No audio when capturing via iSight

I begin working with iMovie '08 today. First thing I try to do is capturing my speaking face with the integrated iSight.
When I play the clip (in any way: just skimming / preview / full screen play, etc.) no audio comes out. Is it ok?
I mean: I know that iSight it's just a camera with no mic. But I expected my mac to automatically record audio from the integrated mic.
P.S.: I checked out all the preferences: active mic is the integrated mic (not the line-in mic, which I do not have), volume is ok, no iPod connected (no interferences)... so, I don't know what else I have to check...
Thank you

... er... I solved it by myself ... I just forgot to check "Sound" Preferences ...
active mic was external mic ... that's why I didn't capture sound ... sorry

  • A way to adjust audio when capturing video?

I transfered some video/audio and am having distortion in some audio.
The original audio does not peak and when I captured it in Premiere CS6, it is not peaking out, but when I play back, I can hear occasional distortion. The video is up at:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNNgJiZMrRA
Does this sound like it is overmodulating or is something else happening?
Is there a way to adjust audio when capturing audio or is it a straight feed? Wondering if I can lower the audio input to try to fix.
thanks in advance for your help,
    Charlie

How are you capturing the content? Because in my experince premiere doesn't have a way to adjust the audio levels of what your capturing. However if you post how you are capturing the footage in more detail I might be able to help. Please tell me exactly how you have everything hooked up.
For example if you have the camera hooked straight to the computer or if you're using a capture card if so what kind. Some capture cards have audio gain settings which might be causing the issue. Also some decks and cameras have audio playback volume settings which can also cause audio to be sent to premiere louder than what it started as. So if you give more detail I may be able to offer some sort of help.
One thing you might try though to remove that distortion is too add a lowpass filter to the audio, and start off by setting the low pass filter to like 3000 and just adjust by 500 up or down from there until the distortion goes away. I've had to do this in the past with audio that's distorted before. (Although I haven't experinced the specific issue you're experincing before.) Although it will make the persons voice sound  muffled it will take most of the distortion out. Which getting rid  of distortion at the cost of making it sound somewhat muffled is a decent trade off if worse comes to worse and you can't get the issue figured out.

  • How to Mute audio when capturing

Does anyone know how to mute the audio when capturing HDV. The preview check box is only available when capturing dv. I'd like to be able to use the computer's sound for other things while capturing

Hi Ian, actually there is no "Preview" button in the HDV specific Log and Capture window (which is different from the normal Log and Capture window) so there is no way to mute the audio passthrough when capturing HDV.
Sabapp, asking for an update here is futile, you are talking only to other users. If you want to send feedback, report bugs, make feature requests etc then you should do so on the feedback page here:

  • Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

    Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
    (headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !

  • No audio when capturing from vcr using canopus100

When I log and capture, the video is there, and the audio tracks "show up", however, the audio cannot be heard during capture (previewed), nor is it heard when I export the movie using QuickTime conversion.
I exported the file as a QT movie and played it back in QT, and of course, no audio.
Which switch have I not thrown here?
    Thanks
    JD

OK, I suppose it would help to know the details to provide a proper analysis of the situation.
    1) Canopus 100 is connected to vcr through the s-video input, and the audio is going in through the standard mini-jack interface.
    2) FCP Capture Settings are:
    Device Control: Non-Controllable Device
Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 KHz Copy
Scratch Disk Free Space = 852.3 GB
    3) The audio tracks "show up" when I do a capture...meaning, there are 2 tracks placed in the timeline. I can view some audio activity in the Waveform Monitor, but I do not actually hear any audio.
On that note, audio plays fine when capturing video from my Sony PD150.
Also, when using the same set up with the Canopus using iMovie, the audio previews, captures, and plays back just fine.
Thanks again. Any additional info needed just let me know. I really appreciate it!

  • No audio when recording with isight

When I try to record anything with imovie 08 and the built-in isight camera, there is no sound. The video works fine, but no sound. The microphone works, I've used it in other programs, but it just won't work in imovie. Any ideas?

    Hello lgpuma13
If you have not quit and restarted iMovie, doing so may correct your problem. If not, restart your Mac and test again with no other AV apps running during the test. If neither restart helps, consider the following ideas.
I read your post to mean you have no sound when you playback your movie, not merely when you move the pointer back and forth (or “skim”) over the clips.
If the above is not your problem, check your Audio Adjustments for appropriate volume or other settings that might effect your level.

  • No audio when capturing on imovie

When i plug in my dv camera i go onto import on imovie and the clip plays and i can capture it but no sound is on the video on my computer? i have reinstalled imovie and it didnt work and restarted my imac, why isnt there any sound? it had sound once and i imported a clip with sound and now i get nothing? anyone know what it could be?

I've been trying to take movies I made with our Sony digital camera, exporting them through quicktime to iMovie, but in changing the movie to MPEG4 it loses its audio and in fact, when I go to convert the from MPEG1 to MPEG4, the info window tells me "no audio track in source movie."
Multiplexed compression formats like MPEG-1 are not conversion compatible with the QT structure. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) instead.

  • No audio when capturing with quicktime 10.2

Typically I use a Sony DSR-40 or my Canon XL2 as a source for miniDV tapes and Quicktime 10.4 to capture on my Mac Mini (late 2012) with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Recently, the video is capturing fine but usually, not always, there's no audio on the captured file.  While I'm importing, the QT audio meter is moving properly like it's monitoring the audio.
I thought about uninstalling and reinstalling QT but saw posts that say it's "a structure embedded in the in the platform's operating system. To remove/replace it, you would have to delete/reinstall the entire operating system."
I'm forced to use iMovie for capturing, not as good as QT used to be working for me.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thanks, you nailed it.  For some inexplicable reason, the audio source changed.  Didn't even know that option through the triangle was available.
And yes, know about screen capture, but I do that directly through my Mac with Ctl+Shift +3.  When David mentioned it, I thought he was somehow referring to the New Movie Recording I was doing with QT.
Cmd-Shift-3 snaps a picture of the (whole) screen (and Cmd-Shift-4 lets you select part of the screen).
QT  records what happens on the screen (or part of if) live as a movie - excellent for providing video instructions!

  • No Audio When Recording via FaceTime Camera

For whatever reason, if I record video via the built-in "FaceTime" camera on my MacBook Pro, I cannot get any audio with the clip. I know my MacBook will record audio as I've done so via GarageBand - so I know the built in mic works and will record audio, it simply won't do so in iMovie using the FaceTime camera.
    Any suggestions?
ETA: It appears that although I've not touched any of my sound preferences, somehow the audio output volume for the microphone was muted.

I don't know why you are not getting sound when recording directly into iMovie.  Is the sound working for other clips?
A workaround could be to record the video using Quicktime player then import the resulting file into iMovie.
    Geoff.

  • Is there a way to mute audio when capturing video?

I have the FCPX installed and want to background capture video without listening to the audio.  There was a small preview checkbox with the audio meteres in FCP 7.  Is there a similar option in FCPX?

Yea, that certainly works, but it doesn't let me do anything else that requires listening to audio.

  • CS4 crashes when capturing via ADVC-100

I have been successfully using CS4 to capture from my Canon HV20 camcorder.
Today I tried to capture old VHS video using a Canopus ADVC-100 analog to DV converter. This has always worked perfectly when I was using Premiere Pro 1.5.
With the ADVC-100 connected, as soon as I hit F5 to open the capture window, CS4 crashes with a blue screen and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I have tried capturing several times with the same result.
Is this a known bug and is there a workaround available.

wondering why you use the canopus any way. From the canon web site:
Analog Digital Image Converter: This function lets you feed the analog signal from your TV, VCR or analog camcorder to your HV20 to convert to digital for recording on DV tape. The HV20 can also be used as a signal converter by connecting it between an analog device and another digital device.
In other words, ditch the canopus.

  • Cannot hear audio when capturing video.

I'm an owner of a skate shop. I doing filming frequently, and just recently got my first Mac computer. I got FCE4 for capturing and editing my footage for a video that I'm working on. Just started using it today, have no idea how to get the audio to play WHILE I'm capturing the tape. It will play in the timeline after it's done capturing, but I'd like to be able to hear it (without plugging in headphones or speakers to the camera) while I'm capturing it. A friend told me it could possibly be an easy fix... any suggestions? Is it something as easy as checking or unchecking a box????

No easy fix as Tom relates.
Does your camera have a small built in speaker?
That will work if the volume is turned up.

  • Hearing the audio when Capturing video

You folks are the best. My new question deals with capturing video. I can only hear the audio if i go th the clip settings and check the audio box. I know there is a way to have that automaticly happen every time I capture. I am baffled. I have tried to find a way in all the set up things and can't. What have I done or what am I doing wrong? It did it in my other Mac, until I updated.
Do I have to check that box every time?
    Thanks, Jon Kessler
PS: i tried to find out about it in the manual but had no luck.

  • No audio when capturing

    Hi,
there is a problem trying to capture old vhs. I have vhs player connected to Multibridge Pro 2 (pal in) and audio to multibridge xlr using audio mixer. I can see a video in log and capture window and hear audio from my monitors, but I can't get an audio in FCP. I'm sure that audio signal is coming to computer, because in system preferences sound setup audio input section I see moving input level bar. What could be wrong?

  • Selecting microphone when capturing video from the webcam

    Using Final Cut Pro X
I want to capture video from my webcam into Final Cut.  I have a USB microphone (Yeti) with which I want to record the audio.  I cannot find an option to select my input source for audio when capturing this footage.  Final Cut seems to default to my microphone on my webcam, which causes echoing and noise. I can select the USB mic when doing a voiceover, but when I capture video I cannot find an option to select my input.  I've made my USB mic my default device in Sys Prefs, but that doesn't work.  Any other ideas?
    Options
    1.  Figure out how to change the default input for webcam capture in Final Cut
    OR
    2.  Use another program.  I've also tried to do the same in both QuickTime and iMovie, and they both capture audio only from the webcam as well.
Everything I've found online talks about voiceover.  I don't want that.  I want to capture video with it.
    Suggestions are appreciated.  Thank you.

Thanks.  Don't know why I didn't see it.  That arrow is pretty small.
I do still have an issue that I cannot figure out.  I'm using the same mic for webcam recording (now in QT thanks to Luis) and in Final Cut for voiceovers.  Though I'm still on the same Mic the sound is not the same.  It's close, but the sound on the voiceover sounds cleaner and clearer.  I'm sitting in the same spot speaking the same way, but the sound quality difference is noticable.  Not sure why.
It seems that the difference is in how each software deals with it.
It may be that QT is sampling audio differently from FCP X somehow, or using a different audio codec or whatever.
Just guessing, I really have no concrete knowledge.
Oh, wait: there are a few things that I can notice, after trying a small example: the QT audio is AAC at 44.1 KHz,
the FCP X is AIFF at 48KHz. Compression and sample rate are different.
