No Audio with clips

Hi all
I've just started playing with iMovie 8.
I imported some clips that I had stored. they are .mov and Quicktime call's them DV files. Quicktime plays them fine.
When I first started I just imported a couple and they played fine in iMovie too.. but now that I have imported about 15 hours worth of clips none of them are playing any audio.
Is anyone else having this problem or know the solution?
Cheers
Craig

Craig, you are describing almost the same thing happening to me. I posted this about three days ago and have had no responses. The problem started when I had 14 hours of video in a single event. I no longer have sound on any of those movies. However, if I go to the Finder and play the video from there then I hear the sound. It's an imovie issue. I need to call applecare, but they close so early its been hard for me to. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I tried deleting the cache and thumbnails for the event and have them recreated, but that didn't matter. If I move the videos to a different event the audio plays OK.

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.5 – How to Create Storyline with audio-only clips. I'm following exercises in Diana Weynand's Pro Training Series, and this function is greyed out. Trying to create crossfade transition. New Compound Clip can be activated however.

Chapter 7. Page 269. Exploring Audio Transitions. Selecting two audio clips, then control-clicking the clips. The dropdown menu to Create Storyline or (Command G) is greyed out. The function no longer seems to be available. I've found other functions that no longer apply with the latest version in relation to the book, and I assume that this is another one. But I'm trying to follow the book the best I can. I know there's a workaround. I can simply select an edit point and add the cross dissolve (Command T), but I wonder if this accomplishes the requested exercise from the book.

  • No audio with avchd clips

    Hi,
My video camera produces .mts files - avchd.
Wanting a good editor I downloaded a Trial version of Premiere Pro CC  , BUT no matter
what I tried - including many suggestions from on line users- could not get audio with any
of my clips.  Prelude was able to "ingest" the clips with audio BUT whenever I exported them to PP
    they were unrecognizable by PP.
Cannot seem to get any definite answer from any authority in Adobe. Is this problem insoluble?
I would like to buy into PP CC but not if it cannot handle the files my Panasonic camcorder produces
whats the point? Also transcoding .mts files into another format ( which works with PP ! ) reduces the
    quality and is not acceptable.
    Anybody know the answer?

Audio is at times the bane of the video editing side of things. There's been holy Hades raised here at times over the way PrPro does ... or really, doesn't ... handle "extended" audio channels as they would seem to be logically best handled. And the comments that some other programs handle X part of this easier. At which point there's oft a comment that yea, that be the case but that other program handles Y part of the audio process like a truly crashed turkey.
It seems to me the point is that perhaps none of the editing apps are where they should be for treating the audio part as seriously as the video. There've been comments and blogs from Adobe that this is why they have Audition, to handle all the audio stuff. But to many of us the way that Audition & PrPro work is not as "transparent" as we need it to be. Audition normally overwrites original files unless you purposely save-as. PrPro never over-writes original footage files. A few people have been caught by trying something in Audition ... without save-as-ing, and unfortunately without proper back-up, and ruined their audio. With no way back. Unfortunate, but in the differences in the two program's methodology, this is bound to happen at some time to almost anyone. "You should have known what you were doing before you did it" ... yea, true ... but in a hurry under deadlines, well ... baaaad things happen. Especially when one gets used to a HUGE "feature" of the Adobe video apps: non-destructive editing. Oh, sorry, Audition is a wee bit different. People need to know that!
And ... yea, setting up PrPro for 5.1 or 7.1 is entirely possible ... IF you know exactly what to set in preferences (which is not explained clearly for those who aren't already knowledgeable) AND how to move things about on your tracks in a sequence. So some of the experienced people feel it's not THAT hard a deal ... deal with it and move on. For noobs to the scheme of this, it can be completely un-penetrable.
Hope you get this nailed ... and there are some wonderful people around here that know those settings and when they do pop in can give so much help ...

  • Edit attached audio with movie clip

I made a project by combining movie from one camera (with audio muted), plus audio only from a second camera as an attached audio track. The two cameras were recording the same scene, so the (better quality) attached audio can be put in sync with the video from the other camera.
How then can I delete a section of the video AND the corresponding section from the attached audio channel, so the remaining audio remains in sync?
"Split Clip" splits the movie but not the attached audio. Is there a way round this?

Sorry I never posted back about this. I got sidetracked with putting together a different vacation video and forgot all about it.
Anyway, what I posted before totally worked. I exported the movie as an mp4 at full quality (I'm not sure if there was any loss of quality, as the footage I started with was not very high resolution. There was no discernible loss of quality, though). Then I took that newly created mp4 and re-imported it into iMovie.
iMovie treated the audio that had previously been pinned as embedded audio, so now when I cut a clip, it cuts the audio with it.
Kind of a pain to do the extra step (especially since importing all of my raw, unedited footage and re-importing it took a while, but working with it now is soooo much easier.
Hope this helps anyone who may stumble onto this thread in the future.

How can I keep my audio track, delete a short segment of video, and reinsert a new video clip, without changing the audio with the way it lines up with the original video?

If you have either iMovie 09 or iMovie 11 you can do this easily using the Cutaway feature.
Go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
Now you jut drag and drop the 2nd clip onto hte first clip at the frame where you want the Cutaway to start. A popup menu will appear. Choose Cutaway.
    Here is a good Tutorial.
If you have iMovie 08, let me know. There is a way to do it, but it is more complex.

  • Final Cut Express won't capture audio with the video anymore, why?

I have used Final Cut Express 4 for over a year now with no problems, but recently I am unable to capture any audio with the video from my camera. I can do it through iMovie no problem. I can't figure out if I changed a setting by accident because everything looks normal to me. Could another program be interfering with this? Quicktime Pro? I have no idea how to fix this.

First of all, we need a bunch of information in order to help. Please provide the specs of the footage and the sequence you are using. Also, are you using DV, HDV, or AVCHD? Do you hear audio when the clip is played in the viewer, or is there no audio at all once the clip is captured/ingested?

  • Dubbing Audio with ASUS P6T WS Pro motherboard ADI AD2000B Audio CODEC

I am trying to dub audio commentary into my clips using the SoundMAX program settings provided with the ASUS ADI AD2000B Audio Codec.  I have confirmed a microphone signal appears in SoundMAX and that PPro Audio Hardware Settings/Enable Devices has a check mark against 'Microphone(SoundMAX Integrated'.  The other unchecked device shown is 'Line In (SoundMAX Intergrated Di'.  When I set up the Audio Mixer with a mono Audio 4 channel, click the Audio 4 microphone icon to turn it on, turn off all other audio channels, click the record button, then speak into the microphone, no signal appears.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm that I am providing ASIO audio to PPro.  I need to know if I am wasting my time trying to dub audio with the present setup or I am missing something.  If no ASIO is possible using the present setup, what audio card do you recommend?

When you have your Mic input enabled in ASIO hardware setup, then in the audio mixer ou need to arm tracks with mic inputs then, then press the record button the input should be seen at this point. But to record you voice over onto time line you need to play the timeline. So that the targeted Audio Track will be recorded onto timeline. And after you stop playback you will se recorded audio.
    Good luck.

  • How to sync external audio to clips and KEEP them linked?

I have never been able to do this. Very simple...
    1. Shoot some video with a DSLR and...
    2. Record audio with external recorder, such as an H4N.
    3. Sync then in Premiere Pro (I have CS5)
    4. Keep those files associated with each other so that you do not have to keep them in your timeline at all times.
Unfortunately, this is a mystery to me. I'm always stuck with everything in my timeline or I will lose those now linked files.
Below is a video I shot of my computer screen and Premiere Pro so I can explain it visually.
Yes, there is likely an easy solution. But I haven't found it. Please note that I have CS5, no plans to upgrade and no money to do so.
    Thank you.

Provided that you are happy to lose the synch with the original audio of the clip, this can be done.
Right click on the original clip and select Unlink from the drop down menu.
Highlight the video and the new audio by clicking on both whilst holding down Shift, and R click.  Select Link in the drop-down menu.
If you want synch for both audio clips, then the only work-around that I have found is to duplicate the original video clip in a track which is turned off, so it does not show, and link the new audio to that.

  • Sync Music audio with Video Audio PE10

    Hi.
I am new to Premiere elements 10 (Changed from Corel to Adobe, so i'm not new to video editing, but I'm not used to PE10).
I am filming a lot of my daughters Circus performances, so very often I find the music number used at the performance and merge that with the video audio in the project.
But I have a problem syncing the music from the audio track on the video with the seperate music track.
So to specify: I want both Audio tracks running at the same time, so that I keep the clapping and the whisteling from the audience, but get the better quality of the music from the external file merged with the music in the video-audio-clip.
Is there a special tool or can someone help me with a special tecnique?
    Regards Settemand

Along with the instructions offered above, when nudging the Audio, I would make sure that Snap is OFF, as Snap will try to align your Audio with the beginning (Head), or end (Tail), of you Video Clips. That is useful for many editing operations, but for nudging Audio will frustrate you. The Snap function is a toggle with the S key. Just do not forget to turn it back ON, when done.
Also, though the Soundtrack Audio Track seems to be the ideal location for your extra music, some users have experienced issues, when using it, or the Narration Audio Track. While it seems that those issues are Project-specific, and those Tracks often work well, to keep from being tripped up later, I recommend putting your music on a free Audio Track, such as Audio 2 - just to be safe.
Also, with either an Audio, or Video Track, you can Zoom IN/OUT horizontally with the Timeline Zoom slider, AND can also Zoom IN/OUT vertically, by going to the Track's Header (where the Track Name is located), then hovering your cursor over the little line between the Track, until it changes to an equal sign with up/down arrows, then click+drag, to enlarge the Track (and the Clip display) vertically. I find that this makes viewing the Audio Waveform Display easier, and the peaks are more obvious. When done, you can just reverse that operation to Zoom OUT on the Track vertically, so that it looks like it did, before you started.
Good luck, and this FAQ Entry might be useful, though it talks about OOS (Out Of Sync) Audio, the functions are the same for syncing additional Audio: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/436751?tstart=0

  • Relinking Deleted Audio to Clips

Is there a way to relink deleted audio from clips that were unlinked from their audio tracks that were then deleted? so basically, if I have a clip, cut it and edit it, unlink the video and audio, delete the audio, and then later want to have the audio again. One way would be to drag in the clip, align it with the old clip, copy all edits and delete the old clip, but I have a lot of clips. I thought one option would be to open the .prproj file in a text editor and change it there, as this has saved me hours of work on other applications. Can't find any info though on the file structure, and I could spend the better part of 2 weeks hunting this one down. If anyone has a fix, I would very much appreciate it. And Alt-dragging the source clip from the bin onto the old clip does not bring in the audio.
    Thanks

There's no 'easy' way to do this.  That's why it's best to never delete the audio from clips.  Mute the track if you have to, but leave the clip in tact.

  • Slideshow Audio with video?

I'm in the slideshow mode (sliding panels) and I've included 3 video clips. These video clips were shot with NO AUDIO. However, Aperture fades out the master background song when the video clips appear. I don't want the song to fade.
The manual instructs me to go the the secondary audio file and adjust the clip, but there is no secondary audio to adjust.
    Any help will be appreciated.

You only get the extra volume settings with the Basic or Ken Burns themes. You must be using another theme besides those. I didn't realize this because when I tested it I was using the Basic theme but I just check all the other themes (besides Basic and Ken Burns) and those options are not available.
The easiest workaround I can think of is to not add the audio in Aperture. Export your slideshow and then open the resulting movie with Garage Band and add the audio there. Garage Band is able to export the movie with the added audio tracks without re-compressing the video. It takes a few extra steps but you actually get more control of the audio with Garage Band.

  • Syncing audio with video shot at 23.97fps

I recently shot a series of interviews on a Canon 7D. We shot the video at 23.98fps and recorded audio on a TASCAM DR-100, the audio format was 16bit interger 48kHz. I have tried syncing the audio and video in final cut, it starts out ok, but begins to lose sync with clips that last over a couple of minutes.
Is there a way to convert the audio files to remain synced throughout?
    Please help...

This may not be satisfactory but it usually works.
Assuming the audio and video clips are started on a clapper, find the exact length of your video clip. Write that down.
Open Speed Adjust on the audio clip and enter the time you wrote down. Render and then link.
If you do this for each clip in a separate sequence you can export the properly synced clips as self-contained media.
Hope you get it sorted, there is probably an easier and much more efficient way to do this. Back when I was shooting film, the speed of the tape deck sometimes drifted (because the producer was too cheap to get a crystal locked deck or Nagra). We'd spend many frustrating hours syncing by inserting cutaways and tiny chips of blank tape.

  • Replace guide audio with 5.1

I have an edited sequence with mono guide audio on a standard track , this guide is a separate audio file, not part of a video clip. I now want to replace this audio with a 5.1 master mix. This surround file is the same length and has the same timecode as the guide. I can replace footage and this brings in the new file but on the timeline there is only front left audio in the mono track. Any ideas on how to bring in all 6 tracks?

Maybe I had achieved it through Preferences with Audio Hardware and choosing my sound card in the Adobe Desktop Audio field.
I have it selected at default Premiere Pro WDM Sound right now.
I did have my sound card selected when I did my 5.1. Sorry can't remember how I got there and cannot experiment as I am mid project on another.
I will say though, by choosing my sound card in the Adobe Desktop Audio (sound card has ASIO) my rendering crashed, so therefor I do not have it selected.
Also, if you plan to output 5.1 to DVD through Encore, you will need a plug-in to go beyond stereo. And the 'plug-in' lost my endorsement due to 'no reply' from them.
I do see when I use the audio workspace and am in the audio track mixer, that I can select up to 32 channels for each audio track, but that doesn't help you. Before I could see the 5.1, with the .1 as the LFE.

  • Syncing External Audio with Video on iMovie

If syncing external audio with video on imovie, once successfully syncing the 2 is it possible to permanantly merge them so that I can continue trimming and rearranging clips without having to continue to re-sync the audio and video after every change I make?

In Final Cut Pro X, yes. In iMovie...no.
The workaround in iMovie is to sync your external audio to the video clip. Mute the audio on the video clip so all that is left is the good audio. Then use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie and under Options choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
Then save this clip in a place you can find it. Finally, import this new clip back into your event.

  • No Audio with Video File

When I import my recorded file .mp4, the file comes in with only the Video. However, When i contacted the Adobe support they informed me of using "New Sequence from clip" and by doing so it creates a new sequence and the audio is there.
But here lies the further issue, if i am working with numerous files, my project will have many sequences due to having to use "New Sequence from clip" for all files, but when i go to merge any sequences together, it acts like the raw file and does not import the audio with it, despite it being there in its original sequence.
Any idea how to fix this issue?

Make sure an audio track is selected for source patching.
