No auto-connect to WLAN with hidden SSID

I work in Infrastructure Services at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory.
Across IBM, there is a standard setup for wireless LAN access. There’s a public WLAN that provides access only to the internet; and there’s a private WLAN that provides access to both the internet and the corporate intranet. The private WLAN requires authentication via WPA/WPA2 Enterprise using LEAP or a certificate, and has a hidden SSID.
Both WLANs are served by the same access points.
The iPhone and iPod Touch do not automatically reconnect to the private WLAN with the hidden SSID.
Each time the iPhone wakes from sleep, the user must connect manually to the private WLAN. The user must go into Settings and then Wi-Fi, wait for the private WLAN to appear in the list (there’s always a delay) and then tap on it. Also, if one opens Mail or Safari application before connecting manually, the the blue pop-up list of available networks will not include the private WLAN with the hidden SSID.
This is a major inconvenience, because it adds half a minute or more to each operation that requires network access. Checking one’s email—something that should normally take no more than ten seconds—instead takes a minute or more, depending on how quickly one manages to connect.
This bug also results in needless expense, because network operations that should go over the local WLAN often go instead over the mobile phone network.
The inability of the iPhone/iPod Touch to reconnect automatically to networks with hidden SSID has been a problem since the original iPhone came out.
This problem is an obstacle preventing wider adoption of the iPhone within IBM.

Anyone have an update on this ?

IPOD touch OS 3.1.2 can't connect to wifi with hidden SSID

This isn't so much a question, rather than a complaint. It seems like other people have the same issue. I have a Linksys router configured with hidden SSID and encryption. My newly purchased iTouch can't re-connect to it after I cycled the wifi settings (or cycle the power). I have about a dozen other wifi enabled devices, some as old as 5 years, that have no problem reconnecting to the hidden network. I find it unbelieveable that this fancy new OS can't support something as common as hidden SSIDs. Now I have no choice but to broadcast the SSID which is not something that I wanted to do. I hope Apple will fix this eventually.

I think I may have figured out part of the rhyme, but the reason is still bewildering. Nobody is stating the router they are using. I figured out a clue to this. I was using the D-Link DIR-825 router with iPhone os 3.1.2 and had no trouble at all with my hidden SSID. Two weeks ago I purchased the Linksys WRT610N, and the iPhone will no longer automatically connect to the router unless I enable broadcast SSID. So why did the iPhone connect to D-Link and not Linksys automatically? There's got to be a difference in the way these companies are treating hidden SSID. The iPhone and iPod Touch will recognize one and not the other. Now it makes a little more sense as to why some people are ok and others not.
What's more peculiar is that my laptop and wireless bridge both work fine with the hidden SSID from both routers. It's only the iPhone that is being finicky.

Access Connections - Many APs with same SSID (Again)

I have a W520 running Access Connections 6.11 (release December 2013) on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Access Connections is still broken in regards to dealing with multiple Access Ponts having the same SSID. It keeps hoping from one access point to another regardless of signal strength of the AP.
The most desirable strategy would be if Access Connections would find and lock on to the best signal strength AP and stay there. However, it doesn't do that. It acts almost randomly. It also keep shifting around. The rate is almost random as well. Sometimes it will stay locked on to an AP for up to 10 minutes, at other times it shifts in as little as 30 seconds.
Other laptops, from other manufacturers like HP, Toshiba, and Apple do NOT exhibit this behavior on our campus. Other Lenovo machines running Access Connections DO exhibit this behavior. The problem is NOT machine specific (ie, not hardware or some weird idiosyncracy of the particular W520 i'm posting about). The problem is Lenovo's Access Connections. The problem is also not a configuration issue with the campus. I have a network at home running Airport Extremes all having the same SSID's and the W520 in question does exactly the same behavior there. Totally different hardware at home vs campus and same behavior. I cannot change the names of the AP as a fix. This is not a capability in the configuration of the AP's. Even if it were, I shouldn't have to do it. Campuses are often configured in this way. Campuses that are large commercial users who I believe are the most lucrative Lenovo customers.
This problem has been going on for literally years with different versions of Access Connections. Here are two threads in the Lenovo Community I found in under 30 seconds. Neither was solved correctly. In other words, Lenovo never fixed the software, and people had to either give up or resort to kludge solutions in their campus configurations.

Lenovo has actually made the problem progressively worse over time instead of fixing it. They have done this by removing the abilty to prioritize AP's by MAC address. Initially, Lenovo allowed you to configure 5 MAC addresses in order. Then, Lenovo removed that capability making it possible to only give a single MAC address as preferred. Finally, in recent iterations, Lenovo removed that capability alltogether. The box is still there in the UI, but it's greyed out. It is very frustrating to have this kind of thing happen. The prioritize capability is fundamentally a kludge, but at least it's something to give a bit of a workaround. Now we don't even have that.
Can a lenovo engineer please look at this issue and give me a timeline for resolution?
BTW, It is still not possible to configure Access Connections with a blank SSID either. I bring this up, because if you're going to fix the Access Connections code for multiple SSID's, you should be aware of the blank SSID problem as well. I imagine they are both in the same part of the Access Connections codebase, at least from a logical standpoint.

I found that there is a setting in the Intel driver (15.9.1.2, released 8/22/2013) for the wireless card (Centrino Advanced-N 6205). The setting adjusts the "roaming aggressiveness". I can only guess this means how often the driver goes out and tries to find a "better" signal and/or bandwidth. The card supports a/b/g so the calculus is complex as to what constitutes "better", and I have no idea how sophisticated the algorithm the driver uses is.
That said, if I set the "aggressiveness" to the most aggressive setting, things work somewhat better. They are still not as a good as other wifi managers bundled with competing products (specifically HP, Toshiba, and Apple so far), but it helps. It does appear that more of the time now, the AP having the best signal appears to be the AP the laptop is attached to.
Lenovo, please consider that forcing your customers to dig around in arcane driver settings and relying on the whims of driver writers and hardware companies to do things correctly and well, is a recipe for failure. Your customers are just going to get annoyed and say to their colleagues, "My old Toshiba seemed to do a better job of WiFi connections. I think next time, I'm going to have IT get me one of those again." And, of course, that colleague will look a lot harder at buying the Toshiba instead of the Lenovo, as well. Wifi connectivity is a very big deal for people who have to move around - and lets not forget, this is a laptop we're talking about, which is explicitly designed to, well, be moved around.
I apologize for being so pedantic, but it often takes such measures to get managers in these companies who control programmer time, to take these issues seriously and allocate the programmer resources to fix these problems.
The problem I am having is still not considered "fixed." I would very much like to hear any other solutions that work better. I would love to hear from Lenovo on the matter. Still waiting.

Connection problem with hidden SSID

At my work they have several Cisco Aironet 1200 Access points (AP). The AP have two SSID's. One SSID is visible and the other SSID is hidden. Both are secured with WPA TK-IP. Both work fine on laptops etc. I must use the second hidden SSID to connect to the internet.
I have successfully installed/configured the hidden SSID on my iPhone 3G but it is an half working solution.
Every time i want to use Wifi (hidden SSID), the iPhone 3G only uses 3G for internet.
Only when I go to Settings on the iPhone 3G, --> Wifi and wait a few secs the hidden SSID is visible and the iPhone connects perfectly. Then I press the home-button and I can use for example Safari or Mail over Wifi.
When I put the iPhone 3G to sleep en lets say use the iPhone 10 minutes later I only can use 3G for internet. No Wifi is visible.
In other means, the iPhone don't start the hidden SSID Wifi connection by itself
The only way to work with the hidden SSID is going true settings, --> Wifi. Then the iPhone 3G finds the hidden SSID directly. Then when the iPhone stays on i can use WiFi (with the hidden SSID).
Is there an solution so that the iPhone 3G automatic connects tot the hidden SSID when I use the iPhone?
(I have erased the network settings via Setup. This don't solve the problem. Have iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2, problem also with firmware 2.1)

Have you tried it with other hidden wifi networks (if possible)? Does it properly auto-connect to visible wifi nets? I have 2 wifi nets configured on my iPhone, one hidden and the other not. The iphone remembers both and automatically connects as soon as I walk close enough.
My 2 networks are configured with WPA2, MAC filtering, and reserved IP addresses for each device (no IP renewals).
I don't know specifically how the iPhone works but maybe it's trying to remember a previous IP and its causing a conflict because the work wifi is using DHCP. I also heard MAC filters on routers/switches can cause problems (though mine doesn't). I'd suggest asking some IT guys at your workplace how their security set up.

Regression in wifi support from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 with hidden SSID wifi nets

In 1.0.2 and earlier versions, I was able to configure my wifi connections by entering the SSID of my hidden office network and when I was in range it would automatically connect.
Starting in 1.1.1 whenever the phone sleeps or when I go out of range, it loses its memory of this network and I have to re-enter it. Boy is that annoying.
The network in question has a hidden SSID, and uses WPA2 encryption with a PSK.
Other iPhone users in my office experience the same behavior with 1.1.1.
Apple folks, please fix this regression in 1.1.2!

I am experiencing the same problem after upgrading to 1.1.1.
My home network is a little different, no wireless security enabled (open) but the SSID is still hidden (not broadcast).
After waking from sleep, my iPhone will not automatically reconnect to my network when it is in range. The weird thing is, I can go to the Wi-Fi Settings page and eventually my hidden network will show up on the list, but it doesn't automatically connect to it. I just have to tap it and it'll reconnect, but it's still annoying that I have to do that.
Makes the user experience when showing others my new cool toy less than desirable and maybe even a black-eye for Apple's usability.

Wifi Protected Setup with Hidden SSID?

I really need to know how to use WPS with a hidden SSID, if I set my network SSID to be public, and try to connect like that it gives me the option to use WPS and everything works fine, and the I hide my SSID again. However I find it to be a hassle to have
to always enable SSID broadcast.
Is there anyway to use WPS with a Hidden SSID in Windows 7?

To connect to a network where the SSID is hidden, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection
or network > Manually Connect to a Wireless Network > Next. Type in the Network Name (SSID), select the Security Type and type in the Security key.
You also want to tick ‘Start this connection automatically’ and ‘Connect even if the network is not broadcasting‘ > Next. Subsequent
connections will be automatic.

TC drops wifi connection with hidden SSID on restart/logout?

All in all I'm new to the Mac family as of January and have only one complaint...holds true to the Airport functionality in Leopard. I experienced the Airport/2Wire DSL gateway dropping wifi signal I found plenty of on the support forums.
I figured buying the TC would solve the problem yet it still is a problem if I hide the SSID? My XP PC connects fine whether hidden or broadcast, in fact I had an easier time connecting and using TC via my work PC then with my MBP? I see and connect via wifi no problems in XP parallels or my work PC, hard drive connects as well. Yet as soon as I hide the SSID after I get my MBP connected, when I logout or restart I can not find or even search for the network. I have to enable/broadcast again to get the MBP to connect. Once I hide it I'm still good until I restart or logout of any of the accounts?

A soft reset may resolve your WiFi connectivity concerns. Please remove the battery from your phone while is ON. Re-insert battery after 10 seconds. Power phone ON and allow it to register applications.

How to connect to wlan with n97 using ca certifica...

Hi all I have been trying to get my wireless working on my N97 at work which uses WPA/WPA2 and after a week and lots configuration changes I finally got it working, So I thougt I will share this
Since my work WLAN uses EAP-PEAP I needed the root ca certificate which i got from my network team.
So the first thing I did was send the cert to my phone and saved it
   To do this I sent the cert to my phone eg E:downloads folder
   I then went to file manger and found the cert under E:download folder
   I doubled clicked the folder and was promted to save which I did
   The cert will be installed under Setting-->Phone-->Phone Mangement-->Security     Settings-->Certf mangement -->Authority certificate
Next you need to setup a new access point to do this i did:
go to Settings-->Connectivity-->Destinations-->Access point(add new)
you will then be promted to auto check to available access points which you will click yes
select the wlan you like to connect to and select internet
After doing the above go to Settings-->Connectivity-->Destinations-->Internet-->your wireless network ....open this to edit
Connection name -- leave defautl
Data bearer --leave default
Wlan Network name -- leave default
Network status -- leave default
Wlan network mode --leave default
WLAN security mode -- WPA/WPA2

the only thing to change is WLAN security setting to do this

Hi guys, got some problems with my n97 and the eduroam eap-peap with mschap v2.
so we got this thing new in university, and i'm not able to connect to it.
all the iphone/windows guys just connect to the wlanpoint, accept the certificate, enter their userdata (without a realm ..) and its on. as we all know, its not that easy with symbian (and android) mobiles.
I allways find the eduroam with full signal strength, and add an accesspoint with the right settings.
I searched about an hour and i am sure i got the right settings.

So i can't connect to it, i try to connect to it and after a while it wants me to put my username and passwort in it (when i use prompt password yes of course). i enter it, enter the password. after a while it asks me a second time.. after i do it again it says
EAP-PEAP Authentification failed
For me, as a technical interested guy, it seems to me, that the logininformation is not correct or not transfered correctly. Why else should it ask me a second time to input it.
But i tried all possibilities, even with other domains ... other possibility, that my account is banned is not possible because i tried it with an other one an it didnt work too.
I dont have a clue why this doesnt work.. as said before, i really tried every username possibility (leave it blank, with domain, without...)

Unable to connect to WLAN with Nokia N95

Hi
Just bought a nokia N95 and I'm unable to connect to the WLAN at my work place. No problem connecting to my home WLAN, and there are no problems connecting my laptop to the workplace WLAN.
I browse for WLANs and select "Start web browsing", the wlan name comes up find and I select it, but after quite some time I get: "Internet: server not found".
I've read the other posts about assigning a static IP, but the sysadms here will kill me if I try that. Is there another way of getting this to work? It can't be true that the N95 is so picky with WLAN configurations?

E61i - will not auto-connect to WLAN for SIP

Although my SIP client is set to "always on," the phone will not connect to a WLAN network. If I go into the SIP profile settings, change it to "as needed," then change it back, the phone will prompt me and connect.
Does everyone else's E61i behave this way? I don't have a sim card in the phone right now... do you think that could be it?
I have my Gizmo Project account set up and have made and received calls successfully, even with my Grandcentral account.

Satellite Pro M70: Cannot connect to WLan with ConfigFree

Hi in Forum.
I'm having trouble with a Satelite Pro M70, concerning gaining control of wireless conections.
When scanning with "The Radar" i ConfigFree for available wireless accesspoints, I get several points available, but is not able to connect to a single one of them. I can read their status and see their WEP encryption marker.
When I try to connect to any one of them, I get a pop up dialog box, which says (translated from danish) "Another suppliers software is in control of the wireless adapter". When trying to set up a connection through the classic windows way, windows states that "windows is not able to configure this wireless connection - if you have another program to administrate wireless connections you must use this". I suppose it refers to ConfigFree...?
Is the unnamed "other supplier" Windows related or maybe McAfee related (Security Suite 2007)?
If you're familiar with this problem or something like it I would be please to know.
By the way - where do I enter WEP encryption keys for my friends WLAN routers in ConfigFree?

It must be not a ConfigFree. Depending on you WLan card an Intel ProSet utility or a Atheros Client utility could controls the Wlan configuration!
Please check if one of the both tools controls the wlan and disable the function!

You should have three different tabs in the Configfree utility.
The second one Device settigns provides device list and there you should find Wireless network connection.
Choose it and use the button Network connections.
There you should find some encryption settings!
Please check also the Profile settings tab and the option called Security settings

Auto size columns but with hidden columns

I want to hide some columns for interal use with the following statements:
jTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(i).setMaxWidth(0);
jTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(i).setMinWidth(0);
jTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(i).setPreferredWidth(0);
Now I find that the widths of hidden columns become not zero.
But I still want to auto-size the columns, so I add
setAutoResizeMode(JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_ALL_COLUMNS);
Then I find that the widths of hidden columns become not zero.
Could anyone tell me how to auto size the columns while keeping the hidden columns with zero widths?

If you want to hide columns then remove them from the TableColumnModel. The data is not removed, the columns are just not painted. Here is an example:

Can't connect to WLAN with Nokia E71x

I have Nokia E71x and I can't connect to home WLAN, on screen it says that routher is found but when I wan't to go to Internet trough WLAN (Start web browsing ) it says WLAN: Unable to connect, Invailed WPA pre-shared key. Need help.

Check the router if you have set a password or any changes that you have made on it. This is because if your router is a secured connection (asking for a code or password), you have to make sure that you have entered the correct password.

E51 Wlan Hidden SSID

We have lately purchase a couple of N95 and a couple E51 handsets. At the office we have a Linksys 4400N Access Point configured for 802.11G with WPA and hidden SSID.
The N95 handsets are able to connect with no problems whatsoever. The E51 however simply won't connect.
I tried taking the E51 home and connect it to my Airport Extreme 802.11G/N with the same results. At home I also have a hidden ssid so I tried to unhide it, with the ssid visible the E51 connects immediately. Hiding the ssid again (and changing the setting to hidden on the e51) and the handset is again unable to connect!
How is it that the N95 is able to connect and the E51 fails so miserably? I'd really prefer NOT to have to change the WiFi settings just because of a couple of handsets. Or simply say that for E51 users it just won't work.
This issue is really bugging me, searching the net has only resulted in few hits on this specific issue. Here's hoping that it is I who's making some kind of mistake (I doubt that however since I configured the N95 and the E51 side by side).

I was able to connect nokia e51 to WLAN with hidden SSID (I use WPA-PSK with AES).
Just define the access point first and choose "Network status" as hidden.
Here is short instruction from the manual:
"Connection > Access points.
2. Select Options > New access point to create a
new access point, or select an existing access point
from the list and then Options > Duplicate access
point to use the access point as a basis for the new
one.
3. Define the following settings.
• Connection name — Enter a descriptive name
for the connection.
• Data bearer — Select Wireless LAN.
• WLAN network name — To enter the service
set identifier (SSID), that is, the name that
identifies the specific WLAN, select Enter
manually. To select the network from the
WLANs in range, select Search for networks.
• Network status — Select Hidden if the network
you are connecting to is hidden or Public if it is
not hidden.
• WLAN network mode — If you select
Infrastructure, devices can communicate with
each other and with wired LAN devices through
a WLAN access point. If you select Ad-hoc,
devices can send and receive data directly with
each other, and no WLAN access point is needed.
WLAN security mode — You must select the
same security mode that is used in the WLAN
access point. If you select WEP (wired equivalent
privacy), 802.1x, or WPA/WPA2 (Wi-Fi protected
access), you must also configure the relevant
additional settings. See the device help for more

After Ana WLAN not auto connecting

After I upgraded to Anna (N8/Slovenia) a lot of Nokia applications can not connect to the Internet automatically anymore.
My setup for "Data use in home country" is Always ask (or WLAN only) as I don't have any data plans with my provider. Also I set WLAN scanning to OFF. Then I try to access internet with Nokia browser and I get "Unable to connect" error. The same goes for Ovi Store, Here and Now, Ovi Daily App and some other Nokia applications. The only way to get it working is if I manually connect to the WLAN before using those applications.
At the same time other applications work as expected, for example I can browse internet with Opera Mini, connect with Skype, Fring, Sports Tracker, Exchanger and others. They ask me to connect to the WLAN or when starting up.
Before the upgrade all this worked.

Mine is the same...... No auto connect to wlan, I have to connect manual first.
Also I cannot connect via any of my data plan settings !!! Im not a happy man
Is there a fix for this ?? Please help
