No auto-connect on start-up or restart (iMac)

Just an update on my problem. I too had problems with auto-connect to my network router after sleep, due to download of update 10.7.3. Worked with Apple Tech Support and local Apple Store to resolve problem - Tech Support representative and FAQ contributors alerted me to the availability of latest WIFI Update, which I downloaded and installed. Update DID resolve auto-connect problem for my system's "awake-from-sleep" mode, BUT it then began a SPORADIC no-connect problem upon startup and restart. I've reported this problem to the Tech Support representative, and she said she would alert the appropriate system teams of this problem.
I'm no software expert, but I believe the problem may be tied, in some way, to that part of the OS that triggers not only network card drivers, but also Bluetooth connectivity, clock activation, and any other sub-system icon displayed in the upper-right corner of the desktop. While I can manually connect to the network, and have the connection work without dropping, it will NOT connect automatically - sometimes - upon startup and restart. It WILL work automatically upon awaking from sleep. It tries to find the network signal during startup/restart, but doesn't always connect.
I'm thinking that if it was the drivers, themselves, for the network card that were, in some way, corrupt or incorrect, the system wouldn't connect at all ... (???)
Anyway, it's working a little better - but it's still not fully-operable; and I'm still looking for a permanent fix from Apple. I have a feeling that one of the reasons why Apple is bringing-out Mountain Lion so soon after Lion's advent is to possibly resolve some of the problems and "quirks" folks are having with Lion. I know I've experienced other little problems since upgrading to Lion that I'm simply living with, knowing that sooner or later, a fix will be forthcoming - either by patch, update, or a new OS ...
- Chris

Some additional input - Just received a call from "John", Apple Tech Support, asking me to do two things in an attempt to resolve my connectivity issues.
(1) Upon start-up, wait a minute or two to see if the network finally locks-in automatically, vice manually selecting the network connection. There may be some "priorities" being addressed via the OS wrt/ Bluetooth connections for the keyboard and mouse, that may prevent a faster lock-on by the network components. He says this sometimes manifests itself upon start-up and occasionally on restarts for some systems. It may be that, for some system configurations, Bluetooth components experience some minor interference from telephone systems or routers placed adjacent to these component locations - and since these components have "priority", system-wise, it may further delay network connectivity as well.
(2) Drag-out an old USB keyboard (and mouse), disable your Bluetooth access, and use them in place of the wireless keyboard and mouse to see if it results in a more-positive result for network connectivity upon start-up and restart.
Naturally, I'll give it a try, and see how it works. Told John I'd let him and Josie (another Apple Tech Support representative) know how it's working in a couple of weeks.
Really appreciated his call - very nice of him to follow-up. I'll let you-all know how it works ...

  • No connection after starting or restarting the system

    Hi,
    I have a problem.
There is no internet connection after start or restart.
Until last week there had been no problems. There was an automatic connection with my SPEEDTOUCH9FF4D8.
But suddenly it does not connect automaticly. I can select SPEEDTOUCH manualy and than it works...
    Thank you for your answers.

Hi im slightly confused by your post whether its the computer not connecting to the network automatically or whether there is no internet connection to the router at all but heres a few things to try anyway!
First of all, if the internet goes down and restarting the router doesn't solve, then unplug your cable modem for at least 5 mins, the cable modem needs to forget the MAC address of the previously plugged in device. Then start it up and when the ready lights are on the router (or about a minute after starting the router) then plug in the router and the connection should work!
Secondly, if your computer doesn't automatically connect to the network anymore (presumably your on mac osx) then go to System Preferences / Network then select configure AirPort. Make sure 'By Default, join' is Automatic, then go to options at the bottom and select 'Automatically Join and Open Network'
    Hope this helps!

  • Since the last update my HTC DNA doesn't auto-connect with SYNC anymore.  I have tried unpairing and repairing and restarting my phone.  I can still connect manually but I cannot locate a setting to turn on the auto-connect.

How do I enable the auto-connect to SYNC in my Ford Escape again?

        Hello Me29.

  • MacBook no longer auto-connects to network after 10.4.8

I have a MacBook and use Airport to connect to my wireless router. It always used to auto-connect to my router upon booting up. Now that I've installed the 10.4.8 update, it no longer connects automatically. I have to click on the Airport icon on the toolbar and select my network; only then will it connect.
I have already read this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
and followed its directions, but it did not solve the problem.
(Incidentally, I do not use WPA2, just WPA Personal.)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    From http://www.macsonly.com/ , today
    not tested :
After we tested the latest Mac OS X update, v10.4.8, on our 2.33GHz 24" iMac Core 2 Duo, we added another user account for the long-term tester. But after a restart or cold start, the iMac would reconnect to our AirPort network but it would get assigned an internal IP address rather than one from our router so it would not connect to the internet.
This problem could be temporarily solved by using the AirPort menu icon to turn off and then turn back on the AirPort card. This was frustrating because the original user account on our iMac continued to connect automatically to the network and internet after a restart or sleep as did all of our other Macs upgraded to 10.4.8.
We tried everything listed by Apple in its technical support articles (e.g. Article Number 304482) and provided on other Web sites, including deleting the preferred network in the System Preferences Network pane and re-adding it. We even tried deleting every AirPort-related preference ".plist" file including the "Networkinterface.plist" as recommended on another Web site yesterday. Nothing worked.
Then we tried a variation on Apple's suggestion and it worked. Here are the steps:
Open System Preferences, select the Network pane and select AirPort in the "Show:" popup menu.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Preferred networks."
Delete the listed preferred networks using the "-" button but this time we did not add it back again with the "+" button as Apple recommends.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Automatic."
    Restart.
Manually rejoin the AirPort network using the AirPort menu icon, i.e. selecting the network (or selecting "Other" and typing in the network name if hidden) and typing in the WPA (or WEP) password.
Now every time we restart our iMac, it automatically connects again to the AirPort network and gets an IP address assigned by the router so that it also connects to the internet. [Bill Fox]

  • Start-up vs Restart

My previous posts have described my continuing problems with OS X Lion.  Three trips to the Genius Bar and an installation of 10.7.4 has not corrected these problems.
When I start up my iMac, the start-up is slow, sound is competely disabled and Safari has graphical distortion.  However, when I restart, all the problems disappear.
So my question is, "What is the difference between start-up and restart?"  Something is happening, or not happening, in a cold start-up that seems to correct itself in a restart.
I appreciate all responses, but please be as non-technical as possible.
    Thank you.

Here is the complete Console page after a cold start-up that results in the same problems:

  • [SOLVED] problem in making a daemon for network auto-connection

I want to make a daemon that when I start my computer and my router is not already available, to auto connect to my router when it becomes available later without rebooting
So I thought in making a script and running it as a daemon which will hopefully solve my problems. The thing is I'm having a hard time isolating only the routers ip address. Here's how I thought the script should look like
    #!/bin/sh
    anet="$(ifconfig | awk "/router_address/{print $field}")"
    if [ $anet = "router_address" ]
    then
    /etc/rc.d/network restart
    fi
But although awk isolates the line with my router address it doesn't recognizes any field. Any value I assume to $field doesn't isolates anything so I could guess the right field (or fields) for the router's ip address.

thx a bunch, all I needed was ifplugd daemon. That script I thought about was a bad idea anyway 'cause continuous starting or restarting your network can't be good so I had to work more on it while ifplugd made everything happen clean and easily.

  • Problems auto-connecting after sleep & startup (Changed from WPA to WEP)

Okay, I know there have been several issues similar to this, but after two days of sifting through posts, I still can't resolve this.
A few days ago I switched my AirPort network security from WPA to WEP-128. This was required to allow my Nintendo DS to connect to the netwrok, by the way. After the change, two similar, but slightly different problems started:
My 15" PowerBook G4 no longer auto-connects to the network at startup. The network is listed in the drop-down, and connects with no problem when I choose it manually. The computer seems to have no problem re-connecting after waking from sleep, which is odd because...
My other PowerBook, a 12" G4, won't auto-connect at startup AND won't re-connect after sleep. As above, it has no problem connecting using the Keychain once the network is selected from the drop-down.
So far I have tried, on both machines:
    - trashing the system airport prefs
    - deleting and resetting the network's keychain entry
    - repairing the keychain (no errors found)
    - turning off some unneeded power mgt options
    - disconnecting USB peripherals
I have also reloaded the software on both my AirPort Extreme base and my AirPort Express hub, as well as restarting both hubs. I've also made sure that AirPort is at the top of the network connection list.
Both laptops are running 10.4.3 and have all the latest software updates installed.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

Both of these replies are helpful, in that they help confirm something I figured out this morning, almost accidentally.
One thing I didn't mention was that during the change from WPA to WEP I changed the network password. Now, I assumed that since the Keychain seemed to be working and I could get on the network manually without needing to enter the password each time, that meant the new password had correctly propagated throughout the system.
So, this morning I go into the Network settings, switch from Automatic to Preferred, select my network, look at the properties, and notice that somehow it has way too many bullets for that to be the correct password. I re-entered the password and that seems to have solved the problem. The new password I had entered somehow didn't make it into this setting. I guess trashing the network prefs, or renaming the network would have had the same effect.

  • Macbook Pro no longer auto-connects to preferred network

    The title says it.
While my computer connects automatically to some (maybe all but one) of my preferred networks, it now does not connect, annoyingly, to the one I use the most often (let's call it NET).
I've triple checked that it's preferred and should connect automatically, and the computer remembers the password, so that if I manually select NET, it connects no problem. But:
    a) It won't auto-connect to NET, and
    b) If I turn my computer on, when it presents the list of networks to me, I have to wait for it to reload the list, cause if I click on NET originally, it doesn't connect, and I have to refresh the list and try again.
    c) Figured that might mean that it's just taking longer to load the networks and is showing me a list before it's actually picked up on the networks, but waiting forever doesn't make it autoconnect; it just refreshes the list.
Any ideas? This is a huge pain.

No idea. You could try deleting the file
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    ... and restart your Mac.
To find that file quickly, select the above path (triple-click the line), control-click to bring up the contextual menu, and select Services > Reveal. Drag that file to the Desktop, or directly to the Trash.
This will completely erase your AirPort network preferences, requiring that you select your Wi-Fi network and authenticate again.
What OS X version are you using, and are you using an Apple AirPort Base Station, or a third party product?

  • Airport card not auto-connecting after adding WPA on router

    Hello;
I recently turned on WPA security on my previoiusly unsecure router (I had been using a MAC filter) and set up a password, etc...
Two laptops connect to this, my iBook G4 (powerPC), and a Sony Vaio. The Vaio remembers the password on reboot, but the iBook keeps forgetting it, as if somewhere it has the old settings still stored away...
Everytime I reboot I have to go into system preferences, network, and do a 'diagnotistics' to get it to find it, and add the password by going through 'closed networks' (otherwise it just tells me it failed to connect and never asks for a password).
Is there some way I can get it to remember the settings across reboots?
Where are the preferences stored so I can remove them and 'start over'?

Deleting the keychain with Keychain access worked.
I still can't click on options nor see preferred networks, but now the new keychain I made is finally staying around after reboot and auto connecting me to my home network.
Thank you for the help. I did accidentally delete ALL my keychains, but that's just as well as I probably had other clutter in there as well.

  • Bluetooth mouse is not connected after reboot or bluez restart

I followed all possible guides to make my Apple MagicMouse. I saw on the forums that the key is to mark it as "trusted". I did it in bluetoothctl and put it to "trusts" file in /var/lib/bluetooth/xx:xx..../.
It works fine if I connect it manually but after restart I see only messages like this in bluetoothctl:
    [NEW] Device 84:38:35:24:08:D9 MagicMouse
    [CHG] Device 84:38:35:24:08:D9 Class: 0x002580

    [CHG] Device 84:38:35:24:08:D9 Connected: no
    [ DEL] Device 84:38:35:24:08:D9 MagicMouse
Messages are printed when I click a mouse button. There is a small delay between "Connected: yes" and "Connected: no" and during this time I see a bluetooth sign in the notification area (I have Gnome).
Sometimes I see a paring request from the mouse. Sometimes authorisation request and if I go to the bluetooth settings it even propose to type a PIN code on the mouse )
Regardless my action after restart of bluez I am at the starting point.

I mentioned that, because this "solution" used to work for me on previous similar problems. After these steps the mouse used to autoconnect again after reboots and wakeups. Then after some weeks the problem appeared again.
Now this also doesnt work anymore. Now, everytime the mouse is disconnected, I have to push  connect-button on the mouse and then manually initiate the connect process from the notebook (KDE: bluetooth applet -> Mouse -> Connect). It is not enough to just turn on the mouse.

  • Bluetooth Speaker auto-connect

So I'm running 10.10.2 on a mid 2012 model macbook pro. I often like to use my bluetooth speakers as an output device (it is also a radio, alarm, cd player, etc in one) so it remains in a "sleep mode" however in this state it means my macbook auto connects to the speakers, while its not a major issue it can be annoying because some games refuse to output sound if the output device changes while it is open (namely Rouge legacy off steam) which means it connecting while I have my headphones on is a bit of an inconvenience.
There is a simple solution of turning off my bluetooth but as I don't use the macbook screen, keyboard or mouse at my desk, instead using a better monitor, etc. And a bluetooth mouse. I'm not afraid to poke around in terminal to stop it defaulting, I only want to connect when I specially specify it.
    thanks.

    Hi,
Untill now, there is no effective method in Windows to disable Bluetooth device connect automaticlly. Here is another workaround method maybe helpful.
That's using net stop/start service command to disable Bluetooth service.
Firstly, you can access Services by typing services.msc
command in RUN. Then choose Bluetooth service and change its startup type to
    Manual.
Next time when you need using Bluetooth, just run net start bthserv in Command Prompt with administrator.
The bluetooth should be work normally.
When you didn't want to use it, just run net stop bthserv command to stop it.

  • Brand new Ipad not auto connecting on wifi network

I've read the old posts. I've adjusted the brightness and turned off auto brightness. I've changed my dhcp proxy to auto.
Same as everyone else, my macbook, ibook and iphones all connect to the network and access internet with NO PROBLEMS.
The Ipad will join the network, but will not access online content. Always times out.
This just started happening on day 2.
We all know this began back in early April.
I'm running a brand new Buffalo Nfiniti router with updated firmware. Again, every other apple device works just fine.

got this from the stickied FAQ.
iPad stopped auto connecting 5 minutes after non use. Then I tried this and it worked. Guess I have to do this every freaking time I want to use the net.

  • After Ana WLAN not auto connecting

After I upgraded to Anna (N8/Slovenia) a lot of Nokia applications can not connect to the Internet automatically anymore.
My setup for "Data use in home country" is Always ask (or WLAN only) as I don't have any data plans with my provider. Also I set WLAN scanning to OFF. Then I try to access internet with Nokia browser and I get "Unable to connect" error. The same goes for Ovi Store, Here and Now, Ovi Daily App and some other Nokia applications. The only way to get it working is if I manually connect to the WLAN before using those applications.
At the same time other applications work as expected, for example I can browse internet with Opera Mini, connect with Skype, Fring, Sports Tracker, Exchanger and others. They ask me to connect to the WLAN or  when starting up.
Before the upgrade all this worked.

Mine is the same...... No auto connect to wlan, I have to connect manual first.
Also I cannot connect via any of my data plan settings !!! Im not a happy man
Is there a fix for this ??    Please help
