No audio when connecting iMac to LED TV

I connected my iMac (using a mini display to DVI adapter) to my LED TV (using an HDMI to DVI Digital Video Cable), the picture appears but the only sound there is is that coming out of the iMac. Under system preferences their is only the internal speakers displayed in the output section. Please help!

When you connected the mini-display port to mini-dvi adapter, you lost any audio possible. dvi standard doesn't support audio. If your iMac is a early 2009 or earlier, it doesn't support audio over the mini-displayport. The late 2009 and mid 2010 iMacs support audio over the mini-displayport per this article:

Hope this doesn't confuse you too much.

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

Winston, you CAN sync without transferring the files to the Apple TV HDD.
That's not correct, although I now understand you.
Select Custom sync and choose not to transfer files.
As I say I realise what you are saying, but it is your library database file that is synced, your music is streamed.
It has worked in the past for me and it still works now, I can see all the albums on the Apple TV in 'My Music' only when I go to play a file: silence. Both on the television and on the stereo.
Have you by any chance turned the volume down on the tv.
And yes, there is a reason to disable sound output via HDMI, because there is no use to have two audio streams outputting at the same time.
Sorry I don't follow your reasoning here. We don't use the DVD player in the car, I haven't considered disabling it though.

How to turn off screen on Macbook Air when connected to Led monitor screen?

The only way you can turn it off is to close the lid - so you would need an external wired or wireless keyboard and mouse/trackpad attached.

It use to work then i tried tuning my tv using the controls as i lost my remote and now there is no audio. Audio is okay when a tv station is tuned, and the PC produces audio through external speakers. Is there a factory reset or what else could you advise please

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the Toshiba USA forum, so I don't have any information on it. You might want to check Toshiba in your region.

  • No audio when connected to stereo

My iPhone 5c on iOS8.1 will not play music when connected to the audio output from our stereo or iHome docking station.  My husband has the same phone and his plays fine.  The speakers on the phone work and I get sound though headphones.  I've tried powering off/on and resetting my phone.  Is there a setting that is preventing sound when connected to audio output cable?

It would be helpful to know how the HDMI cable is attached to your MacBook Pro cos my MBP C2D 17" has no HDMI connector.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to give us the complete setup you're using, then we may be able to offer some assistance.

  • No picture when connecting iMac to TV via S-Video

We have an '07ish iMac, and an older TV with only composite and S-video.
We've connected a mini-DVI to video adapter, an S-video cable, and an audio cable, switched the TV over to the correct video input, clicked 'detect displays', and tried every single resolution. We got a little blip of white on the TV screen when we plugged the mini-DVI port in, but other than that—black screen. (We did get the sound.)
Thinking maybe *just maybe* we'd get a different result using a composite cable instead, we tried that too. Still nuthin'.
After reading through some other posts on connecting Macs to TVs, we tried restarting the computer. Still nuthin'.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi eb
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Could be a bad Dynex adapter, return that one for another and/or cough up the extra $3 for Apples.
I'm now using a Mini-DVD to to DVI and a 21.5 LG monitor, but my Apple Mini-DVI to Video adapter and my 27" Sharp served me well for a couple of years.
See the Tip in > http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23844?
+Tip: To make sure that your iMac automatically detects the external display or projector, be sure you plug the adapter into the external display or projector before you plug it into the iMac.+

  • No audio when connecting 2009 White Macbook to Sony Bravia TV

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect my 2009 Macbook to my Sony Bravia TV but having problems with the audio.
I'm using a Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter to connect the Macbook with a VGA cable connected to the back of the TV in the PC location.
I'm trying to connect the audio from the Macbook to the TV using a two male 3.5 mm audio cable from the Mac's headphone jack to the audio port behind the TV under the VGA port.
But no sound is coming from the TV. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

OK, I feel a little foolish. I had to rerun AutoProgram to let it rescan the channels. I had tried that but gave up too soon. When it hadn't found any channels at all when it was about 60% done, I assumed it wouldn't find any. I finally had the patience to let it run and it found the channels.
Does anyone have a QAM channel lineup map for the Boston area?

  • Border of image lost when connecting iMac to TV

When I connect my 27" iMac to my Panasonic TV a portion of the image is lost on all four borders. How can I get the entire image to be viewable on the TV?
To connect the iMac to the TV I'm using a mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter and an HDMI cable with a DVI connector on one end.

My TV had its HD size set to 1, which turns overscan on, resulting in the loss of the edge. I changed HD size to 2 and now there is no loss.

  • HP Envy dv7 - No Audio When Connected to TV by HDMI Cable; Windows 8.1

I know this is one that has been floating around the forums for a while but I have not been able to find anything that works in my situation. When I connect my laptop to my TV (Panasonic Viera Plasma) via an HDMI cable, I can get the video to show on the TV fine but there is no audio on the TV; it comes out of the laptop. I have tried everything I can think of including deleting the drivers then reinstalling them, updating them, rolling them back, etc., etc., etc.
Here are the specs on my laptop:
    HP ENVY dv7 Notebook PC
    Windows 8.1 64-bit, 8GB RAM
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
Intel(R) Display Audio (with Beats Audio)
    IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Also, here is a snapshot of the Playback Devices:
As you can see, I have nothing which says "HDMI". I have gotten quite frustrated with not being able to get this to work. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.

This is one of the BIGGEST reasons why I would want to take my PC and chuck it into the nearest heavily traveled lane of traffic and watch it get completely destroyed by any vehicle that runs over it then go buy a MAC. The idiocy involved in doing such a simple task is revolting.
FIrstly, and in no way am I directing my ire at you specifically, I have already performed almost everything you have listed for me to try... PREVIOUS to me posting this cry for help.
Secondly, I included a screen shot of the sound devices in my first post and indicated that my display driver/device is  Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000. Beyond that, I don't know what you are looking for.
Thirdly, and most frustrating, the document you told me to "follow every single word of instruction" (which I have previously done) doesn't even tell me to connect the laptop to the TV. It talks about the different kinds of connections but never actually TELLS me to connect the laptop to the TV and WHEN to do it.
When I connected my laptop to my TV for the first time it never tried to load ANY drivers. HOWEVER, it does show "PANASONIC TV" (the brand of my TV) and the monitor type in the resolution dialog. But it also show no other type of monitor.
The biggest issue I can see is that there is NO DRIVER LISTED FOR THE HDTV AUDIO in the sound devices. Therefore how could it transmit audio via the HDMI cable since it doesn't seem to even recognize it?
I am at my wits end. And I have NO INTENTION OF PAYING SOMEONE TO MAKE THIS WORK!!!! There is NO reason why it should not work upon conection of the HDMI cable.
What the hell is wrong with HP (or any other PC manufacturer - and Microsoft, as well) when the simple task of connecting a laptop to a TV is so complex and convoluted. And, by the way, I am an electrical engineer with multiple degrees... And this doesn't make sense to me!!! For pity's sake, can someone please give me a simple solution to what should be a simple issue??!!

  • Macbook goes to sleep randomely when connected to Apple LED Display

I have  an issue with my Macbook Pro (2009 model) when it's connected to my 27' Apple LED Display. For no apparent reason that I can tell, it just goes to sleep at random, and after I wake it up by pressing a key (bluetooth keyboard), the mouse cursor looks messed up:
It might be a bit hard to tell from the blurry photo (I don't know of a way to take a screenshot with the cursor, so I used my iPhone), but it's too halves of the spinning beachball.
There's nothing in the console's log that indicates the reason for switching to sleep mode. It's also not the magnets of the Macbook pro used to detected when the lid is closed (I'm using the NoSleep utility that prevents that behavior). I've already tried resetting the PRAM. Also, this behavior never happens when the macbook isn't connected to the external display, so that probably aint a heating problem either (also the temperature readings are all in bounds).
Any help would be very appreciated, as that thing is driving me crazy.

    Jon,
Along the lines of my comment in your other thread. The battery connection cable between the logic board and the battery is also known as the "sleep/switch" connector. This little cable not only communicates battery power to & from the machine but also has a handle on regulating the machine's sleep process (and wake from sleep).
I've seen several MacBooks that have come across my work bench which are suffering from this exact issue you're describing and we're remedied by replacing that cable.
The component I'm referring to is this one-

  • TS2090 Poor/fluctuating audio when connected to an AV receiver.

I have an Apple TV (3rd gen) and I have it connected to my HDTV through my Yamaha AV receiver (model HTR-4065) using an HDMI cable. For some reason the audio coming through is very low and sometimes fluctuates up and down. Not sure what's causing this. When I disconnect it from the receiver and reconnect it directly to the TV with the same cable the audio comes in normally. I have my HDTV's audio output set to Dolby and have tried PCM but neither seem to correct the issue. My HDTV is a Vizio btw. Anyone else experiencing this issue and have you found any remedies?
    Thanks!

The Apple TV cannot be turned off except by physically pulling the plug. It can only be placed into standby. But this has nothing to do with your issue. Does your AVR have multiple HDMI inputs and a single output to your TV? You have to switch back to your cable box input. This is a function of your AVR. not the Apple TV.

  • I have a Airport Express I use primarily for AirPlay with my iPhone 4 (iOS6.1.3). Is there a way to set AirPlay as the default audio when connected to wifi?

At the moment, when I re-connect to wifi (come home), I must select AirPlay as the desired audio.
I know this is managble, but it would work a lot more easily if it was possible to select a default for AirPlay, or iPhone.

I would suggest that you perform a "soft" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) that you just got from eBay. This type of reset will temporarily (5 minutes) disable both the base station and wireless security passwords so that you can access it with the AIrPort Utility to make the necessary changes.

I have a preamp connected to the audio in/out jack on my macbook pro 13" 2012. when i plug the audio in from my preamp the sound only shows it as a headphone output and does not list it under input. i also have no button "use audio for:"

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.
