No audio when capturing with quicktime 10.2

Typically I use a Sony DSR-40 or my Canon XL2 as a source for miniDV tapes and Quicktime 10.4 to capture on my Mac Mini (late 2012) with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Recently, the video is capturing fine but usually, not always, there's no audio on the captured file.  While I'm importing, the QT audio meter is moving properly like it's monitoring the audio.
I thought about uninstalling and reinstalling QT but saw posts that say it's "a structure embedded in the in the platform's operating system. To remove/replace it, you would have to delete/reinstall the entire operating system."
I'm forced to use iMovie for capturing, not as good as QT used to be working for me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Thanks, you nailed it.  For some inexplicable reason, the audio source changed.  Didn't even know that option through the triangle was available.
And yes, know about screen capture, but I do that directly through my Mac with Ctl+Shift +3.  When David mentioned it, I thought he was somehow referring to the New Movie Recording I was doing with QT.
Cmd-Shift-3 snaps a picture of the (whole) screen (and Cmd-Shift-4 lets you select part of the screen).
QT  records what happens on the screen (or part of if) live as a movie - excellent for providing video instructions!

  • A way to adjust audio when capturing video?

I transfered some video/audio and am having distortion in some audio.
The original audio does not peak and when I captured it in Premiere CS6, it is not peaking out, but when I play back, I can hear occasional distortion. The video is up at:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNNgJiZMrRA
Does this sound like it is overmodulating or is something else happening?
Is there a way to adjust audio when capturing audio or is it a straight feed? Wondering if I can lower the audio input to try to fix.
thanks in advance for your help,
    Charlie

How are you capturing the content? Because in my experince premiere doesn't have a way to adjust the audio levels of what your capturing. However if you post how you are capturing the footage in more detail I might be able to help. Please tell me exactly how you have everything hooked up.
For example if you have the camera hooked straight to the computer or if you're using a capture card if so what kind. Some capture cards have audio gain settings which might be causing the issue. Also some decks and cameras have audio playback volume settings which can also cause audio to be sent to premiere louder than what it started as. So if you give more detail I may be able to offer some sort of help.
One thing you might try though to remove that distortion is too add a lowpass filter to the audio, and start off by setting the low pass filter to like 3000 and just adjust by 500 up or down from there until the distortion goes away. I've had to do this in the past with audio that's distorted before. (Although I haven't experinced the specific issue you're experincing before.) Although it will make the persons voice sound  muffled it will take most of the distortion out. Which getting rid  of distortion at the cost of making it sound somewhat muffled is a decent trade off if worse comes to worse and you can't get the issue figured out.

  • Capturing with QuickTime Pro?

I have much problems with capturing in FCE: missing frames, out of sync audio, one cassette ok - the second with problems.
Now I capture with QuickTime Pro and import in FCE.
    Is this procedure ok?

Excuse me, I forgot: several miniDV cassettes from two different cameras. The camera I use for capturing is yet another (Medion MD 9090) camera.
With iMovie there is no problem to capture but I have learned this is not the right way.
With QuickTime Pro there is also no problem, so I use it now.
Can there any problems using QTP for capturing instead of using FCE?

  • How to Mute audio when capturing

Does anyone know how to mute the audio when capturing HDV. The preview check box is only available when capturing dv. I'd like to be able to use the computer's sound for other things while capturing

Hi Ian, actually there is no "Preview" button in the HDV specific Log and Capture window (which is different from the normal Log and Capture window) so there is no way to mute the audio passthrough when capturing HDV.
Sabapp, asking for an update here is futile, you are talking only to other users. If you want to send feedback, report bugs, make feature requests etc then you should do so on the feedback page here:

  • No audio when capturing from vcr using canopus100

When I log and capture, the video is there, and the audio tracks "show up", however, the audio cannot be heard during capture (previewed), nor is it heard when I export the movie using QuickTime conversion.
I exported the file as a QT movie and played it back in QT, and of course, no audio.
Which switch have I not thrown here?
    Thanks
    JD

OK, I suppose it would help to know the details to provide a proper analysis of the situation.
    1) Canopus 100 is connected to vcr through the s-video input, and the audio is going in through the standard mini-jack interface.
    2) FCP Capture Settings are:
    Device Control: Non-Controllable Device
Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 KHz Copy
Scratch Disk Free Space = 852.3 GB
    3) The audio tracks "show up" when I do a capture...meaning, there are 2 tracks placed in the timeline. I can view some audio activity in the Waveform Monitor, but I do not actually hear any audio.
On that note, audio plays fine when capturing video from my Sony PD150.
Also, when using the same set up with the Canopus using iMovie, the audio previews, captures, and plays back just fine.
Thanks again. Any additional info needed just let me know. I really appreciate it!

  • Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

    Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
    (headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !

  • Error when exporting with Quicktime

I'm having some problems exporting with Quicktime from iMove '08. Here are my settings:
(The highlighted portion says 20,000 kbits/sec)
I have exported using these settings before, but for some reason, it gives me error code -2002 when it finishes exporting now, and tells me that it can't export. Anyone know what error code -2002 is? I can't find it here or on Google. Exporting straight to m4v worked just fine.

I'm exporting at those dimensions because that's just where I had it set (lol). I didn't even realize it was HD until just now, but like I said, I put the lowest possible data rate (32 kbits/sec) and the smallest dimensions possible (160x120) and it still didn't work.
However, I had completely missed the fact that the audio wasn't being exported. I reset the audio settings and tried again on the smallest setting, and that worked. Thanks for your help!

  • No audio when importing to Quicktime 7 Pro

I have looked for an answer in the forums but can't find one. I have an older MiniDV camcorder I am trying to get some video converted to digtal media. The videos play great when I watch them on the camcorder audio included.)I am using the firewire output and first tried iMovie (version 10.0.2) (I am on Mavericks). I was able to get video an sound but the video was so choppy it was just hard to watch, the audio with the video was OK, just choppy where the video kicked out. So I then downloaded Quicktime 7 and bought the Pro version and I was able to import the video with no choppiness at all but there was no audio. I have tried setting the microphone in the preferences to the camcorder and I have tired the different formats including raw but I still cannot get the audio to go with the video.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The reason I think this is worth trying... A G5 should have enough processor speed, but it lacks a graphics card that can offload the processor for some of the heavy lifting...therefore less resources available for audio.
Also, I would recommend that you create a duplicate of your project and cut it down to about 5 minutes or less (go to Project Library. Right-click on project name, and select Duplicate). Then you can test this without waiting 4-5 hours.

  • Audio Only Capture with IoHD - Problem

I'm trying to do an audio only capture in FCP 6.0.1 using our IoHD as the input device. The XLR cables are live and plugged into CHs 1&2 on the IoHD. I've setup an audio only capture preset in FCP but I can't get any levels from the box and the level meters on the AJA do not register anything either. Using a capture preset I made using the Macs internal audio I was able to capture just fine but so far no joy using the IoHD. Anyone run across this problem?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I'm having a similar problem, and would appreciate advice. I'm feeding analog audio into FCP 5.1.4 through my Multibridge Pro. I too have set up an Audio Only capture preset, and finally figured out how to get the sound coming through. I've selected "Non-controllable Device" in the Device Control menu. But as soon as I click on Capture "Now" the Capture window appears AS THOUGH it is capturing, with the message "press Escape to stop" but the audio is no long audible. And when I press Escape, no clip has been created. I have to close out of the Capture tool and open it again in order to hear the audio coming in and see the VU meters moving again. What's going on? Thanks.

  • IMovie crashes when sharing with Quicktime

I think I posted this in the wrong forum earlier. I am a novice, please forgive me.
I updated my iMovie program and now everytime I use it and try to share movies with Quicktime it closes unexpectedly. I can export the movie as a m4v file using "export movie", but I need for it to be a .mov file and I typically use "export using Quicktime". It worked flawlessly until I updated. Has anyone else had a problem with iMovie after updating it? Is there a way to revert back to the previous version? I have called Apple Support and the gentleman that helped me got it to do what I could get it to do, but could not get the movie to share using Quicktime. He said that all of the files are the same (?) and that I could just use the m4v. I am doing work at home for someone else and they need the .mov file. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I did see multi-pass checked when I was looking at the Compressor Quality. I thought about changing it also because I get about a quarter of the way through the process and then it closes on me.
    My sound settings are:
    Format: Linear PCM
    Channels: Stereo L R
    Rate: 44.100kHz
    Render Settings:
         Quality: Normal
    Linear PCM settings:
         Sample size 16

I am also expriencing the same error. Tried every solution listed so far:
    1. Switch off background rendering. Trash render files. Don't render. Export.
    2. copying the project within Final Cut Pro into another project
    3. remove the following folder: Library > Application Support > ProApps > MIO > RADPlugins > XDCAMFormat.RADPlug
Nothing worked. I try to export to Vimeo, YouTube, and master. All error right at 9%
    What's going on?

  • No Audio when iChating With PC User

I've looked on the forum, but can't seem to find this particular issue. I'm using ichat 3 with OS 10.4.2 and the person I'm trying to video conference with has a PC with Windows XP and a logictech camera. We both have the latest versions of the AIM software for our respective operating systems. Also, I'm using DSL while he's on a cable connection.
We can successfully open and sustain a video chat, but I can't hear him and only for about the first minute of the connection can he hear me before the audio cuts out. Neither one of us can figure what the problem is. I've contacted another Mac user I know with the same camera and software as myself to test my own camera and both the audio and video work fine when conferencing with him.
My only conclusion is that it's an issue from the PC side that he has to configure although I'm not sure what to tell him to adjust, or it's an issue with the AIM client that were using and for some reason the audio support just isn't there for the software. Anybody have anything that will make this work, or can at least explain what's going on??
    Thanks in advance!

    Ralph,
That could be adding to the problem. According to the link you sent me my up and down streams are 300 and above. My friend however is usually much lower, below 100 during video conferences. I thought that might be an issue, but in the past we've been able to get picture pretty easily and so I overlooked it. However, we went ahead and downloaded the "here" link you suggested to his PC and now the audio is very stable, but we have absolutely no video.
Considering he has a cable connection I'm surprised his bit rate is so slow, but I'm also aware that it's a community connection and that you're only as fast as the amount of traffic you're sharing it with. Also, I've been able to carry steady vc's with other Mac users even when my bit rate is in the low 100s and thier's is mid 100–200s, so I thought I was getting by okay.
In any case, outside of the bit rate issue, is there any other way to get this thing to work already?! I'm tired, hungry and my food is running out.

  • Problem with Audio when exporting to Quicktime

I'm running a trial of Adobe Flash CS5 on a Windows PC. I used audio [set to Stream] in the project. The original audio was recorded in 16 bit and 44kHz using Cubase LE4, and was exported in [.wav] format. It works fine and plays back normally when I try 'Test Scene' or 'Test Movie' within Flash. However, the export isn't working right.
I exported the movie into Quicktime format [.mov]. I set the export audio to 16 bit and 44kHz, which was the same rate that the original sound was recorded in. No matter which audio compression I use, [or without compression at all], the final Quicktime file sounds like it is 8 bit, and the quality is greatly reduced. Just to experiment, I tried exporting with 8 bit audio- at this setting the movie played back with even worse audio quality [and a considerable amount of static], and I am assuming that it has been reduced to 4 bit.
For some reason, Flash must be cutting the bit rate in half, no matter what settings I use. Does anyone know how to solve this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information on this issue is available in this article.

  • No audio when capturing on imovie

When i plug in my dv camera i go onto import on imovie and the clip plays and i can capture it but no sound is on the video on my computer? i have reinstalled imovie and it didnt work and restarted my imac, why isnt there any sound? it had sound once and i imported a clip with sound and now i get nothing? anyone know what it could be?

I've been trying to take movies I made with our Sony digital camera, exporting them through quicktime to iMovie, but in changing the movie to MPEG4 it loses its audio and in fact, when I go to convert the from MPEG1 to MPEG4, the info window tells me "no audio track in source movie."
Multiplexed compression formats like MPEG-1 are not conversion compatible with the QT structure. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) instead.
