI when you run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7 ?
(8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...)
    - what does it mean? How do you know that they are working?
What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ?  Can you play the following:
    mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?

  • Rendering a QT movie import

I've got a screen capturing program that outputs QT movies, and you can use pretty much all the available codecs to output it. But when I bring it into FCE, it wants to render it (OK if you don't move or edit it, which i'm not so much as I'm just using a capture of a flash movie as a guide) - any ideas as to a better output format (using Animation now) or other suggestions ?

unfortunately when I was evaluating snapzpro I found I wasn't able to change the (video was ok) audio settings that didn't require rendering when importing into FCE. I found iShowu was a better choice as it was flexible enough to change the recording settings that didn't involve a render when importing into FCE and it recorded to right format rather post capture re-recording.

  • "Crash in progress" Error when I click "Format Options" under "Audio Output"

In the Render Queue, I selected Custom under "Output Module". I changed the Format to "QuickTime Movie" using the JPEG - Photo codec (is it a codec?) However when I clicked on "Format Options" under "Audio Output", I got this.

There are two things here. The first and most important part is that, if there's a button, it shouldn't crash when pressing it. Agreed. Looks like a QT-related issue (if reverting to an earlier version of QT will fix it). But in any case, please feel free to file a bug report explaining the problem here.
The second thing would also be true if the button worked flawlessly: If you want to send to a client a video/audio file with reduced file sizes, bear in mind that Quicktime has not added a specific codec for this purpose since the early 2000s. They chose to follow the standards-based MPEG-4/H264 format. After Effects will make much better H264 files with compressed audio as well, if you pick "H264" as a format in the Output Module. An H264 file with MP4 extension will play perfectly on both Quicktime and the latest version of Flash. An H264 file with MOV extension should have the same quality (but not when done from AE), and it will only be compatible with Quicktime. They are otherwise identical.
Again, nothing in point 2 contradicts the fact that it shouldn't crash.

  • Error during movie encoding - tried all the common things, any suggestions?

HI, Attempting to burn a DVD from iDVD 7.11
I'm getting the "Encoding Error: There was an error during movie encoding" dialogue at the end of an attempted burn. Tried several times and many of the suggestions already on the forum
I have "shared" the movie from iMovie. When it first opens iDVD I have to change the default setting of "best Performance" to "Professional Quality" and the video mode to PAL (I'm in Australia). I change it both in the preferences pane (a change which seems to be ignored when I restart the program) and in the project info.
    - I'm trying just to make a disc image, but haven't got past this first step to getting it to DVD...
    - There is only the movie in my project (I've not added audio or pics in iDVD)
    - I've used the "Modern" theme and deleted the default drop zones and menu audio,
    - I've checked the chapter markers are not at the start of the movie or near any transitions,
    - There are no special characters in the titles,
    - All titles and menus are within the TV safe zone,
    - I've deleted the com.apple.iMovie.plst files and emptied trash,
    - I've tried deleting encoded assets,
    - Repaired permissions, restarted the computer, checked for updated software,
    - (tried a "safe boot" as someone suggested somewhere, but the program couldn't find the movie or audio files),
    - I have 660GB free on the main hard drive,
    - I've disconnected external drives,
    - no error appear in map view,
    - I preview the project and all appears fine,
The original footage was filmed for me. I was given a DVD which I ripped into an MP4, import into iMovie, edited the audio, added AIFF audio, added a jpeg image and 2 transitions. (Unfortunately the audio on the original I was given is unusable, else I could just copy the DVD I was given.)
So if anyone has further suggestions as to what might resolve this issue, please let me know!

Thanks for your post F, much appreciated
The project is 123 minutes, 4.16GB and it's being broadcast on TV, so I need max quality I can get (without spending money!)
I think I have sort of solved the problem - addressing what you've identified in a slightly different way.
Since my previous post, I noticed that clicking on the "Media" tab in the side pane, and selecting "Movies", my project was listed, but when I clicked on it, rather than the thumbnail I get on other movies I've processed, I got this text:
"This iMovie project can't be used because it hasn't been prepared for sharing yet. To prepare it for sharing, open it in iMovie and choose Share > Media Browser.... "
I did that (7 hours processing) then successfully created the disc image (2 hours processing). I have now burnt the DVD using disc utility (1 hour processing). It plays OK on the computer, but I'll need to check it on a normal player before marking this as thread solved (I don't have one here at home).
Unfortunately somewhere in all this processing the video has significantly lost quality. I thought I'd used all the highest quality setting, but will have to go back and check each step again. Unless someone reading this post has noticed anything I've done so far that would compromise video quality. The audio is fine - which for this project is the most important aspect.
So in regard to my initial problem; it seems there is a problem in iDVD not recognising/remembering the set preferences when using the "Share > iDVD " function in iMovie.
To summarise my solution for anyone else who experiences the same issue,
When sending a project from iMovie using "Share > iDVD " it seems you must also choose "Share > Media Browser.... "
This may be specific only to the case where PAL is required.
    PS
I should also note, incase it made any difference, that I found the default headings in the chapter menus had dashes in them (i.e. it defaults to "Scenes 1 - 6", so I changed to "Scenes 1 to 6"). The only other modification I made since my original post was using stills instead of moving thumbnails for the chapter selection.

  • Multi channel audio outputs from a laptop such as 5.1 or 7.1

is it possible to get multi channel audio outputs from a laptop such as 5.1 or 7.1 for watching Movies or television while using Windows media Center.

Ok so i order to help anyone who is interested.
The only ironic solution to this problem i found was to use a plugin called xto7 to convert the xml to the old fcp7 format.
i then imported this into premiere pro.
this was then able to export an OMF that when imported into logic 10 that was using the correct 6ch mono setting as separate tracks.
Insane but it works until Apple fixes the incorrect meta data import in FCPX that sets the xml export to the default import that is always surround.
this is the only way i was able to send stems with all the edit points and fades for the sound editor.
If you don't have premiere lying around you maybe able to do it with fcp7 too we just didn't have it in this studio.
Fingers crossed Apple fixes the fcpx xml export.

  • Apple and Audio outputs

It is clear that Apple is moving to Displayport as their standard video connector, as evidenced by the new MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and LED Cinema Display.
Displayport supports greater video bandwidth (allowing bigger, better screens), and also supports running audio via the same connection, much like HDMI does. As the new LED Cinema Display has built-in speakers and is intended for use with these newly released laptops, you would have expected that Apple would be using the capability of Displayport to also carry the audio signal to this new screen. Apparently this is not the case! Apple for some insane reason do not allow you to route audio via the Displayport connector (the LED Cinema Display gets its audio signal via USB).
So what on earth has this got to do with a Mac mini you ask?
Well the Mac mini is the Mac of choice for Media Center solutions, and Apple are saying 'watch this space' with regards to an update to the Mac mini. Given Apple's move to standardising on Displayport it is likely that a new Mac mini would have a Displayport connector. Therefore this has some great impact on future Media Center capabilities.
    1. The built-in TOS-Link on Macs like all TOS/SPDIF connections only has enough bandwidth to support 2.1 uncompressed audio, or upto 7.1 compressed audio. It cannot support 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed audio as supported by Blu-Ray.
    2. Most Macs and the current Mac mini, and I would guess its likely successor, do not support installing a high-end audio card which might have been a way to add support for up to 7.1 uncompressed audio output.
    3. As has been established Apple are not outputting any audio via Displayport, which is a shame since it would have had the capacity for even 7.1 uncompressed audio.
    4. As a consequence of not outputting any audio via Displayport, a hypothetical Displayport to HDMI converter will also not be able to provide audio via a HDMI connection.
This will not have any impact on movies purchased from the iTunes Store since they offer far less quality than Blu-Ray in both Audio and Video terms, but it does affect a possible future ability to play Blu-Ray discs to their full capabilities. It also means that using non-Apple Displayport displays which happen to also have built-in speakers will be a lot more messy.

I'm not sure how well this posting will be received by the moderating team since it largely deals with future product issues, which are not broadly acceptable here, but there are a few points that come to mind:
Well the Mac mini is the Mac of choice for Media Center solutions..
Not by Apple. In the current product lineup, the AppleTV device is Apple's focus on media-centric solutions - even if not so for the much of the public.
Apple are saying 'watch this space' with regards to an update to the Mac mini....
On the contrary, Apple are saying nothing at all regarding the future of the mini, or the timing or nature of any possible update - other than that there is to be no update during the present Christmas season.
Given Apple's move to standardising on Displayport it is likely that a new Mac mini would have a Displayport connector...
That seems to be a conclusion drawn only from your own supposition. While it may be true that the mini would head in that direction, doing so flies in the face of Apple's marketing of the product as 'the bring your own screen, keyboard and mouse' entry point. Having to add an Apple display (at premium cost) would do little but undermine the entire rationale for the mini, unless a Displayport->VGA or DVI adapter is included or available - in which case the current analog/digital audio output routes for the future product seem likely to remain as is - or potentially enhanced to some degree within the same or very similar configuration.
In the end, if one assumes the Mac mini will remain in the product line up, it seems inevitably to remain as the entry-point, and as such remain very basic in features and dated in overall implementation of technology. Apple themselves don't seem likely to add media-savvy purposing in the model as long as the AppleTV device remain on the market, and as long as that remains, there would have to be on-going doubt about the future of the mini. Were the two to become a merged product, the primary video output would likely have to be centered on TV connectivity rather than displayport panels.
As to Blu-Ray, it will be interesting to see how Apple approach this, as and when they do, but given the mini's purposing, it is not likely to arrive in that model first.
